Aren't there places east of Colorado Springs that _still_ don't

If you mean, "roads down which no electric lines run," that's true.

I would guess that all the homes have commercial electricity -- the folks
who bought our place ran electric lines to it. That prompted several
others to build out there (which is why we didn't have electric lines
run).

The Rural Electrification Administration (REA) is a credit agency of the
U.S. Department of Agriculture which assists rural electric and telephone
organizations in obtaining the financing required to provide electric and
telephone service in rural areas. These essential services help improve
the quality of life for people who live, work, or do business throughout
rural America. Financial assistance may include (a) loans from REA, ( b )
guarantees of loans made by others, and (c) REA approval of security
arrangements which permit the borrower to obtain financing from other
lenders without a guarantee.

REA was first established by Executive Order 7037 on May 11, 1935, as
part of a general program of unemployment relief. It soon became clear,
however, that the task of extending central station electric service to
rural areas required very specialized skills (engineering, management,
etc.) that would be difficult to attract if REA operated under the
constraints of the unemployment relief authorization. REA was given its
own statutory authorization by the Rural Electrification Act of May 20,
1936. It became part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture on July 1,
1939.

Re: [MBZ] Grant's New Motorhome

2014-12-30 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Sounds like a story my uncle tells. They had a motorhome and had gone to
Florida to Disney World from Canada. About the time they got there the
oil pressure light came on. He checked it out and discovered the feed to
the oil pressure gauge had cracked and was spraying oil. He poured in
some more oil and stopped at a FLAPS for a new gauge etc and then while
my aunt and cousins went into the park, he stayed in the parking lot and
repaired the motorhome and then had a shower and a cold beer. He did not
really care much about the park.

I have a similar story of my own but not for a motorhome.
My 86 Taurus kept make growling noises but I could not see anything
wrong with it. This went on for months and I assumed sooner or later it
would become obvious.
We went to Grand Forks ND, about 140 miles away for the weekend. Went to
Grand Forks on Friday and then another 70 miles south to Fargo on
Saturday and came back to Grand Forks Saturday afternoon.
It was October but a nice day and on the way back, I turned on the AC.
There was a distinct growl from under the hood but then all was well.
We got back to the motel in GF and later went out for dinner. That is
when it became more obvious. The water pump was leaking and we were
getting a fog out the back as we drove to dinner.
This is back before Sunday shopping was common in ND so there was not
much we could do about it.
We started it up Sunday morning and drove a little bit out of town but
it was pretty obvious that we had better not head for home. We rented a
car and spent the day just looking around GF as not much was open.
Monday morning I had a choice of either taking it to a local shop or
doing it myself. I figured it would take about as long if I did it or
waited for them to do so. I had no tools with but also thought I might
as well buy tools as pay labour. We went to a FLAPS and got a water pump
and some tools and I changed the pump in the parking lot at the motel.
We were next door to the mall with a WalMart so my wife went back and
forth to buy the things I had not thought of earlier - hand cleaner,
paper towel, a screwdriver, etc. Got the pump on and returned the rental
car by noon and headed for home. That was sort of a gold plated water
pump as it cost us an extra day in the motel plus meals and a rental car
as well as the cost of the parts and the tools and my wife and I each a
day's pay. However, I still have the tools I bought that day and was
quite proud of myself for doing it quickly in less than great
circumstances. I had not done one on such a vehicle with the transverse
V6 but the only real difference between it and more conventional
vehicles that I had worked on in the past was the serpentine belt setup
and the minimal space to work on it.

Since this is my 4th bus, conversion to motor home, I'm well armed with
things like a pair of 20 ton jacks, 1 inch impact wrench, air compressor
driven by the on board generator [belt drive to the compressor, not
electrical] and pretty much a full compliment of spares and tools.

This bus uses 12R x 22.5 , 16 ply tires, which are not "common" . Average
list price per tire is above $500, and you can expect to have to ship it
in, not be "in stock". Most OTR trucks use 11R x 22.5, 12 or 14 ply. One
could be used as a "limp to somewhere to get a 12R fitted... It does
however, carry a spare, mounted to rim.

Worst case roadside disaster for this machine would require a special low
boy flatbed Landoll trailer.. Air ride suspension will not permit hook and
tow for prolonged distance, only enough to remove it from the scene of
active traffic. Towing insurance, Platinum Card variety, is an absolute
requirement. Sort of on the same scale as carrying survival raft on a big
boat.

I think I may be about 4 working days from doing first start on the $16,000
new engine [parts cost for the rebuild that came in the paperwork when I
bought the bus] ... I would like that to go well...

If there is a sacrifice that is made to some machinery god before such
events, please advise.. there does however seem to be a shortage of
requisite virgins however.. ;))

[MBZ] OT: *sigh* what a day

2014-12-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'll cut out all the angst and explanation. Today I managed to:
1. Fix many leaks in a snowmobile exhaust, some of my best welding.
2. Lock up a snowmobile engine - different machine than the exhaust I was
working on but one of my favorites
3. Kill my compressor - Twas only a Harbor Freight cheapie 2 gallon 1HP but I'd
had it for awhile and liked it. I ran it low on oil and then worked it hard and
the connecting rod bearing seized. Since I had nothing to lose I pulled it
apart and broke the cooling fan. The bearing in question sits quite high and
must get lubricate by magic, I'm not sure I understand how the oil gets up
there, maybe blowby splashes oil up? With the top end removed I was able to get
the bearing free but doubtless its not a happy piece of equipment.
Looking at the HF website I think I'll get this:
http://www.harborfreight.com/21-gal-25-hp-125-psi-cast-iron-vertical-air-compressor-61454.html
21 gal, 2.5HP which is the one I probably should have gotten in the first
place...

[MBZ] Clutch master cylinder

2014-12-30 Thread fmiser via Mercedes
Four years ago I refreshed the clutch master cylinder pulled from
one of the parts cars to put in a 240 that I drive. I could not
find any new rubber parts, so is wasn't really a rebuild - just a
bore hone and cleanup. But it lasted four years.

And then it failed.

And I really miss Q!

For those with a long memory, Curt had issues with his clutch not
long after I refreshed mine. We compared notes. Best I can tell,
the early cars have a long rod and the newer cars a short rod. The
different in length is 5 mm.

I can't find an EPC that works for me, but via other methods, I
_think_ newer than chassis number 091119 needs the short rod -
probably part number 000-295-08-33. The master cylinder part number
is 001-295-44-06. What I suspect now, but couldn't prove before is
that the master cylinder always comes with the long rod and a short
rod has to be purchased if it is needed for a newer car.
Probably. I think.

So I finally decide to purchase from MercedesSource, since they
ship with both rods. What the website doesn't say is the
manufacturer.

Well, the one I got from them does have both rods. In a TRW box.
With "Lucas" cast into the body of the master cylinder. Uh oh.

It's very obvious my car needs the short rod. But a little closer
look suggests maybe even the short rod is too long...

Well, I install the master cylinder, making sure the adjuster
eccentric is at it's longest setting. The way to bleed the system,
and to set the eccentric, is to pressure bleed from the slave
cylinder. I can't - because the piston is too far down in the
master cylinder and is blocking the supply port. That is, the rod
is too long. The _short_ rod is too long.

*sigh*

So much for TRW.

Another way to tell the rod is too long is in mounting. If there
is fluid in the master cylinder, the rod (and piston) will move a
millimeter or two before the supply port is covered. At this point,
it becomes _very_ hard to press because any pressure is trying to
compress the clutch spring.

But the car is "down", and it will be at least _days_ before I can
get something else.

So I choose to shorten the rod. Careful measurements on the bench
between the new TRW and the old FAG shows the TRW to be 3 mm to
long. But it's not the rod. The rod is exactly the same length as
the old FAG - it's the position of the piston top that is too far
from the mounting bolt ears.

There is a ball form on the end of the rod. I choose to try to
keep the radius of the contact with the piston about the same. I
grind, file, sand, and polish the rod making it about 2 mm
shorted. Nope - not enough. I remove another 1 mm. Now it
works. A total of about 3 mm ground of the end of the rod to make
the TRW part work in my car.

The car is working properly - but I'm sure not happy with
MercedesSource for not listing the manufacturer and for choosing
TRW, which seems to be junk.

I sure miss the knowledge, support, and service Q provided.

Re: [MBZ] Clutch master cylinder

2014-12-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Interesting. I gave Dimitri the replacement slave cylinder I'd bought. I always
kind of thought that putting the slave to match the master might fix the
problem.Your car had more severe issues than mine, on mine it was just that
engagement was very high, I had no problem bleeding the clutch or with
operation just that it had a funny feel.

 Subject: [MBZ] Clutch master cylinder

2014-12-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
There are kerosene Coleman lanterns too. Lately I'm into Tilly though. Weird
little lanterns.
I've got an Aladdin that Fred gave me, nice and quiet and frugal on fuel. At
camp we've got a hot blast lantern and a dead flame wick lamp. I want to get a
cold blast lantern as I've read that they put out a white light. The hot blast
light is decidedly yellow but the lantern is very frugal on fuel, one pint is
good for ~30 hours. We use it as a night light outside during deer camp to make
answering the call of nature easier.

G: You might say it was becoming "common" beginning in the late
1920s. Parents had a frig and Maytag wringer washer before I was
born in 1929, as did aunts family; both of which were blue collar
working class and not "rich".

I remember replacing the belt on my sisters ammonia frig in the
early 1940s, but our apartment in Tampa still had an icebox in 1946
after WW-2. Nationwide, such "progress" has always been spotty it
seems.

The only place people could enjoy air conditioning before window
units became available in the early 1950s was downtown stores and
movie theatres; especially in the South. People would often go the
the movies just to get away from the 24/7 heat and humidity of Tampa
in the summer.

At the National Museum of Naval Aviation, the WWII homefront display
shows a home with a kitchen cupboard with flour bin/sifter, a glass
butter churn, a hand meat grinder, and a refrigerator with a globe
condensor on top. So, according to that museum, refrigerators were
common before /during WWII. YMMV, and certainly on farms without
electricity, there was no Refer.

My grandmother had a refrigerator with the cylindrical condensor on
top until the 60s when we moved it to the boathouse. My other
grandparents had a Delco light plant in the 20s until rural electric
came through. It was still there until about 1970 when my dad sold
it.

If LT Don is lurking, the museum now has an enlarged USCG display.
