Yes, they seem to be missing at least one clamp, but it looks as if lines four
and five are clamped together at each end.

Somebody should snag it. 31 mpg on the highway at 70, and I like mine
better for trips than the Benz. About the same performance as a W124
300D 2.5L but runs smoother.

Smokier than a Benz, unbelievably so when the cold start device sticks
and gives you way too much advance and fuel at low speeds, and when
the EGR sticks open the black cloud makes it look like a coal fired
battleship in full career. Noisy at idle too, but quiet on the road.

Very nice, solid cars, never rust, and that VW engine runs forever IF
you remember to keep your foot out of it until it's warm. Otherwise,
with the extra injection advance from the cold start device you wear
out the cylinders way fast.

I still have mine, need to get it running again (fuel problems).

Great cars.

Upstate NY usually gets freezing rain then anywhere from inches to feet of
snow on top of it. I have driven in all seasons on and off road in both NC

Make it bigger with a few less rocks and then cover it all up with a foot
or two of snow."

someone from the NYC/New Jersey area. They would also terrify me in the snow!
Upstate New York, yes, fair comparison, but not The City. My wife is from The
City, I can barely ride with her in dry and sunny weather. During our last
winter visit to Wisconsin, we started a day trip to Copper Falls during a minor
snow fall, after about thirty minutes my wife was so freaked out about driving
in the country on slightly snowy roads that we turned back. Now she laughs

spooked her.

I do agree with your point about ice under the snow, that is a wicked combo,

Re: [MBZ] my 240D mostly rust repair blog

2012-11-02 Thread Dimitri Seretakis
Thanks!  I taught myself.  Basically bought a welder 17 yrs ago to repair some
rust. Struggled for a while but figured it out with some practice.  The welding
is the easy part, although butt welding sheetmetal takes some practice so as
not to burn through. Patch panel fabrication is where the real skill is
needed.  I learned from books early on and just practiced.
I use a MIG welder with shielding gas (Lincoln Weldpack 100).  It's a small
110V machine.  I don't need the power of 220 as I'm primarily welding
sheetmetal.

I didn't replace the door for a few reasons:

1. I like to keep as much original sheetmetal and paint on my cars as
possible.  This is totally silly, impractical, and irrational but I can't help
myself.  I'm not dealing with a rare Bugatti Atlantic coupe here but again it's
my impractical side that controls my actions here.
2. The patch cost $5 and the door $50.

3. The door had power windows, whereas mine doesn't which meant swapping out
all that stuff- probably less work than splicing in a patch though!
4.  I'm always up for a metalworking challenge!

Actually your first post worked fine too.

In any event, I had a look at your blog.
You do very nice work.
Did you teach yourself to weld or did you take some lessons?
What sort of welder are you using?

Why did you elect to repair the door rather than just acquire the one at the
junk yard and swap it onto the car.

Both my parents learned to drive in Pennsylvania, but my mother is
downright chaotic in snow and my father has logged several ice accidents
(admittedly out of an awful lot of driving, he commuted to Michigan from
Georgia for many years). I can drive up north with no problem, but the
slip and slide here makes me want to stay home. Fortunately I work in an
industry where that's possible.

Or not. Sheesh, a few years ago we had a snow storm where the kids got
stuck in the schools overnight because all the roads got closed for wrecks,
and all I can find on YouTube are Hendrick ads. Sad.

In the Cary, NC the people who get stuck in the winter weather are the
overconfident northerners. Three issues:
1) We have some serious hills. This especially bothers New York
City/Jersey expats for some reason.
2) When it snows, the ground is almost always above freezing, and we
usually have rain before snow. The base becomes ice as the temperature
drops if the water isn't moving; in newer cities with marginal drainage
this means thick ice in random places. When it starts cold and there is
snow it is "normal" (versus Pennsylvania at least) and relatively easy to
navigate, but that is very rare here in the center of the state.
3) A southern snow plow comes individually wrapped (I think you northerners
call it a "shovel", but for some reason I never saw the point). Salt is
something that we use on our food, and anyway our trucks are built to not
drop stuff everywhere. Thus, real southerners utilize technology to do
their work from home, while their Boston-hailing bosses wait for the tow
truck in the cold. (BTDT...)

In the last real snow storm there were many stories of folks getting half
way up a hill and then sliding back into a pile of cars and SUVs. No doubt
there are some good YouTubes of it. Cary being Cary remember that half the
people are from north of the Mason-Dixon and the other half are from India.

Moral of the story, "physics don' care who you is."

I found about a meter of proper return line packed away in another box I
had labeled "W123". It was almost like Christmas.

Re: [MBZ] Hurricane update from Northern NJ

2012-11-02 Thread Dan Penoff
Here they use concrete block construction for nearly all residential
construction. There is rebar that is tied to the footers, which is then tied to
rebar laid in a gutter across the top of the walls, which is then grouted after
the roof straps are tied to the rebar in the gutters.

This makes everything tie together from the footers to the roof joists. You
might lose roof decking, but nothing else will go unless the walls come down.

At that point all bets are off.

My house has minimal exposure, thankfully, as there are a few windows and the
big ones and the sliders in back are all recessed under large roof overhangs.
The biggest risk is from airborne debris, so that helps to keep it away.

Now if I could just do something about the 80 foot oak tree behind the house...

It was a spec house, not a custom builder. Not a lot you can do in that
situation.

We made them crazy, so much so that they banned us from the job site near the
end. Every day we walked through the house and wrote up any deficiencies. They
had these little carbon less forms for this stuff, and we did it so much they
finally just gave us a box if them.

Sadly, most of what we wrote up was nothing more than compliance issues. I
could write a book on the shoddy construction practices of this builder. The
sad part was that they were one of the better ones in town.

This was at the beginning of the housing boom down here, and places were being
flung up so fast and so poorly it was scary. We did nothing more than hold them
to their own specs, which most of their subs didn't know.

What's even scarier were the people who bought inventory homes or never visited
the job site when their home was being built. Those places are starting to
really show their age and the poor construction, and they're not even 20 years
old.

There are different kinds of windows. I put in Anderson windows in my
addition that are sorta intermediate storm types -- they have tabs on
the frames to hold the sashes in but are not impact resistant for
hurricanes, etc. Those windows are really expensive but the higher end
houses over on the barrier islands tend to use them and obviate the need
for storm shutters (perhaps).

Interestingly, the fire dept says that unless there is life in danger
they will pretty much watch a "hurricane" house burn, and keep those
nearby hosed down, as with the hurricane windows, metal roofs, and
Hardie siding they cannot break into walls or roofs or windows to put
water on a fire. Saw some article somewhere a day or two ago of someone
saying they were astounded that the houses on the shore up in NJ did not
have shutters on the windows, that might be the reason.

As far as strapping -- in Houston (and maybe the rest of TX along the
coast) the strapping had to run from the sill up over to the roof for
single story houses, not sure about 2 story but there are strap
requirements there too. Here along the coast in SC the straps just need
to tie the walls to the sill, run up a bit on the wall studs.

You can use flaps vacuum hose for a few days until the order from Q
gets in. Changing the return lines is a biennial (or annual) routine
maintenance item. #2D or BioD doesn't make much difference in my
experience. However, the BioD i used has the methanol recovered.
Just because bioD comes from a big plant does NOT mean that the
methanol was recovered properly.

The vacuum hose won't last long, but it will hold until the real
stuff gets there.
