I once had a car battery that went open circuit at about -20 F. It would not
crank but I could jump start it and it would run thereafter. Maybe it could

[MBZ] Very loud knocking noise in my W123 300TD

2017-07-13 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Loudest in first gear under load. It's as if someone is banging underneath
with a hammer. Tends to diminish and go away as I move up through the
gears. I crawled underneath and checked for loose exhaust pipe but
everything seemed tight. The noise appears to come from the rear. This
has been going on for some time, but got really loud just today.

Any ideas on what might be the issue?

[MBZ] AC goodness

2017-07-13 Thread clay via Mercedes
I have been slowly trying to figure out how to make ice cold in my old cars.
The r107 ate its compressor, but with the roof down, who cares anyway. I just
wish the belt had not been hooked up, so that it tried to make the compressor
function for the past five years. Probably would have been functional when I
was ready to make the car have AC.

The two w126 have not had functional AC since they came to me. The SDL I was
not sure it worked, but it was being winter. The SD came to me in mid-winter
and had no belt to the compressor until this week. All the cars have had the
vacuum applied and been sucked dry. The bigger question was do I go with new
freezy, or keep the old tech?I decided that after finding I would need
1.5kg of goo per car, I went with the lowest cost option. No need to blow $30
or more per 8oz can on real R12. I went with the bottom feeder canned air
option. I picked up two cases of duster from Costco.

The can tapper arrived today along with the top tapper. Now I can hook up to
the manifold and fill the system. I had wanted to use the real AC Delco 525
viscocity oil, but ended up with an ester in a can with R12. The system calls
for 8oz of oil. I suspect the systems have some oil, so this stuff should be
ok for initial top off of the system.

Right now, the SD is being tested for holding vacuum over night. I will
attempt the fill in the morning if it shows an airtight system.

It was less. Considerably less.
I picked one up today. It was already out, so no effort was required. It has an
"ESP"switch, and not "W-S".It does looks replaceable.  Also, there is a section
of plastic broken off the bottom. ‎
I'm sure with a piece from the old switch glued in place, it would be good
enough for some of us. Probably not up to "Martha " standards though...
Pictures here .

I'll ship it to you if you want it, no charge. You can tear it apart, break it,
whatever.  It was less than $10. I made a very good haul today, and I'm going
back tomorrow. I am also going to stop at another yard on my way to work
tomorrow afternoon. If you'd like, I can see if I can find a better specimen

2017-07-13 Thread clay via Mercedes
I appreciate that. I am not expecting to need to use it on the SDL, which is
probably the newest car I plan to own for the very foreseeable future. I have
a set of old Dell craptops that might work for it. One is the benz manuals on
disk machine that does not work with the cheep chinee USB boroscope and uses
winblows 7.

I would only need to use it once on the W220 to make it go away. Once it
sells, I have nothing newer than the 86 SDL. At this juncture I have one
garage, and too many cars parked on the street. IF #1 boy returns his W140 to
Seattle, I could maybe use the thing, but I expect the car will be sent to the
knackers in ND

Simple test for battery condition Put a load tester on it and watch the
meter... good visual indication of battery condition...

I strongly suggest he ask to see that done before shelling out the price of
a new battery.

The problem description does NOT suggest a battery with low voltage.. It
cranks and starts... it cranks to re-start [even if it does not start]...
listen to crank speed..
Tired batteries sound tired on crank loads...

No mention of that issue so far in text elaboration of the issue.. S...
"Sell the sucker a new battery", then we'll throw parts at it till
something works... school of thought, seems to me.

They probably fixed something simple that was either free or very cheap, needed
to make money somehow so they installed a new battery, which it might have

The shop called my brother and said it was the battery. I agree with others
that said that doesn't make sense because when it died it would crank. He
would have to wait a while and then it would start. My brother asked them to
close the hood and start it and let it idle. When he did that before, it would
stall and not restart until it cooled off. They tried that and it never
stalled. It kept idling without any problem. I know low voltage can do weird
things, but I don't understand how the battery can be good enough later to
start after cooling down.He is going to pick it up and drive it around his
neighborhood. Earlier in the week he couldn't make it all the way around his
neighborhood without it stalling. So, I guess we will see.

You could probably scrounge a computer given the resources you have in the

Realize, too, that it works on cars as old as 2nd Gen W126 chassis and others

Re: [MBZ] OT: Land Yacht problem

2017-07-13 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
HA! I think you might be right. How many current mechanics have worked on a
car with a carb? I worked at an Oldsmobile and Honda dealership in the 90's.
We had two mechanics who were proficient in working on carbs. One of the older
guys (who was by far the best mechanic) was a wizard with carburetors. I'm
sure he made a ton of money working on them in the 70's and 80's. I hope the
shop my brother uses has somebody who knows enough to work on the car. He
took his 71 Grand Prix, 77 Thunderbird, and 83 Cadillac to them and he was
pleased. I think he is just dealing with an old car that sat for a long time
and needs some minor issues sorted out.

Don,

Ask your brother to count the number of missing teeth in the mouth of the
mechanic. I think on a car this old, at least 50% of the teeth should be
missing by now. If not, the mechanic is too young and doesn't have a clue...

Yes. The one that Tom had was a great car. I don't recall exactly what
year but it was very nice and in good condition.
Unfortunatly, he drove over a chunk of concrete in a construction zone
and the insurance company wrote it off because it damaged the oilpan etc.
He has since seen it again. Someone bought it from the insurance aution
and repaired it. Tom is not mechanical and would not have done that himself.
He hunted down another and got a newer one which is nice but not as nice
as the previous one in my opinion. I don't care for the newer body style.

I liked the one that looked more like the Mercedes of an earlier time.
Cannot say I like the new Mercedes style either. Don't need to worry as
I won't be buying one!

Run it until it exhibits the problem and then check to see if there is spark.
If there is no spark, then put a cold pack or a bag of ice on the electronic
ignition control box and see if it comes back to life faster than when you just
let it sit for half an hour.

It sounds like it has to be something that is being affected by heat. It starts
up and runs well when it is cold but gets unhappy after it is run long enough
to get warmed up.

You could likely check fuel delivery and pressure fairly easy on that too. It
is not like fuel injection where there is high pressure. If the tank is rusty
etc then it might be plugging up the filters.
Should be easy enough to disconnect the fuel line at the carb and crank it to
see how much fuel is coming out of the pipe.

Mercedes sedan.
I liked it. He has since moved to a newer one and I don't care for the styling
on it.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Land Yacht problem

2017-07-13 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
He ended up driving it to his mechanic. Its only 1 mile from his house. He
popped the hood (but kept the safety latch on) and drove it like that thinking
that the extra airflow would keep it cooler. He made it.

The shop told him this morning they thought it was a bad battery.I guess
the theory is when it gets hot, it starts having low electrical and things get
funky. I think that sounds a little too simple.

HA! I know what you mean. They are a little boring. I like the newer body
style much better. I have a friend with a 2003 Altima. It's the 2.5 S and it
is boring. BUT, he is the cheapest human being on the planet. 4 years ago, he
had over 150,000 miles. He is still driving it now. I'm sure he has at least
225,000 on it now. He was diligent about oil changes, but not much else. He
just drove it. In the first 150,000 miles the only thing I remember him doing
was replacing the serpentine belt and had a seal leaking power steering fluid
that cost a couple hundred bucks when it was all done. They are boring, but if
you don't mind a soul-less reliable machine they are hard to beat.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Land Yacht problem

2017-07-13 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
When my last carbureted car had a bad choke pull-off, I needed three feet to
keep it running at a stop light until the electric choke warmed up and got the
choke plate out of the way. (Chevy Citation pedals were arranged so that it was
impossible to heel and toe the brake and throttle)
But, once rolling, the car was quite driveable.
The choke prevented low speed running, the vacuum pull-off was supposed to open
the choke in high vacuum low throttle situations.

If the problem entirely goes away when the engine is warm, it's probably the
choke pull-off, and warming it up to turn the choke off fixes it.

Mitch.

You could probably scrounge a computer given the resources you have in the
neighborhood. I paid $300 for the multiplexer, cables and the software on an
external USB drive. While I understand your position, I can assure you that in
the time I've had my DAS system it's more than paid for itself in time saved
and ability to fix things, such as your current W220 situation.

Realize, too, that it works on cars as old as 2nd Gen W126 chassis and others
as well.
