There is some rust through in the very front of the rockers where they face the
wheel well. Inside of the rockers is fine, jack points are good. I just need to
seal up the opening to prevent future corrosion, that’s all.

I’ll fog the inside of the rockers with something like bar oil or a rust
preventative then cover the opening with a patch using seam sealer to seal it
up good and tight.

[MBZ] AC success

2019-06-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Saturday and yesterday I finished the reseal of the compressor, installed
that, vacuumed the system for 30 minutes, and then put a small amount of
propane / butane blend and then pressurized up to 150 psi with CO2.
Checked around with the sniffer for leaks, and noted a leak at the
compressor shaft seal and small leak (still) from the evaporator.

The shaft seal leaking was expected, typically they need to run-in a bit to
fully seat. I had one more can of leak sealer to address the evaporator.

Bled off the test charge, installed a new receiver / dryer, vacuum again
for thirty minutes, then attempted to charge the system with r134. First
can goes in liquid, engine off, once that is mostly into the system, right
the can and then start the engine so compressor can suck in more juice.
Now I've got intermittent compressor engagement. KLIMA finally decided it
was done playing. I'm not sure if the relay is bad, or an input is bad.
Spent some time futzing with it, no joy, so I took the bypass relay and
wiring that I made up for The White Whale KLIMA and installed that into
this '95 E300. Lost more time, I was too hasty and pulled out the pins
from the White Whale KLIMA socket before I noted which went where (only
three pins are used), so I had to search around for that info. Found it on
Peach Parts.

Finally got the KLIMA bypass going, and proceeded with charging the system,
then installed the leak sealer. Ran the AC for another 20 plus minutes per
the leak sealer instructions, and then checked again for leaks with my
sniffer. No leaks detected anywhere, so I think I've finally got this one
sorted. I do need to set up the transmission kick-down jumper, to restore
that function.

I bought mine on recommendation from my dad. I'd also seen lots of makers on
YouTube using them. Super handy for larger sizes where you might only need that
drill bit once in a while and the material isn't real thick.

Cliplight sealer?
I seem to recall somebody, somewhere, saying something about running it five
minutes per hour for the first few hours, recirculate the stuff and get more
sealer in the vicinity of the leak.

My plan was to go for a nice long drive, run it for 20 minutes, then run it
five minutes on and ten minutes off for the rest of the trip, but I admit I
still have never used the stuff, so all I have is theory, not results.

Yes, I don't know how I lived without them for so long. They don't grab and
bind up like regular bits when drilling larger holes, and are great in soft
materials like plexiglass.

2019-06-24 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Woger (RIP) liked the V6s, but not necessarily because of the engines, I think
it was the brakes that made him recommend we stay away from the pre-2007 W211s.
He definitely told us to stay far away from the pre-2007 W211 CDIs.

It seems like the V6 CDIs had the same balance shaft issues as the 3.5L
gassers, which would steer me towards the I-6, especially since I've always
like the smoothness of an I-6 and MBUSA finally decided to warranty the brakes.

The Dodge Cummins is a good diesel. But you'll want to install a fuel pressure
gauge and treat
it like an oil pressure gauge. This holds for all the 24-valve non-common-rail
engines.

The originals were made by Unibit.
HF used to have good sales on real Unibits.

I was an Inside Track club member in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but I
never bit on the Unibit sales, I thought they were kind of gimmicky. I think my
dad had me order a couple for him for a specific purpose and I don't remember
him complaining.

Might I suggest miracle paint or POR-15 and fiberglass. Very good repair if
welding not an option. I actually prefer this repair over welding for small

I'd take that in a flash.   GTE then verizontal paid under $3k a year
and we thought that was great.   The pubic broadcasting TV tower only
paid $1k a year.   I tried to get Pubic broadcasting to pay up and they
had a fit.

Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote on 6/22/19 8:44 AM:

The 1W and 3W transmitters and real antennae were the reasons why the old
phones had much better range. Which was necessary when they didn't have towers
every 3-5 miles.

About 15 years ago a telco wanted to put a tower at my boss' house.
I suspect he would have gone for it, but his wife told me it just wasn't worth
having a tower on the property for $850 a month. So the farmer across the road
leased them a tower spot and she got a tower almost as close for free.

$10k a year for a cell tower that blasts the radiation far over my head?
(signal strength is higher 500 yards from a tower than 200 yards away)
That's a $20k E class in two years, a $20k G wagen in two more years, a $30k E
class (trade the one you got 4 years ago) at the six year mark...

it. If the auxiliary pump fails it can poof the ACC controls - does that sound
familiar? Don’t these engineers learn from their previous experiences?

I’ll do that this morning.

I am surprised that the auxiliary pump will run after the car is shut off.
Apparently it’s to circulate coolant when the engine is hot to equalize the
temperature. At least that’s what I’m guessing. The brain box blower also runs
for a bit after the car is shut off as well.

Weird, because after you shut the car down you hear all this stuff running and
you’re wondering why….

This 99 inline 6 turbo in the $500E300 has 326kmi and doesn’t seem to burn or
blow much oil that I can tell so I guess it is a decent engine. Plenty
powerful. I had to deal with the goobered up EGR and I take but that’s sort of
a maintenance issue.

Jim,

Is that because loss of fuel pressure means loss of lubrication of the
injection pump (which would cause damage)?

I sand the rusted area and if I have time I thoroughly de-rust with naval jelly
which takes multiple applications over a 24 hour period to really clean it up.
I then paint the por-15 over the repair area making sure to get some on back
surface of hole edges. While por-15 still wet I impregnate the fiberglass patch
with por using a cheap chip brush and apply to the repair area. I dab it with
the brush or gloved fingers to get it flat over the repair area. Once dry, I
sand and reapply por-15 or another layer of por impregnated fiberglass as
necessary. It creates a very solid and long lasting repair. Once all done and
dry I spray the hell out of the back side of the repair with fluid film.

Indeed, what are they? Please enlighten us.

I see "boosters" advertised by a company named "weboost". They provide a
very nice plug-and-play solution, but their products run around $450.00

I did a quick search on-line and found the page https://www.weboost.com/
is titled "Wilson Cell Phone Boosters | Wilson Boosters", so apparently
they are the same thing, or at least related. It turns out Wilson has the
website https://www.wilsonsignalbooster.com/, and their web page also
lists weboost boosters.

At https://www.weboost.com/boosters/vehicle-car, they list

Users Max Gain Uplink Output

For trucks (https://www.weboost.com/boosters/vehicle-truck)

Users Max Gain Uplink Output

Drive Sleek OTR $279.99 Single 23 dB not listed

Drive 4G-X$449.99 Multi 50 dB not listed

They also have boosters for fixed locations, like homes and offices. The
difference in all of these appears to be different antennas suited to the
particular application.

If you are looking to buy one, https://cellphonesignalbooster.us has a
Fourth of July sale which will save you $10.00.

And, finally, I found on Wilson's website:

 Wilson Electronics, weBoost & WilsonPro

Wilson Electronics is one of the best known names in cell
phone signal boosters and a pioneering force in the signal
booster industry. As cell signal booster technology has
progressed throughout the years, Wilson Electronics has been
there to help consumers and businesses get better cell signal
 and faster data speeds.

In 2015, Wilson Electronics renamed it's [sic] consumer brand
to weBoost, and has been developing commercial and industrial
level professional boosters under the name WilsonPro. The
Wilson Electronics cell phone booster brand is still well
known throughout the industry, especially as older boosters
still bear the name, but the weBoost name is starting to gain
 traction.

If you're looking for a Wilson Electronics signal booster,
then you'll want to shop either for a weBoost consumer cell
phone signal booster or a WilsonPro signal booster, or please
 contact us for assistance.

Subject: [MBZ] AC success

Saturday and yesterday I finished the reseal of the compressor,
installed
that, vacuumed the system for 30 minutes, and then put a small amount
of
propane / butane blend and then pressurized up to 150 psi with CO2.
Checked around with the sniffer for leaks, and noted a leak at the
compressor shaft seal and small leak (still) from the evaporator.

The shaft seal leaking was expected, typically they need to run-in a
bit to
fully seat. I had one more can of leak sealer to address the
evaporator.

Bled off the test charge, installed a new receiver / dryer, vacuum
again
for thirty minutes, then attempted to charge the system with r134.
First
can goes in liquid, engine off, once that is mostly into the system,
right
the can and then start the engine so compressor can suck in more
juice.
Now I've got intermittent compressor engagement. KLIMA finally
decided it
was done playing. I'm not sure if the relay is bad, or an input is
bad.
Spent some time futzing with it, no joy, so I took the bypass relay
and
wiring that I made up for The White Whale KLIMA and installed that
into
this '95 E300. Lost more time, I was too hasty and pulled out the
pins
from the White Whale KLIMA socket before I noted which went where
(only
three pins are used), so I had to search around for that info. Found
it on
 Peach Parts.

Finally got the KLIMA bypass going, and proceeded with charging the
system,
then installed the leak sealer. Ran the AC for another 20 plus
minutes per
the leak sealer instructions, and then checked again for leaks with
my
sniffer. No leaks detected anywhere, so I think I've finally got this
one
sorted. I do need to set up the transmission kick-down jumper, to
restore
 that function.

Yes. With the exception of the inline Bosch P7100 pump in the 96-98.5 12-valve
engines,
which is lubricated by engine oil, _all_ pre-common-rail engines use a
fuel-lubed rotary pump.
They are destroyed in seconds if fuel flow stops.

_Every_ such 24-valve engine I know of, owned by people of my acquaintance, has
needed
a new injection pump at least once. Running out of fuel will do it, as will a
clogged fuel filter
or a failing lift pump. My 1997 is immune to this problem, which runs in the
$2-3k range.

That would be the only way I get a 107 into the GWN.

I am heading back there for a few weeks. I expect no tomfoolery to happen. I
still have a large agglomeration of Benz pahhtz to peddle. It would really be
nice if I could find a home for the SD before I leave. Tabs are expired and I
am sure the parking gestapo will want to tag and tow it. I think I will donate
it to charity before that happens. At least that way some CoParts buyer will
give it a home and I get a tax write off.

I did offload the om617 with trans last night. Guy is building a jeep crawler.
He took much more with him from my CL offerings. Even paid me for the engine
lift we used to get it onto his trailer. More room in the garage and basement
now. Soon SWMBA will swoop down and put the homestead on the market for seven

Re: [MBZ] Bad Diesel?

2019-06-24 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
What sticks in my head from discussions at the time on this list, was that a
person should avoid anything prior to the 2004/5 examples. Something about
common rail and CDI, magic pixie dust and low sulfur fuel.

Why this sticks is that the family took a cross nation trip the summer of 2004
and I drove out in the E300D. While stopped in the Charleston area for a week
or so I had to take the car in to the dealer and got to look at the current
crop of diesels. There was a strong mental note made at that time that what I
was seeing was not the good stuff, but that the fall would have those models
with the “proper” diesel engines

Then you need something beyond a fuel pressure gauge. You need something
that will shut the engine down if the fuel pressure drops below the
acceptable level.

Easy enough to do on a gas engine, or at least it used to be easy. If I
recall the simple answer was to put the electrical power feed for the
ignition into a scenario where it would be cut off if the oil pressure
sender did not indicate pressure. I think the circuit is open when the
sender says there is oil pressure and closes when the pressure drops and
permits the sender to complete the circuit to ground. Not sure how well
any of this would work with modern computer controlled cars. Might
create troubles?

I rarely use that option. I may have to reload the page 5-6 times
but I add sites one or two at a time based on domain. Often just
the hosting domain and their "cds" (contend delivery system) is
enough for the page to work. There are times, though, that it
takes a lot more to get basic functionality - like a link that can
be clicked.

> > Then I have scripts running from 35 - 45 different web sites.

I actually have written javascript. And HTML. And CSS. Always
in Emacs (plain text editor). I do NOT claim to understand it
all, but I guess I mostly understand whats going on. I have also
used the extension "Stylish" to alter how a page is shown. The
one I'm thinking of right now is Ebay. Without javascript, there
is a partly opaque object over the whole page saying "you need
javascript". I change the size an position of that overlay so it
no longer gets in the way. Basic browsing in ebay works without
javascript.

I do mutter unkind thinks about the sites and people who wrote
them that end up preventing me from reading and using the website
as _I_ want to. HTML and CSS alone will do 95% of what javascript
is used for. In addition, I have meter internet so I really don't
like downloading up to 10 MB of javascript code just to follow links
on the page. grr.

Thanks Wilton!

Nice cold AC for the ride home after work.

94 degrees ambient, about 105 deg in the car after sitting in the parking lot
but shaded for the last hour of work. Once I got onto the freeway, vent
temperature dropped to 44 deg or less. It will freeze you right out now.

When I have The White Whale apart, wonder if I should install a parallel flow
condenser to improve performance? If one shows up at the pick-n-pull...

Our '90 E300D/2.5 Turbo was R12.

Our '93 E300D/2.5 Turbo is R134.

I cannot say what a '92 would have.

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** Diesel vs. Electric

2019-06-24 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Equally, I raise the point that, nuclear, solar, geothermal, wind, hydro,
all come with their own set of environmental impacts, which in some cases
are extremely far reaching.
The main difference as I see it between Diesel and EV is simply the poorly
accounted long term impacts of the manufacture and support of EV. The
"emissions" are displaced away from the vehicle, however, the environmental
impacts are just as real, perhaps more long lasting, [in some ] and give a
false indication of being "clean".
