The dames insco is footing the bill direct. I do not have comprehensive on the
car, so USAA will not bother trying to make me whole. Amica has the burden for
the car. USAA is going to deal with my medical needs.

I want the second opinion, so that I can see if I can just take the check and
be on my way, or do I really need to have a shop involved to do the more in
depth repairs that would crop up with damage to a unibody car.

[MBZ] OT - treating hard water

2017-08-24 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I had to replace the dead lower heater element in our electric water heater
today - 5 years old and could hardly get it out of the tank.

The sales person at the local plumbing supply house said I need a "water
conditioner", not a water softener, though he wasn't clear on the
difference, and the item he had to sell me was labeled a softener.

Do any of you have experience or know about the non-salt "water
conditioners" such as these?

So if you got an estimate why didn’t the adjuster just cut you a check?

That’s what my insurance company does. Then you take the car to any of their
approved repair facilities, or one of your choice, or just pocket the $$ and do
the work yourself or live with the damage. If the bill is more they pay the
difference.

2017-08-24 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I don't know if the bumpers appears in 73 or 74, depends on manufacture date I
think -- my 280SE had small ones, and I don't think MB ever put the big ones
on, just dropped the model by the time they were required. Mine was
manufactured in April, I think anything manufatured after August 1st (the
semi-official "introduction" date for cars in the US) had to be collision
resistant.

The were definitely ugly, but the previous ones were pretty non-functional.

The adjuster came out and took a look at Allen. He found more damage than just
the bumper. Seems she came deep under the car and bent some of the sheet metal
under the plate. Shifted the gaps for the trunk as well. His estimate was
around $1380. If the body shop finds more damage they will pay more.

I took it to the shop I like about an hour ago. They said they can not work on
it because they do not use single stage paint, just water based. They also
could not match colors. They recommended a shop 15 miles away. The car drives
ok for now.

Do I really need to address the out of spec sheet metal? I might be able to
source a bumper and shock to make that stuff better.

I am not yet able to bend over or crawl around under the car due to the head
injury messing with balance. I have yet to see the extent of underside damage.

2017-08-24 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
How big is the fuel tank? That will affect the speed with which the
needle on the guage drops.
I had an old Chevy truck with the tank in the cab. Small tank. I could
watch the needle go down.
My truck has a big tank. I can go a long way on a tank and it takes a
long time for the needle to get down to half.

I don't believe so.
I'll know for sure by the weekend.
It's a 2003 with ABS 4MATIC and ESP, but if it goes bonkers I can turn ESP
off.

Right now, my biggest concern is the way the fuel gauge keeps dropping.
The E320 4MATIC was rated 27mpg hwy, I could get 30 driving around the
countryside at sub-freeway speeds.
The ML350 was rated 18hwy, and the 3.7L engine turns over 2k at 55mph.
The way the gauge plummets, I'm not even sure I get 18 in rural driving.
I thought the tires might be low, they're at 44psi with green 'nitrogen
inside' valve caps.

2017-08-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A dolly shouldn't put much tongue weight on. The problem with most people is
they don't know how to load a trailer and either put on no tongue weight and
get a trailer that wags or way too much and their headlights point at the sky.
This latter one is exacerbated when combined with a leveling kit on a pickup
truck. Most new pickups are slightly nose down, with a leveling kit and a load
in the bed the headlights point too high...

First, buy a Curt 56146 trailer light converter, it has its own power supply
and does not draw power from the taillight housings, just samples taillight
voltages to tell it what to do. This avoids trouble with the bulb warning light
in the dash. Also, I checked the impedence on the power input, with the turn
signals, brake lights and taillights off, it was 26kOhms, so there's no worry
about battery drain when you aren't using the car (the rear power outlet is
always hot).

Buy a Curt 13018 hitch (3500lb), Draw-Tite 75087 (5000lb) or Reese 44720 (8000lb). I
hoped the Curt would not require cutting away part of the plastic bumper cover, but
I still had to notch it to clear the gusset on the back of the hitch. (less cutting
than the Draw-Tite in the video, which sits higher and requires you to cut a notch
wide enough for the 2" receiver.)

Download these two videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUtq8gvv8jU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTj1GjgeEMY

I don't follow the videos exactly. When they take the bumper off, and then take
the flat panel antenna off the bumper, I just fold the back seat and stick the
bumper in the back with the right end hanging out to keep from pulling the wire.

I made several changes to the wiring video.
They stuck the box in the left taillight recess, then had to extend the wire to
the right taillight. I stuck the box under the bumper cover, and the green wire
was then long enough to reach the right taillight.

They used a self-drilling-tapping sheet metal screw to punch a hole in the body
and secure the ground wire. I fished the white ground wire through the bumper
plastic and secured it with the rightmost bumper plastic holding screw.
Advantage, no holes drilled in my car.

They ran a long wire and an inline fuse holder to the battery, running the hot
wire under the body along the frame. I ran a 5' wire through the bumper to the
right taillight housing, wiggled it through the rubber grommet for the
taillight wiring (so the body is still waterproof behind the taillight), and
used the same sort of blue wiring tap as was used at the taillights to tap into
the red wire at the rear power outlet/lighter socket.
To get access to the wire, I just had to take off the cargo net hook nearest
the outlet, peel back the rubber tailgate gasket, and pull the interior panel
away from the body until I could get my hand in there and unplug (no locking
clip, just unplug it) the wiring from the outlet. The wire is long enough to
pull out the CD changer access door for easy tapping. Now the trailer light
controller has a 20A fused power source, and there aren't any stray wires under
the body.

My one mistake: While I was wishing they hadn't set the wire lengths to force
you to put the unit by the left taillight (because my chosen power supply was
by the right taillight) I didn't think of the solution until just now as I was
writing this up. Instead of driving to town for a spool of 14ga stranded wire
to extend the power input lead, I could have put the unit under the right end
of the bumper, connected the tail and stoplight wires on the right side,
shortened the green turn signal wire, and used the excess green wire to extend
the yellow left turn signal wire over to the left taillight housing. That keeps
the power wire short, and allows you to do the entire install with the wires
that Curt furnished.

Pictures: The first one shows where I attached the converter box with the supplied
double sided tape. You can also see that the white wire is taped to a 3" zip
tie, I used that to fish the green wire over to the right side and to fish the white
ground wire into the bumper cover as I reattached the bumper cover. The second photo
shows how I ran the power wire parallel to the existing wiring harness and slipped
it into the body via the existing rubber seal.

Mitch.

guard the ML and doesn't want to come in the house. After putting about 10oz of
juice in the AC, it's at least possible to take her to Cleveland with me.
Hard to believe the condenser was warped but not leaking after the deer strike.
Now to do something about the wheel bearings on the dolly, one of them is
loose, the other is way loose.
Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] BMW 1973 2002 for over $40K???

2017-08-24 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
73 and 74 are pretty much identical, 72 and earlier have the small bumpers.

Great cars, a good friend of mine had one when we were at IU. Sadly hers had a
"kick me" sign on the back, her mother got rear-ended in in it just before Jan
came to school, and she got rear ended twice after that, always sitting at a
red traffic light. Last one totaled it, sadly.

I drove it a few times, best driving car I've ever been in. Manual steerying,
so parking was a pain, but otherwise just a blast to drive.

Unfortunately, the rust worms ate the vast majority of them, just like all the
other 70's German cars made with Russian steel. My 75 Audi Fox fell apart by
85, too.

[MBZ] They gonna cut me a cheque

2017-08-24 Thread redghost--- via Mercedes
The insco guys are being all accommodating. Allen got a look over by their
adjuster and he thinks the car is worth just enough that it does not need to be
totaled. I am going to get a payment and get to take the car to a body shoppe
to get the bumper replaced, and have somebody hammer out the mess the dame made
of the underside of my trunk. I feel sort of sorry for the body boys who have
to match my rattle can bumper paint (though they did include the clear coat,
which I did apply from a can) and also have to get the splotchy color I
sprayed. They want to put clear on that, but the rest of the car is single
stage and I have held off on clear while I contemplate if I do a respray so it
looks less mangy.

Medico gave me a look over Tuesday. He was in agreement that I would probably
not do the physio if he set it up, and that it really does little to help with
this stuff, as it takes about the same time to heal either way. The attention
does make your tummy feel good though. Just jacks up the medical payout, and I
would not be seeing any of it. I did get a solid bonk on the noggin. Notes I
took while awaiting the doctor visit confirmed his assessment that there was a
concussion. I am keeping an eye out for delayed signs of mental deterioration.
