I've driven an M-1A1 and it was quite amazing. It had a handlebar with a twist
grip like a motorcycle. So much power! I've also driven old-style (side
lever) diesel tanks which aren't in the same league.

My (gas) truck used to do that. I think the rubber seal on the gas cap became

Permit for grading and drainage, because the EPA has dictated any water
shed area has to have an engineered study before the drainage can be
modified... [go figure... the government in action.. ]

Then... because the building covers ground by virtue of having a roof...
the run off has to be calculated and accounted for when it rains [The
government didn't get the memo that this is the desert and it only rains
0.20 inches per year... ]

Then... because it has a flush toilet.. which goes into a septic system.. I
have to have an "Approved Plan and Installation for Septic"

The list goes on and on... to date.. a bit more than $8,000 in permit
fees and another $12,000 in engineering fees to produce drawings with
engineers registered stamp for the various elements of the project.

All for a place to build Mercedes and restore them... and other projects...

Rear ended? My 200D was one of the first to hit the shores of the US
of A. It was sold in Nov of 1965 as a 66 model. It does not have the
fender turn signals. I'd do a VIN check for Mfg. date. A 65 should be
a 190Dc in the USA. 66 are all 200D. I have never seen a holdover 65
sold as a 66. It could be a Yuro import, not imported by MBNA. Check
the engine number too. Both are 621, but the subtypes are different.

Looks nice, but something does not look right.

Yes bathrooms and kitchens needs help.

There is what appears to have been an old fuse box or wiring junction in a hall
way upstairs behind a fancy wooden door in the wall and it's been upgraded to
new wiring. I did not look around for a circuit breaker box. No idea on the
plumbing.

> How's the roof and paint?

It will need new shingle at some point soon. They do not appear to be leaking
from what i can tell. There is another fancy wooden staircase that leads up to
a semi finished attic and I can see most of the roof decking has been replaced
as the bottom looks fairly new, was probably done when the current shingle were
put on. There is a lot of wood rot the facing board of the roof line, whatever
you call it, and the soffet.

> I'm presuming no insulation anywhere you can do blow-in for that.
There is some blown in insulation in the attic.

Are these that you are talking about Windows that mount outside the originals
like storm windows? Some of the windows have that intricate wood work that
there is no way to duplicate now days.

It also still has gas line connections in the bedrooms that were used with
those old gas fired heaters. It has been upgraded to central heat and air and
has 2 units. One up and one down. So that is a plus.

There is a back porch off the kitchen that has been enclosed. The room on that
has been or is currently leaking as I see a soft spot in the floor and a
corresponding rotter spot in the ceiling above. The strange thing is one of the
outside units for the ac is mounted up there, seems that needs to be relocated
down to the ground. The bedroom that is above this area has one of those doors
to nowhere that opens out onto this porch. So there used to be a walk out
balcony on the roof of said porch.

I'm probably going to have the wife show it to me again and take some photos
for you all to see for curiosity. In our little town there used to be a lot of
money here and the town is full of big old houses, some bigger than this one. A
lot of the are real turds that are close to needing to be torn down. Others
people have fixed up real nice. This one seems to be on the edge.

I love old and big, I really love the wood work and details in this house. It's
amazing how well built old houses are. Do you think a house built today will be
standing in 70 years? 100 years? Hell a little wind blows such as a baby f0

Re: [MBZ] Tars

2017-05-30 Thread clay via Mercedes
I was not in the market for brand new rubber for Allen, who had severely dry
rotted tires. My favorite PnP has set up a separate wheel/tire operation with
quality rubber and rims. The prices are pretty good. I paid $200 for four
Yokohamas that they mounted and balanced. There was a set of AMG rims for $199
that I really had to swallow and not purchase as well.

The other yards are a bit more liberal about the standards and quality of tires
on offer, with pricing commensurate. The tire are sold unmounted, with a tail
light warrantee.

[MBZ] Blue Light special

2017-05-30 Thread clay via Mercedes
After taking Mom to visit Dad’s resting place, I gathered a few more HF items
to make my painting learning curve better. Then I used the rest of the
sunlight to prep Polei for lights.

I kept opening the tin of bondo and then closing it up, as I was jumping ahead
of the many steps prior to application. The sunroof got bungled last fall when
I did the "stupid" try to open the sunroof while it was popped. No idea what
went wrong, but that really does not matter.

I had plans to stick the wires for the gumballs out the seals on the roof
instead of making holes. I had two options for light. A single middle light
or a pair at the sides. The middle would have been fine and I had it, but that
may have been less period correct. The two light system calls for a light bar,
which is more angular than what is available on the secondary market, to match
standard examples for a late 1980’s vehicle. I figured that there may not be
significant standardization for lighting, as it might have been transitional
and each agency probably did its own thing. I finally went with the pair of
dome lights.

Lamps are wired up and I placed them on the roof, fed the wire through the gap
in the roof seal and then stuffed a similarly sized magnet on the underside of
the roof at each position to hold the lights in place at speed. I had to do a
bit of rust remediation along the edges of the sunroof and then finally got the
bondo prepared and gooped in. After letting it set up some, I used glazing
putty to fine tune the surface. I had to let it cure, and gave it a decent
sanding this morning. It needed some more glazing to deal with the shrinkage.

If weather holds out, I should be able to get a few coats of primer down, a
spot of sanding, and then topcoat.

Thanks for asking.
Nothing worthy just yet. Been focused on putting up the new shop, and all
the prep work for that [engineering, permits, etc, etc.] It is 120' x 70'
with 14' eve height. All the ground work is now done for that. Leveled 3
acres while I had the machinery on site to prep for the other 4 buildings
at the same time.

Once it's up, will be on the bus project pretty much full time so should
produce a flood of progress pics then
Stand by ... Mercedes bus to come.. ;))) Then the 82 300CD restoration,
then all the other projects...

Temps don’t exceed 100F here. For that matter, it has never reached 100F in
Tampa and most of Florida since they started keeping records of temperatures.

And my W126 is black. Doesn’t seem to make a bit of difference to me. I get
45F vent temperatures, it’s plenty cool inside.

Looks mildly thrashed for its age with the rust spot and tired upholstery, but
they’re not that far off the mark.

Worst model year you could choose, though. I’ve seen a lot of these as toast

2017-05-30 Thread MG via Mercedes
It could be. I've had that showing on the Toyota for something
like 5 or 6 years now after it rolled. They repaired everything
but the light came on about 5-6 months after that. I've replaced
the the cap and it didn't help so it is probably the hoses
somewhere at the tank. I gave up trying to find it and just left
it. Hasn't caused any problems.

Donald Snook via Mercedes wrote:

check the gas cap. I know that's a common fault for some people. But, I
checked it and my gas cap was on tight. I took it off and put it back on
again. But, the light is still on. I took it on a 100 mile round trip thinking
it might have to reset after so many cycles/miles. It is still on.

Could the gas cap be bad?

Run 110v down to the pond to a 12v battery with a battery charger? Easier to
push than to pull I think. We had a 110v pump up at the pond once that could
suck that high but it took a lot of priming to get it to do so.
Theres maybe an 18' elevation change from the pond to the camp, we'll want to
go up to the garage so another 10' or so...

[MBZ] Very nice 126

This looks pretty nice. If I was in the market for a 126, I would be all over
this.

Dan, are you still looking for a 126?

Re: [MBZ] Poosing the Paints

2017-05-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You guys are doing this all wrong if it’s taking you more than 45 minutes to an
hour to clay bar a whole car. In most cases I’m done in 30 minutes.

Knead the clay into a flat piece about 2” x 3”. Spray down an area about 2’ x
2’ on the roof of the car, for example. Just wet it, it doesn’t have to be
soaking.

With the clay flat on the surface, move it back and forth the long dimension of
the car with your fingers flat on the clay, moving from the center to the
outside or vice versa. Doesn’t matter where you start. You don’t have to
apply pressure, just make sure as much of the clay is in contact with the
surface as possible. If you feel the clay dragging or catching on the finish,
you need more lubricant - just give it a spritz where it’s dragging to wet the
surface down more.

When you have finished the area, flip the clay over and use the remaining clean
side to do the next section. When you’re done, fold the clay over onto itself
several times and knead it out into another flat piece to expose a clean
surface.

You should be able to do the roof with four turns, that is, only having to
fold/knead the clay twice.

You can form the clay to fit in between trim or narrow areas of the paint.
I’ll also run it along the edges of seals and weatherstripping where they meet
the painted surfaces as well.

If the clay is dirty looking, fold it over several times, knead it out, make
another flat piece and go at it.

Vertical surfaces usually don’t benefit that much from a clay bar, as they
don’t accumulate near as much dirt as a horizontal surface does. Unless a
finish is really, really dirty, I rarely clay bar the doors or fenders. I’ll
hit one spot and see if I can tell a difference to determine whether or not to
do it.

You can run your fingers across the (dry) surface of the paint on a “before”
and “after” area of the car and you’ll know exactly how well it did. There’s
also what’s known as the ‘plastic bag test” that uses a plastic bag from
WalMart or any other retailer that uses the disposable plastic bags to run over
the surface, as they will “catch” on a dirty surface as well. I’ve found my
fingers do just fine and I don’t have to worry about tossing them in the trash
or recycling them when I’m done.

But, the bad guys mostly kill or wound each other don't they? No
shortage of bad guys so most folks are not anxious to pay for more

And, Chicago area has, what, 8 to 10 million people so a half dozen on a

Re: [MBZ] OT: Solar update

2017-05-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The hassle of getting out the generator, getting it started, pumping the water,
putting it away... We could set up a permanent generator station and in fact we
probably will at some point but this should work with less energy input.
If you change your mindset from a normal household pump this idea works better,
a lower capacity pump running longer to fill a larger tank that then gravity
feeds. The goal here is not to have water running out of a tap but to be able
to fill buckets from the porch and just bring them into the camp.
Oh I should also mention that we're pulling from the pond, not a well so we
don't need the pump output we would otherwise.

Why not just run a small generator when you need to pump water? Should be
simpler than running a 115v motor from solar/batteries.

Back in the 50's cottagers on Lake of the Woods had water towers with
big galvanized tanks on top (or had the tank on the roof of the
cottage). They would use a gasoline engine powered pump to fill the tank
periodically from the lake and then gravity would provide water in the
cottage sink and shower etc. A further advantage was that the water got
quite warm on a summer day so not much heating was required if one
showered in the evening rather than the morning.

[MBZ] Way beyond OT - Replacing CA avocado groves with coffee plantations

2017-05-30 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I just had to share this mind-boggling little news clip.
MEET THE CALIF. COFFEE CRAZE

Southern California avocado groves are finding economic revitalization in
coffee.

Farmers are confronting a problem of aging avocado trees in the region that
are producing less fruit. At the same time, many also are noting the ways
climate change is threatening to damage coffee crops in traditional export
areas. Southern California-grown coffee, many believe, is an answer to both
problems.

"You have colder nights and warmer days pretty consistently, and the
temperature rarely gets close to freezing," Willem Boot, a consultant to
the coffee industry, said of the California southern coast climate, which
he said is ideal for growing the beans.

Even Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Jason Mraz is getting in on
the California coffee craze. Mraz, who planted about 2,500 coffee bushes on
a 1,700-acre farm currently serving as an avocado grove in San Diego, said
he expects to produce his first significant coffee crop in about two years.

"I started my career in a coffeehouse, and I love the coffee culture," he
said. "I knew right away that California coffee could be special"

2017-05-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
$10k is psycho money for that car in its current condition.

It’s been resprayed, at least around the radiator support, as you can see where
there are parts that have been masked off. They would be standard black if
they were original. Hinges and sills are correct, so whoever repainted it
either did a very thorough job or that’s the original color.

Not a bad looking car, but things like the corrosion on the battery terminals
tells me this has not been maintained as well as the seller might suggest.

A buddy of mine had a scheme to move this old church from Sullivans
Island to Mt. Plastic (where Max lives), had the structure movers and a
huge barge all lined up, then for some reasons not entirely clear
(various Town Fathers got upset maybe) he decided not to do it and built
onto it instead, turning the church into Castle Mugdock. He spared no
expense on the work, it is amazing craftsmanship throughout. I think
him to be mildly insane but in his mind it made perfect sense, and was
quite intriguing from an engineering standpoint.

it is quite a place, you can rent it for a week or a month or buy it if
you want, he would entertain offers. It is an awesome party venue, he
hosts plays and debates and various other things there in the "great
room." Another friend did the stone carving for the fireplace (it will
run you out of the place when it is cranked up).

I'm presuming no insulation anywhere you can do blow-in for that.
If windows are also original you would probably want at least new

sashes with double ("bulletproof") glass, those can go into the
existing frames and work very nicely. And whatever the foundation
issues are, those can likely be addressed fairly easily with some
footers and jacks as long as there is not a lot of rot in the
sills and joists, we have foundation services all over the place
here that do that sort of thing.

If I was doing it I'd probably be looking at $25k in materials
easy for the bathrooms/kitchen, wiring and plumbing might add up.
It would be easy to dump $100k into it if you wanted a nice place,

but the market probably suggests cheaping out and basically
abandoning a beautiful old house to turn it into a cheap rental or
something. Kinda like a cheap Mercedes...

Not knowing Mao's skills and tenacity, it might be beyond a
weekender kind of project, which is a shame. If Mao is capable of
doing some serious work on it (like the electrical and plumbing)
then maybe you could work something out, buy materials and pay him
some rate to work on it.

Re: [MBZ] OT Old house projects

2017-05-30 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That is a gorgeous old house. Reminds me of my second fixer-upper, an
old Victorian. I have no idea what a "fixed-up" value would be on it
but it looks like 2 bathrooms and a kitchen would need to be upgraded.
The rest looks mostly cosmetic, stripping, paint, etc. and sand the
floors and refinish. I'm sure the wiring is ancient, the plumbing too,
so that would need to be upgraded. These are all spendy things. How's
the roof and paint? I'm presuming no insulation anywhere you can do
blow-in for that. If windows are also original you would probably want
at least new sashes with double ("bulletproof") glass, those can go into
the existing frames and work very nicely. And whatever the foundation
issues are, those can likely be addressed fairly easily with some
footers and jacks as long as there is not a lot of rot in the sills and
joists, we have foundation services all over the place here that do that
sort of thing.

If I was doing it I'd probably be looking at $25k in materials easy for
the bathrooms/kitchen, wiring and plumbing might add up. It would be
easy to dump $100k into it if you wanted a nice place, but the market
probably suggests cheaping out and basically abandoning a beautiful old
house to turn it into a cheap rental or something. Kinda like a cheap
Mercedes...

Not knowing Mao's skills and tenacity, it might be beyond a weekender
kind of project, which is a shame. If Mao is capable of doing some
serious work on it (like the electrical and plumbing) then maybe you
could work something out, buy materials and pay him some rate to work on it.

I think that if it is the gas cap, and you have tightened it, you may
have to drive it several times before the system resets itself.

I was scrolling thru local listings the other day out of curiosity on the wifes
MLS login. Anyway, I saw this house in town and it looked interesting. I had
her show it to me today. It is going to need a LOT of work but it has a lot of
potential. It is really a neat old house with impressive wood work and detail
you do not see anymore. Alot or most of the wood along the edge of the roof
which attaches to the ends of the roof studs (not sure what you call it) as
well as sofet (sp) is rotted and will require replacement. Floors are uneven
in some spots as you would expect in an old house and that does not really
concern me much. All of the windows in the house are the old original wood
framed windows and have storm windows installed on the outside. These are
these big old windows you dont see in houses anymore. Wife says they all need
to be replaced but I told her these unlike new windows can be repaired, or so I
think. Just need to to have all the old paint scraped out, remo

ve the old putty that holds the glass in and replace. No they are probably not
as efficient as new windows. On one side of the house they have 2 or 3 huge
concrete pillars/supports of some sort which butt up against the foundation,
almost sort of like buttresses on a cathedral. The only thing I can figure is
the foundation started pushing out like it does on old houses and these were
installed to hold it in. I have seen other old houses where they have drilled
holes in the header plate or foundation with cables stretched across from one
side of the house to the other attached to metal plates on the outside of the
house which can then be tightened as needed to adjust the foundation. The other
side of the house looks like its going to need attention as there is a section
above the concrete/brick foundation that is starting to move out. Obviously
will need a lot of cosmetics as well. Since its a forclosure in need of a lot
of work I thought about offering no more than $15k, and t
urning it into a long term project.

Crazy probably but interesting yes.

Possibly.

Another reason could be that the system isn't sealed or is leaking elsewhere.

The W140s will do this, and if it's not the cap it's a leak in the lines back
to the tank from the recirculation system or a bad valve that controls vacuum
into that system.

My local Craigslist has a couple of places that are always advertising used
tires for cheep. I've looked at their ads and they seem to have a good range
of brands and sizes that are pretty reasonable based on the brand/type/amount
of tread depth.

They are physical businesses, not in the best of neighborhoods, but
nevertheless seem to offer some good deals.

I am not keen about tire retailers, as I have often held them up alongside used
car dealers and real estate agents.

That being said, I found a really good Tires Plus, a national chain, near my
house that has a pretty serious following in the local BMW community. I’ve
found that the tire place does a good job recommending various tires based on
application and consideration for the owner’s concerns.

Case in point:

When I changed the SL500 over to 2003 SLK 17” staggered wheels, they worked
with me to find a reasonably priced set of low profile tires that had good
handling and wear characteristics. Tires in this size range are limited,
especially for the rear wheels, and while I ended up dropping over $1,000 for
the set of four it’s been two years and we’ve been very pleased with them.

They also do excellent alignments with the proper tools (spreader bar).

I look up what they offer online and then go into the store and talk with them
when I’m looking for tires. If my choice is questionable for whatever reason
they’ll tell me why and offer alternatives that are similar.

What about the power-factor controllers for inductive loads?

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 138, Issue 228

I thought the conventional wisdom was a normal person can afford to drive a 12
Cyl. MB. That's what my mechanic always told me.

Re: [MBZ] Poosing the Paints

2017-05-30 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
I second the suggestion to use a Clay Bar. I have tried it on a several cars
and it made a HUGE difference. The paint afterward is smooth and slick and
this was even before putting any kind of wax on it. All the warnings about
using a clay bar are very important. Divide your bar into several smaller
pieces so if you drop it on the ground, you throw it away! Make sure you have
some sort of lubricant -- whether it’s a specific clay bar solution or just
some nice soapy water. It takes a long time, but it is well worth it!

Wash it, clay bar it, then put a good coat of quality wax on it and be done.

The extreme finish recoveries I’ve done are outliers. It’s very, very rare
that you’ll ever need to do something that extreme.
