Re: [MBZ] New Heater Question was foam hose, now lack of heat in foot wells.

2017-12-21 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
On my 82 SD, the plastic levers that operate the foot-well heat flaps failed.
I decided it was too expensive (part$) and too hard (remove whole dash and ac
ducts) to restore to OEM configuration. I used a piece of wood the first few
winters. Later I rigged a piece of mason's twine from the right flap through
an eye in the other flap and back out through the right flap. With the string
slack the flaps blow closed and pulling the string holds them open. Crude but
it works.

Things have been very busy lately. Getting ready for Christmas,
finding a new car, going to PT, etc etc. even the little things, I am
useless at doing. But today I made a breakthrough. I drove the '06
E350 to a local chassis/brake/suspension/tire shop that is well
respected around here and I have used before.I had them check out
the suspension & steering and to have the tires balanced and rotated.
The owner and the technician both took the car for test drives and
went over what they saw with me. They could find no specific
problems. They also confirmed that new axles had been installed on
the front (it's AWD). So I rec'd a good health exam and more
importantly, I can now drive places by myself to help her do some of
the chores she has been 100% responsible for during the last year or
so. She has always worried about me and I hope that is behind us at
least partly.. i'm sure she'll still watch after me but now I can help
and will get the 91 300D into a shop ( or the same shop) to confirm
their diagnosis.

The owner of the shop where I went today is also a diesel guy with a
2013 E350D BT . We talked about what the other shop found and he
agrees with the diagnosis (sight unseen). hope to get it by sometime
in the near future for him to look at.

Yes, and unfortunately caused the demise of Aloha Airlines. Aloha
Airlines had an outstanding safety record. One death from one incident
in its entire lifetime, and that incident was from a failure of inspection
techniques developed by the Mfgr and the FAA, not from fault of the
airline. To its credit, the 737 stayed together enough to land, and to
its credit, the flight crew coped with the catastrophic failure and landed
the plane. Those guys (and the cabin crew) are every bit as much heros
as "Sully" but got/get NO recognition

I still miss Aloha Airlines. They were one of the best.

Different animal but:

The airframe, the 152nd Boeing 737 built, named/Queen
Liliuokalani/afterLili'uokalani
, withregistration
N73711,^[2]
 was
built in 1969 and delivered to Aloha Airlines as a brand-new aircraft.
While the airframe had only accumulated 35,496 flight hours prior to the
accident, those hours were over 89,680 flight cycles (a flight cycle is
defined as a takeoff and a landing), owing to its use on short
flights.^[3]

This is in regard to the 737 that lost a big part of its roof just aft of
the cockpit and yet managed to land safely.

A good friend used to work for NASA and was always flying here and

when the past maintenance's were performed...

Speaking of the education involved in reading a plane's age, i
understand Metal fatigue is still producing problems not fully
understood until recently.

How does that translate? - dunno, but it is a nice comparison versus

I vote for the Postal Inspectors route - playing along with Emma might
end up being a bad decision.  Emma might be a 250# linebacker sized
ex-con who might not like being toyed with.  And I would bet she would
spot it if you were to try string her along.    This gang has probably
been doing this kind of stuff for years and have perfected the con.  My
also son got a cashiers check.but he rec'd $3650 and asked me about it -
like you I called the bank and they knew right away what I was calling
about. Evidently this kind of crime is going on all the time...

The USPS Inspectors might already be in the midst of preparing a case
against Emma and her/his friends which you might unintentionally disturb
or scare them off.

YMMV,

Re: [MBZ] This One's for Wilton

2017-12-21 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
It amazes me the things they consider trusting to computers. With all
the recent revelations about hacks occurring at the Credit Reporting
companies, Dept of veterans Affairs, along with many other government
organizations, voting records, even the DMV proves that if there is
incentive some one will find a way in. Personally I don't trust the
results of any election that depends on computerized vote tallies to
learn the winner.  People with even a small amount of smarts can hack
them and once in the damage they could do is unlimited!  The county I
live in Va. still uses the "fill in the box" with a pen method and while
they could be changed, the results would generally leave a trail, and be
incredible tedious and slow,, etc making it unlikely to occur. But a
computerized election??  If they get in, (and I think they have shown it
is possible)  they could change millions of votes with the changing of a
0 into a 1 or vice versa.  Way to risky IMO although I understand some
counties across the nation use that kind of system.

Some are saying the N. Koreans are behind many of the scams we are
seeing - like Ransomware, etc. so some pretty nasty, well funded groups
might be tempted to tamper with our electronic voting.

Re: [MBZ] Scam-O-Rama

2017-12-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I just got an email from “Emma” saying that she saw the check was delivered
today and if I would let her know when I have it in hand. Funny that she
waived signature acceptance. However, she’s got over $25 in this for postage
alone at this point.

The things I could do at this point are almost overwhelming. I’ve got to
exercise restraint.

I’m tempted to tell her my mother in law has become ill and I had to go to her
house and won’t return until the weekend. With the weekend and banking
holidays I wouldn’t be able to cash the check until Tuesday….

Hmm.

OK, folks, I’ve got a classic mail fraud/bank scam going and I want to
know how you think I should proceed. No guarantees, but I’ll be
looking forward to some creative responses. Here’s the setup:

I have a Casio electronic piano for sale on Craigslist for $449.00.

I got an email from a potential buyer named “Emma”. Emma wanted to buy
my piano for her fiancé, but she’s not going to be in town until the
end of the month. She said she would send me a check for the piano and
some additional money to give to the movers who would come and collect
it for her.

I gave her my street address and name.

Today a cashier’s check drawn on Comerica Bank for $1600.00 showed up
in a Priority mail Express envelope.

I called Comerica to verify the authenticity of the check. It’s bogus.
The check was drawn on a Comerica branch in San Jose, CA and dated for
the 20th.

The Priority Express envelope was mailed from Mesa, AZ.

I have not contacted “Emma” about the check yet, however, if I go
silent I suspect she’s going to reach out to me. My first thought it
to take this to the USPS and let them deal with it, as Postal
Inspectors can always use something to do. Then again, as this is the
classic “I’ll give you extra money you can give to someone else” ploy
I wonder if I should string her along somehow…

Tell her you are going to drop the price and have found a better deal on
shipping for her. You will hold onto the check until the movers you are going
to use pick up the item, and will then deposit it. Then you will mail her a
refund of excess fees. Find a bogus check and send her that.

OR, let her know you are just going to sign her secured paper over to the IRS
to cover your tax bill. That might get a rise out of her

I was thinking the same thing. They’ve got to have someone on the receiving end
to make this worthwhile. That being said it also concerns me somewhat, as hey
no have my address. However, without knowledge that the check has been cashed
it’s not a lot of value to them - yet.

Unfortunately, I did handle the check, but minimally. It didn’t even occur to
me until after I had spoken to Comerica, who, I might add, was not the least
bit interested in getting involved at the slightest.

I may swing by the PO tomorrow and see what they recommend as well as my
community service officer (sheriff) and see what they say.

Perhaps get a response to Emma via a Mesa, AZ address and spook

Re: [MBZ] Kaleb's Next Okie Acres

2017-12-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I bought a house that was along the same lines as this one in Indianapolis in
September of 2008 that was a bank sale. Almost 4,000 sf custom home,
architecturally bizarre, paid barely $50/SF for it. (I realize the Kleb house
is not a distressed sale.) I had to put in about $8k to get it completely
livable as there was mold in the basement, but once that was resolved by a very
competent environmental remediation company and it passed an air quality test
we moved in.

Fortunately it wasn’t nearly as over the top as Kaleb’s future digs, but it was
bizarre as far as layout. High end appliances, heated bathroom floors, two
story foyer that was a huge waste of space, double sided fireplace, huge rooms,
etc., etc. A guy who worked for FedEx and was handicapped built it and then
went bankrupt. As a result of his limitations (I’m guessing) all of the doors
were wider, no thresholds, and very accessible bathrooms all on the first
floor. Two of the bedrooms were set up as suites with their own bathrooms and
storage, one on the ground floor with it’s own entrance, which the boys loved.

Wife hated it, but she had champaign tastes and we were on a beer budget as she
was working as a contractor and had only been so for a short time, so there
wasn’t a bank in the country that would consider her income as a part of a
mortgage. Sucks to be self-employed in circumstances like these.

I named it the “Momolith” to bug her and because I thought it looked like a
Masonic temple. You can see it here:

https://tinyurl.com/ychvms7z

As my youngest son once said, “Now I know what it’s like to live in a mansion.”

It was a great place, even if it was weird. If there was a negative it was
that the family seemed to spread out and be more isolated due to the size of
the place. My kids could disappear into their rooms and you would never know
they were there….

Wish I had it here in Florida. And yes, I’ve submitted it to this website for
consideration.

Yes, that and the FAA later mandated that 737s with 34000 cycles be

Re: [MBZ] New Heater Question was foam hose, now lack of heat in foot wells.

2017-12-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I solved that in the first SDL by sticking a 2x4 in the foot vent to
hold them open. (After paying thousands to replace PBU, Monovalve,
Circulation pump, vacuum solenoids, vacuum pods, etc.)

Jim Cathey via Mercedes

Those multi-valve vacuum blocks (driven by the ACC) seem to be fairly
unreliable. (Our SEL has two of these in there, where one normally goes.
I mixed and matched working valves from the two to get a full operating
set.) This on top of the usual soldering problems inside the ACC units,
the inevitable failing rubber within the vacuum pods, and the occasional
broken linkage on the footwell flaps.

Lack of heat in the footwells could be any/all of these.

Hammer and dolly of the weld while still hot also stretches the welded
area. Weld joints will always shrink when they cool... which places
stresses into the joint, and makes wrinkles.

The hammer/dolly routine flattens the weld and pushes the metal back to
original profile [if properly done]... Nice video, thanks for posting it.

Re: [MBZ] New Heater Question was foam hose, now lack of heat in foot wells.

Relatively easy diagnostic test is to swap out the ACC module for a good
used one.

2017-12-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If you’re getting heat elsewhere in the system I would assume the vacuum
actuator for the footwell flap has failed.

Time to get the MityVac out and go at things.

Re: [MBZ] New Heater Question was foam hose, now lack of heat in foot wells.

2017-12-21 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I’m going to be pulling my glove box today to determine if my foam hose is
rotted out or fallen off and replace if necessary.
In addition to this issue I have almost no heat going to the foot wells on
either side. The Push Button Unit seems to be working as there is a
corresponding change in air flow volume from the defrost area and the upper
side vents when when I change selections. FYI the center vents do not function
correctly with air conditioning setting. I believe the pod controlling this is
broken as it stopped working last year.
Any thoughts about the no heat in the foot wells?
Thanks,
Mike
