Yes. I just finished stripping about 400 sf of roof to put down a double
layer of ice and snow block to cure a stubborn series of leaks over a
shallow cricket. IMO. CFLs and LEDs just don't cost that much to run.
Besides, a little waste heat is a bonus half of the year.

Won’t be the last hole I’ll cut in a roof. If it’s done carefully and
correctly, leaks should be the last thing to worry about.

I’ve cut holes in a number of roofs for skylights, exhaust stacks, fans, etc.
Never had a leak to this day.

When I bought my current house, with plans to put in a 95% furnace, my realtor
suggested I tear out the masonry chimney and put in a 2nd bathroom closet.
I thought he was nuts. It's a lot of work to disassemble a chimney, then you've
got a 18" square hole in the roof to fix, then you have to build a closet that's
only a few feet away from an existing closet...

After I switched to an electric water heater, I siliconed a 12" square patio
block to the top of the 8" clay flue and a steel plate over the flue entry hole
in the basement to seal off the chimney. If anybody wants to put a woodburner in
some day, there's a good chimney ready to use.

Stall is all about airspeed (not enough) and angle of attack (too much).
Amazing vertical wind currents are possible around thunder storms.
Downdrafts can be dangerous. I don't see how an updraft would cause a crash
unless the flight crew was disoriented and made bad choices or structural
limits were exceeded.

Isn't it more likely that the storm in some manner interfered with the

Is that not what happened with the Air France plane that went down in

Numerous times. Piece of cake, as they are not unique to each side. Pop them
out, swap them between sides, and you’re done.

Open the door, peel back the weatherstrip behind the weatherstrip or pry open
the oval plastic plug (I can’t recall which it is on the W123).

Behind the weatherstrip or plug are two large phillips head screws. Remove
them.

Get a plastic or rubber mallet, or a piece of wood and a hammer, and tap the
trailing edge of the handle towards the front of the car. This will release the
handle from the door skin, after which you can carefully pull the handle out of
the opening. Have a key handy, as you may need to turn the lock to disengage
the locking pin from the door latch.

Installation is the reverse of the process.

[MBZ] Quiet day on the list

2015-01-20 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes

This being a quiet day on the list, I have a question about the Air Asia flight
that went down.
Todays news websites report that the plane apparently climbed at 600 ft/min,
stalled, and then crashed. That rate of climb is beyond its capability without
stalling according to the reports.
My question is: could the storm the plane was trying to avoid have had updrafts
severe enough to "lift" the plane at that rate of ascent?
The pilot on a blog I accessed described what can happen when a plane gets out
of its "envelope" but doesn't mention anything about the storm itself possibly
having been responsible for the rapid ascent.
Thanks,

G: Problem with the one that was installed when we had the house built in 1996
is that the light is not regulated. (Later models may have a regulation
feature?)
When clouds are passing over; especially small clouds; the room can annoyingly
go bright-dark-bright-dark repeatedly.
Since the cost of LED lighting is fairly low, I'm thinking of blocking the
Solatube and installing an LED fixture in it or over it.

Our '82 240D engine, which Kaleb has now, did not have it.

It is interesting it is a 110 part number. I never saw one on a 110
or even a /8, but i did not see under the hood of many /8s and never
owned one. I've only seen the rack and pinion adjuster on 123s. I
suppose it is possible that the last few months of production of 110s
and 111s may have it on. My newest 110 was made in Sept, 1965, and
it has the the thin threaded rod with the clamp nut/bracket.

I know the 110s originally came out with a stamped steel alt mount
and those broke. Mine broke in about 1973 or 4. About a year after
I got the car. I put a generator on from a older car. end of
problems. By the 123, they used the cast iron alt mount, and i've
never seen one of those break in the first 300,000 miles.

piece of the brakeline to replace the bad

I have wanted to do this for a long time, and in other homes as well, but never

Our current home has very little in the way of outside light coming in to the main living area, primarily due to the
back of the house being "U" shaped with a roof over the center of the "U". At the bottom of the
"U" are sliding glass doors opening into our family room and kitchen area. While this side of the house faces
south, there are 60' oak trees at the back of our very shallow back yard that block the sun even more. As a result of
this the interior portion of the house is what I often refer to as being "tomb-like".

Adding tubular skylights to this area would go a long way to lightening it up,
but before I can convince SWMBO of such a significant alteration to the living
area I'm going to do it in the laundry room. This is a room off the garage
that we enter and exit through, and it has no outside exposure whatsoever. By
putting a tubular skylight here I know the impression will be a favorable one,
ideally gaining acceptance for the method and allowing me to move forward in
doing the same for the living area.

While I have been a fan of Solatube, I found that the Velux line that is
readily available through the big box home improvement stores is just as good
and nowhere near as pricey.

Home Depot is cheaper than Lowe's, but I prefer working with Lowe's. I'm going
to swing by there today and see if they will match Home Depot's price, as it's
about $30 cheaper.

Our current home has very little in the way of outside light coming in to the
main living area, primarily due to the back of the house being "U" shaped with
a roof over the center of the "U". At the bottom of the "U" are sliding glass
doors opening into our family room and kitchen area. While this side of the
house faces south, there are 60' oak trees at the back of our very shallow back
yard that block the sun even more. As a result of this the interior portion of
the house is what I often refer to as being "tomb-like".
