[MBZ] O/T: Chess

2014-09-22 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Hi:

Is there anyone on the list who likes to play chess? I played as a kid, but
only (mostly) knew how to move the pieces. I am really enjoying it! I am
currently playing one of my sons (the one who owns a Mercedes) and one of
his friends on chess.com. I have played a few games already, and am
learning a lot. Let me know. Perhaps we can play.

Given the $60k price of the USA version, I'm thinking $40k (average price of a
F250 Powerstroke ten years ago) would be a miracle.

Re: [MBZ] Sanden AC kit

2014-09-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Your last statement needs a slight modification:
Kaleb: the reason for the Sanden over the York is that it uses
less power to do just a good enough a job.

The York will freeze you out of the car. Granted a 240D is dragged down to
puttering speed but snow is blowing out the vents. I've never seen another AC
compressor do that...

Well the main reason is that mine seems to be going bad. Not
cooling too well despite near normal pressures (little low on the
high and a little high on the low) but the main thing is that
with AC on and compressor turning, the main shaft of it moves in
and out about 1/8 or a bit more when you rev the engine a bit
(2200 appx. on up. With the clutch disengaged the face is right
close. Engaged it still looks right but when the engine is reved
the center of the clutch shaft/hub moves out. Moves back in as it
gets near to idle (1500 rpm). Yes I did check the bolt on the
front of the clutch and it is not the clutch pulley itself that
is moving so that is still tight on the body and has good
bearings. Also when driving using the AC if the engine hits
higher revs (3500 or more) when accelerating or trans kicks down
when passing it seems to be enough to start the clutch sliding
and AC starts blowing warm. If I turn off the AC and wait 5
seconds or so and start it again the AC will start cooling again
but never to where it should be (60 to 70> deg air vent temp at
90>). My 83 300D with the R4 gets down to 45 at the same temps.
Could be I got a marginal compressor when I bought it new. Cant,
return it as it was more then 1.5 years ago when I bought it.

So I figure if I will have to put a new one on I might as well
spend a little more and have a better compressor that will in the
future cost less to replace and should even be a bit better since
it doesn't tend to circulate oil as much as the R4 thus providing
a bit better cooling, not as much oil in the condenser or evap so
less barrier to heat exchange.

Kaleb: the reason for the Sanden over the York is that it uses
less power to do just as good a job.

Re: [MBZ] 420 SEL

2014-09-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There is a separate thread in the "For sale" forum where a couple of people
have addressed that. A decent used low mile engine would be around $2k.

The problem with that is the loss of matching numbers, if that matters. If it
were me and I wanted to maintain the value and integrity, I would have the
original engine torn down and repaired.

I don't see the R129 being a "classic" for a long, long time. Too many of them
produced and certainly nothing special about the lines or design in my opinion.
 And I own one, too.

The problem with this car, I believe, is the owners are placing too much
emphasis on "potential" value. There is no clear direction on how it might be
repaired or "restored", and no matter how it is done, it will never, ever
possess the value that it held prior to the engine failure.

In my mind the car is worth maybe $10-15k at best. Figure a used engine at $2k
of a complete rebuild at $5k and you still would be hard pressed to recover the
value, if possible.

I think they're screwed if you ask me.

My AC guy in FL would sometimes let the penetrating oil work for days (while
he worked on some other car) reapplying and testing a couple times a day.
He ran a small shop by himself that looked like a junk yard (stacks of dead
compressors, evaporators, etc. in the corners) but his repairs never failed
for me.

You wouldn't buy that car for upside potential. You buy it because you like it

Anyone who buys a car of that age and vintage isn't buying it for upside

Re: [MBZ] Sanden AC kit

2014-09-22 Thread MG via Mercedes

Jaime Kopchinski wrote:

Hi Manfred,
Why replace the R4? I've found them to work pretty well and be reasonably
smooth on the diesel. Power useage isn't too bad on the turbo too.

If you had a york (or a 240D), I'd understand... I just replaced one of
these with a sanden in a 70 280se with good results. I used a generic
bracket and made my own hoses, but this is much easier with the early cars.

I'm also about to so the same on a 74 240d. Should be nice.

Jaime

Agreed. There's got to be some attachment or emotion involved, or they're
"blinded by the tristar" and have unrealistic ideas of its value.

There's a 3400 mile 1991 500SL on BW right now. The owners, an older couple
who bought the car new, went for a drive and found the car had a head gasket
leak, which was due to a failure of the metal on the block at the edge of one
of the cylinder bores. Only fix is new engine or tear down the existing one
and weld/machine the block. Needless to say it's a big chunk of change for
either.

They're trying to sell it now, quoting the original sticker price, etc.,
without much activity other than people politely telling them they're nuts.

Ok, so the price is not stupid - just on the high side of what you would
think down where you are.

I am in Canada and there are a lot fewer of this sort of thing around here.
If we adjust for the difference in the dollar then we also take about
10% off these days too.

[MBZ] 124 condenser replacement

2014-09-22 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dieselvolk,

Any tips/tricks to loosening the pipe connections on an '87 124? I've been
soaking them in PB Blaster for a couple days. They appear to be dissimilar
metals (hose vs. condenser fitting) and I am afraid they will gall badly
when I try to loosen them, similar to the galling that occurs when removing
the oil cooler fittings on a 123 car.

Air pump on eldest boy's W124 is making the putt-putt-putt sound when running.
I'm assuming there's maybe a leak somewhere, or the little valve on the output
is hinky?

Any negatives about disconnecting the pump and just ignoring it?
