Re: [MBZ] (SPAM?) Re: Warning lights?
It still sounds like a bad ground. Parking brake, brake wear, and low fuel indicators are independent of the alternator and are directly powered by 12 volts. Not independent. The lamp-test function uses a diode and resistor to send current into the alternator for each of the lamps that don't normally come on, so that you can see them all glow dimly before the engine starts. This is shown in the car schematics. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] CL idiot of the week
There are so darn many of the R107 that the amount of cash required to make this one a viable driver is a multiple of the value of the car. Though fewer SLC were made, the model is not desirable for a collector or normal buyer. They rot out and are not cared for because they are a lesser version. The rear seat is no more useful than the package shelf in the SL, so not able to carry passengers. Did I mention they rust out? Bad M117 is not the simple engine to work on the way a OM engine is. Being a V engine you have to double work to keep it running. Dual head shop time, so twice as much $$. Mechanicals need to be sourced from a W116, which is more valuable in good condition than the SLC. You would still need to send the engine out for work. About the only way an SLC would have value in the condition this one is, would to be the ultra rare 5.0 engine of 78-80. There is so much inventory of actual running cars available, a dead one is pretty much a parts car. The K-jet parts will be useful in the 380 as well as the 560, which are both better cars than the 1980 107. Since the car is a mess of 114/116 body parts and the newer SE engines are probably a better swap in, bothering to keep this car pure renders this a worthless parts car. clay On Dec 4, 2012, at 7:17 AM, Michael Canfield wrote: Wow. Re: [MBZ] Warning lights?
I had time tonight to go out and pull the cluster from my '84 190D that isn't charging (parking brake, brake warning and low fuel indicators on). Pulling the cluster from a 201 is a lot harder than a 123. The steering wheel must come out, normal tools don't seem to work and you can't push it out from underneath... Anyway the bulb for the alternator light is much bigger than the other warning lights, its a 3w bulb, same as the turn indicators so I swapped it with a turn indicator bulb, now the alternator light is on during POST where it wasn't before. Dug around in my box o' bulbs and found a replacement (actually found 10 replacements, I guess at one point 12 was the minimum order) and got it installed before bedtime. Re: [MBZ] Beltless
So, let me get this straight. One belt drives the alternator. That alternator provides the electricity to run the electric motors, which turn the oil pump, water pump, compressor and power steering pump. And this saves horse power, converting torque into electricity and then back into torque again? The number of belts has stayed the same, the number of electric motors has increased by four, so I don't think any weight has been saved. I can see how selectively and temporarily removing loads when maximum acceleration is called for can make more power available to turn the driving wheels, but I don't see how this increases fuel economy. It's the coming thing and whether it's going to be limited to high end cars is the question. The new Porsche direct injection 3.8 L 400 hp water cooled flat six in the 991 has only one belt which drives the alternator. The variable flow oil pumps (pressure and scavenge), variable flow water pumps and thermostats, power steering pump, and AC compressor (swash plate type) are all electric. Saves the hp to drive them thus improving fuel economy. Which trumps costs, apparently. MB's new 5.5 550hp Twin-Turbo V-8 uses the same technology and I would bet Audi has jumped on the same bandwagon. With that kind of power you can zip over to Costco in no time flat. Curt, Never owned a W123 to compare the two, but I know I didn't have to take the steering wheel off of my '85 190D when I took the cluster out. If you take out the drivers side vent duct hose once you've removed the bottom panel unscrewed the speedo cable, you can reach around push out the cluster from behind on the left side. ...Speaking of the refreshed '14 E-classit looks like 4matic will finally be available on the BlueTEC (diesel) model as well, if the preliminary ordering info that was recently shown is anything to go by!.. The undisguised production model is shown in the 11/29 Auto motor und Sport. I read previously that every body panel except one has been changed. It's much more attractive with new lights front and rear. The 3.5 265hp Bluetec will be avaliable in the ML GL next year so maybe that engine will be available in the E. No spare tire, like all Bluetecs. I saw a '13 ML at my dealer this week and it's 3.5 DI 302hp engine is now E85 compatible. Heavily equipped at $61,500. And this saves horse power, converting torque into electricity and then back into torque again? ...I don't see how this increases fuel economy. Obviously because the _average_ load is much lower than the peak supply that the mechanical-only is capable of supplying. Enough so that it more than pays for the efficiency losses due to the double conversion. Think of the oil pressure relief valves, for example. My guess is the real savings are on water pump and cooling fan. But we still have cost, space, weight, and reliability issues to deal with.
