Fwiw, some of the W210's have a coolant line that runs across the car behind
the front bumper cover; it runs from somewhere around the duovalve to the frame
rail near the washer fluid reservoir.

I've had a case (related to a minor impact) where this popped out of the
retainer and rubbed through, resulting in a hard to find leak...

Good luck!

Hey you ought to check in the Charleston area, and even upstate, a lot
of manufacturing is going on here, Boeing, BMW, Michelin, and a load of
smaller companies. They seem to be hiring, and looking for good people
-- problem is that a lot of folks can't move if they have to sell their
house, and it is putting a crimp in hiring. Or so I read in the paper.
If you are in a position to move freely, that might be good for you.
And it ain't a half-bad place to live.

[MBZ] '95 E320 Leaking Coolant

2012-06-15 Thread Craig
Well, I got the car up on the ramps (which was more difficult because I
didn't want to start up the engine) and took off the belly pan (which is
a plastic-type material).

I had Shirley start the engine and once it warmed up and started leaking,
found roughly where the leak is coming from. It's on the driver's side of
the block toward the front and toward the top. I think it's coming from
the water pump. The thing has a belt driven pulley and a lot of hoses
going to it and has the thermostat on top. Being used to water pumps
behind the fan pulley, it seems a little odd, but apparently they put it
on the side of the block to shorten the engine.

I looked around while I was under the car and then on top and have some
questions:

1. How does one loosen the serpentine belt? The E420 has a spring-loaded
idler that provides the tension, but I saw nothing like that. The belt
   needs to be replaced.

2. Where are the spark plugs and distributor? (Dumb question, I know, but
I saw no trace of them.)

3. It appears that to get the radiator out I need to take off the fan and
the radiator shroud and maybe other things. Is that correct?

4. Anyone been there, done that?

Thanks,

Craig

Coil pack, or what some domestic manufacturers call "COP" or "coil on plug" are
nothing more than individual ignition coils that are typically mounted directly
on top of the spark plug.

To get to a spark plug you merely disconnect the wiring harness connector to
the coil pack and twist/pull to remove the coil pack from the spark plug.

Not always. The M104 has three coil packs, each firing two plugs
simultaneously. The V-6s have six coil packs. Between 2 V-6s (one with 2 plugs
per
cylinder) and one M104, there have been no ignition problems.

A common arrangement on sixes--the V-6 in my '93 Isuzu Trooper is the same
way. During any given crankshaft revolution one plug is firing at the
start of the power stroke and one at the start of the exhaust stroke. I
don't really understand the point of the latter unless it helps emissions
by igniting some leftover hydrocarbons that would otherwise hit the cat

No need to confuse the boy, just giving him an idea of what they are so he can

Somebody sez:

A common arrangement on sixes--the V-6 in my '93 Isuzu Trooper is the same
way. During any given crankshaft revolution one plug is firing at the
start of the power stroke and one at the start of the exhaust stroke. I
don't really understand the point of the latter unless it helps emissions
by igniting some leftover hydrocarbons that would otherwise hit the cat
unburnt.

BMW Motorrad started that (spark on power and intake) in 1970 with
the /5 series. In the case of 2 cyl motorrad, two coils firing
simultaneously each time there is a power stroke, so no distributor
is needed. In the '70s technology, there was one set of points that
opened once per crankshaft revolution.

Nope. It's cheaper than putting in 6 coils. The spark not in a
compression stroke is wasted.

Well, you could do the high density/expensive real estate solution.
Buy a lift. Put one on the lift, and park the other under it. You
get to park 2 cars in the same space that one car takes.

Or if you want a collection, you can get parking systems that store
up to maybe 16 in the floor space of 2 cars.

Craig may be running into the 50 year old rule which many employers have
been following since studies were done showing declines in several
parameters after that age. The medical field, which is growing at a very
high rate, doesn't seem to be concerned about ones age if a person can do
the job.
Besides that there are far more hospitals than manufacturing plants and many
are installing MRI, Catscan, and PETscan machines which seem to require
medical physicists for their operation.

Thank you, Gerry, for your observations. Yes, I have seen openings for
medical physicists, and, yes, there are far more hospitals than
manufacturing plants.

I looked at the search results for "medical physics courses for
graduates" and found that it would take about two years of courses to get
that degree. It's not clear how already having a Ph.D. in physics would
affect that timetable.

At age 62, however, I'm not really inclined to go back to school a third
time.

In the M104, I think it's just cheaper since no harm is done by firing the
other plug. The M112 twin plug 3-valve V-6 (early W203) does not have
variable valve timing (not with one camshaft per bank) so the lower plug must
have
some emission role.

The M272 4-cam V-6 in my C300 with variable intake and exhaust timing has
six coil packs for the six plugs.

The one problem is that if either plug/wire set has issues, both have

In the M104, I think it's just cheaper since no harm is done by firing the
other plug. The M112 twin plug 3-valve V-6 (early W203) does not have
variable valve timing (not with one camshaft per bank) so the lower plug must
have
some emission role.

The M272 4-cam V-6 in my C300 with variable intake and exhaust timing has
six coil packs for the six plugs.
