Re: [MBZ] Radio antenna

2019-02-03 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I need to see if the wire from the knocked-off fuse block goes to the antenna.
Could not really tell from the wiring schematic exactly what that block was for
and I did not remove the trunk panels to chase the wire. Then I’ll check the
other stuff too. But it’s raining now and I’m going to an oyster roast Q later
and be drankin some beer.

Thanks y’all.

Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun

2019-02-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yup. Just chipping away.

I’m juggling the logistics of the headliner replacement right now. I just
ordered my new reproduction dash pad from the supplier in Turkey, which should
arrive in a couple of weeks. I started tearing into the dash yesterday and hope
to finish that up today. That way I have the wood out of the dash so I can
start refinishing it.

I need to drive it over to the headliner guy in the next week or two so he can
get an idea of what he’s going to do and can order materials. I have a new MB
headliner, but he’ll need some padding and he’s also going to replace the
windlace while the car is in the shop, too. Both windshield and rear glass will
come out for this, so I’ve got to get seals ordered soon, too.

The wife is going in for hip surgery on the 6th of March, so I want to get the
car to him before then so he can have it for a week or two to do his stuff
while I’m busy doing home health care. Once he’s done I hope to have everything
done on my end as far as refinished wood and the dash pad painted so it will
begin to come together after that point.

Sorry to hear about your wife -- not fun times ahead.  I self-graduated
last weekend to a cane (was hexapod now a tripod) and will see doc on
Tuesday, see what my status is.  Best wishes for her (and you).

The headliner on the SL is also drooping and falling down, I guess when
I can get the hardtop off it will be time to reglue it or whatever one
does, won't have to send it to a specialty shop. Your expertise will be
helpful in that regard, something I can do I expect.  It's supposed to
be some high-end material on the SL600 I think, it feels kinda dense and
rubbery, maybe it is actually fabric of some kind.  I also noticed that
EVERYTHING in the cabin is covered with leather, no vinyl, it is pretty
cool.

Yeah it is kinda bland looking, but for stealth mode maybe that is not
too bad.  Looks kinda like a Ford Probe.

The first car I got to regularly drive was my parents' 66 Bonneville,
maroon with black interior.  That huge barge was very quick, my mom
introduced me to full pedal travel in that car!  Hit the floor and the
other 2 barrels would open up on the 389...  I'm sure the Ferrari V-12
is a bit more refined...

That cheap class is up to $8100!!!

I did a writeup for headliner replacement in the BW R129 forum, I believe. I’ll
see if I can find it and post the link to you via PM. It’s actually pretty easy
to do and not terribly expensive, either.

This is wife’s “other” hip - she had her left hip replaced in 2014, I think. It
was just a matter of time before this one failed. I don’t mind all the stuff
dealing with this. Since I can do a lot of work from home it works out pretty
well, as I still take FMLA leave but I do it “intermittently”. That way I can
work at least part of the time and not have to worry about exhausting my
accrued time. Fortunately, my employer is pretty cool about it.

Thanks for the wishes. She’s an old hand at this stuff. I would be freaking
out. I haven’t been in a hospital since the 1960s. I’m hoping to keep it that
way for a long time.

replace it, maybe even buy a whole black leather skin to do it!

Yup. There’s a guy in Turkey who has been making reproduction dash pads for a
number of years now. Only place you can get one. $800 versus over $1600 and 6-8
months to get yours redone by the dash guys in CA. Because of the packing and
bulk it costs over $200 to ship one, but it’s still a good deal. I’ve talked to
a number of people who have gotten them and they’ve all been really happy with

He also does some other reproduction stuff, like grille trim, door seals,

painted so it will begin to come together after that point.

[MBZ] 87 SDL IP issue

2019-02-03 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I decided to fart around with this SDL I picked up a while back that runs
like crap, seems like it’s only running on about 4 cylinders. In looking at the
IP somebody at some point tried to do delivery valve seals except they did not
have he socket. The things were chewed up and I had a hard time getting the
socket on them. The #1 delivery valve did not appear to have the copper washer
and the spring was broken. The rest of them appeared to be OK as far as no
missing parts but all of them were tightened down so much it was difficult to
remove them. I did the job using holders from a spare parts IP. When I fired
the car up, it’s still running like crap. I loosened each line and determined
it seems the issue with with #2. There is no fuel at all coming out of that
port out of the IP. I took that valve back apart and everything seemed fine but
I went ahead and swapped out the upper barrel with another one and still no
fuel coming out of that port. What could be the issue? Maybe they somehow
pulled the lower part which has to be oriented a specific way. On several of
the holes I did notice little metal flakes probably from slight damage to the
threads from over tightening. All the valve holders when back in just fine. I
fear I may end up just having to swap the IP.

Re: [MBZ] A Lexus Equivalent

2019-02-03 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
Maybe an LS 400? Supposed to be of a good quality when new and sought after
since it was very reliable. They held their value as used cars for many many
years. If somebody has taken quality care of one, I would think it may be no
worse than a w124. I do not think any japanese cars are going to compare
favorably with a W123 for long term reliability.

There is a growing collector market for earlier oriental cars. A 1977 Celica
is much sought after. There was a 1990 Supra that brought large money at
auction this past summer. These are the cars the younger collectors grew up
with, are cheap to get into and pretty simple to put back into service.

Further evidence the auto industry has lost it's soul. Sorry, any valid
reason all car manufacturers only build the same boooring body line.
Nothing about this car that excites me to see it.. coming or going. The
badge could read Hyunda, or Nissan, just as easily and no one would
know.

Sad world we now live in, automotive wise.

It’s nearly 70 outside and I went as far as I could today with the SDL and need
to order parts for other projects in line so I decided to move about a dozen
hoods and trunk lids I had outside up against a fence about 10 feet into the
barn. Got that job done and still need to move about 2 dozen bumpers. Came back
inside and now I feel like I just got done running a marathon or something. I

Re: [MBZ] DIY Chrome Plating

2019-02-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’ll check that out. Really anything short of replating is a temporary fix and
even a possible bodge.

Fortunately I only really need the upper bumper pieces for the rear and the
little trim strips on the rear doors. The rest of the chrome is in pretty good
shape. The taillight housings are on the way out, too, but I’ll hold out to
find some used ones that are good. They’re pricey but they do pop up form time
to time. Since the lenses are melted into the housings the likelihood of
removing them for replating without damage is pretty low. There are replacement
lenses but they’re pretty lousy quality and quite pricey.

The German MB club has commissioned reproduction bumpers for these cars, but
they didn’t do the uppers, not sure why.

None of this stuff is a major deal, I’m just trying to keep costs to a minimum
German eBay has been a great place for finding nice used stuff if I can get the
seller to ship to the US. If not Alex and a couple other people I know are
helping with transshipments.

do care about aerodynamics - less drag = more speed. I still like the 275

I just don’t see how you function around there. I’m no OCD maniac about my
garage, but holy moley, I could never work in that nightmare.

What OK Don says is only half of the problem - you need to put stuff away where
it belongs when you’re done with it.

Make a list of priorities, like getting your lift set up, or something else
major that will help to bring some order to the place. Then get some heavy duty
shelving and bins or just boxes and organize your stuff. I have a bunch of
plastic containers that are labeled as to what’s in them (in a general sense)
and stuff goes in them. They’re pretty vague as far as description, but I know
that engine stuff will be in the “engine” box, chassis in the “chassis” and so
on.

Devote a couple of days/weekends to getting things straightened out and you’ll
be amazed at how much easier your (car) life is. And keep them that way.

Pry the back or rear edge of the painted insert. It’s held in with pins. once
the tow pins are released, the insert piece slides back and out. Then you can
see the screws that hold the trim to the C pillar.

Good to know, I never took one of those off.

Re: [MBZ] I’m out of shape

Yes, that is the plan.  I have a couple of cars I must get done then I
do not plan on starting on anything else until I have the shop
organized.  It will probably involve moving most of the cars out, take
everything off of the shelves and throw everything in the middle, then
start putting it away in an organized fashion so I can locate new and/or
used parts as needed.  Then organize the tools.  I am really good about
keeping things straight once I get it that way.  It's just the getting
it that way that is the hard part.  After this, I will then finish
getting the lift done and then should be able to start knocking out cars
fairly quickly. What ends up taking a lot of the time is hunting around
for where I laid such and such tool, or I know I saw a part I need
somewhere but can't remember where.  So once that happens, I can start
getting cars sold.

[MBZ] Whazzit? (1980 240D)

2019-02-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I finally got the steering lock in the 240D today.   One question,
should I have put the key lock and the kryptonite security cover on the
steering lock before I put it in?  I was thinking that the key lock
could be removed with the steering lock in place, so the steering lock
should go  in first, then the key lock, and then the kryptonite cover.

Here is my whazzit question:

My other question is about mounting the plate under the dash  on the
driver side.  I was thinking it mounted with 2 8mm head screws to the
underside of the dash.  (See picture)  Its been over 10 years since I
took it out to cut out the original steering lock, so I forgot.   Not a
big deal, but I'd like to put it back where it goes, if I can.   I am
not sure if it goes up to the left or to the right of the steering
column.   There is a CC amp to put in to, and now that I am writing
this, I think that plate attached  to the CC amp, and then the CC bolts
up under the dash somewhere.

I need to find a bulb holder for the LF turn signal, two turn signal
bulbs, a headlight, a side marker light bulb and get the brake hoses on,
then it should be ready to be inspected by the polzei and then, with a
bond, I should be able to get it titled and on the road finally!

[MBZ] Bulb Source

2019-02-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
For what it’s worth, I’ve been buying bulbs from these guys for a while and
have been very pleased with the selection and prompt shipping. Most of what
they sell is CEC brand bulbs, but if you buy bulbs from places like the Island
of Large Wimmen that’s what you’re getting. I haven’t found that there is a
quality issue with them myself.

http://www.bulbtown.com

For example, the 64132 halogen bulb that’s used as a running light on the W210
chassis cars is around $6-$8/each from other suppliers. They’re under
$3.00/each from Bulbtown. The last pair of these I bought a year or two ago
from the IoLW was over $10 and they were CEC brand. The finnie uses a startling
number of little 2W bayonet bulbs in the dash, easily 8-10 in the instrument
cluster alone, and 15 of them cost me under $5.

Kaleb,
One of the best investments I ever made was to purchase 240 ft. of 12 ft
tall x 42 inch wide pallet racking and set it up with the first row of
shelves 48 inches off the ground, so there was room for large heavy items
[whole engines, etc.]
Second best investment was a rolling warehouse ladder to access the upper
shelves... Cleared a huge amount of floor space and let me organize things
so I could find them.
Something on that order might work well for you also. If you look around,
there will be a company that sells used pallet rack, or an bankrupt auction
of a warehouse, etc...

[MBZ] pallet rack: wuz: I’m out of shape

2019-02-03 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
auctions will be cheaper for pallet rack.   if you can find the kind
with a lip for 2x lumber, that is great for boxes and smaller stuff.
You put in 2Xs, the top  of them is level with the top of the pallet
rack rail.  You can still stack pallets on them.

The guys that resell used pallet rack get big bucks.   Way better to buy
it direct for the owner, and better yet at auction.

The stuff I bought has a heavy gauge wire inserts that make up the
"shelves". setup was easy, and the wire inserts will hold boxes, or
pallets, or about anything. Previously, I had racks with 2x4's and it took
forever to set up.. Wire is the way to go for ease.
