Re: [MBZ] OT GUN: RKBA

2013-01-14 Thread Greg Fiorentino
Hendrik:

I have a dearly loved Sister-in-Law who can't help reposting screeds of
fever-swamp left-wing websites. After the first few I stopped responding
with logic and facts and simply hid her objectionable posts. If someone on
the list whose comments I valued posted occasional illogical and uninformed
political posts I would probably read them all and respond. If they were
too frequent I might add the poster to my "twit list" via an outlook filter.
I strongly believe in open and fair discussion on the course our nation has
taken and should take. I do not believe that silencing one side of a
discussion has a place in a democracy.

My question is what would the outcome be if someone posted a link to a
website where you can sign up to support gun control?
Anyway whatever happens it's nothing to do with me, we got our gun control
last century. Has it worked? Well there have been no more massacre type
events (although the conspiracy theories on Port Arthur are quite puzzling,
particularly that they built a mortuary truck
http://southeastasianews.org/portarthur/the_morgue_truck.html ).
However it seems that criminal types still seem to have access to all sorts
of weaponry. Whilst I need a license to own a air rifle, not that I have an
air rifle or license.

[MBZ] Very OT: Ban the Doctors!

2013-01-14 Thread Dieselhead

facts:

Ban the doctors! Using the same logic hyped by celebrities,
politicians, and self-appointed do-gooders, doctors and other medical
professionals should be banned.

You are almost 9 times more likely to be killed by a doctor than by a
firearm. Here are the facts:

Firearm homicides
*   Number of deaths: 11,078
*   Deaths per 100,000 population: 3.6
From CDC: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/homicide.htm

2004 numbers:
Some deaths from medical causes
Deaths from Medical error: 98,000
Deaths from bedsores (hospital) 115,000

http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2004/mar2004_awsi_death_02.htm

Therefore: by the same logic, there should be mass hysteria to ban the Docs.

Then the same groups can move on to banning bathtubs, cars, baseball
bats, knives, golf clubs, vases, bricks, golf clubs, and all other
instruments of death.

oops.. aren't some people saved by doctors? Can't use that argument, huh?

Hmmm. ... Aren't some people saved by protectors with guns?...
Guess that argument does not hold up either then does it.

Oh well, when did logic matter?

Well said Mr. Mann.

http://www.usrepeals.org/ca/mtbpers/hoplophobia.html

I'll join in this thread simply because my family came to this country in
1731, fought the war of independence, and were part of the group that
ratified the Constitution. A member of my family has defended this Country
in every conflict to date, so I feel I do have skin in this game.

There is a specific condition for those who express unfounded and excessive
fear of guns in particular. *Hoplopobia* , For anyone so afflicted, it
might be worth the effort for them to look up the proper, full meaning and
explanation of the term Hoplopobia. I respectfully suggest they do so.

It is my considered opinion that the present flailing emotions displayed by
Hoplopobiac persons which entirely focuses on "guns are bad because I am
scared of what I would do with one" unfortunately fails terribly because it
fails to address the true issues behind the improper use of a self defense
weapon.

We have now heard days of broadcasting by panic consumed people who get
public exposure and NOT ONCE have the real issues which need to be
addressed been spoken about.

While the crazy madman killed people, approximately 270,000,000 citizens in
America who own guns did nothing illegal with them. They lived the entire
day without doing harm to anyone, and have continued to do so.

I'm one of those citizens and I'm deeply insulted by the Hoploplobiac who
intends to impart their own untreated condition upon me. The 2nd Amendment
is not about guns.. it is about the God Given Right to self defense by any
means. It exists because our forefathers had the experience and wisdom to
understand that God Given Right existed and that it was responsible of them
to preserve it against ALL who would infringe that Right.

For those Hoploplobics who take the time to consult Websters, please feel
free to also consult the meaning of "infringe", "treason" and "sedition".

Now, I leave you to go watch a hollywood movie that displays for over 2 hrs
the wanton murder of people by unemotional and improper use of firearms,
for entertainment purposes, of course. Later I'll try to find and watch the
same hollywood stars display their Hoploplobia, on camera, for the new
media.. yet again.

Re: [MBZ] A new Benz

2013-01-14 Thread OK Don
It looks a lot like a VW CC - whose CoD is 0.28 - same as the 1986 W124
sedan. My how the rest finally catch-up.
Yes, at highway speeds, CoD does make a difference. I've seen the fuel
consumption go from 40mpg to 50mpg on my commute home, depending on traffic
and head/tail wind. A 30 MPH wind can change your airspeed from 70mph to
either 40 or 100 - BIG difference in drag. I think it made a difference of
around 15 vs 25 mpg in the ML on a round trip to Dallas on day - but it's
been a while.
The Passat does not have a particularly low CoD, though I haven't found the
number yet. I was surprised that VW was braggin about 0.28 on the CC though.

All that having been said, I like the swoopy designs. No, they don't look
like a traditional MB, but nothing else does either. they wouldn'ty sell,
because those of us who worship the old cars, can't ot won't afford a new
one, regardless of what it loks like.

Re: [MBZ] A new Benz

2013-01-14 Thread G Mann
Some wind tunnel data I've seen, which came out of Wright Patterson so I
tend to believe it, says below 50 MPH drag force on a car is not really a
factor. Certainly, in rush hour, start stop, it is not, At sustained speed
above 50 MPH the drag factor increases with speed to the point that it
becomes worthy of the "significant" rating.

I personally believe most of the "Swoopy" built into cars currently is for
marketing more than anything else. If it looks a certain way, you must be
saving money on gas, school of engineered marketing. On par with the
marketing of the 50's and 60's when you could "Hear the power" so it must
be a fast car.

Just my .02 cents worth

Did you hit the tree face first or back first?
Gerry

From: "Mike Esh"
No they do not grow back, the pieces are still floating around in there.
Rehab was exercising the back muscles that were still attached.
Repercussions are a slightly weaker back, however the other muscles seem
to have taken over pretty well. As I said earlier I was very lucky to
have minimal injuries compared to many others who did not fare so well.

of other questionable issues. I do not think much work has been put into this.
Two guys bidding on it at auction. Old dude and young guy. Old dude was
going to win and bid it up to $3500. Was not worth that price even then.

Re: [MBZ] Skiing

2013-01-14 Thread Mike Esh
No they do not grow back, the pieces are still floating around in there. Rehab was exercising the back muscles that were still attached. Repercussions are a slightly weaker back, however the other muscles seem to have taken over pretty well. As I said earlier I was very lucky to have minimal injuries compared to many others who did not fare so well.

Anyone have any good advice in regard to range hoods?

We have a Broan unit. Maybe 5 to 10 years old.

I cannot recall the model but it is the curved one rather than the old boxy one
and it has 2 small halogen flood light type bulbs and a panel on the face with
push buttons for 3 levels of fan speed and 3 levels of light.

Unfortunately, it would appear that the electronic board has suffered a
failure. There was a flash like someone was taking a photo and now the lights
will not work.
The fan still works fine on all 3 speeds.

We had an issue once before about 2 years ago when a bulb burned out and I was
putting a new one it. It went dead but that time it was a fuse which was
readily replaced once we took off enough part to get to the board itself. I
assumed I had done something while putting in the new bulb but maybe not.

The gist of all this is that the replacement board is going to cost about $200
and the whole hood only cost something like $300.

So, I have some choices.

I can replace the whole thing but that is a bit of a pain because it is ducted
outside and I will have to get the thing out and the new one in. If so, I may
swap to a Bosch. A bit more expensive but it looks to be simpler.

I can replace the board and hope they have improved it. The new one has a
different # so I assume this may not be an isolated incident. Warranty of
course is long over.

3rd choice - and this one appeals to me as a frugal sort - is to find a way to
make the lights work without their board. Should basically be doable as the
board just facilitates the 3 light levels. I could readily hook them up full
power as I doubt we use the dimmed functions much anyway - or I could put in a
dimmer switch that would provide variable light. The bigger issue with that is
where to mount the dimmer etc. SWMBO is not impressed with my frugal idea and
is concerned that I may make some Rube Goldberg contraption I guess.

So, I solicit your thoughts on the matter.

It was rumored the revel of the '14 CLA would be part of the NAIAS, but
there was an invitation only showing last night which was the only time
it will make an appearance this week (in the US at least).

We will have to wait until late summer or fall for it to hit dealerships
here. The projected $30K starting price sounds nice, maybe some of us
will finally be able to afford a new M-B now! The 2.0 turbo 4cyl & 7spd
auto is the only combo that will be offered to start. AMG & 4matic
models to follow.
