Wilton,

We always carried two large zip lock bags with dry sponges in them in our
gear... Amazing how you attention span can be improved by relieving
yourself and the sponges kept the liquid from sloshing. Do not however,
stow them in your helmet bag after use... don't ask why I know this..

If you plan ahead, you get ahead.

Yes that's what I got except I got the next one up that has dye and a drying
agent in it. After I replace the compressor this should seal it up as I
recovered about half a lb from the system and that was after last charge being
a year or 2 ago. It also did not appear to lose any vacuum after about 20-30
minutes so the leak must be small.

Re: [MBZ] The Hoax of Global Warming Revealed

2015-04-05 Thread Curt Raymond
You know, I was thinking just last week as I sat in a 90,000 ton cruise ship,
"I wonder if all the giant ships running around all the oceans of the world
contribute to the "rise in sea level". I mean they'd have to right? A 90,000
ton ship displaces 90,000 tons of water. If my grandmother was right with "A
pint is a pound the world around" then that ship displaces 180,000,000 pints of
water doesn't it? I might have missed a zero there but you get the idea.

Royal Caribbean has 22 ships and the one we were on was one of the smaller
Panamax (can travel through the Panama canal) models. The last cruise we were
on the ship was 150,000 tons and big oil tankers go well over 500,000 tons. To
my mind theres an awful lot of water being displaced around the world. Of
course theres an awful lot of water too...

Global warming discussions can be dangerous. Two fishermen in a bar got into an
argument about it that resulted in a near riot.
One said the sea had risen 2 inches because the high water mark on a post in
Crystal River had risen exactly 2 inches above the usual high water mark, and
therefore he believed in global warming. The other fisherman said the new high
water mark was due to all the boats from the marina making waves and that
global warming and rising seas was a lot of hooey.
After the riot was broken up someone called the government meteorologist in
Tampa and ask him about the 2 inch rise in water level. He called Washington,
the experts looked at the global warming program on their supercomputer, and
said the 2 inch rise in Crystal River was correct even though no one from the
government had ever actually measured it in Crystal River.
By then the fishermen had sobered up, so they shook hands, became friends
again, and their argument was never settled; just like the global warming
argument will never be settled.

Re: [MBZ] Thug driving Benz with pimp rims gets ventilated at FLAPS

2015-04-05 Thread G Mann
Actually, one of the most effective placements of a projectile to take the
fight out of the fight is a solid hit into the pelvis, ie center of mass,
low. The pelvis bone is the foundation of the body. If it is shattered, the
perp can not run and you regain control of the situation. However, in the
seconds you have in a real confrontation, a tightly aimed discharge is
simply not possible. Anyone who states, you should just shoot them in the
leg, has never been in a life threatening confrontation.

I challenge them to do a full on training scenario with it being video
recorded and watch themselves after the fight. In todays real world
scenarios, it's often more than one bad guy that is willing to do you harm
also.. so how do you pick, how do you deploy the force available, and how
do you survive, decisions must be made without hesitation..

Sounds like a good gig. Maybe I should try that if I ever move close

We always carried two large zip lock bags with dry sponges in them in our

stow them in your helmet bag after use... don't ask why I know this..

Rich,

Yes, the W166’s (Current version) have the latest designed Command system.
The MBUSA site says mine is only comparable with a iPhone 5, but I’ve read
with updated SW, it should work. Hope I’m not out of luck.

Re: [MBZ] Thug driving Benz with pimp rims gets ventilated at FLAPS

2015-04-05 Thread Scott Ritchey
One common saying in the firearms community goes like this:
Q: What does a person do after being shot with a handgun?
A: The same thing they were doing before they were shot.

The point is that (unlike TV and the movies) being shot by a handgun rarely
has immediate effect unless certain parts of the central nervous system
(spine/lower brain) are destroyed or the pelvis is broken. Even fatal shots
to the heart/lung area require significant blood loss to disable a person.
In a real struggle it's hard enough to shoot a perp at all without hitting a
bystander. So in the real world (to the extant you can) you aim center of
mass, or a bit higher, and continue shooting until the threat is stopped.
The idea of shooting to wound is a Hollywood fiction.

Is the a TSB, software upgrade or fix for this?

Re: [MBZ] Thug driving Benz with pimp rims gets ventilated at FLAPS

2015-04-05 Thread Greg Fiorentino
LE officers are trained to shoot to "stop an attack", which is most reliably
done by firing at center mass. This may result in the death of the
attacker, but stopping the fight is the goal, not the death of the attacker.
If the attacker can readily be stopped by less lethal means, such as OC
spray or a baton, then that is the preferred method.

If he's grabbing for the taser, and likely to get it from you because of
superior strength or position, then use of a firearm is justified. Doing
stupid things carries serious risks!

I want to know why these cops shoot to kill. Why not shoot the guy in the
arm or leg? If he's grabbing for a taser then he's probably not armed.

[MBZ] 350 SDL Tranny Issues

2015-04-05 Thread michaelangelo54
Hi all,

Trans in my 350SDL with 289K started acting funny this winter……

If it’s cold out, < 20F, If i drive off without a 5-10 minute warmup, the
trans goes back and forth on the 3-4 shift. If I drop it down into 3 for a
mile or two and then put it back into D, it’s shifts OK. Also, If have to
stop in that 1’st mile or so when cold, the trans slips. (3K revs and the car
barely moves)

Once it warms up, it shifts fine….hard acceleration from stop gives smooth
shifts; kick down works fine, too.

A few days ago, it was close to 60 out, and dead cold, it shifted fine.

Don’t know if it’s a B2 modulator (?), a vacuum issue or the trans is just on
it’s way out. Trans fluid and filter changed religiously every 45K. A Benz
mechanic told me that if it shifts fine when hot, it’s something external and
not the trans.

Any suggestions? Other than the usual “wait for the engine to self-destruct?

Thanks

In response to Andrews speculation. Yesterday, in excess of 280,000,000 gun
owners in America committed no illegal acts, shot no one, and went
peacefully about their business, many of those with their personal gun on
their person.

I do realize you live in the District of Corruption where the
Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms is violated with impunity,
however, the 50 States [a majority of them] do not violate that Right.

I speculate you could benefit greatly from attending a firearms training
class where you would be schooled in the responsible ownership and carry of
a firearm. I invite you respectfully to do that.

I would speculate the increase in cop shooting incidents is correlated with
the rise in gun ownership and the ease with which anyone can now purchase
some very lethal weaponry. Rather than ask questions, cops just shoot under
the assumption that the suspect is or could be heavily armed.

reached for it, I realized I was handing him my military ID, instead, and
pulled it back, laughing and saying, "Oh, I gave you the wrong card." As I
started to retrieve the proper license from my wallet, he was laughing and
saying, "Aw, you're alright; go ahead." (The military ID had come out by
force of habit, 'cause I hafta show it EVERY time I enter the air base, but
I hafta show my driving license VERY rarely.)

Atta Boy Wilton !

People who make bad choices reap the results. Fighting with a police
officer at a traffic stop is a bad choice... having drugs in your trunk is
a bad choice.. or dead body.. or running...
None of those choices are connected with your race, but your attitude.
Attacking a police officer, in the conduct of his duties, is a felony act
in, I believe, all 50 states. An officer may use deadly force, if
required,

to stop a felony act in progress, as most all those laws read..

On the other hand, I can't think of anyone in jail that was put there for
making good choices...

SUMMERS WITH RICHARD
By Wilton Strickland

I spent most of the summers of 1946, '47 and '48 with my oldest brother,
Richard, on a tobacco farm in Edgecombe County near Rocky Mount, NC. I
saved most of the money I earned helping him and his neighbors harvest
tobacco to buy a bicycle and school clothes. 'Never had anybody go shopping
for clothes with me after I turned 12. As usual, I was the trucker, in
charge of driving the mules pulling small trucks of tobacco from the fields
to the curing barns where a crew of adult women and teenage girls would
"loop" it onto sticks to facilitate hanging it in the barns for
curing/drying.
The women/girls seemed to take great pleasure in teasing me about how
"handsome" I was and which girl should be the first to kiss me. I have
since somewhat regretted "disappointing" all of them.
The oil-fired furnaces in the barns produced pieces of soft, black
carbon residue that was removed when the burners were cleaned. The carbon
was excellent for writing on the sides of the galvanized sheet steel-covered
barns. The girls and I, especially the girls, used the pieces of carbon to
write silly poems and draw cartoons and caricatures on the barns. Much of
it was about who was "in love with whom" on that particular day, and my name
was often involved.
(More than fifty years later, about 1999, I was driving past this farm
and noticed that one of the barns was still standing with the outer,
galvanized sheet metal ("tin") still in place and still unpainted. I
wondered if our graffiti were still there. I made my way to the barn, and
sure enough - there was our silly "artwork" just as we teenagers had left
it, including several caricatures of me that the girls had drawn! I regret
not having a camera with me that day; I went back with a camera several
months later and was very disappointed to find that the barn had been
demolished and the site cleared.)
On the mile or so path from the tobacco barns to the "back" fields, I
had to cross (ford) a small stream with the tobacco trucks. This was no
problem at all going to the field with an empty truck - I simply rode inside
the truck as the mule pulled it through the water. Crossing the stream with
a heavy truck full of tobacco, though, was quite another matter, indeed,
especially as it got later in the season and ruts on the stream bed got
deeper and more numerous. The truck would jostle or tilt violently back and
forth with me standing on the back of it trying to counter the truck's moves
and keep it upright. I sometimes was unable to keep the truck upright,
though, and would have to call for help at the top of my lungs. I always
felt guilty and embarrassed that I had "allowed" the truck to turn over.
The men in the field, however, never said a harsh word to me about it as we
worked together to right the truck and get the tobacco out of the water and
back into the truck.
Also, a part of my job as "trucker" was to deliver water and other
"refreshments" to the men in the field. I usually delivered water to them
in a half gallon Mason jar filled en route to the field from a well near the
house. For a special treat, I would go to a nearby store and purchase cold
soft drinks (usually Pepsi) and a snack (salted peanuts, nabs, moon pie,
etc.) for each primer and me. A favorite refreshment for me was to pour a
small bag of salted peanuts into a bottle of cold Pepsi in the field and
enjoy the drink and snack at the same time. During this time I also enjoyed
conversation with the men and listening as they tried to outdo each other
with their "tall tales" and some jokes that they thought I did not
understand. I would wait until I got out of their earshot to laugh,
sometimes, uncontrollably. I still remember and laugh at some of them
occasionally.
One day in the summer of '47, at 13, I was driving a mule pulling an
empty tobacco truck through a field of tobacco on a "shortcut" to the field
nearby where the men, including Richard, were pulling ("priming") tobacco.
Suddenly, the mule was startled by something between the rows of tobacco
nearby. I stopped the mule and left the truck to investigate. I found
several cardboard boxes filled with half-gallon jars of "moonshine"
(illegal - non-tax-paid) whiskey, maybe, a total of 12 to 15 gallons. I was
already aware of the misery caused by alcohol and was, as I still am,
adamantly opposed to its excessive consumption. I opened every jar and
poured the whiskey onto the ground. After pouring out all the whiskey, I
proceeded to the adjoining field, where I excitedly and proudly told the men
what I had found and what I had done with it. None of the four men showed
any reaction at all. If any of them knew about the whiskey, they exercised
remarkable restraint, especially, if one of them was the owner

Mopar rust penetrant.  It eats rust.  can also be sprayed in
cylinders to remove rust, but stay with it.  as soon as the engine
turns over, flush it out and oil the cylinders with non-detergent
oil.  If you leave it soak cylinders overnight, check the engine the
next morning, and flush as soon as it turns over freely.

Acetone/atf and PB also are good penetrants, but neither eats the rust.

Molykote BR2 gun grease for door checks, suspension on old cars with
grease fittings, general rust proofing, and lubing.  It works for
wheel bearings but weeks.  Molykote wheel bearing grease would work
better.  I put up with the weeping and I've never had a a wheel
bearing fail that I put  BR2 in.

It is very close to the special MB sunroof paste.  The official stuff
may have a higher molybdenum content.  Molykote undoubtedly has a
similar product, and I'd bet Molykote makes the official stuff.

BG additives for manual trans, diff, diesel fuel, Etc.  Maked the
petro products more slippery.  (may not be as noticeable with M1)

An officer may use deadly force, if required,
to stop a felony act in progress, as most all those laws read..

On the other hand, I can't think of anyone in jail that was put there for
making good choices...

including a pop tester setup for injectors.
I contacted Fred and asked if he would be a middle man for me and
hopefully buy  the pop tester offered and then ship to me since I was
afraid the vendor might think it was some sort of scam if I tried to do
it from here. It did not work out as the fellow had already agreed to
sell what I wanted to someone local but I do want to publicly thank Fred

He contacted the fellow on my behalf and was quite prepared to assist.
I do appreciate it.

Re: [MBZ] The Search Continues....

2015-04-05 Thread Curt Raymond
I've been doing that for years but for it to really work you need to have a
very cheap car and be able to do the work yourself. One major expense with a
mechanic and all your savings are gone. My '83 240D was my best effort to date
with about 25,000 miles for the cost of about $2,500 which includes oil
changes. That car was a jalopy though and I didn't dare take it any farther
than the 100 miles round trip to work and back. At the end it leaked/consumed
oil so bad that I was using CarQuest 15w40 conventional which was the cheapest
oil I could find and I was using the drain oil as makeup between oil changes.
While it did suffer an oil related failure that finally ended its life it was
failure of an oil cooler bypass hose not any problem with the oil itself.
In the end I'd bought the car for $400 (the second time I bought it) and sold
it for $200, plus I'd sold a bunch of parts for around another $100 so I came
out real good.
The Jetta is doing pretty well, I've put I think 25,000 miles on it with maybe
$4000 invested (which includes buying the car and both summer and winter tires
plus buying the second set of rims) if nothing big goes wrong I should be
approaching the '83 240D by the end of this year...

They stopped development on it recently as they are joining up with another
developer, but I'm still using it as it's been the best thing I've found for
the iPhone.

Find it in the App Store. I think it costs a couple of bucks.

He was a Gentle Giant who tried to get the cop's taser and use it on the

that on the cop. Plus, what he had done to that Benz was in itself
worthy of a lightning strike.

Stay tuned though, the NAN and NAACP are meeting in 2 hours to determine

Re: [MBZ] Ya Gotta Love It!

2015-04-05 Thread Dan Penoff
These have been around for a long time in industrial applications. They're
nothing more than an instrument that measures the thickness of a coating, in
this case, paint.

It just measures the thickness of the coating (paint) relative to the substrate
(steel or aluminum body panel) The consumer grade gauges don't work on
plastic. That's because they typically rely on using magnetism or eddy
currents to sense the thickness of the coating. To do this on plastic panels
you need an ultrasonic gauge.

The consumer grade gauges aren't super accurate, but more importantly, they
allow you to see the consistency of the paint thickness, which is really what
you need to know to tell if there's been bodywork.

Re: [MBZ] Ya Gotta Love It!

2015-04-05 Thread Dan Penoff
Sure. A must-have when looking at used cars:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pocket-Size-Digital-Paint-Coating-Thickness-Meter-0-1-Gauge-Sensor-Probe-80mil-/181429181260?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a3e059b4c

Or something like this.

It's a fantastic thing to have, as there is simply no way to dispute paint
thickness when trying to determine if a car has had bodywork done on it.
Magnets can't always reveal the thickness of Bondo, but a repaint or touch-up
will always yield a measurable difference in paint thickness. It also doesn't
matter if the panels are steel or aluminum, either.

Even production paint jobs will have variations, but what you're looking for is
a significant change in the fill or paint thickness in a given area. Since
shops will often blend or fill in, you can see the paint thickness get thinner
as you move away from a repaired area. On a production paint job the thickness
should be pretty consistent across a given area, if not the whole car.

You also want to check paint thickness in areas like door jambs and around
openings like the trunk as these areas will often have much less paint that
outside areas around them if there have been repairs.
