Perhaps the actual modulator is toast, they do fail, to check em you

And change the bloody fluid and filters, even I am not that slack.

On a warm, barely able to do without A/C trip in March I got 31mpg for 120

Coupla weeks ago, somebody questioned my use of RUBBING compound and implied
that it must've been POLISHING compound that I used on my two-month-old ''80

afternoon, I found in my outbuilding two cans of RUBBING compound, one of which
I used on the new '240D in '79. Meanwhile, also this afternoon, I purchased a
can of POLISHING compound, which probably has a little finer grit that the

It could be, but the disk is a good starting point.

For example, on my Mac Book Pro with an eSATA ExpressCard, I can NOT
complete any lengthy disk tests without the tests stopping because of
failure. It is something as easy as plugging in a USB device like my
phone. Must be some interrupt issue.

However, using a FireWire interface, it works perfectly (though slower).

I would guess (and that's all it is) that the first fill of oil should be

That's curious, did they give any reason? I wonder if M1 ATF will extend
transmission life, or just cost more money.

M1 ATF did wonders for my '87 wagon, I suspect because it was cleaning up
deposits in the valve body. Perhaps that is the best use for it, then
switch back to "regular" ATF once the benefit has been realized.

What other brands of ATF are recommended? I think Jaime recommended the
Febi flavor that met MB specifications.

A. Theft of an alligator is the misappropriation or taking of an
alligator, an alligator's skin, or a part of an alligator, whether dead or
alive, belonging to another, either without the consent of the other to the
misappropriation or taking, or by means of fraudulent conduct, practices,
or representations. An intent to deprive the other permanently of the
alligator, the alligator's skin, or a part of an alligator is essential.
B.(1) Whoever commits the crime of theft of an alligator when the
misappropration or taking amounts to a value of five hundred dollars or
more shall be imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than ten
years, or may be fined not more than three thousand dollars, or both.
(2) When the misappropriation or taking amounts to a value of one hundred
dollars or more, but less than a value of five hundred dollars, the
offender shall be imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than
two years, or may be fined not more than two thousand dollars, or both.
(3) When the misappropriation or taking amounts to less than a value of
one hundred dollars, the offender shall be imprisoned for not more than six
months, or may be fined not more than five hundred dollars, or both. If the
offender in such cases has been convicted of theft of an alligator two or
more times previously, upon any subsequent conviction he shall be
imprisoned, with or without hard labor, for not more than two years, or may
be fined not more than one thousand dollars, or both.

I ran both the Short offline self-test and the Extended offline self-test
(smartctl -t /dev/sda) and the disk passed. (I actually
run the short test every night on cron and have seen no failures.

I did download boot ISOs for the disk test routines from Seagate and
Western Digital. I'll burn and run those later.

Could it be something other than the hard disk?

Highly regulated and permitted in Florida. Take a gator without a permit or
being licensed to do so will qualify you for some pretty substantial fines
and/or jail time.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Computer Hard Disks

2012-05-19 Thread Dan Penoff
The answer to both is yes. They are perfectly compatible in both directions.

As for drives, you have two choices:

Consumer

Enterprise

You will pay probably 3x-4x more for the equivalent enterprise drive, depending
on the vendor, but it will have a far better MTBF.

It has been my experience of the last couple of years, part of which was
working directly in an operation where both laptop and desktop computers were
being repaired on a daily basis, that hard drives are pretty much a commodity.
In other words, it's so competitive that suppliers sell based on price, and
willingly eat the warranty units that occur. If you're interested in
reliability, spend the money up front and buy an enterprise grade drive.

There is a really good study done by Google (I think) on hard drive MTBFs and
how they are really misleading. You might want to Google it and read.

If you have a drive that is acting weird, I would run a test on it. If it
fails, get it replaced while its still under warranty. Western Digital has
free software that will read every part of the disk. It can take 5-7 hours
for a 2TB drive if its connected with SATA/eSATA.

I'd have to research the SATA compatibility issue.

The manufacturers are using it, but I wouldn't pay more for a drive unless
I was considering using in a multi disk RAID configuration or considering
selling them down the road. 3GB = 300MB/s. Individual drives cannot pump
that much data, and 2 drives in a striped config can't really do that
either.

That's curious, did they give any reason? I wonder if M1 ATF will extend
transmission life, or just cost more money.

M1 ATF did wonders for my '87 wagon, I suspect because it was cleaning up
deposits in the valve body. Perhaps that is the best use for it, then switch
back to "regular" ATF once the benefit has been realized.

What other brands of ATF are recommended? I think Jaime recommended the Febi

I do have one drive that I put to sleep when I'm not using it, but that
one is used only for backing-up. These situations have occurred when I

I have noted the same problem, and not just with HDs but with MoBos and

For WD that would be their black series. They seem to have better QC than

QC on their products.

In looking at disk reviews on Newegg, however, I see a lot of brands of

The last computer I built, I built with parts from Newegg. After multiple
times of building computers without problem or incident, I never had so
many problems building a computer. I ended up replacing both the memory
and motherboard and I'm still not 100% confident of the computer.

Maybe I should find a vendor other than Newegg.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Computer Hard Disks

2012-05-19 Thread Brian Toscano
For desktop/home use... I find it better to purchase drives with 5 year
warranties than ones with 1-3 year warranties. I have had multiple Western
Digital "desktop" drives with 3 year warranties fail over the years
sometimes, sometimes right after the warranty ended, and sometimes early in
their life. Western Digital has/had a warranty warranty replacement where
they just send you another drive and a label to send the old one back,
though they do ask for a credit card in case you don't send the failed
drive back.

In the server world, when they go in hardware RAID arrays, I've seen
everyone's drives fail. That's why you use hot spares and have a service
contract.

I think they all make fine drives, but I have only purchased hard drives in
retail packages so I know they were shipped properly. Sometimes those
NewEgg drives that come from OEM boxes of 20 are thrown in a box with a
single sheet of bubble wrap and handed over to UPS to throw around some
more before they arrive at your doorstep.

Re: [MBZ] 124 harsh shift

Hey Wilton,
When I put a rebuilt AT in my w124 last year (bought from Rusty, rebuilt
by SunValley) I was planning to get the installation shop to put Mobil 1
ATF in but asked Sun Valley and they quickly replied that I should use
Dexron II.So that it is. Also, Sun valley requires a 24k mile ATF
change interval to maintain the warranty.

BTW, 8 years is a little long for the ATF... :-)

In looking at disk reviews on Newegg, however, I see a lot of brands of
