[MBZ] EV Charging sans a cord
ELECTRIC VEHICLES: Developers aim to ax cord for plug-in cars Published: Monday, June 1, 2015 Toyota Motor Corp. has teamed up with a Boston-based technology company to make plugging in electric cars a thing of the past. WiTricity, which comes out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, envisions a world where electric vehicles would park over charging pads located in lots or garages that would wirelessly transmit energy to a receiver on the undercarriage of the vehicle. I'll have it in my kitchen counter, my bedside table, probably my coffee table, CEO Alex Gruzen said. And throughout my day, I'll be casually topping off my devices with this quick 'energy snacking.' The same thing will happen in the automotive space, because when you park, it'll just charge, and you won't be thinking about it. WiTricity isn't the only company working on wireless charging for electric cars, but it is notable in that it has already raised $45 million, with Toyota as an early investor. The two companies also agreed on a licensing agreement in 2013, and Toyota has field-tested the equipment. The car company hopes to include the new technology as an option on its plug-in Prius, according to Gruzen. A Toyota spokeswoman declined to detail any specific plans. Honda Motor Co. is also using WiTricity to recharge a Fit EV at one of its smart homes near Tokyo. And other auto suppliers like Delphi Corp. have licensed WiTricity's technology. Proponents are hoping the simplicity of remote charging will win over skeptics who don't want to worry about physically plugging in their car everywhere they park. I grew up when phones had cords, Gruzen said. I still to this day think of it as a cordless phone. But to my kids, it's just a phone. They've never known phones with cords. So when we are talking about wireless charging, I think in five years it'll just be charging. It'll just be what you do (David R. I'll wager $1,000 that the investment made in this little enterprise, if you got to the full back story, gloves off, you would find some kind of tax write off, or green energy offset wrapped around the donation by Toyota.. perhaps, an import tax credit of some kind.. I assume that Mercedes did that on purpose and that it is normal for the vehicle. So, I doubt there is much to gain by going to a non-power steering setup on the vehicle and that there is something to lose - especially if one is going to drive it for hours at a time in a racing environment. I learned to drive on non power steering vehicles. My father normally did not go in for the frills. We had manual transmissions and power nothing. I have had a number of vehicles over the years without power steering. One of them was a 1968 Chevy pickup truck. It was ok at highway speeds but a real devil to park. Not so much due to the effort it took to turn the wheel so much as the number of turns required. The steering is slow compared to power and it is thus more difficult to put into a parking spot or to pull into the garage off of the street etc. In any event, I suspect that it will be as easy to repair the leaks in Clay's car as it will be to replace with a non power unit and thus suggested he just enjoy the power steering. A number of people have reported via oil analysis that Truck and Turbo is fine for VW PD engines. Mine is a 2004 and does not have the particulate burner that older oils will fill with ash, so I think it's OK. It is the only oil on the list at tdiclub that I can find around here, short of going to the dealer. I've used it for years in Mercedes diesels, I think it will be far better than the Speedy Oiler stuff my nephew was having put in. Re: [MBZ] Power steering
The point has been made that power steering doesn't do much at speed. I say take the pump out of the belt circuit, as an Experiment, and see how it drives. I suspect that once you get over 15 mph, you'll never know it is missing. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] EV Charging sans a cord
Yes, I think so - it might not be terribly heavy, but you have to have a receiving antenna/transformer coil in the car. My wirelessly charging electric toothbrush gets warm while on the charger - there are losses in this system that could be significant for the amount of current required to charge a car. try grounding each corner we had a Ford that had issues I put a new and extra ground on each corner of the car from body to the ground on each lamp no more issues but a bit quick and dirty. On May 30, 2015 2:38 PM, Craig via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: My driving to and from Albuquerque for class this summer has been complicated by turn signals not working when it is hot (they have worked just fine first thing in the morning when it is cool). I took the console apart, took out the flasher (which is electronic) and put Deoxit D100 contact cleaner on its socket pins and reinstalled. I then took the emergency flasher switch in the house and, with it mostly inside a Zip-Loc bag, disassembled it. It was dirty inside. I cleaned it up, put on Deoxit D100, reassembled it, and took it back to the car. The turn signals and emergency flasher functions seem more solid, but the real test will be when it's hot. I am going grocery shopping this afternoon (Shirley is unable since she fell and fractured her pelvis a month ago), so I should have a good test. -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Re: [MBZ] EV Charging sans a cord
It's OK... there is plenty of safe clean electrical power on our perfect grid, which has zero defects from being left unattended for 50 yrs.. and that free power comes from clean nuculear plants which I never see, so it's clean.. If I throw away a few million watts of power because I'm to lazy to plug in my Green Electric Car.. it's no big thing.. I'm way to Green to have to worry about things like that..
