Re: [MBZ] Quote Without Comment

2016-08-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
To "do something about" is a pretty loose context subject to many
interpretations.

Since Mrs. Clinton's stated positions on gun rights is openly completely
against the Bill of Rights, 2nd Amendment, I posit his intent was to urge
those who stand for 2nd Amendment to work against her and her position.

Logic would indicate Mr. Trump would never openly or privately advocate a
"mafia type, do something about" intent.

However, the media is hungry for any morsel of dirt that can be presented,
even if it has to twist the event, as we have seen on numerous recent
broadcasts.

I suggest a betting pool to guess how many poll points he gains after he is
attacked on this, or, if so inclined, he loses.

Being sporting men, of course.

Clutches do wear out, and can be replaced in the car without venting
the system.

I don't remember the correct gap, maybe 0.060"? Not big anyway, can
be adjusted by removing shims from under the center of the clutch when
you take it off. No point in doing that if it's badly worn though.

A bad reed valve may give you the problems you have, but I don't know
that for sure -- all my systems have been converted to R134a and give
poor performance at idle, probably need a bit more charge.

Neither engine nor pump should need to be "rebuilt" in under 400K
Trans Maybe @250 to 350k. (assuming oil changes as prescribed and
OE quality filters used (mann only for the 124 trans).

I'd not buy a car with a "rebuilt" OM603, unless I discounted the cost
of the replacement engine and installation. Factory crate engine, as
Curt said, is a plus. The kleb car I had had a "rebuilt" IP (not from a
dealer) and never did trust that IP. A Bosch dealer can't get all parts
nor specs for calibration for a MB pump. According to Bosch, they are
"MB only." You have to get the rebuilt exchange, or new pump from the
dealer. In truth, a really good IP shop can replace elements, and if
they have had access to a known good pump, can determine the
calibration, within reason. I think they can't get parts for the
governor, and may not be able to test the governor. At least that USED
to be the case...

The first OM603 I had with 300k, I did a compression test, and all
cylinders were 425psi. That is the high side of the factory spec for a
new, broken in engine, or an engine in perfect shape. At 300k, you might
want to check chain stretch...

Max Dillon via Mercedes
August 9, 2016 at 7:09 PM
Indeed, usually a rebuilt engine will not last as long as an original
engine, unless it was rebuilt by Mercedes-Benz. They are very
difficult engines to rebuild correctly. I would take Kaleb's over your
example every time.

A rebuilt transmission is a bonus, and if the injection pump is
rebuilt that is also a bonus.

Actually, lowering taxes across the board produces more tax revenue. I
know, heads are spinning at that comment. Follow along for just a bit.

Lower taxes means less burden on both workers and businesses. That
directly

equates to more business orders placed, more goods sold, and more work
hours paid for to produce those goods, thus, more wages paid.

Each time a dollar is spent, it pays a tax. Spend more dollars, collect
more taxes.

If you tax a dollar at 90% and it only gets spent one time.. you
collect 90

cents.
Spending produces a taxable event so "people" stop spending, banks stop
loaning, and industry moves out of the country to places where they don't
have to deal with regulation and confiscatory taxes. Like China, India,
Mexico, etc etc..

If you tax a dollar at 5% and both industry and labor spends that dollar
and keeps circulating it, which is what happens when a fair tax rate is
used, like back in "1952", the total taxes collected are exponentially
higher. Dollars stay on the move, creating "taxable events".

To gain perspective, an example. In May of 2016, every cargo ship in the
world was setting in port, or at anchor, or empty. There is a web site
which tracks every ship in the world, you can look it up.. They were all
setting because factories had not received sufficient orders for the
previous months to fill them. Warehouses that would receive their loads
were at capacity, [capacity defined by willingness to buy and warehouse
unsold goods] and companies that bought goods from those warehouses simply
were not buying... because people were either broke or holding what ever
funds they had, rather than buy more goods..

Simple fact... if the government taxed every worker at 100% of annual
income, it would only run the government, at it's present rate of
spending,

for about 5 days.
We don't need more taxes.. we need more restraint on those doing the
spending, as a starting point.

Re: [MBZ] OT: political signs

2016-08-09 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Actually, lowering taxes across the board produces more tax revenue. I
know, heads are spinning at that comment. Follow along for just a bit.

Lower taxes means less burden on both workers and businesses. That directly
equates to more business orders placed, more goods sold, and more work
hours paid for to produce those goods, thus, more wages paid.

Each time a dollar is spent, it pays a tax. Spend more dollars, collect
more taxes.

If you tax a dollar at 90% and it only gets spent one time.. you collect 90

Simple fact... if the government taxed every worker at 100% of annual
income, it would only run the government, at it's present rate of spending,
for about 5 days.
We don't need more taxes.. we need more restraint on those doing the
spending, as a starting point.

I'd rather have a perfect running 200kmi diesel than a rebuilt one, unless I
knew exactly who and how it was rebuilt. Now, a factory crate motor, that's
really worth something.
There's probably a lot more rebuilders who would do a good job on the
transmission, and anybody can renew the suspension as long as he knows to
tighten the bolts on all the rubber bushings with the car's weight on the
suspension and to use a spreader bar when adjusting toe-in.

I wouldn't consider a rebuilt engine a huge bonus, these engines simply don't
fail in the 200,000 mile range. Might need injectors but thats not even a big
job.

Oh, Kaleb's 300d looks nice, but I have been dealing on one like it for
awhile, and I want something mostly rebuilt. So I'm thinking of buying this
1990 model instead.

The motor was completely rebuilt, as were the trans and suspension, which
should count for something I think, as compared to driving examples with
nearly 200k on them. That stuff is not free; the parts alone for the motor
are probably 5k, plus 2k for the trans, etc. I just want to drive something
- not fix it for once.

My only other MBZ cars right now are the 606 87 wagon and my 123 wagon,
neither of which I am inclined to let go of just yet =:-)

Re: [MBZ] Ac again

2016-08-09 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
The belt and all tensioner parts are new. The belt is not slipping it's
actually the clutch itself that slips causing the bark. Cools great though
except at idle. If a compressor is worn out will it work fine at highway speed
but not pump enough while sitting? I have seen r12 converted to 134 do that or
if they are low on freon but this is a stock 134 system with a fresh charge and
it will freeze you out while driving but just quits when sitting still.

I would replace the belt and check the condition of the clutch, easy
enough to spin it with the engine off and check for binding in the
compressor or faulty bearings, etc.

Also verify that the gap at the clutch is correct.

You don't have much slippage unless the KLIMA has been replaced with a
simple relay -- don't know if that model has separate relays or just
the one big electronic one.

Check the belt tensioner as well, if it's bad the belt can bark and
the AC will perform poorly.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap diesel for sale

2016-08-09 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
What would this car be worth with faded paint, a dented trunk lid, newly
fully rebuilt tranny/turbo/injection pump/motor, new ball joints, shocks
etc, and an AC that doesn't turn on (but heat works and it has a new
compressor)?

I'm thinking 3k, but could it be more?

Thanks for input.

The liberal Heaven of Seattle has become a homeless encampment in the last 8
years. These folks are taking over the public rights of way, highway verges,
roundabouts, sidewalks, any space they can find to set up camp. The population
of unemployed in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Seattle has boomed under
O’bummer. Bush was not able to produce enough of this population over an 8
year period. The homeless under his rule took up park benches, and clogged
shelters, but nothing like the thousands living in tents and what look like
refugee camps.

Under the Evil Queen, I am sure there will be even more dispossessed and an
even greater decline in national infrastructure. Roving bands of pan handlers
will swarm along pot holed roadways, pleading for handouts that the goobermint
is no longer capable of producing. The third world will have taken hold of
America and we will all have to move to Canada for the health care and not
because we just can not stand the idiot residing in the festering swamp along
the Potomac.

Re: [MBZ] OT more Car / Mercedes talk - keeping cool in hot humid climates

2016-08-09 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I'll get the parts list later. Basically a little Arduino, a temp/humid
sensor, and a small 2-line LCD display. You have to write some code and
program the Arduino but that is pretty easy using code on Adafruit you
can pretty much cut/paste with some minor jiggering. Put the
programming environment on your PC, plug in the Arduino to a USB port,
then shoot the program to it, it runs.

Or look here for the stuff (bit more expensive than your chinee
supplier, but probably decent quality). https://www.adafruit.com/categories

I have a little temp/humidity sensor on an Arduino and a display to
show both. Easy enough to make one, you can leave it in the car and
run off 12V. Probably $12 in parts from chinee sources, you could
embed the display in your dash somewhere, make it look "factory."

Right, see the other post where I ponder attaching one to a reflector on the
side of the lantern. The reflectors get pretty hot and with the heatsink off to
the side as opposed to being right in the rising heat it should be more
effective.

Quoting myself, "Just having the cold side in the dark should give
you a little difference."  How do you expect that heatsink to
dissipate it's heat?

I have said almost nothing about the hot side. Stick it as close to
the lantern as you can without melting it.  Done.

I was referring to the COLD side needing a heatsink with an
insulated wall to keep the lantern heat off of it.

If you put a big, finned aluminum hunk, un-shaded, 1 cm further
away from the lamp than the hot side of the peltier - how much
cooler do you think it will be?  What about after it's been there
for 10 minutes?

I'm presuming you are wanting sustained current - not just the
first 30 seconds until the cold side warms up.  That means the heat
flowing through the peltier from the hot to the cold side will warm
the cold side until there is little current flow.  To keep generating
electricity, that heat has to be removed from the cold side.  A
heatsink is a good choice for that job.

But for it to work well, the  has to be kept out of the heat from the
lantern.  That's why I mentioned an insulated wall.

I need to do that.
Dunno, whats the burning temp of gasoline?
I suspect its going to take some experimentation to find the best spot.
Probably it'll work better in colder weather when theres a greater temperature
differential.
Actually just occurred to me they make reflectors that go on the side of the
lantern to push light in one direction, the back side of one of those might be
a good place for the peltier, it won't get super hot and the heatsink won't be
above the lantern. Thats the worst part I think is that the heatsink is going
to be in the heat...

I was worried about getting them hot enough but you've got me nervous they

the device out toward the rim. You can just almost touch the outer rim without
burning yourself while the very top of the vent is much too hot to touch.

I have a little temp/humidity sensor on an Arduino and a display to show
both. Easy enough to make one, you can leave it in the car and run off
12V. Probably $12 in parts from chinee sources, you could embed the
display in your dash somewhere, make it look "factory."

Funny you should post that. I just ordered parts to charge my cell phone based
on the waste heat coming off a Coleman lantern. They already make a system to
charge your phone off a wick lantern but a Coleman makes a lot more heat.I got
10 peltier devices on eBay from Guangzu Charlie for around $18, he's also
sending me a USB voltage regulator. I'm debating if I need to make a custom
vent (lid) for a lantern or if I could stick them right to and existing one.
Should be a fun experiment anyway.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Fendering

2016-08-09 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Which reminds me of another semi-automotive thing I wanted to mention.
Changed the oil in my compressor yesterday, about a year overdue, it was grey
with metal which isn't a huge surprise as its the first change. Ran out of
compressor oil so I headed to Advance (formerly Car Quest) only to find that
they're closing down, all employees moving to different stores. The Car Quest
had been there for decades, Advance killed it in just over a year. It was
tremendously busy under Car Quest, the last few times I went in they didn't
have anything, couldn't order anything, didn't know about anything. Typical
Advance Auto buffoonery.
So I headed over to Federated Auto Parts which I hadn't used much in the past
being that their store was smaller and less well stocked. He had compressor oil
in stock for $10.25/qt but suggested I could use non-detergent 30wt for
$3.40/qt. I went with the latter. Pouring it in it looked just like the
compressor oil I'd used previously and the compressor sounds exactly the same.
I'm thinking I'll run this until the fall and change it again to make sure I
got the schmoo out...

[MBZ] OT more Car / Mercedes talk - keeping cool in hot humid climates

2016-08-09 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
A few weeks ago after my thread about window tint and keeping kühl, I
decided to try a little experiment. I stopped cracking the windows and
sunroof while parked, but continued to put the sunshade in the windshield.
When I did drive the car, I kept the AC on recirculation and blasting full
fan and set at minimum temperature.

In-car temperatures would get up to about 110 deg F or so, by the end of
the work day, parked in an asphalt lot. The major difference was that
humidity levels in the car were not ambient (80% and higher) but seemed to
stay much lower. The result was that once I started driving the car, the
AC was able to bring the temperature and comfort level down to tolerable
much more quickly.

I just purchased a cheapo hygrometer on Amazon that I'm going to use to get
some data, see if my theory is confirmed.
