Florida has no such designation, only antique which is limited to the sorts
of vehicles you would see in a parade.

Wisconsin used to have a good classic registration, but they restricted the
months of the year you could drive it in. In other words, times like December
through February were a no-no. It was cheap, though - something like $45 for
2-3 years if I recall.

 HAVBRO'S DOWN!
 By Wilton Strickland

One morning about mid-January, 1979, I was sitting at a briefing table in
Havbro Nielsen's office at Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland. I was Director
of Engineering, in charge of construction and maintenance of all physical
facilities on base. Havbro was the Danish civilian, civil engineering
contractor's chief engineer, my civilian counterpart. I had asked Havbro
about some aspect of one of the projects we had underway. He was standing
on the other side of the table from me using a flip chart to his left as a
briefing aid. The door into the office was behind him.

We were having our usual friendly but very business-like discussion of the
situation at hand. Suddenly, Havbro stopped in mid-sentence, turned and
rushed outside the building. I thought for a second that he had seen
something out the window behind me that needed his immediate attention. I
turned, glanced out and saw nothing unusual. To rush out without saying,
Please, excuse me, or something to that effect was not like Havbro, at
all. He was every bit a gentleman and a stickler for protocol. I was
still a bit shocked and confused by his sudden departure and even said
aloud to myself, Well, I guess he'll be back in a minute. He had been
gone for only a few seconds when a Danish workman came rushing inside the
building and past the doorway to Havbro's office yelling, Call emergency!
 Havbro's down! Call emergency!

As Havbro's secretary grabbed the phone, I rushed outside and found Havbro
lying on the frozen ground immediately outside the doorway. My immediate
thought was that he was dead. His eyes had the classic blank stare of
death, and I saw no evidence of his breathing. I felt quickly for a pulse
at his wrist then at the side of his neck beneath his ear; I felt none, but
I also thought, I may not be feeling just the right place, especially in
my excitement. I felt certain, though, that he was dead.

I had never had any CPR training. I had seen actors on TV perform CPR in
such shows as Emergency, Squad 51, etc.; I had even seen a couple of
Los Angeles EMT's (emergency medical technicians) on the real Squad 53
performing CPR on an actual victim as I crept past an accident scene in Los
Angeles several months before, but I had never had any training in it and
had never attempted such. My thought was, Havbro is dead; I must do
something; if I can keep some air/oxygen and blood moving through his
system 'til the doctor gets here, it may help. I started pumping slowly
and rhythmically on his chest the way I had seen them do on TV and on the
street in LA as I passed slowly in the car.

Meanwhile, the Danish workman had come back out of the building and was
kneeling beside Havbro, holding his hand and calling, Havbro! Havbro!
He also knew that Havbro was dead. I never said a word - I just thought I
would keep pumping as long as it takes - 'til a doctor or EMT could get
there. As I heard the siren of the ambulance a couple of blocks away,
Havbro's eyes suddenly fluttered; he gasped a couple of times and started
trying to get up! The workman and I tried to restrain him and tell him not
to get up - to just lie there, but as the ambulance pulled up, Havbro got
up and walked over to it! He got in the ambulance, and they drove away as
the workman and I just stood there in shocked disbelief.

A few minutes later, the workman and I went to the hospital and told the
nurses and the doctor what had happened. At first, they doubted what we
were telling them, but they soon realized that if it had not been for the
pumping on his chest, Havbro would likely have been permanently dead.

They flew him to Copenhagen the next day for extensive testing and
treatment. I left about three weeks later and have not seen Havbro again.
 He recovered and returned to

I've been around OTBH (over the horizon backscatter) radar that disturbs all
sorts of electronic devices. There wouldn't be anything like that at W-R,
though.

Kills birds, too, if they are unlucky enough to fly in front of the beam.
Didn't happen much, however, as the sites always seemed to be devoid of any
animal life. I suspect there was something about the radar that they could
detect that was unpleasant.

I saw a radar system on a Navy ship kill a seabird once. A sailor went out on
deck and picked up the carcass. He said it was warm, like it just came out of
the microwave. Go figure.

On a related note, when I was a kid in the 60s and we would travel to Florida
for vacation, we always stopped in Perry because they had the only Catholic
church around.

Re: [MBZ] Wilton, remember the Korean Conflict?

2013-04-06 Thread Scott Ritchey

Our modern wars (e.g. SEA, SWA, etc.) remind me of the Star Trek episode
(A Taste of Armageddon) where two warring planets had sanitized war to the
point it continued indefinitely. Real people still died when they were
assessed as killed (and dutifully reported to disintegration chambers) but
there was no destruction of property, starvation, disease, or mass
disruption of society. In the episode, Kirk destroyed the war game
computers to force them into a real war (with all the associated horrors) so
they'd have a reason to stop it.

There is something fundamentally wrong when the cost of war is paid by less
than one half of a percent of the population.

[MBZ] OT car shopping experience

2013-04-06 Thread Rich Thomas
I went out today to look at some inexpensive transportation appliances
for the boy. Went to the Ford dealer to look at Foci and Fiestas. The
Fiestas looked way too small so concentrated on the Foci. The local
dealer had a few, one hatchback I liked, low-end basic with only auto
transmission. Sticker like $21k, the guy said he could do something
there with rebates and whatnot, I told him I would get back to him.
Looked at some used cars, not a lot lower in price for something
low-miles. Used market seems quite high.

So I get home and remember Costco had some kind of car-buying program I
had read about in their magazine. So I get on and take a look at that,
no Ford dealer in their net in my area. Rang them up, WTH? Guy said I
could look elsewhere by changing my zip code, so I put in the boy's DC
zip, a dealer in Columbia MD pops up, they have a bunch in stock with
internet no-haggle prices like $5k lower than list, so right around
$16k. That looks better.

A little while ago a guy from the dealer calls me (I guess he got my
info off the Costco site, h), asks what I am interested in, told him
a car for the boy who is in school, he says he can knock another $500
off those prices, then he said something about another $500 but I did
not catch that. Anyway he is sending me detailed cost info with
financing options, sent me the details on 3 cars (which I could also see
on their web site). No pressure, no rush, very helpful, just wanting to
move a commodity as easy as he and I can. About 10min of work for the
sales guy and me and we could close the deal, he said he would Fedex the
paperwork, get it all set up, could pick up the car anytime.

I am impressed with this internet thing, will probably decide next
coupla weeks what to do. I have to call the local guy and give him a
chance, but I don't think they are used to moving iron like soda pop.

Re: [MBZ] W140 is now a historic classic

2013-04-06 Thread Hendrik and fay
The so and so bastards here have now made a cut off date of 1980 (I
think) for cars to eligible for historic rego plus you need to be in an
approved auto mobile club to get cheap rego and there is limit to how
much the vehicle can be driven.

Wisconsin used to have a good classic registration, but they restricted the

through February were a no-no. It was cheap, though - something like $45 for
2-3 years if I recall.

[MBZ] MIG welding, some basic questions.

2013-04-06 Thread Allan Streib
Had to do some repairs on the kid's trampoline today. Simple welding of
some repair plate over a broken weld where one of the legs joins the
frame.

Using my HF welder, which has only 4 current settings but variable wire
speed control, I had some problems. Seemed to have trouble finding a
current and wire speed that would penetrate without blowing through. I
finally managed by doing a series of tack welds and then filling in, but
it didn't look very good when I was finished.

The wire I'm using is the flux core that came with the welder, which is
probably the cheapest Chinese wire they could find, so that may be part
of the problem.

Any advice for next time?

You should open a car dealership here, you'd make a killing undercutting all
the good ol'boy locals. I've had same experience with local dealerships, only
looking at used cars. They refuse to negotiate when you try explaining lower

Also, checkout the Edmunds car forums to see what other are paying
around the country.

http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef28e18!make=Fordmodel=Focused_makeindex=.ef28e18

As well as, truecar.com. Once you've decided on the model/color/
options (do some research in this regard, before you settle on
something), email a few dealers internet departments see what they
offer. When you get an offer you like, you can always see if another
dealer will match or beat it.

Spending hours in a dealer to buy a new car, really is a thing of the past.

that covers 126 and 124. I'm not sure if 86 or 87 201s had them or
not.That is 27 years, not 20.

Airbags
Every car has airbags today. Every Mercedes has had them standard for
the past twenty years!
Ken is RIGHT, that a MB is the safest car. 210 may be the safest
car, but even a 110 is very advanced for its time.

BT Ken is wrong. My 86 had ABS, and my 87s have ABS too, as
does daughter's 85 gasser. that covers 107, 126 and 124. I'm not
sure if 86 or 85 201s had them or not. That is 27 or 28 years,
not 20. MB and Bosch developed ABS, and then gave away the
technology to all comers in the interest of highway safety.

Antilock Brakes (ABS)
Also standard on Mercedes for the past twenty years, some cars today
still don't have them.

Over 25 is old enough to be registered as an antique or classic car
in quite a few states. That includes cars with airbags and ABS.

That has been my experience as a beginner with a HF wire feed unit as well.

Also, the wire goes stale after a while, and even good-quality wire that
has been sitting in the garden shed for a year or so is only going to
frustrate you. (Hurts to throw it away, though--the good stuff ain't

Re: [MBZ] MIG welding, some basic questions.

2013-04-06 Thread G Mann
Been welding for about 40+ years, all types, all positions, so I have a
little experience to draw from. [certified aerospace systems welder for a
time]

You said all the magic words for trouble getting a good weld. Flux core
wire, few amperage selections, few wire speed selections, thin material.

All of those factors work together to work against you. Likely add to that,
the weld area was not cleaned to bright metal, so you had some oxidation to
overcome which further challenged the flux core wire.

You may have been more successful with the next size heavier wire, which
would have let you add more metal to the weld puddle. Or, you may have been
able to overcome that limitation by using a weaving motion which widens
the weld puddle and doesn't let the concentration of heat build to the
point of yield of the base material, rather than rely on the feed of wire
to stack metal in a small location [which allows a concentration of heat
buildup in a localized area, thus burn though],

Welding rule of thumb.. thinner the material, more precise heat and fill
rod control, more expensive the welder.

Bring it a little closer to the computer so I can see what it's doing :)).
