Re: [MBZ] THIS ONE WEIRD TRICK LITERALLY CHANGED MY LIFE!

2016-06-08 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We have six recessed floodlight fixtures to light the kitchen, and one of the
first things I did when we moved in was replace the R40(?) incandescents with
LED lamps. At the time it was about $15/lamp, but money well spent as far as
replacements and heat.

It's been nearly five years and they're all still going strong. I figure
they've paid for themselves in electricity savings alone over that time. Due
to their location they are on several hours a day, so they get a good workout.

Re: [MBZ] Don't these things usually sell for a lot more than this?

2016-06-08 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
The Law Offices of Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe were in a third floor office
overlooking Hahvahd Squayuh, the building at one point was renovated and
they put the window back that had the lettering on it. It's right next
to where the T station is. Those radio idiots say they set it up but it
was there for a long time before they got going. (They, BTW, were
a**holes too at their shop)

There used to be a bar down the street called 33 Dunster St where you
could get cheap beer, but you had to keep an eye on it so the
cockroaches wouldn't carry it away. It got bought and renovated into
the John Harvard Brew Pub, which is (was) pretty good but none of the
"charm" remained. The whole area got totally yuppified.

The fabric buildings are becoming very popular.  Thye are popping up all
over the country.  For a garage, shop, storage etc, they are great.
People build concrete or T&G treated lumber walls, then put the building
on top.  They are warmer in the winter, lighter inside to work in the
daytime, and often cooler in the summer than alternatives.  They can be
made rodent proof and bug proof.  Many are being used for grain storage.

2016-06-08 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Hope you are ok G Mann.

I put one camera in my car and one I my wife's right after Wilton accident.
She has already been rear ended once (second time since that car was new in
Jan 2015). Unfortunately, she had unplugged the camera to keep her phone
charged, which is actually more important due to her job, so I don't blame
her. But I will have to find a way to hard wire the camera.

Fortunately I insist that she keep a double ball drawbar in the hitch
receiver at all times, which seems to fold the offending vehicle nicely up
the middle while slowing it down enough to not contact the Touareg much.
One time it was a 4runner and one time a kia, both at about 25 MPH while
she was stopped at an intersection waiting for cars in front of her. Both
times young femae drivers. Clearly people are texting and driving a lot.
Looking for a hitch for the 124 wagon now.

Video from Black Box dash camera from 5 days ago when I got hit in the rear
while driving at the speed limit. Car that hit me is certainly a total..
entire front crush area "crushed" .. my car may be repairable, the process
has only started.. but it and I are hurt... I left the scene in an
ambulance, the car on a flatbed.

The camera only gives a "forward view" of the crash.. I had made the
decision to purchase a second camera for the rear.. just had not ordered
it.. best plans of mice and men. I would love to have had a rear view video
of the crash.. I suspect driver was on a cell phone or distracted..

On impact the car was driven 800+ feet, across oncoming traffic into a
block wall.. First 45 seconds of the video cover all that happened.. it
runs 2min 16 sec, before I shut the camera off.

I think the camera just paid for it's self.. Thought I would try to "share
the experience" .. Special thanks to Wilton.. since your crash event
triggered my decision to install the camera. Like you, it could have gone
so much worse, for example, if there had been oncoming traffic.. I missed
the next opposing car by about 12 seconds.. Likely it would have been fatal
for most, in that case.. with head on.

Also I've had a couple trucks where the hitch got rusted to the

Re: [MBZ] Dash camera crash video

2016-06-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Rust?... What is rust? ... If you look at the sky condition in the video..
that's what it looks like here for 360 days out of the year... ;)) .08
inches of rain last month.. it was a "wet month"... haha..

Trailer hitch ball sticking out the back of a vehicle is almost required
here.. If you bark your shin on one.. you will remember next time to give
some space to other vehicles.. On closer inspection of the wreck damage,
looks like the hitch mount and sturdy receiver hitch with ball took the
hit, returned major damage to the attacking car and helped reduce the sheet
metal damage.

If you look on the site that sells the Black Box cameras, there is a
"people who bought this also bought" list below it.. One of those items is
a 12V to 5V hard wire power supply, and beside that is a listing for wiring
connectors to tap into your fuse box for a "key on" power. The power supply
has a generous 15 ft power cord. Cost is less than $10. I bought one.. have
not yet installed it.. for now, a duplex power plug for the lighter port
has been working.

After this event.. a dedicated rear facing camera is on my list.. as is an
on board digital hard drive, in a locked compartment.

Off to talk to lawyers and doctors... and body shops.. and the police..
busy work..

Is that an expansion valve or an orifice tube/accumulator system? If it's an
orifice tube (a common system these days, cycles the clutch by low side
pressure) you will need to flush the whole system out if the screen is plugged,
replace the trashed compressor (where all the crap came from) and put a filter
in the high side line so it won't clog up again.

Probably need a filter in the low side line as well since it's impossible to
flush all the crud out of a multi-tube type evaporator
-- no filter, you trash a new compressor right away and end up where you
started.

This is why my Volvo didn't have AC, too hard to find a compressor for it.

How would you hook up a cam to a hard drive? They all use SD cards and
just keep recording over and over. I put a 32GB in mine, that is good
for like 4 hours of vid I think it said. You could get a Raspi and
camera (I think the new boards might support 2 cams now so you could do
front and back, and even hook up a little display) and use a USB HDD or
SSD to record, that would work, and would be pretty cheap to set up.

That sounds like quite a reasonable price.
Installation labor shouldn't be too hard to do yourself, then take it to an AC

spent money putting in a whole new exhaust. I wish he would have spent the
money on the a/c.  It sits a lot, but whenever I need it, it starts right up no
problem.  It's a dependable old work truck.

What we need is 360 degree visibility (so four cameras, realistically) a
video muxing unit small enough to mount in the trunk with the SSD (Hard
drive / spinning platters may fail in a hard enough crash) plus Cellular
radio with Google Drive for backup streaming to the cloud. That way if the
little punk realizes you have cameras and somehow manages to pull the SSD
and run, you've still got it on an upload.

If you look on the site that sells the Black Box cameras, there is a

a 12V to 5V hard wire power supply, and beside that is a listing for wiring

has a generous 15 ft power cord. Cost is less than $10. I bought one.. have

What they are selling is a "fish-eye" camera. It gives visibility of half
a sphere (2 pi steradians). It would be mounted in the ceiling in the
center of a room to show what's going on in the entire room. Note,
however, that details at the edges of the field of view are rather
distorted.

In order to use one of these to show everything around a car, you would
have to mount it on a pole pointed down.

We use these in our server and MDF (main data frame) rooms for PCI compliance

LSM [Lame Stream Media] has made this a "race issue" because it serves
their masters.. It ain't true.

Here is the issue that Trump actually raised.
1. The Judge is a member of a group of lawyers in California that advocate
for and represent, La Raza, [translation "The Race"] which is a politically
militant Latino group that has declared Mr. Trump their sworn enemy because
of his vocal stand against ILLEGAL entry into the USA.

2. By the Federal Rules of Court, and ALL 50 State Rules of Court, AND the
National Bar Association and ALL 50 State Bar Associations Rules of Ethics,
a Judge or a Lawyer who has ANY association with anyone that could be
construed as a Conflict of Interest, MUST Recuse themselves. and as a
Judge, is barred from hearing that case.

3. This Judge [also a Lawyer] has breached those Rules of Court, and the
Bar Association Rules of Ethics by setting on the bench in this case.

4. Mr. Trump, called him out on that breach of the rules.. and by the
Judges OWN rules .. he could be dis-barred from practicing law... AND
removed as a Judge.. or have sanctions against him...

Nothing racial about that.. except in the case of the Judge's
affiliations..

So, again.. Trump is right.. and it's "Always Good to be Right".;))

Re: [MBZ] Dash camera crash video

2016-06-08 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes

Here is what I would suggest.

From Adafruit

1 Raspi $40

4 USB cams ~$50

1 - SSD ~$100

1 GPS unithttps://www.adafruit.com/products/2324 $45

1 touchscreen display $35 (or a bigger one for more $$)

1 mini keyboard $10

wifi module if you want to talk to your phone $12

other random bits

So maybe $250 worth of stuff and some programming and fooling around and
yer in bidness

Here is a tutorial on setting them 4 cams for motion detection, I did
not look at it close enough to see how to record it, but that is
probably doable, as is to overlay the GPS data, time, etc. over the vid
streams.
http://www.pyimagesearch.com/2016/01/18/multiple-cameras-with-the-raspberry-pi-and-opencv/

here is a 2 cam setup with GPS overlay
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTZRGEJeFsU pretty much what you want to
do but with 4 cams

This whole "race" thing in regards to Mexicans or others from SOTB is
kinda interesting. For example, a friend of mine is married to a woman
whose family are Mexican-(US)American but are Irish/mestizo, she has an
Irish surname, some ancestors having settled in Mexico at some point and
spoke Spanish. So she is mostly a white European (Irish) but of the
"Mexican" (country of origin) "race." Now she is an ultra-lib, so is
easily offended by things like this, but as far as "race" she is pretty
much as white as I am (though I have more Cherokee than Lieawatha
Warren) and I am your prototype white boy. Now a lot of people SOTB are
almost pure pre-European-invader indigenos, they look like Mayans and
Aztecs and whatnot, or at least not like the European invaders, so I
guess they would be a definite "race". But a lot of people SOTB are
mixed mestizo so unclear what "race" they are, they are just sorta
browner in varying shades but not all of them, so they might be "of color."

It all confuses me.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Mexicans

2016-06-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Interesting line of thought..

The word "Mexican" is a word devised by the Castilian Spanish "pure breds"
that conquered the Native Lands now called "Mexico".

These pure bred Spaniards came with their weapons, soldiers, and a Royal
Edict from the King of Spain, to grab all the gold and silver for Spain,
but they came with no women.. So..

They took local indian women to fill their needs.. which produced 1/2 breed
children... which the Pure Spanish looked down upon.. they were "bastard
1/2 breeds" and they invented the derisive term "Mexican" which in it's day
held the same connotation as the now much reviled "N" word in USA..

It did then,, and it does now, to the ruling class of "pure Spanish" in
Mexico define a "lower class of person" not worthy of land ownership, or
wealth..

Just a bit of history to chew on.. since, calling someone "Mexican" is
actually "racist" by original intent..

Re: [MBZ] OT: Mexicans

2016-06-08 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
Well, it is important in the courts that we have juries and jurists who
"look like us" from what I can tell of the current agitators, so I think
you are onto something.

Here in Charleston there are a coupla cases of white men allegedly
shooting black people, and the local people of color are demanding that
the juries are "representative" which is code for "has a lot of blacks
on it." I have no issue with juries reflecting the prevailing
demographics per the lawyers acceptance/rejection of various candidates,
as it is done, but to clamor for a stacked jury sends the message that
black jury members can somehow be better judges of guilt or innocence of
(white) persons accused of crimes against blacks, or blacks accused of
crimes. They have some convoluted arguments in favor of that approach,
that are fairly incomprehensible. I think a black judge was assigned to
the shooter of 9, for whatever that is worth.

From what I have observed and have experienced, black folks have some
fairly unreconstructed views on white folks around here, and I will not
entirely dispute their reasons, as some whites have of blacks. The
problem is that it gets injected into everything with no clear means of
resolving the issues, or sometimes even what the issue is. (Of
particular note, some of the local black agitation groups are upset at
the school board for some reasons I have not followed [though it could
be any number of things, the school board is completely incompetent and
dysfunctional], and yesterday they called for a boycott of car dealers
by black folks. Car dealers? WTF? No one can quite figure it out, and
so far they have not enlightened us on their reasoning.)

Apparently the judge in question is a member of a couple of radical racist
organizations himself, including California La Raza Lawyers Association and
another that has expressed antipathy to Rs.

Analysis I have read indicates that none of the decisions made by Curiel in
the Trump case are outside of the range of those a reasonable judge would
make.

Yet, how would a latino react to a judge who was a member of an organization
called the "White Race Association"?

I happen to have several business associates that are practicing lawyers,
and on occasion enter into legal discussions on hypothetical legal issues..

One particular spirited discussion was centered around Jury Selection.. The
hypothetical question was: Since a person is guaranteed speedy trial by a
"jury of his peers" .. does that not impart, in the case of a someone
charged as a serial killer, that his "peers" would be 12 serial killers...
and that by strict interpretation of the law.. only serial killers could
qualify for such jury duty?

Yea, a lot of people make that mistake.  I guess they think TD for turbo
diesel.  But, I agree with you.  A 123 wagon is very different than the sedan.

Cheap price, but the seller is an idiot.  He has a 300D (sedan), not a 300TD

Speaking of the 300TD, here is one that looks interesting.

I wasn't aware of the SLS delete kit. So, is this supposed to correct the need
for the accumulators?

Does the fact that the vacuum to the door locks doesn't work mean that other
things won't work. 300K is lot of miles, but I can't figure out why this
doesn't have any bids on it. I know people bid at the last minute. But, still
what is wrong with this car that I am missing?

I might have to bid on this. Even if it has problems, I would think it could
be fixed up a little and flipped for a decent profit. Maybe I shouldn't be
sending this email to a group of Mercedes guys who have much more experience
than I do at fixing up one of these!

Deleting the SLS doesn't "correct" anything, it makes the car a bouncing betty
instead of a lovely driving MB.
IIRC Andrew went through the trouble of "reconverting" one of his 300TDs to SLS.
I find it strange people want to take out a well engineered excellent, very
simple system, rather than just fixing the darned thing.

I must be looking through the rose colored glasses today. I emailed my brother
and he said no one is bidding because it’s a turd. But, these wagons go for
crazy amounts of money even when they are turds. This one looks like a little
dirty (inside), needs some TLC, but even with 300K miles and SLS delete, don't
these sell for $2500-3500?

The body looks fairly straight from the pics though it would be hard to
tell. 300k miles is no big deal if it runs OK or doesn't burn oil.
Easy enough to find repair bits if you want to fool with it if you could
get it cheap and just want a beater to putt around in. If you got it
cheap you could probably flip it. But you would want to fool with it...

The stuff I read said people tried to put Sedan springs on the rear and it
didn’t work well. But, the newer kits have heavier duty springs that doesn’t
reduce the carrying/towing capacity. But, that could just be all sales puffery!

Re: [MBZ] 123 Diesel in Kansas

2016-06-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Its not the lack of load that makes spring kits suck its the lack of reaction.
An SLS equipped car is an absolute pleasure to drive, the car reacts to the
road and keeps itself stable and prefect regardless of load.Springs will always
be a compromise, too soft a spring and you lose load carrying capacity, too
hard a spring and the ride is harsh. SLS compensates for all conditions
automatically...

The stuff I read said people tried to put Sedan springs on the rear and it
didn’t work well.  But, the newer kits have heavier duty springs that doesn’t
reduce the carrying/towing capacity.  But, that could just be all sales puffery!

Curt remembers correctly.  From my personal experience, an SLS-less wagon does
not handle well and is no fun to drive.  So much so, that I went to great
expense to convert it back to SLS.

[MBZ] Dash camera

2016-06-08 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

Re. installation of dash cam in Schwartze (211): It must be completely
unobtrusive - no cords showing, cam fairly well hidden between RV mirror and
windshield at front edge of overhead panel and simple and easy to operate
(ON/OFF with key) - or SWMBO will not accept it. I'm planning to splice
into keyed power at or near base of lighter and run wire to a 12v accessory
receptacle above driver foot well. (Max, that's why I wanted the accessory
receptacle from the wrecked 124.) So far, though, I've not been able to
pull up the "wood" panel around the gear shift lever in order to gain access
to lighter. I've seen coupla videos showing how easy it's 'sposed to be to
remove this panel, but I can't get it to move. In the videos, it appears
to come up easily by grasping its front edge and lifting with fingers of
both hands simultaneously.

Well, when the car is sold as a 300D, is identified by the Mfgr as a
300D, the mfgr has another model called a 300TD that is different, and
the car in question is even identified on the trunk as a 300D, only a
moron would insist on calling a 300D a 300TD and advertise it as such.

Do people advertise a corvette as a impala?

Yea, a lot of people make that mistake. I guess they think TD for
turbo diesel. But, I agree with you. A 123 wagon is very different

Unusual place to have a spontaneous leak.. Was the tire mounted recently?
If it was.. likely some damage to the tire bead area.. If it wasn't a
possible suspect could be corrosion of the rim at the bead area..

Aluminum rim? Winter salt area? .. Older tire with stiff dried out rubber?

Inquiring minds would ask those questions..

Worst case .. aged out tire starts to leak at the rim... SWMBO who never
looks at tires, drives with low tire.. tire heats up, self destructs..
driver loses control in heavy traffic.. etc etc etc..

My vote is.. 15 bucks at tire shop.. remove tire, inspect rim bead area..
tire bead area.. DOT date code on tire.. Reassemble with necessary
adjustments to any item not up to service. Sleep good at night..

IF the tire is 6 yrs old.. I would not drive with it.. it's to close to the
age hard limit of 7 years.. and seems to be showing evidence of pending
failure by decomposition. At "about" 7 years the rubber compounds
decompose and start turning to "dust". Not safe...

If it's just a roller, to keep a chassis mobile, then OK.. use it for
that..

burner All the burners got burned. I wonder what all the burned
burners will do now. They need to start a new party and run that way.
(i am assuming the socialists already have a candidate.) Lt Don is one
of those burned badly. Maybe he can convince other burners to get the
burn to run, Forest, (burner) run!

the water point that allowed rain to get inside the passenger
