Re: [MBZ] Mercedes 400SEL Long Body Very Rare

2016-03-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
My indy has gotten me to front his cars for him. The newest victim is a 94
C280 that is loaded. Emerald green with grey leather. It has all records
from new, even the window sticker. This thing has stuff my E300D did not, and
the W220 does. Small car, but the 6 cyl is a blast. Owner forced me to take
it home and drive it hard so I could feel just how good it was. It is
impressive. KBB has it at $2500, NADA says $5800. I figure with winter and
summer wheels, 200K miles, all service done by dealer since new and everything
works as it should, $4k is a reasonable price. As for investment or value
increase.. maybe it has hit floor and will now rise

Re: [MBZ] Battery prices?

2016-03-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
Interstate group 49 are around $190 wholesale around me. There was discussion
about who was providing the battery for the 77 SL, as seller used his shop
battery and was not going to purchase a new one to put in the car he is
selling. His cost is $190 from the interwebs. I think I am sourcing the
battery from my collection of group 49s sitting around waiting to be used or
dropped off at FLAPS

Re: [MBZ] POS S430

2016-03-29 Thread clay via Mercedes
A visit to the car doctor resulted in a manageable labor charge. Stupid turd
of a car. Tech took the whole front apart to get at a garbage plastic $8 thing
that should have been metal. Connector to the heater had spring a pin hole
leak that was piddling on the exhaust pipe making steam.

I spent the day at the shop buffing the project SL I am helping sell. That
prompted the owner to ask what it would be worth running. Twice what I had it
on CL for was my response. About an hour later, he gets the tech to put a tow
strap on it and moves it so I can better attack it with the random orbital
buffer. After I pause for lunch he has a battery put in it, puts fresh fuel,
and gets the thing running. With the new photos, I had to edit the listing.
Some guy could have had a pretty good car for pocket change, pop a fresh
battery and fuel in the tank and had a running car. You snooze, you lose.

We've been happy with the 2012 Passat TDI - now that the squirrels aren't
eating the wiring anymore (thanks to the pellet gun). the seats are not as
comfy as the MBs were, but otherwise it's an OK car - the fuel economy is
great. It feels more solid than the smaller VWs, but not as solid as an MB.
At half the cost new, I expect it to last half as long - but that will be
long enough for us.

Interesting story when I first started working at the Lab in Los Alamos:

I happened to be working in a part of the Lab (TA-53, in case you are
interested) that was set up for controlled public access -- they have
a half-mile-long 800 MeV accelerator that is used to irradiate various
target areas in three experimental user facilities. People throughout
the world bring experiments there to be bombarded by protons, electrons,
or neutrons (they have some real neat neutron diffractometry setups
there).

One of the results of all of the bombardment of things people have
brought is that the metal parts are "activated", that is, made
temporarily radioactive. Those who own the experiments have to wait
until the activation decays. Then, their experimental apparatus has
to be cleared for release by a Radiation Control Technician before
they can take it home.

Since the consequences of radioactive things being taken out of the Lab
are severe, they have many sophisticated radiation detectors near the
entrance guard shack monitoring the only road out of the facility.

This particular day, Shirley, who had a "spouse pass" to be able to come
onto the facility, had had some sort of medical test in Santa Fe and came
to pick me up from work that evening. Everything went as normal. Shirley
drove in, parked near the building, and waited for me to come out and
drive us home.

Since it was after hours, I stopped by the exit gate, punched the exit
button on the pylon in the middle of the road and waited for the gate to
open. I drove though the gate and all of a sudden, FLASHING LIGHTS, HORNS,
SIRENS!!! Since there was no guard at that time of day, I made a U-turn
around the guard shack and picked up the phone by the gate that rang in
the control area (which was immediately informed of an alarm condition).

The fellow who answered and I talked for awhile. Although I wasn't sure,
I suspected the test Shirley had had was a nuclear medicine test. I
suggested to him that I swipe my badge and drive back in a short ways,
turn around, let Shirley out, and drive the car out, while Shirley would
follow on foot. He thought that was a reasonable idea, and so that's what
we did.

I repeated the exit process with the car. Nothing happened (that was a
relief, our car wasn't contaminated). Shirley then walked up to the exit
button pylon and pushed the button. She got almost all the way out of the
facility when all of a sudden, FLASHING LIGHTS, HORNS, SIRENS!!!

I picked up the phone again and told the fellow what had happened, that
my wife had set off the alarm herself and that the medical test she had
had that day was most likely a nuclear medicine test. He said it was OK
and let us depart for home.

Re: [MBZ] VW

2016-03-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
We've got an '05 Golf TDI, I've been very happy with it. I think the previous
owners got cheated when somebody "rebuilt" the transmission and maybe forgot to
put oil in it or something. My VW Guru was shocked that it would need one at
150,000 miles.
Its peppy and gets great mileage, feels not as solid as an MB but better than
the equivalent asian or US iron.

I bought a 2004 Golf TDI from my nephew, it's a great car.  It will be
better when I get rid of the 18" rubber band tires, but so far it's
great for driving to and from work.  It also doesn't need a ton of
work like my MBs

Not the same quality and nowhere near as comfortable on long trips,
but very nice.

Never got to play with a military version, just camping trips as a kid and
messing about with my current lamp, showing its operation to SWMBO and little
SWMBO.

When trying to enjoy the great outdoors, less noise is better.

I saw a "new" in the box Aladdin go for about fifty dollars on EBay, I should
have bid on it.  Plain glass base, the all brass versions look beautiful.

Thanks ! ... nice to have the straight skinny on where they are now made.

Hope they go back to the way they were made for Aladdin for the past 60
years.. the old mantles gave excellent service, if handled correctly. and
gave excellent light.

A properly trimmed Aladdin lamp will make as much light as a 60 watt bulb,
with a focusing reflector, it's quite adequate.

A C-141 cargo plane was preparing for departure from Thule Air Base in
Greenland, and they were waiting for the truck to arrive to pump out the
aircraft's sewage holding tanks.

The Aircraft Commander was in a hurry, the truck was late arriving, and
the Airman performing the job was extremely slow in getting the tank
pumped out.

When the commander berated the Airman for his slowness and promised
punishment, the Airman responded, "Sir, I have no stripes, it is 20 below
zero, I'm stationed in Thule, and I am pumping sewage out of airplanes,
Just what are you going to do to punish me?"

Adding kerosene is much faster than a recharge cycle, and lower
tech, and these lamps can sit 'charged' and ready for immediate
use for two years without ongoing maintenance. (As we have done.)
They also throw out a fair amount of heat, which is usually
welcome. The power only fails here in the winter, it seems.

We have two Aladdins, both are wood/brass with a ship sketch
on the shade. Nice decor when not in use. Bright enough to
read by comfortably when in use, usually touted as being about
equivalent to a 60W lamp.

Yes, they do take some amount of maintenance when in use, but
it's not hard. Use the wick trimmer once in awhile, and keep an
eye on the flame level. (Too high and the mantle and shade soot
up.) Fill it daily.

With a fire in the stove, the pendulum clock ticking away, and
the Aladdin, it's a nice winter's eve reading and talking in
our living room when the power goes out. Hot drinks via a
kettle on the stove. Fairly normal except for no TV. (The
bathroom situation is a bit more medieval, of course.)

I saw a "new" in the box Aladdin go for about fifty dollars on EBay, I should

Lumens is a much more honest thing since it's directional. Coleman always took
major liberties with candlepower. I wonder what the lumen output of the Aladdin
is? Based on some LED headlamp outputs I'd guess the Aladdin is sub-100.

The Amazon ad says 784 lumens. That's 62.4 candle power.
