Needs to freeze the little puddles they breed in. A good hard freeze, not just
drop below freeze point. Best to go around the yard with your used 710 fluid
and dribble a little in each puddle.

Re: [MBZ] My 87 wagon runs poorly - what to do?

2017-03-16 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
The original broke in such a way that the crack extends into the round sleeve
so far that it will continuously leak oil at a high rate.

Also I just queried the guy who serviced and set the injector pressures, and he
set them at 115 bar, not 135 bar, so I've got to pull those and return to him
for rework.

With the nozzle holder and heat shield out, you can visually inspect

get around the ball in the prechamber.

Status update

Timing has been corrected, didn't help.

Turbo boost restored to ~14 psi, and that helped to resolve a lot of
the problem. Smoke is gone, but the nailing persists.

Correct glow plugs installed, didn't help.

Injectors with new Monark nozzles installed tonight, and if anything
the problem is worse. :\

I may need to find a new mechanic. The fellow who installed the
injectors FAILED to put heat shields under #1 and #2!!! What a
looser! When I found this I thought "Ahh HAH!! This is it!" but alas
I don't see the improvement I was expecting. Perhaps there is
excessive carbon build up in those two pre-chambers, and I've got to
burn that out?

I can think of three more things to try:

(1) Rebuild the delivery valves (DVs) again.

(2) Swap all the DVs with a "known good" used set, from the original pump.

(3) Replace the injection pump.

I don't think compression is the issue, the car started just fine at
28 deg F this a.m., and per normal it idles smoothly for a few seconds
while the glow plugs are hot, and then it starts to miss.

used to get about 26 in town, 28 on the highway. Starts fine, idles fine.
A diesel-purge treatment will clear it right up, and it will run just fine
(and get better mileage) for about a month, and then it declines back to
poor running. Italian tune-ups will also help a bit (especially with the
smoking).

What changed? I installed an injection pump from a 3.5 liter engine. One
of the three hold-down tangs on the original IP broke (long story) so
I had

to replace it, and I had this 3.5 liter IP on the shelf.

When I installed this "new" IP, I overhauled the delivery valves, and
adjusted the ALDA 1/2 turn richer. I have since moved the ALDA screw back
to the original position, I think, I need to check the records. I may have
only moved it back 1/4 turn.

What else is wrong? I have the wrong glow plugs installed. When I
installed the "new" head a few years ago (with oblique injection) I
swapped

in the relatively new glow plugs from the original head. Oblique injection
heads use a glow plug that is shorter.

Last weekend I adjusted the timing (it was a couple degrees advanced), and
then went on a 900 mile highway trip for work. No change in performance.
I think that this bigger pump is over-fueling the engine, resulting in
lots

of un-burned fuel and carbon build up.

Options that I can think of:

1) Back off the ALDA screw a little more.
2) Install the correct glow plugs.
3) Check the turbo output, bump it back up if low.
4) Remove the 3.5 liter injection pump, put a 3.0 liter IP back in
(Wilton's old 300D engine has one)
5) Pull the engine and tranny, swap in engine / tranny from Wilton's 300D.
This is attractive because my engine has a nagging oil leak that I haven't
been able to solve, plus that engine / tranny are much younger, only 143k
miles. The downside is that engine still has the original #14 head, but
that is minor (I think the head is sound).

[MBZ] The sun came out...

2017-03-16 Thread clay via Mercedes
today. After many weeks of rain. And more rain is on the way, enough to make
the land slide from hills and stuff. Maybe some day in the far future the sun
might return.

With the sun out, I got stupid. First I took apart the spare turbo I picked up
at PnP. Not all the way down, just a little apart. Then I cleaned it of much
rust and carbon. Which lead to putting it in the oven at 300f for two hours to
dry it all out. The turbine spins very well. I do not know what this means.

The Gen I headlights were a mess. Passenger side was missing a door and both
sides had cracked fog lights. Once I figured out how to remove the lower trim
I removed the old lamps and installed a set of Gen II headlights. I had to do
this twice, because I forgot to remove the lower angle mounts from the
originals.

Then I took the Gen I set apart. I intend to clean the buckets and polish the
trim. Maybe I sell it on FleaBay. No lamps, just the buckets. Buyer has to
provide his own doors.

The exhaust donuts out back were shot. I got a set of fresh rubber rings. One
ring went on fine. The other (outer) decided to fail instead of going on. I
used a tire iron to try to hook it on the hook, but it decided to split. So, I
pulled a length of rebar wire to make a temporary metal ring until I can get
FLAPS to replace the busted one.

After washing my hands, I got in the car and went to work getting the not
working Pioneer radio out of the dash. I had to fake a set of radio keys. The
cluster pull tool was able to pull the radio out. That was good. Even better
was that the wires were labeled, so when I find an old Becker of that era
(early 80’s) I can make it work.

Rather than dumping ATF into the fuel, which is my mind has always been a
somewhat questionable practice, do a couple of rounds of Diesel Purge at the
pump then hit it with a couple of bottles of Red Line Diesel Fuel Catalyst.
You can find it at Pep Boys among other FLAPS.

If that doesn’t cure it you’ve got bigger problems.

2017-03-16 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Max,
Poor a pint or quart of trans fluid in the tank and run it through. It will
lube everything in the system. If that doesn't help, it may be time to do what
I always recommend...see a mechanic. Or...get an older 617. I'm sure Dan could
fix you up with one that would only take 2-3 months to get in good running
order and all your spare time :-)
Good luck and best wishes,

[MBZ] Who is Best?

2017-03-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I am looking at some drive train (soft) parts for the 300SEL. Understand that I
want to minimize my investment, but not at the cost of using a part that I know
will crap out in a year (URO.)

A drive shaft center support, for example:

Febi/Bilstein

Corteco

Meyle

Vaico (URO/APA?)

I’m guessing Corteco is probably the best quality short of an MB part.

Craig, she drives like that in the snow as well. How she has escaped major
accidents or damage is completely beyond my comprehension.

When she drives the 350SDL I tell her that once she gets out on the main road
(it’s up to operating temperature by then) she can “drive it like she stole
it.” She must have this week because my mileage in that car is way off. I’ve
not gotten to 400 miles on this tank and it’s down to 1/8 of a tank. She drove
it to work two days, the rest of that was me.

I love her awful, but I don’t like to ride with her.

I took a long hard look in each pre-chamber, nothing amiss that I could see.
After cleaning up #1 & #2, with all injectors out, I cranked the engine through
a few revolutions to blast out any junk that might have fallen in.

Easy / cheap to try swapping out the DVs, compared to procuring and swapping an
injection pump.

improvement. When I parked at work this a.m., there was a miss at idle, which

[MBZ] Nice Politics

2017-03-16 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Texas Congressmen livestream road trip to Washington

When a winter storm threatened their travel plans, two Texas Congressman
embarked on a buddy trip for the ages.

Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat from El Paso, and Will Hurd, a Republican from San
Antonio, had their flights from Texas to Washington DC cancelled due to heavy
snow in the capital.

The two men, who did not know one another well, decided to share a car and make
the 30-hour drive.

They livestreamed much of the trip on Periscope and Facebook Live.

O'Rourke called it "the longest bi-national congressional live town hall in the
history of the United States".

Image caption A DC snowstorm was milder than expected, but still shut down the
airports

They used the time to interact with their constituents and share their views on
hot button political issues, from immigration (both men live along the
US-Mexico border) to the terrorist threat posed by the so-called Islamic State
(Hurd is a former CIA analyst.)

It wasn't all high-level policy debates. The men sang along to Willie Nelson,
The Clash and Buddy Holly, and made several stops for coffee, burritos and
donuts.

Votes in DC were scheduled for 630pm Wednesday night. The men left San Antonio
at 7am on Tuesday and stopped in Nashville at 3am the next morning, after a day
spent on the road and on camera.

Image caption Hurd shared the stage with Paul Ryan in 2015

"The last couple hours were tough," O'Rourke told the audience.

"You stuck with us, kept us company, suggested songs for the playlist, gave us
some good questions. Settled the pie v cake dispute," he said, referring to a
battle of dessert supremacy that ignited a lively debate.

While travelling, they received phone calls from current and former members of
congress, including House Majority leader Kevin McCarthy, Hawaii Congresswoman
Tulsi Gabbard, Wisconsin Congresswoman Gwen Moore, and retired Majority leaders
Bill Frist and Tom Daschle.

The current elected officials who called in were asked to talk about a
programme they were working on in Congress - and who they would choose as a
bipartisan road-trip buddy.

"Joe Kennedy would be a good one - he'd have some good Kennedy family history
and is a great guy," said Republican Randy Webber.

Though O'Rourke and Hurd both oppose President Trump's plan to build a wall
along the Texas-Mexico border, they differ on several key issues.

"Beto likes to get the tank down close to E before we fill up," Hurd, who had a
more conservative petrol policy, told viewers.

O'Rourke also prefers to drive without stopping, while Hurd favours more pit
stops.

"Will wanted to stop at every school house along the way," and engage the
students, O'Rourke said, but school schedules and their tight timeline made
such a request impossible.

Image caption O'Rourke was elected in 2013

"It would have been fun, man!" Hurd insisted.

The men were not above stunts to boost their ratings - or ease the monotony of
the road.

"We're at 600 live views," O'Rourke said on Wednesday morning. "We peaked early
at 750 when Will was doing 20 push-ups in the Pilot gas station parking lot in
cowboy boots."

As the day went on, viewership grew to as many as 4,000 viewers, helped by
interviews the men gave to news programmes and shares on social media. They
attracted comments from India, the UK and Philippines.

Image caption Will Hurd talks to reporters in front of the Capitol building

With three hours and thirty minutes left before votes in the House, their GPS
showed them three hours away from Capitol Hill - but they would be driving
through Washington during rush hour.

At 5:51pm local time, they arrived in front of the Capitol building, having
reached their destination ahead of schedule and together.

"We always talk about the things that divide us, when we could be talking about
the things that unite us," Hurd said during the trip.

"Even if we do disagree, we don't have to be disagreeable,"

Question:
Did these men need anything more than a smart cellphone to livestream their
trip?

With the nozzle holder and heat shield out, you can visually inspect the
prechambers, except the 6 holes in the tip. With a small catheter cam,
you should be able to see the holes in the end, you just have to get
around the ball in the prechamber.

I think the next step (other than Kle'bs suggestion) is #3.

Maybe a compression check?

Maybe an egt monitor or Afr sensor in the tailpipe to get a sense of the
mix.

Or just turn the boost up and see how it goes.

Dieselvolk,

all. Under anything more than gentle throttle, the engine pings and
smokes. Mileage is bad, around 22 mpg in town, about 25 on the highway. I
used to get about 26 in town, 28 on the highway.
