Re: [MBZ] drive safe this winter with a camera on the dash

2012-11-03 Thread clay monroe
The new cars come with tracking devices in the computer system. Insurance
fellow comes out to see your car and plugs his laptop in. Downloads all sorts
of data they then use to argue you are at fault so as not to pay up. The
camera is a nice addition to refute or at least have something to post on the
youtubes

I've had good experience with Trane. One relay replaced. After 15 years,
heat pump model is still cooling well. Dealer said Trane uses "off the
shelf" parts, so Tranes are cheaper to repair.

In RE: Carrier and Goodman:
Goodman is good, cheap stuff.
Maybe thinner cabinet metal and louder operation, but performs as well and
lasts as long as more expensive brands, assuming they are both installed
correctly.
The main problem with Goodman is they'll let their distributors sell their
stuff to anybody, even me, so you're more likely to see a botched job with
Goodman equipment in it.

Carrier is not the "gold standard" IMO.
Trane is.

If you speed or violate road laws, may not be so "handy" .

The guys on HVAC-Talk bemoan the fact that there are no really good thermostatic

left, and neither one is putting out really good valves. One of them had a run

Re: [MBZ] Todays job

2012-11-03 Thread WILTON
A diversity of feelings - upset with self for "ruining" a good controller;
elation at finding that it's still good, anyway, and not having to order
over-priced replacement; regret for not checking it thoroughly earlier;
disappointment in not knowing why it wouldn't work after the pop, etc.

I have on my dirtys now, fixin to go sand some sheetrock compound so I can
get a head unit put in after that is done. funfunfun

On a related note, I have this (pricey) fan control I thought I had fried
back in the summer when I tested it out by plugging it into an extension
cord. Heard a pop and then it would not work. So yesterday, wanting to
get that sorted out, I was gonna order another one, but $55, ouch. So I
took this one apart, it is kinda interesting in that it has a push-buttton
power switch that sends power to the fan and the little low voltage RF
transmitter board to tell the fan what to do when you push the various
control buttons. Nothing looked toasted, I put the meter on a coupla
components, they looked OK. So I put it back together and hooked it up
again, this time to a switched extension cord outlet I made up (I don't
have power in the addition yet). SUCCESS Fan fans, speeds up/down,
reverses, lights light, dim, etc. That has been annoying me for months
so I can delete that from my stack.

As usual for me getting the air out is a bastard.

I pour the coolant into the tank, then pull the top hose halfway off
the radiator and backfill water until it starts spilling out over
my hands, then jam the hose back on. Top off with water in the
tank as required after driving. Seems to work pretty well.

Re: [MBZ] building code question

2012-11-03 Thread Rich Thomas
25A is not a rating for your basic Romex 12AWG or a 12ga extension cord,
though it could probably carry that current for awhile before it starts
getting toasty. It would have to have the higher temp rating. If you
have ever wired up a cooktop or oven, they have pretty small wires
attached to them, but they appear to have some other kind of insulation,
which is good for higher temps/higher currents, not the basic plastic
stuff on Romex.

Yes. But it's likely doesn't satisfy local code. A pair of 14
AWG wires is equivalent to a single 11 AWG wire. NEC ampacity
chart shows 12 AWG is suitable for 25 amp with 60 dec C
insulation.

As usual for me getting the air out is a bastard.

I pour the coolant into the tank, then pull the top hose halfway off
the radiator and backfill water until it starts spilling out over
my hands, then jam the hose back on. Top off with water in the
tank as required after driving. Seems to work pretty well.

Yes. But it's likely doesn't satisfy local code. A pair of 14
AWG wires is equivalent to a single 11 AWG wire. NEC ampacity
chart shows 12 AWG is suitable for 25 amp with 60 dec C
insulation.

I don't believe Goodman is related to anything except Amana.
Amana Distinctions = Goodman in beige paint.
Real Amana stuff has some improvements, like their furnaces have all stainless
heat exchangers while the Goodman/Distinctions furnaces have aluminized
primaries and stainless secondaries (all the condensation takes place in the
secondary unless the installer did something very wrong or the homeowner sets
the thermostat below 55°).

not to burn through. Patch panel fabrication is where the real skill is needed.
I learned from books early on and just practiced.
I use a MIG welder with shielding gas (Lincoln Weldpack 100). It's a small
110V machine. I don't need the power of 220 as I'm primarily welding
sheetmetal.

I didn't replace the door for a few reasons:

1. I like to keep as much original sheetmetal and paint on my cars as possible.
This is totally silly, impractical, and irrational but I can't help myself.
I'm not dealing with a rare Bugatti Atlantic coupe here but again it's my
impractical side that controls my actions here.
2. The patch cost $5 and the door $50.

3. The door had power windows, whereas mine doesn't which meant swapping out
all that stuff- probably less work than splicing in a patch though!
4. I'm always up for a metalworking challenge!

In any event, I had a look at your blog.
You do very nice work.
Did you teach yourself to weld or did you take some lessons?
What sort of welder are you using?

Why did you elect to repair the door rather than just acquire the one at the

[MBZ] Backup car back in service

2012-11-03 Thread Curt Raymond
My local Car Quest came through with a radiator for my '78 240D so yesterday I
replaced it and while I was there the oil cooler. Rusty had come through with a
great deal on that a couple weeks ago but its been so cool here it quit leaking
so I hadn't bothered).
Anyway removal is almost stupid easy, the oil cooler is a slight challenge
because it wants a big wrench in a tight space.

Replacement is also very easy. As usual for me getting the air out is a
bastard. Fortunately my '78 240D has a bolt in the thermostat housing. After
forgetting about it and running the temp high as a result this morning I pulled
the bolt and pre-filled the housing. Although it didn't get hot I wasn't
getting cabin heat which was concerning. Finally I just took it for a ride.
Before I'd gone 100 yards the cabin heat came on. Well la-de-dah...

Seems like power is back up too, I have two possible explanations, bio sitting
in the IP for a week probably helps but I think I felt a dragging parking brake
let loose when I first backed out of the driveway. I'd been wondering about
such a thing but had assumed that after 500 miles of commuting it would have
gotten better or worse. I rarely use the thing so they tend to seieze up on me.
I'll try to use it more this week and see if it helps.

Anyway, the DV seals finally got here from Germany, I'll get on to that
tomorrow. Today we're installing a floor register to get heat from the
woodstove to our bedroom. Then hopefully off to see Argo.

-Curt

Is it OK to run a 240v device on a 25 amp breaker through two parallel
14-2 NM romex instead of one 10-2 NM?

No. The purpose of the breaker is to prevent fire in the
wiring. 25A through 14ga wire will cook. 25A through
two paralleled 14ga wires will not cook. Ah, but how
does the _breaker_ know that both paralleled wires are
still intact and sharing the load equally? It doesn't.
If something happens to half your wire, such as bad
connection or trauma, what then happens to your house?
