Re: [MBZ] Now I have a bios problem

2013-01-01 Thread Jim Cathey

How do you restore a bios?

If you fragged the flash contents you are S*C*R*E*W*E*D.
The usual load procedure involves a JTAG port and a special
diagnostic utility, dongle, and image to restore the flash
to a known configuration.

A safe-flash system involves a loader that is _never_
updated, and an updatable partition, so that you can
always start over.

Costs more. Guess what doesn't happen?

Re: [MBZ] For Sale: 1995 S500 Coupe

2013-01-01 Thread TE
Well given that my only advertisement has been on craigslist Raleigh and
Charlotte, I am probably missing a bunch of 'Mercedes folks' in GA, SC and
eastern NC who don't regularly check Raleigh or Charlotte. Looking back, I
should have put an ad on ATL and Upstate SC and Charleston too, but it's a
moot point now.

I will have to wait until I get back to China, redo the ads with my father's
cell phone number and tighten up the wording to thwart off any deadbeat
dregs of society, which unfortunately are all I have heard from so far. Hey,
at least the phone number listing that requires the secret decoder ring has
eliminated any telemarketers.

I really wanted to take care of the hassle of selling it for him while I was
home, because I know he's got a lot going on and I guess it's just me trying
to be a good son and take care of shit for my father. Is the car worth the
bluebook value of $4,950? Definitely. Is the car a good deal at $3,950 with
a salvage title and a bit of faded paint? Yes. Is the car an absolute steal
at $3,000? Absolutely. Unfortunately it's only 'Mercedes folks' who
understand these things though, as most dregs of society only care about
mileage and price. These dumbasses don't realize that just the Bosch Euro
Xenon headlights alone can fetch at least $1,200 on eBay, if not more.

Anyway, to answer your question the car does have a salvage title; however,
I have never heard of an insurance company not insuring a car just because
it has a salvage title. If so, it's probably a company not worth doing
business with anyway.

I will say that it's taken every bit of my willpower not to jump on this. I
would have to cover a plane ticket and travel expenses, which adds up
quickly. I can't believe you haven't gotten any takers at $3k.

Does it have a salvage title? I ask because of the mention of a write off in
the description. That can scare people off, I know. Some insurance companies
are not terribly keen about insuring vehicles with salvage titles.

This is not universally true. I recall a crash in Dallas, Texas, where

Re: [MBZ] Plane Crash for Roger - Spoiler Alert!

2013-01-01 Thread Dan Penoff
I watched this when it aired. I was disappointed. Just as with the NASA
attempt to remote pilot a jet into a "controlled" crash years ago at Edwards
AFB, this one failed as well. Most of the program was just a lead up to the
actual crash and was pretty boring, IMHO.

Re: [MBZ] R107 wheel upgrades

2013-01-01 Thread OK Don
IIRC, which is in doubt, I was running 205/60 15's on the SLC with
aftermarket wheels (ugly). The front tires would rub on the innner fender
wells when the wheel was cranked to the stop, and might rub the fender
opening if you hit a large bump during a turn. Otherwise, they were fine.

2013-01-01 Thread OK Don
There was an MB calendar a few years back that had photos of a couple of
new MBs that were finished in all chrome. I always wondered how they did
that - must have been an early version of this process. I never thought of
trying to spray silver for a chrome like finish.

Well done in your industriousness over the past few months.

I was doing a carboy a month for a few years. Sixty gallons of beer a year is
a bit much and I ran out of people with livers willing to indulge in the
heavier beers I made. I gave my brother a half case of something and he drank
three over a month or two, then gave me the rest back and returned to drinking
canned piss. Even giving away half what I made left me with 25-30 beers a
month and I was not up to tackling that. It took me more than a decade to
whittle away all I had made. Good thing it was stronger stuff that was able to
survive being bottled that long

I will say that it's taken every bit of my willpower not to jump on this. I
would have to cover a plane ticket and travel expenses, which adds up quickly.
I can't believe you haven't gotten any takers at $3k.

Does it have a salvage title? I ask because of the mention of a write off in
the description. That can scare people off, I know. Some insurance companies
are not terribly keen about insuring vehicles with salvage titles.

For Christmas my wife got me a beer of the month club thing wherein they
send some amount of various beers (I think a 6 pack maybe, I need to

That would be a waste. Once you get to B20, there is no added benefits to
be had. IT does cause issues with eating hoses at higher than B30. Some
will continue to evangelize B99, but it is really a fuel additive, not a
long term fuel due to the damage you cause fuel lines and seals. The
solvent value remains the same at B20 as higher ratios without causing fuel
line failures.

Re: [MBZ] OK - anybody there?

2013-01-01 Thread Rich Thomas
They are sorta soft with a bit of resistance. When they are hot right
off the cooker they are amazing. The shells are pretty soft so you can
kinda tear them open with your teeth (this is a one-handed operation
because you have a cupful in your other hand) and suck out the peanuts.
You could probably eat the shells if you want some roughage, or chew
them a bit and spit out the shell. Once you get started you can't
stop. Go well with a Holy City Pluff Mud Porter or an Oyster Stout,
especially eating them outdoors with a bbq going.

Off to get a new Milk Stout but no hot boiled ("bawled," to be more
precise) peanuts. The Scotch Ale I had last night was mighty tasty
too. An Oktoberfest will be ready Thursday. I am awash in fresh beer!

[MBZ] R107 wheel upgrades

Had a blow out on right rear, classic center says to use underwhelming tires on
stock rims or upsize to a 15inch. Both 14 & 15 inch are becoming harder to
source so I looked at upsize x2, I still need good rubber for Froggy. I was
able to pick up some 8 hole 16 inch benz rims. What does the group mind think
I will have problems with?

1150 is cast on the front side.

Made in Italy

I looked at tire sizes to fit and came up with best seeming to be a 205/60/16
in H rated or V. That would have minimal impact on speedo, which is far off
anyway. Are these wheels too fat to fit under the fender? Any other issues I
am missing?

It's called a "pillow top" mattress and they have been quite popular for
some years. And yes, when you have a king bed like we do, turning the
mattress is a major undertaking.

I'm just amazed at how stinkin' expensive the things are. The one we
have now is about 14 years old and cost us around $1600, IIRC.

I just bought a custom size mattress directly from the maker (located in
either north or south Carolina, don't remember which). Their price was
great, about $300 delivered. Coil spring, plain Jane, made to fit a
European bed spring smaller than a single. If you only need a simple coil
spring, I can dig up their info.

2013-01-01 Thread Dan Penoff
Ours is a king, which ratchets up the price considerably.

SWMBO will want pretty much what we currently have, which is a Serta or Sealy
with the pillow top.

Since the markups on bedding are pretty ridiculous, I plan on going around and
trying some out, then going to a little mom and pop furniture store in Tampa
that will order anything for you and just add a couple hundred on top for their
trouble.

Re: [MBZ] OT - mattresses; was For Sale or steal: 1995 S500 Coupe

2013-01-01 Thread Peter Frederick
I would like that info too, please, I need to buy several (newest one
is at least 30 years old and shot).

I've been told by a reliable source you can get a thin (2") sheet of
memory foam at a decent prince (Walmart of a fabric store, I'll have
to check) that goes a long way towards reviving a dead mattress, too.
Mine is too far gone for that, but a plain coil spring mattress with a
thin memory foam top sounds like a great deal to me!

2013-01-01 Thread Max Dillon
I just bought a custom size mattress directly from the maker (located in either
north or south Carolina, don't remember which). Their price was great, about
$300 delivered. Coil spring, plain Jane, made to fit a European bed spring
smaller than a single. If you only need a simple coil spring, I can dig up
their info.

[MBZ] 300E Drivers Side Mirror

2013-01-01 Thread Dan Penoff
While installing the eldest's new car stereo, he reminded me that the adjuster
on his drivers side mirror is inoperative, that is, the little black rod is
broken. I looked at it when we got the car and determined that it could not be
repaired, but subsequently forgot about it since I wasn't driving the car.

Anyone (Kaleb?) got a spare laying around or seen one in a pick and pull they
could snag?

I have checked around here without success.

Thanks,

Dan

It's called a "pillow top" mattress and they have been quite popular for some
years. And yes, when you have a king bed like we do, turning the mattress is a
major undertaking.

I'm just amazed at how stinkin' expensive the things are. The one we have now
is about 14 years old and cost us around $1600, IIRC.

Now you can understand why I don't have the coin for Tarek's car

[MBZ] OT - mattresses; was For Sale or steal: 1995 S500 Coupe

2013-01-01 Thread WILTON
BTW, why do mattresses these days hafta be so thick and have that 2 to
3-inch-thick cushion on top? I bought new set 4 or 5 years ago; overall
thickness of the set made the bed so high that I nearly needed a ladder!
'Had stealer take the ridiculously thick box spring back and bring me one
only about half that thickness. 'Found a mattress without that thick
cushion on top; still some cushion on it but not nearly as thick as most I
see in stores. The overall quality is less than I wanted, too, but I don't
want that THICK cushion on top. BTW, 'can't even flip these new mattresses
for use on either side - sells more mattresses, of course.

I had no expectations that he would even consider mine.

$3000 is a steal for that car, and if I could do it without risking the
wrath of SWMBO who is wanting to purchase a new mattress (big $$$) I would
in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, the mattress comes first
