Bill wasn't president very long before Hillary tried to ram through her version
of Obamacare. Hillary has too much of that sort of political baggage. If the
Dems run her, the outcome is predictable.
Warren would have a far better chance since few people know anything about her
outside of the northeast and Washington.
However, since the Supreme Court has allowed foreign individuals, corporations,
and governments to contribute to U.S. political campaigns, the party with the
biggest war chest will probably win if they spend it wisely.

[MBZ] another oddball: Door Check

2015-03-28 Thread Curly McLain
One of the new door checks has gotten noisy, so I tried to take it
apart and grease it. I've done this many times before. I have not
done it for a few years, so I forgot how I squeezed the balls
together to reassemble.

I was trying to squeeze the balls together with channellocks, but
ended up losing one of the balls. They are 15mmm dia. Went to the
local bearing house, and they didn't have any.

Has anyone ever found a source for these? (15mm steel balls)

Afterwards, I remembered how I did it. I squeezed the balls together
in the vice, then slipped the center assembly into the outer case.

The door checks I have done with Molykote BR2 around the springs and
in the slides have never failed or needed to be re-lubed.

Some of the ones I have reassembled have had badly rusted and pitted
balls. I've wished I had new balls to put in them.

Sometimes when I bought new ones, i got in a hurry and just put them
in. It seems ridiculous to take apart a new one to lube between the
balls. New ones have a very small amount of lube on them.

Now I have a supply of lubed ones at home. I was at Daughter's house
and had no spares there. I had to rob one from another car until I
return to replace it.

2015-03-28 Thread Curly McLain

Andrew sez: The concern is that
warming of the polar regions is causing the ice caps to melt and sea level
to relentlessly rise, all because of growing CO2 emissions from industrial
sources world wide.

The solution is simple. Plant more trees. Water the great deserts,
grow trees and food, and use up this alleged excess of co2. Much
less costly and way more productive than what the albore crowd
proposes.

If the sea level raises, desalinate the water and pump it into the
deserts to effect the above.

My suggestion is at LEAST as valid as what the albore crowd suggests,
and much more productive. Takes care of the alleged co2 AND the
alleged rising sea level.

But the underlying premises are still based on falsified "data" and
faulty computer models that have been discredited.

2015-03-28 Thread Jim Cathey
Anybody know anything about this? I got an old mid 60's family
heirloom I want to fix and thought about trying to tackle it myself.
Last I remember in the early 90's last time it worked was a loud pop
and it quit. IIRC repair guy said it needed new transistors.

He may be right. Know that this will totally be labor of
love, and not cost-effective.

Early solid-state electronics tended to be a bit fragile, and
one bad part could result in a chain-reaction of silicon meltdown.
You may need many transistors.

Before you buy anything test any transformer windings that are
there. If any of those are bad, well... Look for smoked and
melted wiring. Any of that is a pretty bad sign.

Electrolytic capacitors may be dried-up, and dead. Plan on replacing
them all. Pull all the transistors and test them. Replace all that
don't pass muster, and NEVER feed the system power until you are sure
that all bad parts are replaced.

When powering it up use a variac to slowly bring up the line voltage.
Keep an eye on the current, and feel around for heat. You don't want
to blow the entire silicon (or germanium!) complement with one flip
of the switch if you haven't found everything that is dead! Or you
get to do it all, AGAIN!

Any documentation you can scare up will be a godsend. You need
at a minimum a variac, and a good meter with a diode test function.
You can check transistors for basic death using nothing more than
that, but you have to do it out-of-circuit.

I guess I shoulda' tried this sooner, but I dug out a new key I had made a
couple years ago and the trunk of my '84 300D opened OK. There appears to
be quite a bit of wear to the original key over the years.

Re: [MBZ] Ted Cruz?

2015-03-28 Thread G Mann
Thank you for the question.

The only real vote I would cast for any of the current crop of POTUS
hopefuls would be as a member of the jury that has heard the full details
of their collective criminal violations of law while abusing the public
trust.

So, in this hypothetical, I would vote.

Andrew, just for the record, I consider myself almost exactly in the
center.. between Atala the Hun, and Vlad the Impaler... so I'm a "middle of
the road voter"... The only hemp I own is in the form of 3/4 inch rope..
and I have a good supply of that.. I also own my own full size functional
razor sharp Guillotine.

Since 1731, my family has served in every military action this country has
entered into, including 1776. Over the generations of family we have
gathered two CMH, numerous silver and bronze stars, more purple hearts than
we wanted [dads brother gathered 7 in the Pacific island campaign as a
Marine] as well as numerous other medals for serving this country with
honor. We claim graduates from every military academy, one president
[mothers side of the house], and several who have held public office as
civilians.. The closest any of the family has come to prison is one Uncle
who served as a Chaplin at Leavenworth Prison facility. So, I believe I
have "skin in the game" in what happens to this country, and I'm not
pleased with current direction the country is being taken over the past 40
years.

Who ever serves next as POTUS had better bring his "A" game.. and the "A"
better stand for "America" and what's best for it.

Jeb has not shown he has an "A" game to me. Neither has any of the others
who show interest in the job.

Re: [MBZ] The Search Continues....

2015-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff
And in far poorer condition, too.

Kaleb, you might be able to comment on something I came across the other day

A guy in Sarasota has been advertising an S500. It's listed as a private sale.
I talk to him and he starts talking about how it's got an "open title" and
that he's selling it for his employer, a independent car dealer.

In other words, they took a car in trade or in kind for something, the seller
signed the title, and they never recorded the title. So, the title has the
signature of the previous owner, which makes anyone who has it the owner of the
car.

This has shady written all over it. Is it legal?

I should have asked him who would be on the bill of sale as the seller if I
bought it?

I'm going to pop down to the DMV office in my building on Monday and ask them
about it.

2015-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff
If any vergasser owners out there need wires, I recommend this guy:

He's a tech at a dealership in South Florida and does a good job. I've bought

I hope that grows to critical mass.
But what is the objective?
What are stated goals?
Meaningless goals / objectives become hard to put your life on the line.
Jobs? Social Security? Education? Income gap? - all the normal blah blah?
Or can this 'movement' arrive at some clear stated objectives / goals?
It seems it is currently people without much to do, finding tv to be

Re: [MBZ] Old stereo repair

2015-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff
You might be surprised at how many tubes are still being manufactured offshore
these days. The center for reproduction tubes is Eastern Europe and some of the
former Soviet republics, where the tooling was preserved and put back into
production.

One of my fellow workers is big into vintage guitar amps, and he's found all
sorts of reproduction tubes for them from these vendors.

As for paying for schematics, you're talking about Sams Photofacts, the premier
repository of schematics and parts lists for nearly everything electronic back
in the day. Usually quite good with pictures and lots of details. Sams used
to have a subscription service that repair shops used to get schematics and
parts lists.

Here's one way someone repurposed their old RCA console:

There may be some misunderstanding regarding the trunk lock problem in my '84
300D.
1. Yes, the key inserts thoroughly but will not unlock the trunk. Pushing the
button to open the trunk doesn't feel as if it's engaging anything.
2. Since I don't believe there is access to the trunk from behind the rear
seat, I would wonder how one would suggest cleaning the lock mechanism.

See ya', stay healthy.

If it's a tube unit some (if not all) of those tubes might be NLA and
expensive as used.

Some of those old radio/stereo cabinets are repurposed as cabinets for
stereo/computer components. My daughter has a pre 50s radio cabinet with a
router and printer inside.

[MBZ] The Search Continues....

2015-03-28 Thread Dan Penoff
But it seems to be getting better, thank goodness.

Looked at this 1996 S320 today:

http://tampa.craigslist.org/hdo/cto/4947867972.html

Been chasing this guy for a week. He just reposted the ad a few days ago and
raised the price $400 - it had been up for over a month at $6400. I suspected
this was due to the "100,000 mile service and overhaul by Mercedes specialist
costing $2,500" he just did. So I drove the 90 minutes to Brookville to have a
look

The car was described as in the ad. Very clean, well maintained, all service
records for his ownership, etc. Two dings that I found: the mirrors didn't
work, which he pointed out, as he had used RTV to seal the joints between the
mirror housing and doors and added a chrome trim strip across the front of
both. Ouch. Nasty, but reversible. No doubt the mirror wiring harnesses have
failed. Not a pleasant repair, but a DIY one that takes about two hours a
mirror.

As for the recent "overhaul", he was pretty much spot-on. He took the car in
for service and his mechanic noticed the head gasket was seeping at the rear of
the engine. This guy pretty much gives his mechanic free reign from what I
could tell, and it was clear to me that the mechanic has some boat payments
he's got to make. So a couple of weeks ago the car gets a new head gasket,
thermostat, new radiator (??) and tranny fluid and filter change. This was all
apparent from inspection as well.

Get this - I checked the coolant in the reservoir and couldn't make out the
color. There was this beige crud in the reservoir that would stick to my glove
if I put my finger into the coolant. Weird. I an only assume it was some sort
of sludge or crud left in the reservoir that didn't get flushed out when the
radiator got replaced. I wonder if it was ATF? The color was weirdly
reminiscent of ATF that had been in water...

Strange, very strange.

Other than that everything worked, the body was almost a 9.9 out of 10, and the
interior immaculate. The PSE pump was acting up as all of the doors' closing
assists weren't working - when I point this out he tells me that he had noticed
this and found that by pulling the fuse they would work again for a while.
That's because there's a leak and the pump section for that door is timing out.

Being a 1996 model I'm wondering if some of the dreaded wiring harness issues
could still be lurking on this car. The engine harness looked OK, but the
mirrors are another place where the biodegradable wiring fails big-time. It's
possible the engine harness was replaced in the past.

All in all a good prospect, but this guy's not motivated to sell and will
probably not budge on price due to his recent expenditures. I'm betting he
expects to recoup some of his expenses on top of what he was previously asking.
We'll see. The guy was like someone out of the Sopranos. Dark complected
Mediterranean looking guy, open shirt with his gold chain and astral sign
medallion, bouffant-like hair, pinkie ring, etc. I'm wondering if I make him
too low of an offer I'll be swimming with the fishes

Here's my next prospect:

http://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/4952435910.html

Just got an email back from the owner and I'm trying to set up a visit as soon
as possible. This looks nice and could be an excellent choice if it's as
described. What's weird is that he posted it in Orlando but he's in Wesley
Chapel, which is about 40 minutes directly north of me. That's probably good
for me.

Re: [MBZ] Old stereo repair

2015-03-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
I found a place online that I can download the service info part list etc for
about $20. I guess if I have the numbers I can just order all the caps and
transistors? Then it's just a matter of soldering them off and on? Do you have
to have any sort of test equipment?

Most likely in my experience is electrolytic capacitors that have dried
out. I'd replace all of them, then see what else needs replacing. Do you
have, or can you get a schematic for it? It should be all discrete
components, so shouldn't be hard to replace whatever it is that blew. If it
doesn't have any tubes, there will be no high voltage, so parts should not
be hard to find - maybe you need to buy out your local Radio Shack before
it closes for good ???

Re: [MBZ] Ted Cruz?

2015-03-28 Thread G Mann
By all appearances and actions, displayed by Mrs. Clinton [in this example]
there is a presumption of privilege by those in office, which is taken to
mean, by actions, the law does not apply to them personally. Further, that
any act done, for any purpose of their design, is above censure or
punishment. This attitude now carries equally to either dominate political
party with few exceptions.

As a Citizen of America [Natural Born, for any who care] such attitude by
people who hold office with the responsibility to represent me, and other
Citizens, is insulting in the highest possible degree.

We are a civilized nation with laws that apply to everyone equally, or none
apply to any. On hypothetical principle, since they choose to breach the
law, then law has no standing to the rest of the Citizens. Thus, on
hypothetical principle, if those Citizens choose to no longer be governed
by law either, it's an equal playing field.

I do wonder if these self appointed royalty with presumed privilege ever
thought that all the way through? In the words of a certain French royal,
when the French didn't use white flags but Guillotines.. "Let them eat
cake"... hmm

I'm no prophet.. but I can predict.. and I predict soon rather than
later... Americans in general will reach the threshold where they have had
enough. What form that takes might take the services of a prophet, because
my prediction has a lot of people saying as their last words "O God".

Respectfully,
Grant...

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes pickup

2015-03-28 Thread Jim Cathey

The load of manure I hauled a few years ago would not have
been welcome in a T. The old Chevy drew that duty. The
_two_ ECO-blocks I brought home in the Dodge would have
strained a T's capabilities, to say the least. A truck
is often well worth having.

If you need to haul people, get a sedan. If you need to haul stuff,
get a truck, if you need to haul both, get one of each.

However, when we're hauling a 3000# camper, the extended-cab
full-bed truck is just the ticket. It also generally gets
better mileage than anything else we drive. (Campered it gets
in the 12-15 range, up to 26 unloaded on the freeway.)

The only thing it's bad at is knocking around town. It's
big. Hard to park. I would never choose it as an only
vehicle, but it's a great second vehicle.

That MB pickup is just too weirdly styled for my taste.
The bed also looks rather small. I think what I might really
like is an El-camino'd 107 SL. That would be fun!

Our DMV is great, and I've never had a problem with it.

In Florida, driver's licenses and titles/registrations are done by the County
tax collector, a County entity that acts as the agent for the State. This
means you're dealing with locals wherever you go.

For instance, Florida has an "administrative fee" of $225 they charge on any
non-Florida vehicle being titles and registered in the state. That means when
i bought Tarek's S500 and Tom's S420 I would get dinged for the $225 on top of
the regular title and registration fees.

However, if you have a "open" registration, that is, a former vehicle that was
registered but never taken out of the system by turning in the old plate, you
can use that registration to transfer to the new vehicle, effectively doing an
end run around the out of state penalty.

This is not a published rule - you have to know about it or your DMV/tax
collector person does. And they do.

In both cases, before I could even bring the subject up, the person handling my
transaction looked in my records for an open registration to apply to the cars.
My 1982 300SD that I sold in 2000 still sits out in the ether, donating it's
registration to any out of state cars I purchase. Their willingness to assist
saved me $450.

I've had similar experiences with the title/registration process for other
issues as well, and they've always been very helpful and willing to direct me
through the bureaucracy.

Re: [MBZ] stupid

Yes, I live in a low tax, "right to work", republican dominated state.

Service at our DMV and other state offices is generally decent.

Example: When I bought my E300, it was in pieces in my garage for a year before
I repaired it to the point I was ready for a test drive. Online DMV info
seemed to indicate I would have to pay the past years fees (registration and
property tax) and a small fine. I took my paperwork and explained my
situation, the clerk said "just sign a statement that the car was inoperable
then no fees or fines".

Example 2: last fall the two-year registration on my boat expired and I missed
the deadline to renew by a couple of days. The online system indicated "no
fine" however, and passed me to a third-party payment website. That payment
website charged me the fine, $5. I was concerned that the third-party folks
would keep the fine, so I called the state office, lines were busy so I left a
message. Next day the supervisor of the office called, apologized, assured me
my new registration stickers were on their way as well as a refund check for
the $5

Example 3: I've also had the state revenue office call me when I dorked up my
state tax return, tell me how to fix it, and follow up with with email to let
me know it was fixed.

I suspect that many elected officials run as republicans so they can get
elected, but really are democrats, they just stay in the closet.

If that were true, DC, Chicago, and NYC would have the best schools (and
lowest crime)in the country.
