My observation of that incident is, it clearly demonstrates the disconnect between "education" and "practical application". We splurged on a KitchenAid not long after we were first married. I say splurged because it was a major purchase for us at the time. We still have it today and it works like a champ. I’ve had to replace the beater a couple of times since it’s some sort of coated metal that gets worn out, but the bowls and everything else we have for it are all original and still working. -D > On Apr 22, 2018, at 8:32 PM, Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes > wrote: > > My sons have set up households, bought houses and are getting married this > year. Of our two daughters who got student loans to attend Ivy's, one has paid hers off and the other is close. The third daughter screamed and threw fits when we wouldn't let her take loans to go Ivy, but later learned that her State school degree was just fine, and even got her into an Ivy masters program - at no cost to her. Our son had learned from watching his sisters and had no problem going to a State school for the undergrad degree, then getting paid to get the Masters. Private and government loans are presumed nondischargeable. That does not mean they cannot be discharged. In the beginning, student loans were just like any other unsecured debt. As I mentioned earlier, it was possible to graduate from law school, file for bankruptcy, and never make a payment on 7 years of student loans. In 1976, they changed the law to make government backed student loans presumed nondischargeable for 5 years after repayment started. Until the five years were up, the borrower had to prove repayment constituted 'undue hardship'. Ordinary hardship was OK. In 1984, private loans were also presumed non-dischargeable. Somewhere along the line, five years became 7 years, then in 2005 they massively overhauled bankruptcy law, imposing income limits on chapter 7 bankruptcy filings and making all student loans nondischargeable for life. They kept the rare exception for 'undue hardship', which usually means you're disabled and can't engage in any substantial economic activity, or you had children you couldn't afford to feed and making you repay your loans would impose undue hardship on the kids you shouldn't have had in the first place. Under the law, it's OK if repayment imposes a hardship, even a severe hardship, but if it's undue hardship then you can do something about it. Proving undue hardship is normally about as easy as proving your prison sentence constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Paint looks to me like it's oxidized or dusty which distorts the color in picture. Needs a good wash and a full "Martha" to shine properly.. I'm betting the Mercedes single stage paint would buff right up to a full shine and make the car look the right color. Otherwise, looks like a good car. Re: [MBZ] OT - but nice
Hey, no worse than my Dad wanting me to go into banking like him and my brother. As an executive VP of the bank, he tried to set me up to intern the summer after I graduated from high school. No joy. Nobody wanted the boss’s son hanging around looking over their shoulder. He knew I was a “nuts and bolts” sort of person, but didn’t want to hear it at the time. After I blew off a semester in college he finally faced up to the fact and I enrolled in trade school. Best thing I ever did. The worst thing was that the high school I went to, which drew from a fairly upper middle class area, would only send the “burnouts” to our local technical/trade school. Anyone who didn’t want to go to college was a “looser", and not worthy of their educational efforts. This chafed me big time, and surprisingly, my parents realized this. I signed up for a two year program in printing and graphic arts, something that really interested me at the time, and guess what? My high school “lost” my paperwork. Yup, I’m waiting for my acceptance to the tech school and it never comes (I was an A/B student, mind you.) They deep sixed my paperwork because they thought I shouldn’t go there and “waste my education” as my advisor later told my parents. At that point I was done with high school. I pretty much blew off my last two years in an effort to get out as quickly as possible. I’m still somewhat bitter about it. Amazingly enough, a couple of the “burnouts” I knew in high school that went to the tech school are now very successful businessmen in the local community. Go figure. My future wife went to the technical school as well, taking computer programming. She’s been quite successful in her field as well without having to obtain a college degree (which she now has having done it well after the fact.) -D > On Apr 22, 2018, at 12:01 PM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes > wrote: > > Drafting, something I had zero skill or interest in. [MBZ] Education
Most folks do not want their children to be blue collar workers but most of the children would be better off if trained for a trade than if they just get a liberal arts degree. Here in Manitoba, apprentices get tuition paid and get unemployment insurance during the periods when they go back to school so they will not live high on the hog, so to speak, but they can survive on their own if need be. My elder son is an architect with 7 years of university and a master's degree. My younger one is a red seal journeyman auto tech. I paid to educate the elder one so he had no student loans. The taxpayer paid to educate the younger one. His investment was in tools but many trades do not require much in that regard. His friend the electrician has very little in the way of tools. I think the old 7 year rule of the 1980s and 1990s was a happy medium between the abuses of the 1970s (the first real world court experience for a new attorney was often the filing of bankruptcy on his student loans) and the current 'haunt you to your grave' situation. If the student was still unable to pay his loans 7 years after his deferments expired, we'd admit the education was a bad investment and let it go. I don't expect anything like 'make them non-dischargeable for 7-10 years' to gain any traction legislatively these days. You cannot discharge student load debt. That is, Federal student loans. I don’t know about private student loans. The only way to get out of them is through death or forgiveness via one of the forgiveness programs they run, such as government service or teaching. I would add that the forgiveness programs are tricky, in that only certain types of Federally subsidized loans qualify. -D > On Apr 22, 2018, at 9:38 AM, Kaleb C. If they went back to that, millions of low income asset free student loan debtors would file BK in the first six months. Re: [MBZ] W124 Differential Mounts
No, but I watched this video about it: https://youtu.be/bSYM69HD-Hs Apparently measuring the positions before removal is advisable. I keep looking for a way to use the 500sl diff backing plate with one bushing way out to the side, to better deal with reactive torque loads. But the 500sl rear subframe is apparently quite different from the v8 w124. On Sat, Apr 21, 2018, 10:03 AM Dan Penoff via Mercedes < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: > Anyone every done these?
