I just looked at my national Craigslist search at lunch. And out of maybe 300
ads for a Mercedes between 1959 and 1967 I got over 20 of the Gazelles in the

Good point. Who needs permits for outbuildings when you have a 14 mile
driveway? Around here, if you have 40 acres and claim the outbuilding is for
your farm, there's no requirement for a permit to build, but you might need an
electrical permit to wire it for lights etc.

You just reminded me of the light switches my grandfather used when he built a

[MBZ] Bad news for Rich, great news for Fred and Curt

2017-05-31 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Southern states face summer without peachesPublished: Wednesday, May 31,
2017

A warm winter and a late spring cold snap have devastated the peach crop
across the southern United States.

Georgia's peach yield may be 25 percent of what it was last year, according
to the Department of Agriculture.

In South Carolina, which trails only California in peach production, the
crop may be even worse compared with last year.

"It's just really, really bad," said Juan Carlos Melgar, an assistant
professor of pomology at Clemson University. "Historically bad."

Workers, many of whom are from Mexico, are being laid off or having their
contracts cut short.

Much of the damage came from a three-day freeze in March that wiped out the
blossoms and early fruit.

The New England peach crop, however, looks great this year (Kim Severson, *New
York Times*
,
May 30). *— NB*

Thats actually not a terrible idea. I've looked at some micro-hydro
setups on ebay that I could produce a little power with. Again under
the theory that 1-2 gallons an hour 24 hours a day would probably be
plenty.
I'm thinking a 1/4hp 110v pump ought to do the job easy enough. This
fall I'll start thinking about how/where to mount it. We've got a hand
pump down there already, I should be able to tap off its intake. Maybe
build a box that mounts to the 4x4s its on.

OK, then you need a bigger dam with hydroelectric to run your pump to

I like Mitch's idea of solar on the pump house but its another
panel/charge controller and battery. Better to use 110v, its not a
huge run, maybe 100 feet...

Re: [MBZ] OT: Solar update

2017-05-31 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
We were in Argentina staying at this little hotel and they had a small
turbine in a stream that ran past the place. They had a small dam (like
just a foot high, the stream was pretty steep and ran a good amount) up
about 150ft from the little turbine house and ran a 4" PVC pipe down to
it. Maybe 6ft of head on it? That thing spun like crazy. I'm not sure
how much they were getting off it or if they had grid power too, but it
looked way cool.

Thats actually not a terrible idea. I've looked at some micro-hydro setups on
ebay that I could produce a little power with. Again under the theory that 1-2
gallons an hour 24 hours a day would probably be plenty.
I'm thinking a 1/4hp 110v pump ought to do the job easy enough. This fall I'll
start thinking about how/where to mount it. We've got a hand pump down there
already, I should be able to tap off its intake. Maybe build a box that mounts
to the 4x4s its on.

Rear ended?  My 200D was one of the first to hit the shores of the US
of A.  It was sold in Nov of 1965 as a 66 model. It does not have the
fender turn signals.  I'd do a VIN check for Mfg. date.  A 65 should be
a 190Dc in the USA.  66 are all 200D.  I have never seen a holdover 65
sold as a 66.  It could be a Yuro import, not imported by MBNA.  Check
the engine number too.  Both are 621, but the subtypes are different.

Looks nice, but something does not look right.

Hmm, may be a hassle to deal with winterizing, have to design it so easy to
de-water for the winter.

I found out the same thing several years ago. My old house had knob and tube
wiring in the detached garage. They agreed to insure the house but not the
garage. But, they did allow me to replace the knob and tube within 30 days and
then they insured it also. It wasn't so bad because the previous owner had
replaced the wiring from the house to the garage, so I only had to replace the

[MBZ] GM in hot water over diesel emissions

2017-05-31 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
General Motors under scrutiny for diesel emissions

Published: Friday, May 26, 2017[image: General Motors showroom]

General Motors Co. is denying claims that its heavy-duty diesel pickup
trucks cheated on emissions tests. Jose Ongpin/Flickr

Auto giant General Motors is now facing the same accusations as other
automakers about possible extra emissions from its diesel vehicles.

The same law firm that represented owners of Volkswagen and Fiat Chrysler
diesel vehicles, Hagens Berman, filed a class-action lawsuit
 in federal
court in Detroit yesterday against the automaker.

The complaint accuses General Motors of exceeding legal emissions limits in
2011-16 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra heavy-duty pickup trucks. Around
705,000 vehicles on the road could contain the faulty emission control
systems, according to the complaint.

General Motors is denying claims that it used "defeat devices." Share
prices of the company dropped more than 3 percent on the news yesterday but
have partly recovered today.

"These claims are baseless, and we will vigorously defend ourselves," said
Dan Flores, a GM spokesman. He added that the Duramax Diesel Chevrolet
Silverado and GMC Sierra comply with U.S. EPA and California Air Resources
Board emissions regulations.

General Motors joins Volkswagen AG and at least four other automakers —
Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler AG, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, Peugeot SA
and Renault SA — whose diesel vehicles have been scrutinized by regulators
or consumers. This week, the Justice Department sued Fiat Chrysler over
accusations that it used defeat devices on its diesel trucks, seeking to
join an existing class-action lawsuit.

The law firm behind the General Motors complaint did its own on-road
emissions testing to find that the trucks emit higher pollution at
temperatures below 68 degrees or above 86 degrees. The excess emissions
could reach four or five times allowable limits, according to the suit.

EPA and ARB have not yet made any move to further test the diesel trucks or
take any action against General Motors.

Brian Johnson, a financial analyst at Barclays Capital, wrote that the
lawsuit could be "fishing" for a settlement from GM in a research note to
clients.

"We'd only know that it's more serious if the EPA steps in," he wrote.

John German of the International Council on Clean Transportation said more
lab testing would be required to determine whether GM did deceive
regulators or exceed legal emissions limits.

"It's still unclear to me whether this is a genuine violation or something
that's conceivably part of a normal operating standard, but there's
certainly major questions being raised by the data," he said.

The increased scrutiny of diesel vehicles since Volkswagen was found to be
deliberately misleading regulators on emissions has largely focused on the
light-duty vehicles marketed as using "clean" diesel. Car companies have
increasingly introduced these vehicles in the past decade in part to meet
stringent standards — but they make up only a tiny fraction of total sales.

The use of diesel has been more common for a longer time in the heavy-duty
sector, which can range from large pickups like the Silverado and Sierra
identified in the complaint to 18-wheelers and garbage trucks.

That means regulators and heavy-duty manufacturers have presumably had more
time and experience to develop technologies that meet the standards, German
said.

In the late 1990s, EPA sued manufacturers of heavy-duty engines for using
defeat devices leading to nitrogen oxide emissions three times the
allowable level on highways. At the time, it was the largest Clean Air Act
enforcement action in history. Seven manufacturers of heavy-duty diesel
engines, comprising 95 percent of the U.S. heavy-duty diesel engine market,
spent more than $1 billion to settle the charges in 1998.

there are a lot of abandoned vineyards because they found out a few

Not sure what it is like where you are, but here, if one buys an older
house with out dated wiring or plumbing, the insurance companis will
normally take it on but require evidence that things have been brought
up to date within a short time - 30 days? Knob and tube is bad and so
are fuse panels. They want breaker panels installed. Galvanized plumbing
is bad. Swap to copper or pex required.

house were dealing with lath and plaster, wiring that had been updated 3-4

I love old and big, I really love the wood work and details in this house. It's
amazing how well built old houses are. Do you think a house built today will be
standing in 70 years? 100 years? Hell a little wind blows such as a baby f0
tornado and they are toast.

not as efficient as new windows. On one side of the house they have 2 or 3
huge concrete pillars/supports of some sort which butt up against the
foundation, almost sort of like buttresses on a cathedral. The only thing I
can figure is the foundation started pushing out like it does on old houses and
these were installed to hold it in. I have seen other old houses where they
have drilled holes in the header plate or foundation with cables stretched
across from one side of the house to the other attached to metal plates on the
outside of the house which can then be tightened as needed to adjust the
foundation. The other side of the house looks like its going to need attention
as there is a section above the concrete/brick foundation that is starting to
move out. Obviously will need a lot of cosmetics as well. Since its a
forclosure in need of a lot of work I thought about offering no more than $15k,
and
turning it into a long term project.

The one that took me the longest was a white Mercury Grand Marquis. I think
white paint is deceptive. It doesn't show dirt. But, I did have to do the
sides because I could definitely feel dirt in the paint. Maybe this car was
especially dirty. When I clayed my BMW, it didn't take near as long, probably
because it had been taken care of by the previous owner.

Knead the clay into a flat piece about 2” x 3”. Spray down an area about 2’ x
2’ on the roof of the car, for example. Just wet it, it doesn’t have to be
soaking.

With the clay flat on the surface, move it back and forth the long dimension of
the car with your fingers flat on the clay, moving from the center to the
outside or vice versa. Doesn’t matter where you start. You don’t have to
apply pressure, just make sure as much of the clay is in contact with the
surface as possible. If you feel the clay dragging or catching on the finish,
you need more lubricant - just give it a spritz where it’s dragging to wet the
surface down more.

When you have finished the area, flip the clay over and use the remaining clean
side to do the next section. When you’re done, fold the clay over onto itself
several times and knead it out into another flat piece to expose a clean
surface.

You should be able to do the roof with four turns, that is, only having to
fold/knead the clay twice.

You can form the clay to fit in between trim or narrow areas of the paint.
I’ll also run it along the edges of seals and weatherstripping where they meet
the painted surfaces as well.

If the clay is dirty looking, fold it over several times, knead it out, make
another flat piece and go at it.

Vertical surfaces usually don’t benefit that much from a clay bar, as they
don’t accumulate near as much dirt as a horizontal surface does. Unless a
finish is really, really dirty, I rarely clay bar the doors or fenders. I’ll
hit one spot and see if I can tell a difference to determine whether or not to
do it.

You can run your fingers across the (dry) surface of the paint on a “before”
and “after” area of the car and you’ll know exactly how well it did. There’s
also what’s known as the ‘plastic bag test” that uses a plastic bag from
WalMart or any other retailer that uses the disposable plastic bags to run over
the surface, as they will “catch” on a dirty surface as well. I’ve found my
fingers do just fine and I don’t have to worry about tossing them in the trash
or recycling them when I’m done.

I have pretty much quit eating avocados because I have learned that the
big demand for them has incentivized Mexican farmers to cut down the
monarch forest to plant avo trees. Boo.

MEET THE CALIF. COFFEE CRAZE

Southern California avocado groves are finding economic revitalization in
coffee.

Farmers are confronting a problem of aging avocado trees in the region that
are producing less fruit. At the same time, many also are noting the ways
climate change is threatening to damage coffee crops in traditional export
areas. Southern California-grown coffee, many believe, is an answer to both
problems.

Knob and tube is quite safe, wonder why they have that policy? I guess
it is really old so maybe insulation issues, but since the conductors
are separated it is not much of an issue as far as shorting.

According to the EPA, the whole continent is under water, thus subject
to WOTUS, in spite of the fact that there is NO law stating such.

G Mann via Mercedes

Permit for grading and drainage, because the EPA has dictated any water
shed area has to have an engineered study before the drainage can be
modified... [go figure... the government in action.. ]

Then... because the building covers ground by virtue of having a roof...
the run off has to be calculated and accounted for when it rains [The
government didn't get the memo that this is the desert and it only rains
0.20 inches per year... ]

Then... because it has a flush toilet.. which goes into a septic
system.. I

have to have an "Approved Plan and Installation for Septic"

The list goes on and on... to date.. a bit more than $8,000 in permit
fees and another $12,000 in engineering fees to produce drawings with
engineers registered stamp for the various elements of the project.

All for a place to build Mercedes and restore them... and other
projects...
