I suppose I’ll have to have a little YouTube fest on figuring out how to find

[MBZ] AC leaks

2019-05-08 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
This afternoon the AC in the '95 E300 was weak. Really weak. Yesterday it was
ok but not as cold as it had been, day before it was perfect like it had been
for about a month. Center vent air was at best about 65 degrees F today,
yesterday around 50, before that 44.

I recharged with a partial can let over from last time, then got out the leak
detector. Evap still has a slight leak. Front of the compressor alarmed, so
that shaft seal is bad.

I'm thinking about just resealing the compressor and then trying another can of
the Cliplight leak sealer.

Re: [MBZ] Window switches

2019-05-08 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
How many wires go to the lift motor? I should think that if you can get
to the motor wiring, you should be able to check to see if putting power
on in one direction and then the other makes the window go up and down.
At that point, it should be possible to wire in some form of switch or
switches to make it operable while you look for a replacement switch.

Or, have they wired the whole thing into the computer so that you need
to be an EE in order to figure it out?

On 08/05/2019 10:57 AM, Curley McLain via Mercedes wrote:
Wow!  I love the 124/126 switches compared to the newer stuff.  I know
on the 210 and maybe on the late 124s the window switches on the
console come as a unit, not 4 individual switches.

Driver window just quit on the van.   I can hear the motor trying to
go up, but no down.  Took out the switch unit.  tapped it upside down,
on edge etc to see if I could clear crud and get it working.  Now this
is where it gets crazy.  2^6 possibilities.

The driver door switch unit can have these possibilities:

Power mirrors / not
power folding mirrors / not
auto down front windows / not
opening rear windows / not
power open/close doors / not
opening rear vents / not

I bought the van because it did NOT have the stupid power doors.
almost every/every van ordered for dealer inventory has power doors.

I believe this one was spec'd by the company who bought it.

It has

Power mirrors
power folding mirrors / not
auto down front windows
opening rear windows
power open/close doors / not
opening rear vents

so it is unusualCrockauto has about 30 choices for switches.   I did
not see the right one.
It is INSANE to have that many different parts for the same
position.  They all fit in the same hole.

Unless I can find the right one on car-part.com I am screwed. There
does not appear to be any way to take it aprt and replace one switch,
ot to transfer contact fmor a rear window to the dead one.   Being
over 7 yrs old, I am not sure if a stealer can even get the right
switch.   If I could isolate the correct wires (not likely without a
stealer only wiring diagram) I suppose I could bodge some additional
switch for that window...

[MBZ] The Fast Prius

2019-05-08 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
A guy in a fast Mercedes was trying out his new ride at night when he stopped
to help an old fellow in a Prius who was broken down on the side of the road.
Neither one knew anything about the innards of a Prius, so they tied the Prius
to the Mercedes with a tow rope.
Before long the Mercedes driver completely forgot about the Prius he was towing
and started driving fast. The old fellow could barely keep the Prius on the
road, but no matter what he did, the Mercedes driver ignored him.

Before long they got caught in a speed trap and pulled over. The highway
patrolman radioed his buddy: "You gotta come up here and see this", he said,
"This Mercedes was doing 140 and an old guy in a Prius was honking his horn and
flashing his lights trying to pass him."

I did not take the console switches on our '94 E420 or '95 E320 apart
because they worked just fine. Our '90 E300D/2.5 Turbo had four
individual switches. I have not yet taken apart the switch assembly of our
'93 E300D/2.5 Turbo, though I will have to because the windows don't all
work properly -- and I will have to take the doors apart as well.

dunno.  it has two plugs. No PNP here or within 60 miles has a van this
new.
I can't find a power door switch to see if the plugs are the same. Don't
want to buy one just to try it.  (non-returnable)

So the choices I have are
Pay through the nose for a new one if the factory will even provide
one.  $300+

Buy an new aftermarket one  $200+  IF i can find one.
Car-part.com for a used one$50 -$200
some kind of jerry rig additional switch.

And in the original rant, I didn't even include the newest way they make
POS switches:  have to be programmed by the stealer to work

$10k is not cheap for 20 years old.
I'm not sure about the class C (which tend to have better resale than class A),
but there are a lot of big block class As that got new engines at 40-80k miles.

It's apparently a hard life for the drivetrain. Those Vixen/BMWs were blowing
engines left and right, but the 524td wasn't exactly a durable diesel car
either. I wonder what a Vixen with a OM602 or OM603 would be like. (or, now
that they're 15 years old, how about an OM648?)

[MBZ] Window switches

2019-05-08 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Wow!  I love the 124/126 switches compared to the newer stuff.  I know
on the 210 and maybe on the late 124s the window switches on the console
come as a unit, not 4 individual switches.

Driver window just quit on the van.   I can hear the motor trying to go
up, but no down.  Took out the switch unit.  tapped it upside down, on
edge etc to see if I could clear crud and get it working.  Now this is
where it gets crazy.  2^6 possibilities.

The driver door switch unit can have these possibilities:

Power mirrors / not
power folding mirrors / not
auto down front windows / not
opening rear windows / not
power open/close doors / not
opening rear vents / not

I bought the van because it did NOT have the stupid power doors. almost
every/every van ordered for dealer inventory has power doors.

I believe this one was spec'd by the company who bought it.

It has

Power mirrors
power folding mirrors / not
auto down front windows
opening rear windows
power open/close doors / not
opening rear vents

so it is unusualCrockauto has about 30 choices for switches.   I did not
see the right one.
It is INSANE to have that many different parts for the same
position.  They all fit in the same hole.

Unless I can find the right one on car-part.com I am screwed.   There
does not appear to be any way to take it aprt and replace one switch, ot
to transfer contact fmor a rear window to the dead one.   Being over 7
yrs old, I am not sure if a stealer can even get the right switch.   If
I could isolate the correct wires (not likely without a stealer only
wiring diagram) I suppose I could bodge some additional switch for that
window...

Re: [MBZ] 1994 e420 woes

2019-05-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I was driving the SL600 on Saturday, it was running really well. Stopped
at a light and as it dropped to idle it was barely running, misfiring,
smoking.  I managed to limp along until I got a couple miles to where I
was going.  Shut it off and it ran fine.  I need to tear into the
wiring, it has likely all gone to shite on the throttle bodies and
ignition bits and whatever else. Just have not take the time to check it
out.

There is a Russian guy in NJ who rebuilds all this stuff too, esp on the
600s.  He has lots of vids on his web site about working on them, but
not the actual rebuilding/resoldering.

[MBZ] OM606 woes

2019-05-08 Thread Trampas Stern via Mercedes
So 4 glow plugs broke off on my OM606, I ended up drilling them out and
replacing. Only one needed thread insert because I grabbed wrong tap to
chase threads. While in there I replaced the fuel lines and fuel filter.
I prime the fuel filter by removing return fuel line and pressurizing tank
until fuel comes out return line. The car is still hard to start after
fuel filter change.

Anyway got car started and drive it for about 20 miles, would occasionally
miss at idle like air still in lines. Then the car lost all power and
died. Towed home and it was not getting fuel... So I was close to 1/4
tank of fuel so I removed fuel screen in tank and checked, it is all good.
I had cleaned out tank from coating failing already, but thought I would
check. The only thing I can figure is that the lift pump died. I removed
lift pump and it will create vacuum on inlet and pressure on outlet, but
still not pumping.

New fuel pump will be here today and we will see, I am just having a hard
time believing that fuel pump died at same time as I did everything else...
However car does have 407k miles so fuel pump might be due for replacement.

I can not think of anything else that would cause no fuel, unless cam in
injection pump is worn not to have enough stroke. I can pressurize return
line and get car to run, so I know it is a fuel supply problem. I have
thought about putting an electric pump on the car but figured that the
mechanical pump worked for 400k and if I get another 400k I will be happy.

Also if anyone has an old fuel pressure relief valve from a OM617 they will
sell me please let me know. I hear the new ones from Mercedes are junk. I
have not checked my fuel pressure at injection pump to see if valve is
working but figured it might be time to change or adjust.

Thanks
Trampas
