Okay. I am writing this as much for me as for you. Actually, I writing for me

Fix the cars you own that can be fixed quickly, cheaply and easily, and sell
them. For a profit. If I'm not going to make a profit, why did I buy them?

Part out the scrappers that need parted and scrap the hulks. I can't save them

I'm going to purchase four (me, SWMBO, and two kids) ‎W210's as low miles as

[MBZ] Pass the man candy

2017-12-24 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
At a couple of gatherings I have passed around the man candy. Everyone,
male and female, has enjoyed it and commented about how good it is.

Y'all will be the hero of the party if ya make some and pass it around.

To make Man Candy:

1 beef brisket
Morton tenderquick salt blend

rub the appropriate amount of tenderquick onto the meat per the
directions on the tenderquick bag.
Wrap the meat and put it back in the refr. for 1-7 days. (Morton sez 1
day is adequate, but extra tome doesn't hurt anything.)

slow bake or bbq at about 180ºF for 5-6 hours,
cool
pull off fat layers and bag the meat
refr or freeze as needed.

I started out slicing the brisket like corned beef, but it is so tender
it falls apart, so now I just pass around the bag with the meat and let
people pull off pieces like string cheese.

I have cut the brisket for bagging so that the strands are about 4"
long. That makes it similar to string cheese.

If you pass the man candy AND string cheese you'll be a party hero for sure!

It is killer man candy!

If I recall right, the 86-87 300 engines have more HP than the "3.5"

Max Dillon via Mercedes
December 24, 2017 at 9:07 PM
If you put the IP from the 3.5 on the 3.0, you'll need to adjust the
pump governor for the higher RPM, and maybe turn down the fuel amount
a bit to reduce smoking. I've still got to make those adjustments on
mine, probably going to start with just increasing the maximum RPM.
Now that I've got the boost turned up and the bad delivery valve
fixed, my car is running pretty good but still has worse fuel
consumption than before.

Keep the 3.0 turbo, it has a simple pressure operated waste gate. The
3.5 has the vacuum operated, more complex.

[MBZ] swap 603.96 for a .97

2017-12-24 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I have a couple of 140 diesels that I need to do something with.  One
I bought a while back that supposedly has a dead motor.  The other one I
bought a while back supposedly had something wrong with it and they
pulled the head off and it is currently apart with the parts in the
trunk.  I also have several .96 motors sitting around.  I would prefer
to keep a 3.5 a 3.5, but have been thinking about swapping in a 3.0.  I
know the .97 is lower RPM and has more torque, but how much of a
difference would it be to drop in a .96?  Would the gearing be any
different? Would it be worth while to swap the updated .97 head onto the
.96?  Should the .97 IP be swapped onto the .96?  What about Turbo?
Anybody have any thoughts or ran into anybody that has done this swap?
I do have the 350SDL that the fuse box caught on fire but has the
factory rebuilt with updated rods engine.  Still trying to decide if its
a parts car or if I should splice wires and fix the wiring to the fuse box.

I doubt it in that market, unless he had an “in” with the seller’s family. I’m
betting he probably paid maybe $5k. With all the information that’s out there
these days it’s pretty tough to give something away like that. If anyone in
the family had half a brain they looked up values on the interwebs. And if
they had an estate lawyer they certainly had the value checked out as well.

Re: [MBZ] OT- Fun With Guns Today

2017-12-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Congrats!

Just checked the status on mine. Still waiting. They have 90 days to do it
and I just applied on the 7th, so I wasn’t expecting any results just yet
anyway…

Just finished wrapping the Walther P22 for the wife. Didn’t want to put a
firearm under the tree and leave it for an extended period of time. I’m betting
the range will be crazy busy on the 26th. I went on Friday afternoon and it
was nuts. They had a group of 8 people come to get certified at one time.
Between two RSOs it was pretty crazy - I got drafted to helping out for a bit
by the head RSO. I didn’t mind, as he ends up giving me free pistol
instruction that would otherwise cost me $125/hour.

On a related note, I’ve been practicing a lot based on a lot of the links and
tips given here - thanks to everyone for their assistance! I’m far from
perfect, but I’ve pretty much eliminated my lower left quadrant (target) issue
by doing a lot of dry firing to get a good feel for the trigger on my pistols.
That has made a tremendous difference in my ability to hit the center
consistently and have some really good groupings. I’m learning exactly where
they release and as a result I’m not dropping the barrel when I shoot.

Practice makes perfect!

Re: [MBZ] Crazy W114 on BAT

2017-12-24 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I did, and I’m betting I’ll get flagged. Here’s what I posted so you can see
it:

@jaimekop  – As a 25+ year Mercedes
owner of many different models, W114s included, and a seller on BAT, I
completely agree with you. The whole idea of selling a car like this is to
maximize value, and do so by maintaining the integrity/authenticity of the car.
That’s not saying it has to be concourse – it doesn’t – but it says a lot about
a seller who is clearly flipping the car to a customer base of enthusiasts who,
like myself, look over things in great detail as a part of the car’s value.

The minimal amount of effort necessary to put things right, such as
reinstalling the (original) Becker radio and sourcing the proper finish
windshield wiper arms would far outweigh the ding that many discerning buyers
who have the funds available to purchase such a vehicle would give this car.
(Myself included.)

It’s a beautiful car for the most part, but when I’m looking to drop $10,000+
on a nearly 50 year old car, I’m going to pick nits. It’s also revealing as to
the seller’s knowledge (or lack thereof) of the car as well. I’m not
criticizing, I’m just saying that it amazes me that people don’t take the time
to do a little research before marketing – often time that would yield
information that would potentially increase the selling price….

And for goodness sakes, why are people selling nearly 50 year old cars with
modern radios in them??? Argh!!

Posters on BAT seem to be a lot more aggressive about taking down posts that
are negative or challenge the sellers these days. Or is it just me?

they like to look at BAT to get some real world values.

Re: [MBZ] special tools Wuz: Help! Trying to change the parking brake shoes on a W124

2017-12-24 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I'm a big fan of special tools, but can understand the issues they present
for the DIY'er who will use them once. I generally invest in tools for the
long run, knowing that I'll use them again on another car in the future
(since I end up buying so many cars over time). And in some cases, its
just about doing the job right instead of "close enough". (Like that funky
torque wrench you supposed to use to tighten a steering box, which I have).

But to be unhappy with MB because they require special tools is really just
misunderstanding their perspective. MB wrote their service procedures for
their service workshops to perform tasks efficiently, consistently, to
factory specifications, and in a profitable manner. Dealers were (and are)
required to own a specified set of special tools to perform
maintenance/reapir tasks. Its built into their operating costs. They
didn't take into consideration what someone in their driveway would have to
do 40 years later, its really completely out of scope for them.

There are work arounds for special tools... I agree with the timing chain
rail pin puller for example. I actually finally bought one for the first
time this year for the 4.5 I'm working on and promptly broke it. I went
back to the bolt, socket, and washer method after working out the threaded
piece stuck in the pin I was trying to remove.

But one tool I like is the RIV injection pump timing tool. It saves hours
of work, especially on the OM60X engines. Its expensive, but pays for
itself in the second or third use... and I've used it on manys cars by now:

Suspension tools are another great example of huge time savers. Taking
apart the front end of a W116, W123 or W126 with the proper (not
life-risking-Chinese) tools is really a pleasure. Sure you could do it
with "close enough" tools, but with more time spent with higher risk of
injury to yourself or damage to parts.

That's the way it was when we owned our sailboat ~15 years ago.  No
matter how many tools I brought with me to do a job, I would quickly
find there was at least one more I needed.  I usually ended up going to
Home Depot, Lowe's or ACE to buy another tool identical to one I had at
home.    Balancing the cost of buying another tool Vs driving home and
back (45 min each way), meant I would have a new version in the trunk.

I never thought about how bad things might be with a 2nd home.  Yikes!
