Re: [MBZ] OT Nice

2016-07-14 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
All good points, Unfortunately they are negated by one little fact.

Where are the millions of "good Muslims" speaking out against these violent
acts of terrorism? Where are the millions of "good Muslims" taking ANY
action to stop those who act under the fabrication that "They are not
acting like Islam teaches?"

Answer. There are NONE. There can be NONE because those doing acts of
terror are doing exactly what the Quran and Hadiths demand. Any Muslim who
speaks or acts to stop them is an apostate.. The penalty for apostasy in
Islam is death..

Sorry to offend anyone.. I suggest you read and understand Quran and
Hadiths and draw your own conclusions.

I was thinking the cart on wheels might have such a transformer with a center
tap on the 220v secondary. That would explain the low power that caused them to
switch the A/C to different parts of the building off and on I would think.

We were Progress Energy until its CEO decided to "save some money" by doing
part of the routine replacement of the major unit of a large round high
pressure structure. The structure was held together by steel bands that
encircled it. This was the result:

In the end Progress Energy (Formerly Florida Power) was sold to Duke Energy.

While that is true, it seems that roughly 10% of muslims agree with the
more horrible/perverted form of the religion. And when there are
1.2billion muslims... you can see where it is headed. Or where it is.
More than enough to express their viewpoints quite emphatically. The
sad thing is that they don't seem to discriminate particularly whether
their target is Jews, Christians, Hindoos, Buddhists, other flavors of
Islam, kaffirs, etc. I'm not sure all those groups have wronged them
sufficiently to get that kind of treatment. Slavery is still quite
popular among a good part of the muslim world too, which is at
considerable odds with most civilized sensibilities. Then there is the
whole woman aspect, homosexuals, etc. I guess the "good" ones probably
don't have strong views on that stuff, but it seems to be tolerated to
some extent, which is almost as bad as being part of it.

But, in any case, my thoughts are with the people in Nice, out having a
good holiday time, then this kind of thing has to happen. One worries
about similar events here... oh, wait, it has...

I think a whole house surge protector and dedicated ground rod at the outdoor unit were recommended. I got a 3/4 ton Fujitsu in 2012. It sort of cooled my whole house before I put in a central heat pump, I hadn't really used it much since then. Took it out of my living room and put it in my parents' bedroom last month. Mom sets it at 78 to keep it from freezing her out of their master suite. I used to set it in the 70-74 range and run my furnace blower to spread it around the house. We'd been talking about buying a three way Mitsubishi for my parents' living room / dining room / computer room, but now I'm thinking it's worth a few hundred extra to buy 3 single room units. The single room units always have a higher SEER rating too.

Yeah we tried shutting off and restarting, no go. The board on the
compressor has some LEDs that should be lighting but aren't. The indoor
units are all blinking their light saying they can't talk to the outdoor
unit. They have power off the outdoor unit through a 12V source. I'm
thinking there might be a 5V tap on the transformer too for the circuit
board, I vaguely recall that from my quick perusal of the manual. I
guess I'll check that first, see if it is putting out 5V and the board
is getting power.

yes it is an LG unit. My guy says they have troubles with the
Mitsubishis, which are supposedly "the best" and he does not like the
mini-splits. He also said Mits makes their own, all the other Asian
brands are made by one company he could not remember, so they are all
pretty much the same.

2016-07-14 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
The service manual has some troubleshooting procedures, my Korengrish
should work pretty well. I'll have to get at it this weekend, figure I
can poke around at it as good as my guy. I'll have to dig out the
warranty info but it is probably beyond.

I'll look into the gas and a gauge set too.

The installation manual / plan should give some idea of how it works, so
then you can engineer a test method or two. Is there a big-a** start
capacitor? Those are notorious for causing a no-start condition when all
the rest of the system is fine.

Re: [MBZ] Request for help

2016-07-14 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Even in places where you can select your power company the power gets
delivered over the same lines, regardless of supplier. So it's probably no
better (and maybe worse) than the Duke monopoly. Here in NC, the Duke
monopoly got split up but (little-by-little) came back together. We had
Progress Energy when we moved here 11 years ago but now it's Duke Energy
Progress and I expect the "Progress" part won't last. On the other hand, I
consider our electrical power to be the best bargain of the utilities.

There is an adjustment wheel on the side of the plug where the USB plug is
located. I just noticed it today, but haven’t had a chance to plug it back in.
 I would assume that’s what it’s for.

Bought a 30 lb tank a few years ago, didn't need a license then. Amazon,
about $125 and wait a few days.

The installation manual / plan should give some idea of how it works, so
then you can engineer a test method or two. Is there a big-a** start
capacitor? Those are notorious for causing a no-start condition when all
the rest of the system is fine.

That’s what my $5.99 mega magnet on a stick from Sears I bought in 1981 is for.
I was working on my Pinto and dropped the hex tool for the head bolts down the
oil drain on the back of the head. I ran to Sears and found the magnet on an
extendible stick for $5.99 which I used to extract the hex tool from the oil
pan with.

That tool has saved me more times that I would like to recall.

Korean?LG?Did you kill the breaker and try to reboot?Check every wire, there's probably four conductors for each indoor unit?I wonder if an electronic failure in an indoor unit can shut the whole system down or if it means something's wrong in the outdoor unit?I took the test for the auto license online in the 1990s, don't know what I did with the license.A few years ago I bought a can of 410a on Amazon for something like $120.It's still sealed, but I bet it would cost some serious $$ to ship it to you without a wholesale UPS account. But if you have a transformer, like Jim said, you can hook the primary up
to the available 110 VAC and then connect the 110 VAC of the secondary to
the neutral in such a way that it provides the opposite phase. Thus,
between the available 110 VAC and the 110 VAC output you have 220 VAC.

The limitation, of course, is that the available 110 VAC cannot supply as
much power as the original 220 VAC did.

I just bought it for scoping stuff on the car in hard to get places. I’ll have
the injectors out in the next month or two if things go well and I’ll use it to

see what it looks like inside the engine.

For under $7 to my doorstep I figure if it helps me once it’s more than paid

[MBZ] OT HVAC issue

2016-07-14 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
My mini-split quit working the other night, indoor units are blinking 5
times which seems to be a code (if I can understand Korengrish) that
they are no longer communicating with the outdoor compressor unit. I
thought the thing might have gone low on refrigerant but my guy came by
today and hooked up a tank and the thing would not come on, it did not
look like it was low on refrigerant even before he hooked up the tank.
I guess I am going to have to get in and do some troubleshooting on the
board and connections to see if the board fried or what.

In any case we talked about these things, he is not a fan of them as
with all the connections they tend to leak down. I have 16 connections
between the compressor unit and the 4 head units, but it looked like it
has been holding. I mentioned I should just get a tank of gas and some
gauges and have it around to keep my units topped off, he agreed that
was reasonable to do. It's 410A refrigerant, gauges look standard but
he had to use an adaptor to fit the Schrader on the unit. I am
presuming I need to go get an AC "license" to buy the tank of gas,
gauges should be easy to get. The manual gives the whole charging
procedure so nothing exotic there.

Who has gotten a "license" on the EPA site? What's that like? My guy
would probably buy me a tank if I asked him, he's pretty easy about the
whole deal.

[MBZ] UPDATE: Request for help

2016-07-14 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Went by clinic and talked to one of the employees.
The power company had sent an emergency crew over early yesterday and got the
clinic some partial power which enabled them to have a normal business day
without oppressive heat although they had to keep switching power between
different parts of the clinic.
My guess is that some of the animal loving clients had gotten in touch with
Duke Power and complained about their allowing animals to suffer for two days,
but that's just a guess.(There are retirees in this part of the county who
could raise a big fuss if they wanted to, and some may be clinic clients.)
Anyway, it looks like the power crisis will be over if Duke Power does a
permanent fix this morning like they promised.

Gerry

P.S. Vets wife showed me a cellphone picture of some sort of unit on wheels
that had cables draped on it. This was supposed to give them partial power and
was apparently what they used, but what was it and how did it work?
If only one leg of a service entrance cable is bad, can the other 110v leg be
converted to 110v-220v and temporarily provide half the power to a business
like the clinic?
I'll try to get a look at it this morning if possible.

[MBZ] Chinee Endoscope

2016-07-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I think we were discussing the cheap (sub $10) eBay/Chinee endoscopes a while
back.

I just got mine last week and had a chance to play with it last night. I found
that on a Mac if I used the Photobooth application and chose the USB camera as
the input it worked great.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/262310448166?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649=561070589046=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

No do it yourself colonoscopies just yet, but with the little time I spent with
it I think it could easily pay for itself with a couple of uses.

It's got rare (undesirable) brown paint and rare (desirable) PW.
Overpriced, but not excessively. Can't tell - does it have a sunroof?

Yes, it's called a transformer.

Each leg supplies 110V; you can lose one leg, and, if the neutral conductor
is intact, the other leg still supplies 110V . Only the stuff on that 110V,
operative leg will still work.
