After more thought, If we are talking just the diameter of the hole, the comment above is correct. If we talk about the length of the threaded hole and the length of the bolt, however, the conclusion is the opposite. Specific threads on the bolt will be farther apart when it is heated, but the mating threads in the hole will be about twice that amount farther apart. Over enough length, this will cause the threads in the hole to jam against the threads on the bolt, eventhough the bolt-to-hole diameter clearance has increased. Re: [MBZ] Anybody there?
I do recall the details, Jaime, and just so its understood, Gary inserted himself in the middle of the situation between Rusty and I and created a great deal of dissent between the both of us without adding anything of constructive value. After things were resolved, he continued to publicly berate me for whatever twisted reasons he had, if for nothing other than to stir up trouble. There was absolutely nothing constructive about the way he conducted himself, not to mention his attempts to suggest that he was on my side throughout the whole situation. In my opinion, Gary is an intelligent, often entertaining guy who has some bizarre personality traits where he gets some sort of twisted enjoyment out of berating and belittling other people. When you call him on this, he gets defensive and ugly. I suspect it's an issue of self worth, inadequacy, maybe even self loathing that he projects to those around him, who knows? I can't comment on the Rusty/Gary situation, because I don't know all the details, nor do I care to. It is none of my business. I can say without question that in my opinion and based on my direct experiences with him, Gary is not a nice person and I would never do business with him. Period. Re: [MBZ] Anybody there?
Kaleb, I agree... enough... yet its tolerated to bash gary over and over on this list. What are you going to do about this? Its not acceptable. Like I said, I've always found gary to be a reasonable and fair business man. I suspect that most of those who have delt with him will feel the same. He doesn't deserve his livelihood being destroyed over and over again. What happened between Rusty and Gary isn't my business or anyone else's on this list. I don't have both sides of the story, I don't know what happened, so I'm staying out of it. Yet we tolerate people bashing Gary over and over again based on one side of a story. Kaleb... should we have rules against discussing Gary and Rusty? How can we handle this? Jaime On Thu, Jun 21, 2012 at 4:24 PM, Kaleb C. Ahem, I liked him a lot too. This is why when he came to me I chose to help him improve his lifestyle tremendously. I won't go into great detail but let's just say he made quite a financial improvement not to mention a monumental leap in personal hygiene, something he had never heard of before he met me. We're also talking about the larger piece of metal that the hole is in. When it expands, the hole actually becomes smaller (?). The further stripping of the hex socket in the bolt head is why I hollow grind the larger Allen bit before hammering it into place. It cuts a star shaped socket that matches the bit. I have not had this method fail, but I can't remember for sure that I have tried it on a steel bolt stuck in an aluminum casting. I did have to use it to remove the A/C compressor bracket from an iron M117 block. A hole in something that expands when heated will get larger when that something is heated. The best way to separate the threads should be heating the head and chilling the bolt. Re: [MBZ] 1976 300D
I saw two different A/C units installed in the early W115 cars - different under dash units. Both had the same York compressor units. I beleive they were dealer installed units. The unit in my '70 220D was considerably different from the unit in the '76 300D. Neither worked by the time I got the cars either. When the circumference gets larger, the diameter gets larger. The further stripping of the hex socket in the bolt head is why I hollow grind the larger Allen bit before hammering it into place. This evening, I tried heating the bolt with an oxy-acetylene torch and then chilling it with ice water, but that didn't seem to help. Tomorrow, I will look into removing the bearing bracket of the viscous fan clutch (Section 20-3140). That's the part into which the offending bolt is threaded.
