[MBZ] OT - A CAROLNA COUNTRY BOY REMMBERS - THE OUTHOUSE
Yep, another one: THE OUTHOUSE By Wilton Strickland A privy, toilet, or outhouse, a small wooden building sitting over a hole dug several feet deep at the rear of the back yard was used “as necessary.” I dug two of the holes in the ground for the privy - one as a young teenager, the other when I was 21. Each of the holes was about 4 feet by 4 feet in width and about 6 feet deep. Each time, I also moved the building to the new hole. The building had a wooden bench with an appropriate hole in it to receive “deposits.” Some of these privies had multiple holes - there were many “two-holers,” usually an adult hole and a child hole. Ours was always a conservative and more-modest “one-holer.” In lieu of toilet tissue, which we had only in later years, we used corncobs (too rough), newspaper (a bit slick) and pages from Sears catalogs (way too slick). (Many outhouses even had a wire rack to hold the Sears catalog.) Not only was the availability and use of appropriate “paper” somewhat worrisome, one also had to be on the lookout for black widow spiders and snakes. A stick was usually kept in a corner to wave around in the hole and under the bench to rid the area of spider webs and, hopefully, spiders. The best defense against such critters, though, was to perch or squat up on the bench above the hole while being careful to maintain good “aim.” Several days after I had installed bathroom fixtures, a kitchen sink, a water heater and an automatic washer for Mama in 1970, I stopped by to see her one afternoon. While there, she asked me to help her burn a pile of brush in the garden. The pile was near the now not-needed outhouse. I suddenly realized this was the perfect opportunity to do something I had wanted to do for many years - burn the outhouse! When I told Mama my plan, she hesitated and said, “Oh, no, I thought we’d save it.” I asked, “Save it for what?” She replied, “Oh, an emergency.” I quickly convinced her, though, that it was a symbol of and a reminder of a past hard life and sacrifices she had made for way too long, “Let’s burn it in celebration of not needing it any more.” We laughed and giggled as we pushed it onto the brush pile and set it ablaze. We watched it disappear in smoke and flame as we each toasted it with a glass of cold Pepsi - one of the most-fun parties Mama and I ever had. I wish Daddy could have celebrated the occasion with us. Re: [MBZ] Fw: $30 - $100 Back + Free Delivery = Happy Mowing! Husqvarna Sales Event Ends Soon
I think Huskys are made by American Yard Products (AYP), or were in the past. I have a 10-year-old Sears AYP mower (with BS 22 hp 2-cyl gas motor) which has been flawless. Other than blades and oil/filter, the only repair was replacing the cheap sun-rotted rear tires last year. The new tires were quite stiff compared to the old ones (more plys) and I needed to use one of those air cannons to seat the bead. I suspect neatly all domestic gas mowers are made by one of a very few companies (e.g. MTD, AYP. etc.). -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Craig via Mercedes Sent: Sunday, April 26, 2015 1:45 AM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: [MBZ] Fw: $30 - $100 Back + Free Delivery = Happy Mowing! But let us go back to the beginning, for this win was not a fluke on the spur of the moment, it was the result of weeks, even months, of preparation and planning. My enthusiasm for the Mille Miglia race goes back many years, among the reasons being the fact that it is permissible to carry a passenger, for this event is for all types of road-going cars, from family saloons to Grand Prix-type racing/sports cars, and when I had my first taste of the lure of the Mille Miglia as a competitor last year, with Abecassis in the H.W.M., I soon set about making plans for the 1955 event. Regular Motor Sport readers will remember that last year I enthused over a little private dice that Moss gave me in a Maserati, and at the time I mentioned to him my desire to run in the Mille Miglia again. Then in September, whilst in discussion with the American driver John Fitch, we came to the decision that the only way a non-Italian could win the Mille Miglia was by applying science. At the time he was hoping to be in the official Mercedes-Benz team for the event, and we had long talks about ways in which the driver could use a passenger as a mechanical brain, to remove the responsibility of learning the circuit. When it is realised that the race is over 1,000 miles of ordinary, unprepared Italian road, the only concession to racing being that all traffic is removed from the roads for the duration of the race, and the way through towns is lined with straw bales, it will be appreciated that the task of one man learning every corner, every swerve, gradient, hummock, brow and level-crossing is nigh impossible. Even the top Italian drivers, such as Taruffi, Maglioli, Castellotti, etc., only know sections of the route perfectly, and all the time they must concentrate on remembering what lies round the next corner, or over the next brow. During the last winter, as is well known, Moss joined the Mercedes-Benz team and the firm decided that it would not be possible for Fitch to drive for them in the Mille Miglia, though he would be in the team for Le Mans, so all our plans looked like being of no avail. Then, just before Christmas, a telephone call from Moss invited me to be his passenger in the Mille Miglia in a Mercedes-Benz 300SLR, an invitation which I promptly accepted, John Fitch having sportingly agreed that it would be a good thing for me to try out our plans for beating the Italians with Moss as driver. When I met Moss early in the new year to discuss the event I already had some definite plan of action. Over lunch it transpired that he had very similar plans, of using the passenger as a second brain to look after navigation, and when we pooled our accumulated knowledge and ideas a great deal of ground work was covered quickly. From four previous Mille Miglia races with Jaguars Moss had gathered together a good quantity of notes, about bumpy level-crossings, blind hill-brows, dangerous corners and so on, and as I knew certain sections of the course intimately, all this knowledge put down on paper amounted to about 25 per cent. of the circuit. Early in February Mercedes-Benz were ready to start practising, the first outing being in the nature of a test for the prototype 300SLR, and a description of the two laps we completed, including having an accident in which the car was smashed, appeared in the March MOTOR SPORT. While doing this testing I made copious notes, some of them rather like Chinese due to trying to write at 150 m.p.h., but when we stopped for lunch, or for the night, we spent the whole time discussing the roads we had covered and transcribing my notes. The things we concentrated on were places where we might break the car, such as very bumpy railway-crossings, sudden dips in the road, bad surfaces, tramlines and so on. Then we logged all the difficult corners, grading them as saucy ones, dodgy ones and very dangerous ones, having a hand sign to indicate each type. Then we logged slippery surfaces, using another hand sign, and as we went along Moss indicated his interpretation of the conditions, while I pin-pointed the place by a kilometre stone, plus or minus. Our task was eased greatly by the fact that there is a stone at every kilometre on Italian roads, and they

[MBZ] Testing glow plugs
'95 E300: all measured between 0.7 and 0.9 ohms, at the six-pin connector for the glow plug relay. However, the pre-glow light is telling me there is a problem. Roughly half the time it won't light during the pre-glow cycle and then comes on immediately after engine start, or it does light as normal but then after a minute of operation it will come one for a bit. Engine start is smooth, so the majority if not all of the plugs are working. I think I will build a current tester next, using a cheap dash-mount amp meter from FLAPS. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] List Mail
Yes, those you mention used to be here or on the predecessor lists. They are missed. Most folks that post have something to contribute. we all have different experiences and different cars. One example that always comes to mind is how Herr Booth led a charmed life and he never had a klima fail, while for a few years, every car I touched had a Klima that crapped out. We are lucky to have those you mentioned and fmiser and the east coast chowdahQ crew (curt, fred, dimitri the welding machine, and Dwight.) Jaime's insights into the world of new prastic MBs, and all the 'lectronic gizmos in them, as well as hands on knowledge of the handfinished MBs is extremely valuable. And of course, thanks to Kaleb and Dan for being listmom and list motherinlaw. Darren the coffee dude writes: Start a Google group :p Not no, but Oh Hell No. I was on the Yahoo Groups diesel MB group for a while. Butt loads of ignorance and disinformation there. You can learn more here by accident than there on purpose. There are pretty good forums elsewhere, (Mad Max Bumpo is list admin for one) but as far as email lists go, this is the one. Dave's List is probably good, but it's invite only, and I've never been invited. He is GSXR on one of the Benz forums. He is highly knowledgeable on older MB. Wish he was here, along with a few others... Mathieu Cama, John Berryman, to name a couple. We have resident experts here too, Jaime, Peter F., Dan P., Loren, to name a few. The depth of knowledge on a variety of subjects, on this list, is incredible. I, for one, am quite grateful to Kaleb, and also Dan P. for keeping this list alive not only after this last little fiasco, but also after the Dickarde server meltdown. Thank you, gentlemen.
