No same principle applies, say you buy a $500 rust bucket that needs major mechanical work as well. Itemise all the costs and the figure will be way high, depending on how much you can do. The only possible way this could even remotely work is if you are capable of doing ALL the work on the car. The minute you farm something out you're behind. I've gone this route once, buying a Klebmobile thinking it would be relatively simple to buy cheap and save money doing the DIY thing and the numbers just don't work out. This is even more relevant when you factor in the cost of your time. I still believe that the cheapest way to get the nicest and best example of a car is to buy the best one you can afford. [MBZ] OT An eventful morning
I go pick up my wife at the airport this morning, as I am leaving the waiting parking area the Suburban starts hesitating and chugging. The Low Coolant light had come on so while waiting I put in about 1/2 gal of coolant. (THis has been an ongoing occasional issue, no clear source of leaking, figuring at 200k miles the head gasket might be going bad.) Temp not excessive. Get to pick her up and it dies. I get it going again, we get about a half mile down the road, dead no go. I am poking around trying to figure out the problem, I see one plastic press-on heater hose fitting broken at the firewall. That'll do it. So then I am fooling with that and the other one next to it snaps off too. Yay. Looks like there is a valve that controls coolant flow, down at the engine, but started it and it ran a few seconds, coolant puking out the hose so no way to drive it even if it started and ran. So fortunately she has AAA so we call for a tow. Flatbed shows up in like 45min. brings everything home. I am looking up this problem on the intertubes, and see it is a common problem. That's comforting, at least the parts are cheap enough. Was planning to do the 200k service and change all hoses and belts and fluids and such when it cooled down a bit, looks like at least that part will be done sooner. I am hoping that some other problem of a more significant nature did not manifest due to low coolant. I'll probably just bypass the heater for now until I can get parts, see if the thing will start and run after it cools down more. Plus it is in the 90s today, so that will take awhile. --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. [MBZ] An eventful morning + Benz story
I have to get those new fittings tomorrow. For now I put in a piece of 1/2 copper to join the two hoses and bypass the heater core. I started the thing and it was not running off idle at all, then after maybe 30sec at idle it would die. I was thinking that maybe some sensor had gone bad but it's not throwing any codes so that didn't seem to be the problem. I CHECKED THE FUSES and all were fine, at least the ones that had to do with the engine controls and various other indecipherable codes on the fuse pic. So after doing all that it was still not running, I tried a couple more times, and then after 3 or 4 tries it started running fine. Gets me wondering if either the fuel pump is going wonky and not getting enough fuel pressure/delivery, or if it was vapor locked? Does that even happen any more? Tank is at like 3/4 so that is not a problem. Maybe I'll get some new fuel filters and replace those, time to do that anyway. Benz content: The flatbed driver was all fired up when he saw the 84 SD. We got to talking, turns out he is something of a Benz guy, said he had 3, used to have a couple more, his wife was on his ass to get rid of some. Not sure he has diesels or gassers now, one he got rid of was an SD the tranny went bad, some guy kept bugging him to buy it so he sold it with the bad tranny for some decent money. he said he picked them up when he was towing (flatbedding?) them and owners didn't want to spend any more money on them. Got a 190E for nothing, the guy had spent $3k on it trying to get it run right. Driver says he replaced the fuel filters, that still didn't do it, then he saw a fuse for the fuel pump, replaced that, and the thing ran fine. --R On 8/21/14 3:51 PM, Dan Penoff wrote: W140s have a tee fitting on the firewall that likes to crack or break at inopportune times and promptly yak the contents of the cooling system on the ground. Re: [MBZ] An eventful morning + Benz story
I think vapor lock doesn't occur on fuel injected engines since the pump is in the tank and pushes so the lines are always full of liquid fuel. Still you could be short on fuel pressure. Filters are a good place to start. -Curt From: Rich Thomas via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2014 5:05 PM Subject: [MBZ] An eventful morning + Benz story I have to get those new fittings tomorrow. Re: [MBZ] 1984 500SEL Surrender
I don't really need it at this point, but if I could get it for $500 I would jump on it. The car has some potential for a decent driver but not a big money flip. After I got the tank coated and the rest of the car cleaned up I could probably get $1500 for it around here. Any more than $500 and it's not worth the effort. It will cost me $50 in gas just to tow it home. And, I have a car that I'm getting after Labor Day that's going to be occupying my time for a little while anyway. Re: [MBZ] 1984 500SEL Surrender
Speaking of starting reminds me: Coupla weeks ago, I had just made one pass at curb across front yard with JD riding mower when painting crew working on outside of the house pulled up to curb after lunch. I cut the mower off to talk to the painters. Couple minutes later, when I tried to re-start the mower, it only groaned once then nothing. Painters pushed mower and me to within jumper cable distance of the battery in the '87 300D. Mower still only groaned with jumper cables attached. SWMBO pushed mower and me to the mower's parking place. Rain, heat, humidity, skeeters, procrastination and most anything kept me from tackling the mower problem until this morning. Meanwhile, #1 son came and cut grass once and I thought occasionally about how the family's '37 Ford suddenly would not start one weekend in 1948 when I was 14 and had taken the car on extended spins around and around the house many times while my two brothers, who were the family drivers and in charge of the car were on a weekend trip with a third brother. While I worried that my brothers would accuse me of breaking the car, early Sunday afternoon a cousin about the age of one of my driver brothers stopped by for a visit. The cousin asked me why the car was sitting in a strange position in the yard. I told 'im I'd been driving it, and it would not start on Saturday afternoon after I had taken a lunch break from my self-taught driving lessons. He got a wrench, opened the hood ad asked me to Try it now while he tightened the battery cables a bit. That's when I learned about loose and/or corroded battery cables. Shonuff, 'removed the mower battery cables, cleaned the cable ends and the battery terminals, reattached the cables and mower starts right up. Re: [MBZ] 1984 500SEL Surrender
Attaboy indeed. I had a hard time starting my Cub Cadet to plow snow last winter. The 7hp Kohler in it is getting really tired so it needs to crank over for quite awhile before it fires up. I'd been feeding it a little starting fluid which got things going. Finally I rebuilt the starter/generator as I thought maybe bad bearings were keeping it from turning fast enough. The bearings were a little crunchy but not too bad and after the rebuild it started no better. Finally like you inspiration hit and I cleaned both the battery terminals and the hot terminal at the starter/generator, MUCH better. It turns fast enough to start with out help mostly. It'll still want a little help if its sat for any amount of time, like right now for instance. At some point I want to buy a 10hp China diesel. Thats what they call the Chinese copies of the Yanmar diesels. Ought to make that thing into a mean snow plowing machine. With the added power I'll need to fluid fill the tires and add a weight box, which I've never bothered with the old tired 7hp. -Curt From: WILTON via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com To: Dan Penoff d...@penoff.com; Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2014 8:13 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] 1984 500SEL Surrender Speaking of starting reminds me: Coupla weeks ago, I had just made one pass at curb across front yard with JD riding mower when painting crew working on outside of the house pulled up to curb after lunch. But but but the car was 60k new, so it's gotta be a bargain. Anyway, this one has K-jet, which is not as efficient as KE and will require tuning now and then. I think they also made a high compression version of this motor, from memory it will have dual air intakes. If there was a something a bit special about this car or it was completely rust free, then yeah worth mucking around with. Also for a driver the SE is a better proposition, a bit shorter which makes it easier to manoeuvre. Yeah if it was a Euro 500SE with high output motor...or even a later series 2 126, which got nicer leather and other goodies. Hey, you could paint it green and flog it off to Kaleb?
