I had looked at an extractor that was much less expensive and was marketed more towards the lawn mower crowd that was being sold at Lowe's, but they stopped carrying the larger capacity model, which would have been necessary for our cars. You do NOT want to change the oil by pulling the plug on my GL, its a pain in the rear, several panels to remove, then the whole oil pan is covered in a insulating pad of some sort, and it looked like draining oil there would cause the pad to get oil soaked. [MBZ] 2004 MB E 320 4matic visit to Dealership Service Clinic......found bad Front Axles / Springs...........$5, 308.80 to fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Guys, I Took my 2004 E320 4matic (77K) to a local dealership that was having a Service Clinic for MBCA members in Westchester, New York. They found two issues: - Left Rear Spring was cracked the mechanic said he could see the car was leaning left and the crack was in the lower section which was not visible to me on the lift. - Front outer axle boots were leaking and the axles needed replacing. The estimate for the repairs were $4508.80 to replace the front axles and $800 for the rear springs! The axle boots appeared to have grease around the area but I saw no obvious cracks. I got online and found replacement axles for around $250 each in addition to genuine Mercedes Replacement boots for $85 per pair. Anyone have experience replacing the axles or just the boots. Should only genuine Mercedes Axles be used? How bad a job is it? I am still having no luck finding a repair manual. Any thoughts on the spring replacement? Lastly I asked him about a malfunction message I receive when I set the instrument panel to the correct year, month and day. The malfunction keeps reading Main Inspection Performed on Time?. When I set the year back to 2000 the message disappears (I don't know why that works). At first they never heard of the issue so I set it to the correct day, year and month and the malfunction message appeared. Then another technician said to fix it involves programming which takes over an hour because this message is a reminder that a New York Inspection is due, the dealerships have capability not independent shops. Anyone have a similar issue? Does any of this make and sense? Any comments appreciated. Thanks in advance. Re: [MBZ] BenzpR0n of the day - DISTRONIC PLUSĀ® with Steering Assist
No, no! Steering assist is only active when you have the Distronic cruise activated. But it's an assist onlyit doesn't take full control of the wheel, only making it easier to stay in your lane by slightly varying the power assist off the center direction of travel. It won't prevent you from trying to avoid that 2x4 or rain puddle. This is possible now due to the electro-mechanical steering. [MBZ] Oil cooler lines
I took off the oil cooler lines for my 77 300D. It looks like some threads stripped, there are probably enough at the bottom to get the oil cooler back together. There is a fix listed on peachparts that involves tapping threads for new connectors, has anyone done that? Also, the lower hose (old style) is NLA. It has a nubby end, the recommended local hydraulic guy says he can't do it because of how short the end is. BabyQ is of course out today, his site shows it NLA also. So... Re: [MBZ] 2004 MB E 320 4matic visit to Dealership Service Clinic......found bad Front Axles / Springs...........$5, 308.80 to fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure about a car this new, but in general, (For the cars from 86 through ~2000) the OE axles are what you want. If you can't see cracks in the boots, I would not worry about them. It is normal to have some weeping of the grease through the boot ends. If the boots are cracked or near cracking, new boots can be put on. I would run the original axles until they are noisy or broken. As for the spring, it is not a terribly difficult DIY repair. Replace both rear springs at the same time. Used Springs should be available via car-part.com ~100/pair or less. New through Q jr. may not be much more than that. I'd replace both rear springs ASAP, but can't say on the axles/axel boots, obviously you don't want to let things go. Certainly a good independent could get things sorted out for a little less? But please make sure if you go that route, that only MB or quality OEM parts are used. Re: [MBZ] Topsider Oil removal
Why all the fuss? I've been using a cheap [$25 off the internet] fuel pump for so long I can't remember exactly when I got it. A trip to the hardware store for barb fittings , fuel hose,[in and out] a piece of semi-rigid nylon tubing with a 30 degree angle cut on the bottom end [so it doesn't suck flat to the bottom of the oil pan] and a scrap [almost] plastic 5 gallon fuel jerry can. I insert the suck tube down the dip stick hole, put the pump output tube in the 5 gal jerry can, hook the fuel pump up to the battery [I did wire in an on/off switch just for convenience, and alligator clips to the ends of the wires], flip the switch on and let the pump do the work. I started using this rig for a generator which was mounted in a no access position, found it was so handy I now use it for other oil changes. The pump does 3 gallons of oil in 15 minutes and the battery has plenty of reserve to handle that. [Never tried it in freezing cold with frozen oil.. so, warm the engine, I suppose] In fact, that works so well, I just bought another one and use it to bleed brakes. Use clear poly hose, hook pump to bleed screw, open bleed screw, open master cylinder cap, turn on pump and suck the old dead brake fluid out of the master cylinder and line. A soft drink 2 liter bottle works for receptacle for the old fluid, Just pump it right in. Once the master cylinder is empty, [and clean to your satisfaction] reverse the direction of the pump [put the intake side hose in a fresh bottle of clean fluid and hook the output side hose to the brake bleed nipple, open the nipple, turn on the pump and push clean brake fluid from the bottom up to the master cylinder. [leave the cap lightly on in case it squirts out {some do that} ] Once you have enough fluid in the master cylinder to cover the bottom, close the bleed screw and move to the next wheel. Repeat as necessary. The clear poly hose lets you see fluid being moved into the system. Pushing fluid from the bottom lets the trapped air rise [which it naturally wants to do]. You may find this to be the most simple one man brake bleed system you ever used. Once you have visually added a bit of fluid from each wheel [bottom up] top off the master cylinder and try the brakes.. you should have full peddle pressure within a couple strokes. So far, it has worked every time for cars, and trucks. I'm sure some engineer somewhere is right now designing a system that defeats mine.. but not yet. HTH, Grant... Time to rebuild the odo. You'll have to take it apart to determine if the little gear is slipping on the shaft, or disintegrated. On 87 up, it is disintegration, on older cars, slipping. I'm not sure where 1985 falls. If slipping, take a file and rough up the shaft and side of the gear, and epoxy or use the thick superglue to glue the gear to the shaft. hi all! i noticed last week that the odometer and trip meter seemed to 'stick' for a few miles, while the speedo seemed to behave normally. is this the typical symptom of the gears slipping on their shaft, or something else? any tips on how to narrow it down to what needs attention, or any instructions on how i might approach addressing this myself? cheers! e '85 300D ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

So the basis of that dribble is that if the citizens of Germany, Russia, Japan, etc had been armed that there would not have been as many deaths or the dictatorships would not have happened? I don't think so. A tiny amount of red locktite between the shaft and gear works better than scratching or roughing it, and you don't have to take the thing apart to do it either, just work the shaft back and forth a bit. Also, NEVER reset the trip odometer with the car in motion. Doing so briefly locks the gear train, and worsens the slippage. Pushbutton type is worse that the turn until they all read zero type. Instrument cluster didn't change at all during the W123 run other than the speedo being specific for the rear end ratio. Going to an electronic speedo/odo is a pretty big change, nobody is going to do that on the last year of a model. Re: [MBZ] OT: shot Down in Flames gun propaganda!
The point that civilians with hunting rifles are no match for the military power is a point that is truly off point. In the case of guys like hitler, stalin, po pot, ad nausium, the point is not civilians against the military after these despotic s took charge of the military and used them against the civilian populations... the valid point is civilians vs despots before they gain total control and military power... Case in point.. Hitler was a very unsuccessful civilian and successful in manipulation to gain power. There could be good argument made that had the citizenry simply paid attention and used the application of armed force at that early stage, millions of lives world wide would have not been lost. One armed citizen, with one bullet, at the right time and place, millions alive because of it. Not citizens with hunting rifles and kitchen knives against a well armed and supplied military.. In response to Greg, above Afgani comment. I lived in Afghanistan and the Northern Tribal Territories for 7 years. I have seen the gun makers in action, used the weapons they made, had them make some for my personal use. This was many years ago and even then, an AK-47 was well within their work scope. However, the Russians made so many, why bother making one when you could just shoot a Russian and take his along with his ammo and food. Case in point, poorly armed civilians with purpose against huge, well armed and supplied army... Who went home and who stayed? Your call. Grant...
