Well I guess I'll have to scrap this poor car. Third set of plugs, never
applied anti-seize.

Last night we went out to local Greek Fest, Infiniti stumbled off idle when
cold, it was a jerky ride for a bit. After it warmed up, no problems.

This morning the same behavior but it was very short lived.

I think there may be air in the fuel rail that needs to bleed out.

Lol, this reminds me of why I never traveled in the winter when I lived in
Sault Ste. Marie -- take a week off and come home to three feet of snow in the
drive and a snowstorm, sidewalks impassible, and at least two hours of digging
to get the car off the street so the snowplow won't bury it at three am.

A house sitter (or at least someone to come in every week) and a lawn service
is definitely the way to go.

Check the air flow sensor and temperature sensors -- sounds to me as if it's
running in normal warmed up closed loop mode when cold -- just like having the
choke stuck open on a carburetor.

A small vacuum leak can do the same thing, check for cracks in the intake
between the airflow sensor and the head. My niece failed miserably at learning
to drive a stick shift on my BIL's BMW for this reason, she couldn't get the
car moving without stalling it. "Typical intake manifold crack" was the
eventual diagnosis.

Glad you survived the winter of darkness.

When I lived in Hawaii for 2 yrs, the Quantum was stored and the escort

right off.  Same with the quantum.   (I love Diesels with mechanical

So his 'history' of code violations, which he may or may not have fixed
promptly, on his rental property are the reason they're whacking him for $500 a
day now?
How many of those violations were violations committed by tenants, and how many
did he address promptly?

I'm not saying he didn't deserve this, and it looks like he may well deserve
this, but I still don't think we have all the facts. We just have one TV news
blurb savaging the city and one competing TV news blurb excusing the city.

Nice job. I remember doing a similar restoration on my W111 coupe front

[MBZ] So this happened, it was kinda funny

2019-05-12 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Was driving the $500E300 this afternoon and a little rain shower started
so I put on the wiper.  It made about 3 passes and the blade fell off,
landed in the well there between the hood and windshield.  Kinda
surprising, that has never happened to me!  I pulled over and popped it
back on, I guess the clip wasn't in tight or something.  Anyway, later I
drove home and it was raining steadily, wiper blade stayed on.

It was a new blade I put on a few months ago, and I don't think I have
used the wipers much since.

My first car, the 1975 Civic Hatchback, did that to me one day.
Also with a wiper installed by the owner/driver.
I put the wipers on intermittent (I'd installed an aftermarket delay box
courtesy of JC Whitney) and used them as little as possible until I got home.
When the windshield dried, I had a nice arc inscribed in the glass.

20 year old me was too stupid to pull over and put the wiper arm in the up
position.
(but who knows, maybe it would have blown back down in the wind anyway)

[MBZ] 87 OM603 no start

2019-05-12 Thread Tim Crone via Mercedes
Hi folks,

Happy mother's day, everyone! We have a puzzle for you...

Jack and I thought we were really close on reviving the SDL. It was mostly
working: started immediately, power weak but improving, as of Thursday.
#22 head.

We drove about three miles (~25mph) with no problems. We went up one final
mild slope (1 or 2%) just before getting home and the car noticeably lost
power. I looked in the engine bay and tightened two of the injector hard
lines. We ran around the driveway and it was really rough - jumpy like
intermittent fuel. Also there was a terrible smell that I couldn't
identify.

Friday evening the engine would not start. I found a disconnected vacuum
line but nothing else obviously wrong. Now the engine will turn and
almost-seem-to-catch, but never stay running.

* Starter sounds like it did before, when the engine fired straightaway.
* I cracked all six hard lines and it seems to be getting fuel to each.
* I tried diesel kleen in the spin filter (no diesel purge locally) and no
change.
* Some air is coming into the intake when the starter is turning.
* I could not feel exhaust.
* When Jack lets off the starter there is a puff of smoke from behind the
injection pump.
* The smell is still present; it is not raw diesel or plastic, and I don't
think it's coolant.
* Fluids are stable and appear normal.
* Fuel filters seem fine.

Given the immediate-ish failure I'm thinking my next step is to check
compression. However we would really appreciate any recommendations!

Thanks,
Tim & Jack

Well what jumps out at me is that you don't feel exhaust. Sounds like a
blockage in the exhaust. Take it loose as close as your can right after the
turbo, before the catalytic converter.

This car does not have the original football exhaust filter thing, right above
the turbo, right?

Classic symptoms of a plugged exhaust.

The old trap catalyst looks like a silver football, located between the rear of
the exhaust manifold and the turbo. The replacement is an insulated pipe about
the same diameter as the manifold.

There is also a catalyst at the end of the downpipe, no reason to think it
could not be clogged, or the muffler's collapsed.

Maybe I should find a Harbour Fright engine and tuck that under the hood in the
SD with the locked up OM617. I can use the 25% off coupon.

I will be needing to off load the current SDL at some point. Drove it 70 mile
round trip for lunch with Mom. Drives like a dream with smooth shifts and
plenty of power. Just looks like a hot mess as I have yet been able to give it
a good Martha treatment

The lawn part of the yard is not at street level and is all of 15x15. It was
exceptionally pretty according to the neighbors when the daffodils and tulips
were out. Then the weather got really nice and the grass went up. Other parts
of the yard are veggie garden and I have had wheat growing for feeding
chickens, so it struck most passersby as in keeping with historical usage.

I agree with Curly. Stay busy doing "something", and every time thoughts about
pain in your wrist pop up, put them out of your mind. It won't be easy at
first, but the more you put something out of your mind, the easier it gets.
Remember the principle of building good habits: "Try and fail, try and fail,
try and succeed." You want to replace the habit of thinking about the pains you
have with the habit of ignoring the pains you have.
Hope this helps,
Gerry

.
Run a choke cable from the flipper valve on the engine air intake, to the cab.
Wind the engine up in a low gear and start closing the flipper valve,
restricting the air to the engine. Might work.
