[MBZ] Larry, you still here? Uh Oh! Oil ?

2016-08-30 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I see there is $5 a jug rebate for valvoline synthetic. Does anyone
know if they make an oil suitable to substitute for M1 15W-50 in old
Dissels? I assume I can find a jug of 0-30 for the dogde. You need to
buy 2-3 jugs for the rebate.

Has anyone had experience with the valvoline synthetic? Any oil
analyses to compare to M1?

Does anyone know if the O'Reilley Synthetic is made by Valvoline? Their
dino oil is, or was, so it might make sense that the syn is theirs also.

The IH 392 was a medium duty truck engine that made its way down into the light

A lot of em were used to pull stock trailers and for hot shots pulling
as many cars as they can cram on a trailer.  Camper use was possibly
less stressful for them.  If this was was not used for a lot of heavy
towing, it could be a gem.

Gas consumption is horrible.  Pretty much turn on a 1/4" or 5/16 hose
into the manifold and let er rip.

My favorite 454 story is how one was pulling an empty stock trailer up a
long grade, with little or no muffler, grunting and groaning. (about
1995, so it was an 88 or 89 pickup)  I was driving the 66 IH 1500 with
probably 8000 lb of cargo up the same grade, passing him effortlessly,
then when I got beside him I stomped the pedal,  the back 2 barrels of
the 392 opened up, the front end of the old 1500 rose up 3-4 inches and
we accelerated pretty fast for a truck going uphill.  no grunting or
groaning, the old truck just went.  At that point it had around 400,000
miles on it.  It was originally a 304.  No way it would stand up and
take off like that with the 304.

GIven a choice between a IH 3/4 ton with 392 4 bbl and a 454 in a gm
truck, I'd take the IH, hands down.  But you won't find one for the
price of that shovey.  (IF you could fine one!)

454 Chevy engine... the engine application is cross linked with the
speedometer and the fuel gauge however.

The fuel gauge will go to empty at the inverse rate the speedometer goes to
faster.

I have a 96 ext cab with a 305 (which does no different from the 350
mileage-wise near as I can tell), has like 110Kmi on it now, 4WD,
minimal issues (except for deathcool rotted head gasket I replaced),
still in good shape except for AC is not working. I really like the truck.

I think the 454 was mostly directed at those who would be towing larger
loads and would show no particular benefit in general. If you can get
it for a good price it would probably last near forever, so gas might
not be a huge consideration given how far down it is on depreciation,
ins costs, etc. and the engine is "bulletproof!"

Re: [MBZ] Insanity bid for 500E _ what am I missing?

2016-08-30 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Compared to earlier muscle cars (most of which it can outrun) it is
cheap. Also consider it is a way to get a Mercedes with a porch. It is
Porch type 2758, so it would make a good car for Larry or Woger (RIP)
who feel the need for a porch. Also consider the electronics are
minimal, and it seems to be well preserved and low mile. That makes a
collectible muscle car that is not likely to become immobile due to
electronics failure, while also being a high end marque, and also with
appeal to the porch crowd.

no way I'd pay that much...

Re: [MBZ] Carolina peaches

2016-08-30 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
In spite of rain and humidity in the 90% range, the cardboard carolina
peaches I threw on the compost pile are so dry they are not rotting
after 5 days in the pile. The cardboard peaches must have been
plasticised with something that is not natural.

Sorry Clay, I make it a point to AVOID the tasteless PNW fruit. A real
Red Delicious grown in its native turf, or in New Zealand taste great.
The same cultivar grown in the PNW is pretty but has NO flavor. Those
peaches may be juicy if picked ripe, but the lack of flavor will make
them a looser.

The good news: the local store had more Missouri peaches in this week,
so I bought a bunch. Mmmm.

You seem to be applying your great plains/midwestern middle and upper class

consider important; facility with a camera (visual competence), neatness,
cleanliness, deductive reasoning ability, literary competence, education level,

However, the question of why "average" people buy used luxury cars instead of

Nothing on the web site about shipping.

So I was in Boise last week and went into a Wally World near the hotel I
was staying at. Lo and behold, they had large bins of LOCAL IDAHO PRODUCE
super cheap, along with B.C. and Washington State cherries!! I checked
around and no one else had any fresh cherries from anywhere. I packed away
two large bags of the WA and BC fruit in my checked luggage - plus about 5
lbs. of ID potatoes and sweet and red onions - and brought them home. My
opinion of WM may be evolving...

I thought your response was funny, not snobbish! Maybe I missed it.

No military time for me. Perhaps it is genetic. I would have been the 5th
Generation to serve in the Army. But, my father actually talked me out of it.
He was active duty for almost 25+ years and 8 more in the reserves retiring as
a Full Bird. He was also in Government service and retired in 2005 after
Katrina. I probably should have joined the military. I seriously considered
JAG. If I had, I would probably be a Lt. Col by now. I checked into it a
couple years ago when they raised the age limit to 42 for Jag. I'm 43 now and
its too late.

Isn't there some sort of auto upholstery shop nearby? Several years ago I had
a Cadillac and the back seat was badly torn up. My indy recommended a shop in
town and they recovered the seat. They matched the leather pretty well and it
looked great. It cost about $150 IIRC. I think I got the dealer price since
my friend sent me. But, a place like that might be worth a shot. It turned it
into a great looking car with a perfect interior versus a car that gave the
impression it had been abused.

You seem to be applying your great plains/midwestern middle and upper class
standards to a cross section of Americas population. The values that you
consider important; facility with a camera (visual competence), neatness,
cleanliness, deductive reasoning ability, literary competence, education level,
and upper IQ level; aren't common characteristics of the majority.
However, the question of why "average" people buy used luxury cars instead of
less complicated and more sensible cars, still remains. Are they trying to
compensate for their perceived deficiencies?
(End of snobbish reply)

Re: [MBZ] Holy mother of god

2016-08-30 Thread clay via Mercedes
I am fairly certain there are no MB Tex or Leather seat covers to be had. If
you were of a mind to get el cheepo Tex in good condition, maybe a spray would
be the way to go for the Green to come back. I am stuck with my leather seats
in the 107, since there is nobody who makes leather that color of fashion
anymore.
