Re: [MBZ] From bad to worse to nightmare

2016-02-07 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
I pulled my 98 e300 in the shop yesterday for
what was supposed to be a simple belt shock
replacment. I knew the hole was stripped out so
I already had the proper size helicoil on hand.
I drilled out the hole, tapped it and inserted
the helicoil. Put it all back together and after
running a few minutes the damn shock popped of
the rubber mounting. This was a stabilus from
autohaus az but not the dealer part which j
guess is supposed to be better even though it is
made by stabilus. So I took the bolt back out
and the helicoil came out with the bolt. So I
drilled it again, tapped and put new coil in.
For some reason bolt was somewhat hard to turn
then snapped off all the sudden flush with the
head. Great. So I pull the radiator. Spend all
morning drilling on the bolt. At one point broke
off a drill bit in the hole but managed to get
it out. Finally get it drilled out enough to
then drill the final hole size for the helicoil
tap. Do that. Install another coil and for some
reason even though the hole was drilled and
tapped and the coil is the right size the bolt
will not thread in, it's like the hole is just
slightly too small. So I pull the coil out,
drilled again, tapped again, ran it down and all
the sudden the tap breaks! When it does the only
thing I can figure is the other price shot off
the wrench and the punctured the condenser, I
start rapidly losing the entire ac charge. So at
this point the car is screwed. Now needs a new
condenser also. How the heck am I going to get
this hardened tap out of the hole? There is
another slightly smaller hole right next to the
shock hole, I wonder if I can just bolt it to
that hole? I am concerned with it rattling
though since the bolt is slightly smaller. This
is a nightmare. There is nothing further I can
do with this car at the moment until I figure
out how to extract this tap and get a new
condenser here. I guess I should now start on
the glow plug project for my 97 but I suspect
it's got dorm fuel leaks that need to be
replaced while its apart and I don't have the
parts for it.

Huh! So much for what I thought I knew. *smiles*

I think the series plugs use a 50 A fuse, but now I'm picking

Personally, I would convert it to parallel with a button on

For parallel-but-fit-a-hole-for-series glowplugs:

Mercedes part number 0-250-201-044

or Bosch number FGK2

But those plugs are more expensive and much less common. The
bushings would be a one-time expense.

Either way, the parallel plugs put a lot more heat into the
engine and so replacing the series plugs is a worthwhile
upgrade.

What other test can be used? I didn't want to use jumper cables to
apply
power to just one plug at a time, because I was afraid I'd burn them
up,

assuming each is meant to power up with just 1/4 of 12 volts (series
circuit).

Series GP's are rated to work on about 1V each. They were
designed, so far as I can tell, for 6V 6-cylinder engines of
yore, and they never changed. They just use a dropping
resistor (or several) to take up the slack. In the case of
my 115, for example, the 12V slack is taken up by the in-dash
glow plug, and several 'toaster rack' wires. If that lost
heat could be captured in the intake manifold, for example,
we'd find the series system a lot more palatable.

For the record, my series 115 system is working great.
It always has.

Re: [MBZ] 77 240D glow system woe

2016-02-07 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
You've already diagnosed it to be ahead of the fuse. If the fuse
didn't blow, and since you've tested the plugs and there is no short
to ground, you can take a jumper cable to the bat side of the fuse to
light off the engine.

The only other diagnosis is to pull the plug from the relay and
verify it was 12V into it when the key in the glow position, and 0 V
in the off position.

Then for added security, you can verify the wire from the relay to
the fuse has continuity. It is possible if rubbed through at the
firewall and burned through.

Jaime,

We tested the plugs with a cheap-o multi-meter, which showed that all had
about the same resistance of about 0.5 ohms.

If one or more has gone bad, would that cause a total lack of voltage to
the fuse on the firewall? I can see if one became an open circuit, all the
plugs would not get power, and if one plug shorted out, the fuse would blow.

What other test can be used? I didn't want to use jumper cables to apply
power to just one plug at a time, because I was afraid I'd burn them up,
assuming each is meant to power up with just 1/4 of 12 volts (series
circuit).

I found an old posting from Marshall Booth that I have preserved on the
MBCA forum, which is the factory trouble-shooting steps for 1975-76 300D,
and that shows a thermo-time switch in the circuit.

See post #2 here:
http://www.mbca.org/forum/how-repair-maintain-your-mercedes-benz

According to that document, a no-voltage condition points to the relay.

It is not clear to me that a burned out lamp in the instrument panel would
cause total failure of the system or not.

Dunno. I'll have to ask. Probably 10¢ on the
dollar compared to the new one, or less. I'd
guess that 15-$20 would get one to your door.
Probably 30-35 for a pair if I can find a pair.

What would the price be, if they have one? For
the right price, would be nice to get a spare
that can be tried and tinkered with.

Re: [MBZ] 77 240D glow system woe

2016-02-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes

It was exactly what happened that I was so careful to avoiding
happening! Anyway I will drive the 140 diesel for a few days until I
can figure out the next thing to try. I still think I might try just
using that unused adjoining hole in the head.

On 2/7/2016 1:58 PM, Curly McLain via Mercedes wrote:
I pulled my 98 e300 in the shop yesterday for what was supposed to be
a simple belt shock replacment. I knew the hole was stripped out so I
already had the proper size helicoil on hand. I drilled out the hole,
tapped it and inserted the helicoil. Put it all back together and
after running a few minutes the damn shock popped of the rubber
mounting. This was a stabilus from autohaus az but not the dealer
part which j guess is supposed to be better even though it is made by
stabilus. So I took the bolt back out and the helicoil came out with
the bolt. So I drilled it again, tapped and put new coil in. For some
reason bolt was somewhat hard to turn then snapped off all the sudden
flush with the head. Great. So I pull the radiator. Spend all morning
drilling on the bolt. At one point broke off a drill bit in the hole
but managed to get it out. Finally get it drilled out enough to then
drill the final hole size for the helicoil tap. Do that. Install
another coil and for some reason even though the hole was drilled and
tapped and the coil is the right size the bolt will not thread in,
it's like the hole is just slightly too small. So I pull the coil
out, drilled again, tapped again, ran it down and all the sudden the
tap breaks! When it does the only thing I can figure is the other
price shot off the wrench and the punctured the condenser, I start
rapidly losing the entire ac charge. So at this point the car is
screwed. Now needs a new condenser also. How the heck am I going to
get this hardened tap out of the hole? There is another slightly
smaller hole right next to the shock hole, I wonder if I can just
bolt it to that hole? I am concerned with it rattling though since
the bolt is slightly smaller. This is a nightmare. There is nothing
further I can do with this car at the moment until I figure out how
to extract this tap and get a new condenser here. I guess I should
now start on the glow plug project for my 97 but I suspect it's got
dorm fuel leaks that need to be replaced while its apart and I don't
have the parts for it.

Someone (Kleb?) already posted that you can just do the pencil GP
conversion with the same relay.

Kent wants $90 for the 4 GPs and the wires. A used 81+ relay is
generally under $100 Last one I bought new was maybe $130, so probably

Someone (Kleb?) already posted that you can just do the pencil GP
conversion with the same relay.

Kent wants $90 for the 4 GPs and the wires. A used 81+ relay is
generally under $100 Last one I bought new was maybe $130, so probably
$150+ now.

Well as it turns out they do have tap extractors which are basically
fingers of hardened steel that fit into the flutes of the tap, then you
slide down the chuck on the tool to sort of lock it then back it out.
They are not cheap though. If all else fails I am probably going to try
using the hole next to it that all 603/606s seem to have.

I told the buyer that’s where I would meet them.

[MBZ] From bad to worse to nightmare

2016-02-07 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I pulled my 98 e300 in the shop yesterday for what was supposed to be a simple
belt shock replacment. I knew the hole was stripped out so I already had the
proper size helicoil on hand. I drilled out the hole, tapped it and inserted
the helicoil. Put it all back together and after running a few minutes the damn
shock popped of the rubber mounting. This was a stabilus from autohaus az but
not the dealer part which j guess is supposed to be better even though it is
made by stabilus. So I took the bolt back out and the helicoil came out with
the bolt. So I drilled it again, tapped and put new coil in. For some reason
bolt was somewhat hard to turn then snapped off all the sudden flush with the
head. Great. So I pull the radiator. Spend all morning drilling on the bolt. At
one point broke off a drill bit in the hole but managed to get it out. Finally
get it drilled out enough to then drill the final hole size for the helicoil
tap. Do that. Install another coil and for some reason even though the hole was
drilled and tapped and the coil is the right size the bolt will not thread in,
it's like the hole is just slightly too small. So I pull the coil out, drilled
again, tapped again, ran it down and all the sudden the tap breaks! When it
does the only thing I can figure is the other price shot off the wrench and the
punctured the condenser, I start rapidly losing the entire ac charge. So at
this point the car is screwed. Now needs a new condenser also. How the heck am
I going to get this hardened tap out of the hole? There is another slightly
smaller hole right next to the shock hole, I wonder if I can just bolt it to
that hole? I am concerned with it rattling though since the bolt is slightly
smaller. This is a nightmare. There is nothing further I can do with this car
at the moment until I figure out how to extract this tap and get a new
condenser here. I guess I should now start on the glow plug project for my 97
but I suspect it's got dorm fuel leaks that need to be replaced while its apart
and I don't have the parts for it.

The pencil plug upgrade kit still uses the existing under dash glow
timer/relay, at least it did when I did my TD some years back. Maybe there
is something new now? Another route would be to convert to the inside
ender-mounted relay used on the later models; should be available cheap
used.

By the way, my TD started and ran much better with the pencil plugs. As
mentioned earlier, pencil-style plugs are available that screw into the
old-style head.

Re: [MBZ] OT What's on?

2016-02-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I really enjoy Downton Abbey, Father Brown, Doc Martin, and some other show
I think it's called the Dr. Grey Mysteries or something like that. Those
are about the only shows I watch with any regularity, which is to say maybe
once every couple / three weeks.

My 1990 350SDL had 280K+ miles when I sold it last year..and
it's still being used as a daily driver. However I did just check
and it's not for sale on CL or eBay.

Wife now has a CPO 2011 Bluetek ML, now with 60K, just in the shop
for warranty workcam sensor, oil cooler and timing chain. Also
fuel filter and trans service...my nickel.

Now I know this car will not be as reliable or as cheap to maintain
as my SDL, but what's the net wisdom on this one?

Re: [MBZ] OT What's on?

2016-02-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The wife is a total British detective/mystery program maniac.

Right now there is a set of Poirot(?) DVDs on the TV stand she’s going through.
I rarely watch TV, but when I want to DVR something it always seems like I’m
running up against one of her recordings.

Father Brown is pretty good. Never seen Doc Martin. I thought that was a
shoe?

I got caught up with “Call the Midwife” or whatever that was. Well written,
but better yet, covered a part of British history I was totally unfamiliar
with, the late 1950s. I found the cultural and societal shifts that were
taking place quite interesting, and something I had no former knowledge of.
The “Bletchley Circle” program that had the women who had worked as code
breakers during WWII was pretty interesting from that aspect as well. Didn’t
watch it all, but saw some of the episodes.

Dan “would you like a spot ‘o tea?"

The resistance is so low that a milliohm meter is the only
effectively measure the resistance. But 0.5 ohm means none
of them are open. :)

No. They could all fail and there would still be supply power.

You are correct. 12 V to one series style plug will cause it
to burn out _very_ fast.

If you can bypass or short past the thermo-timer, you could
use jumper cables to apply power to the beginning of the
chain (first plug) and test them all.

Power to the first one, ground the last one - that should
energize all the plugs safely. Just remember the "toaster"
wires between the plugs get hot!

With power applied, you can use a volt meter with one lead on
ground an the other measure the voltage at each plug. 12 V
at the first one, 9 at the second, 6 at the third, and 3 at
the last one with the ground strap or wire to the thermo-switch.

> According to that document, a no-voltage condition points
> to the relay.

If there is no voltage at the first plug, then something is
interrupting the supply. Open fuse, bad switch or relay,
mouse chewed wire, etc.

> It is not clear to me that a burned out lamp in the
> instrument panel would cause total failure of the system or
> not.

For the systems with a relay, the lamp is just an indicator
(best I can tell) and has no effect on the function of the plugs.

Thanks Philip and all, Eric has tested for power at the appropriate pins of

1993, I believe. Starting in 1994 the model numbering system changed and it

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes 400SEL Long Body Very Rare

2016-02-07 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Nice color. At least it is not black.

almost cheep enough to get me interested in a 140, but then there is
the self destructing wiring. I'll pass.

Too bad the Deutsches goobermnt goobered up the wiring for so many years.

But the goobermnt goobers did what goobermnt goobers do. Make
problems where none existed.
