Haven't several of you been complaining that more and more W123 parts are
becoming un-obtainium? That's why the swap could be a risky mistake. Better
swap it for a W140.

there are still enough 123s in junkyards. Even "overpriced" 123
parts are likely to be cheaper than 140 parts, and you'll need less
of em. If you get steel wheels, you don't need to clean and repaint
bundts.

I loved the maintenance simplicity/ease of my non-turbo 123 300TD. That
little wagon could haul a lot and it still had many modern features. The
ACC servo even worked most of the time. It sat un-driven for a couple years
before I bought it. For a few years I only drive it around town and worried
a lot about what it would do on the open road. But when I took it on the
interstate it ran great. For a 30-40 year-old design it was an amazing car.

[MBZ] Why cars go to auction WUZ: Stealer hires morons

2016-01-16 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
THIS is why cars go to auction.  Stealer monkeys can't/won't fix em;
just bleed the owner dry. Owner gets PO'd and trades for Detriot or
asian iron. Trade in stealer sends the car to auction.

Last wed there were TWO chrysler 300s which opened the RF window when
you turn the steering wheel. I drove one out of the auction line and
turned right; the window went down. Tried to put it up and the
steering wheel kept trying to put it down. Parked it and the same
routine. Eventually I got it to stay up long enough to get the key
off. I commented about it to the lane manager and she pointed to one
opposite it across the drive and said "That one does the same thing."

Memo to Dan: Swap for the 123. Today I noticed the files on my
computer. When I find things that are not in the book or explained
better (etc.) I name files as MB123... or MB124... etc. I bet I have
twice as many for 124 as for 123. 123s are simpler and about the
only thing I ever had to refer to "the book" for was the torque specs
when I rebuilt the OM616. I have nice paper engine and chassis
manuals, but they are virtually unused.

The airmatic system in Victor spit out errors after my indy
installed a fresh upper control arm on the W220. I had him take a
look and the fault codes steered him to the pump. Turned out the
pump was not the failure point. Left side showed 4mm, driver
side(repair) reported 33mm. System seemed to try to make it right,
but would just toss hands in the air and give up after a bit. Spit
out the error code and drop the offending corner. Indy said this is
a job for STEALERSHIP!

I wasted three hours at the dealer while they diagnosed. The web
scheduled appointment failed to show on their computer. Idiots.
They decided it was a sensor issue and would have the parts within
30 hours, so I went back mid-week. Wasted another three hours while
the parts went in, Service idiot was surprised to see me back. I
inquired as to MBCA discounts and was assured I would have that
taken into account. At the end of the visit he informs me that his
tech says my shop installed the wrong part. New part was not
identical to the old, and it should look just like the part on the
other side. WOW! Sounds like a huge mistake. Their "fix" was to
booger the computer to ignore adjusting the suspension and to just
have it produce the error each time I start the car. Make my indy
put the "proper" benz part as replacement, then go back for Stealer
to calibrate. I paid, but later saw no club discount.

My indy was pretty sure he had installed the correct part, but ...
things can happen. He orders up the part from an out of state
dealer (none available local) and has to move back the appointment.
I dropped the car off evening before and indy has the REAL part and
my old part. I am shown both and see that the new part is stouter,
but the mounting point has been machined to same thickness as
original part. Lemforder makes the part for Benz, with PN and star
cast in. Calipers confirm no variance at ounting point. Indy does
not want to destroy a perfectly fine part to install the exact same
part four weeks after installing it. Sounds reasonable, so I need
to figure out what the stealer did. We arrange to have a leak down
test on the system done in the morning, while I go over my records
on work done looking for support that Lemforder part was used.

The next day, I stop off at the shop to get part numbers and backing
docs just as the parts rep shows with the exact same part as was
installed on my car. Lemforder, exactly the same as Benz, just has
the PN and star ground off. WIth that all verifying my indy's story
and proving the Stealership wrong on their diagnosis, I head to the
Benz store. Service manager blows me off, the desk jockey I dealt
with is not there that morning, I will get a call on MLK day. I
told him I was unimpressed with the lack of knowledge shown by the
tech, the lies, and the excessive fee to fail to fix the issue. I
advise him I want a solution, no more stories.

In very preliminary discussions with the owner of a 1984 300D in

color this week. Engine replaced around 180k with a 120k engine

timing chain. They parked it at that time and then sold it to the
current owner. Lifetime Florida car, dealer maintained, full

I have no idea why anyone would want a 300SEL. Talk about a dog. I
have driven several. You have to rev the piss out of it to get it to move.

On 1/16/2016 8:03 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

and a round trip to Mobile. Otherwise it would be more like 7.5k. It
currently has 106k on the clock. It’s nice to drive, handles relatively well
and gets pretty good gas mileage considering the size - I typically average
over 20 mpg a tank in a 50-50 highway/city driving cycle.

I am terrified that something is going to break. I can relate this to the
paranoia over the W140 and how it was so “sophisticated” that it would cost a
fortune to repair and maintain. Of course that’s not the case, as the W140 is
fairly simple to maintain and the systems are nowhere near as complex as the
W220.

The W220 has a CANBUS system where everything, and I mean everything, talks
over it. There are critical choke points, called “SAMs” that act as the
network switches, for lack of a better description. If one of these SAMs
fails, and they do as the cars age, you’re screwed. It’s a unique part that’s
MB only, to the tune of a grand or more. Without it the car is scrap metal.
Then you have the air suspension, which, I’ll admit is nice, but problematic.
When it’s working it’s great, but if one strut/airbag goes out, again, the car
is pretty much flatbed material. A rebuilt aftermarket strut/airbag runs
around $600, and they’re supposed to be replaced in pairs. That’s a $1300 bill
as a DIY job, far more if you’re paying someone to do the work.

It’s stuff like this that makes me long for something simple, as even a W140 is
simple compared to these cars.

And lastly, as I’ve said before, this car has no soul. I can’t pick it out of
the parking lot with all the other Asian and domestic jellybeans. I enjoy
driving my car, even for utilitarian purposes, and one of the reasons I’ve
driven Mercedes besides the obvious is their uniqueness and panaché. You know
a W140 is a Mercedes - there’s nothing else on the road like it. Same for a
W123 or W126, or any other MB model made prior to 2000. While this isn’t a
major deal, it’s a nagging issue in the back of my mind.

I really like the S-class cars, regardless of vintage, so ideally I would like
to go to a W126 or W140. Diesel would be great, but it’s not absolute. My
bucket list car is a (go ahead, Kaleb, thrash me for it) W126 300SEL, which
isn’t the easiest thing to find.

What really hangs this whole thing up is that I have nothing to cover for me if
I sell. I would have to rent a car in the interim or scramble to find a
replacement, which is not the idea way to be looking for a car.

Whatever….

Dan

Whatever….

Dan

Andrew, can you support that statement? Can you name even one such person,
for example? Has this person (assuming you can name one) obtained
comparable government documentation, like an EBT card? The liberals claim
there is no voter fraud (without proof). So I'll claim there are no
legitimate voters without ID (also without proof).

If I quoted the CL prices around here you would laugh, as there is no way
anyone is getting them. eBay has cars in the $7k-$9k range, but I don’t see
these auctions closing. Around here they’re going in the $7k range, maybe on a
good day. I have toyed with the idea of listing it on eBay with no reserve and
cutting and running if it doesn’t make a decent price.

People are afraid of them because of the air suspension and because the earlier
models were such unbelievable nightmares due to their Chrysler genetics.

This car runs great and the only issue it has is the e-brake release cable
being bad. I haven’t been able to get up the goomph to lay on my back under
the dash for an hour to fix it. Otherwise, everything else works, and I have
added the factory hands free cell phone/Bluetooth integration and Voice Control.

[MBZ] Stealer hires morons

2016-01-16 Thread clay via Mercedes
The airmatic system in Victor spit out errors after my indy installed a fresh
upper control arm on the W220. I had him take a look and the fault codes
steered him to the pump. Turned out the pump was not the failure point. Left
side showed 4mm, driver side(repair) reported 33mm. System seemed to try to
make it right, but would just toss hands in the air and give up after a bit.
Spit out the error code and drop the offending corner. Indy said this is a job
for STEALERSHIP!

I wasted three hours at the dealer while they diagnosed. The web scheduled
appointment failed to show on their computer. Idiots. They decided it was a
sensor issue and would have the parts within 30 hours, so I went back mid-week.
Wasted another three hours while the parts went in, Service idiot was
surprised to see me back. I inquired as to MBCA discounts and was assured I
would have that taken into account. At the end of the visit he informs me that
his tech says my shop installed the wrong part. New part was not identical to
the old, and it should look just like the part on the other side. WOW! Sounds
like a huge mistake. Their "fix" was to booger the computer to ignore
adjusting the suspension and to just have it produce the error each time I
start the car. Make my indy put the "proper" benz part as replacement, then go
back for Stealer to calibrate. I paid, but later saw no club discount.

My indy was pretty sure he had installed the correct part, but ... things can
happen. He orders up the part from an out of state dealer (none available
local) and has to move back the appointment. I dropped the car off evening
before and indy has the REAL part and my old part. I am shown both and see
that the new part is stouter, but the mounting point has been machined to same
thickness as original part. Lemforder makes the part for Benz, with PN and
star cast in. Calipers confirm no variance at mounting point. Indy does not
want to destroy a perfectly fine part to install the exact same part four weeks
after installing it. Sounds reasonable, so I need to figure out what the
stealer did. We arrange to have a leak down test on the system done in the
morning, while I go over my records on work done looking for support that
Lemforder part was used.

The next day, I stop off at the shop to get part numbers and backing docs just
as the parts rep shows with the exact same part as was installed on my car.
Lemforder, exactly the same as Benz, just has the PN and star ground off. WIth
that all verifying my indy's story and proving the Stealership wrong on their
diagnosis, I head to the Benz store. Service manager blows me off, the desk
jockey I dealt with is not there that morning, I will get a call on MLK day. I
told him I was unimpressed with the lack of knowledge shown by the tech, the
lies, and the excessive fee to fail to fix the issue. I advise him I want a
solution, no more stories.

[MBZ] 99 e320 D still sitting

2016-01-16 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
The shop next to my CrossFit gym still has that 99 e320 diesel sitting. I
talked to the guy a couple of months ago he wanted 1700 for it. Lost a
little interest. I talk to him again and now he'll take 1200. Ran the
carfax it's been maintained regularly. I finally got him to tell me the
reason the lady brought it in was it was leaking fuel . Everything I've
read about the 606 engines is that the injector pumps need to have the
o-rings replaced periodically. Most everything I read said those injection
pumps don't fail. The car has got 275000 miles on it. The car is in really
good shape. I just don't know of anything else that could be historically
lurking on one of those at that mileage. I reckon you guys would have
pounced on this by now?

Why? What do you think the W220 is worth? The market for them around here is
as bad as the R129 market.

Trade me a nice W126 diesel if you’ve got one, or a W140.

Engine replaced around 180k with a 120k engine from a 1985 300D due to the
previous (original owner) breaking a timing chain. They parked it at that time
and then sold it to the current owner. Lifetime Florida car, dealer

Re: [MBZ] Cars/Coffee

2016-01-16 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Corvair Greenbriar was the first 'merkun van. Copied after the VW
transporter which also came in many configurations from van to pickup
to crewcab pickup.

Frod countered in 1962 with the falcon van. Friend of mine had a 62
falcon van named Butch. Butch survived until 2008, when he got
crushed. Another fried of mine had a 64 "Mercury" van. It was the
canik version of the falcon van, like the Dogdr pickups of the era
were labelled "Fargo in the GWN.

Dogde brought out the Sportsman van in 1966 or there abouts. They
were late to the van game. Shoverlet had a "normal" van to counter
the Falcon van by 1966 when Ralphie was beating the death knell of
the corvair.

First van I drove was a 66 shovey named "Fred" Fred took a group of
4 HS friends on the "Great Trip to Canada" the summer after I got out
of HS. The second van was a 68 Dodge Sportsman. The third was a
shovey 68 stretched van. The first van I owned was a 66 frod with a
240 CI truck engine. It was sold in 1988 after about 12 years.

In 1968, frod introduced a bigger, wider van and the van size grew
dramatically, and the fuel consumption went way up. This trend
continued to the present time with the long and tall Sprinter vans.

The growth of the van sizes laid the groundwork for a smaller, more
economical van. Dogde introduced the "Minivan" in 1983. Iococca had
presented the concept to frod in 1974, but frod rejected the idea.
Since then there have been 2 segments, the van and the minivan, but
from a historical perspective, the segments should be named the van
and the overgrown van, maxivan or the term I used in the 70s, the
fatvan.

Came in van as well as pickup.

Heres an odd one:
http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/5405218855.html

After looking at it carefully, I figure its a grey market car with swapped
out seats and what appears to be an aftermarket turbo on a NA engine. I've
heard that such kits exist, but have never actually seen one.

Certainly doesn't qualify for "100% original" but is interesting anyway.

Jaime

Before MB came out with the turbodiesels, there were 2 companies
making turbo kits for MB in the USA, starting with the 220D. I often
thought about putting a turbo on my 200D, but never did because of
cost and reliability concerns. Much better to start with an engine
designed for turbo.

Three things I always wanted in the 200D: A turbo or an extra cyl; a
5 speed, and a sunroof.

When the 240D and 300D NA came out, the turbo kits were available
within a few months. Someplace in the old Star magazines from that
period, I would have ads for at least one of the turbo kit companies,
and there was at least one review with photos. I don't remember one
with this little plumbing to the intake.

In the rear photo, it looks like the rear bumper is yuro, (RTW) which
would lend credence to Jaime's theory.

Perhaps I should offer him my 85 300CD... I wonder how desperate he is!

[MBZ] 300D with aftermarket turbo

2016-01-16 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Heres an odd one:
http://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/5405218855.html

After looking at it carefully, I figure its a grey market car with swapped
out seats and what appears to be an aftermarket turbo on a NA engine. I've
heard that such kits exist, but have never actually seen one.

Certainly doesn't qualify for "100% original" but is interesting anyway.
