[MBZ] OT - Dumping ground

2019-07-11 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
SWMBA is in a tizzy to replace the POS y2k Cheep Ground Turkey that she would
not invest a penny into making a safe vehicle. Now the thing is an unknown as
to whether it will function from day to day. No surprise, but I keep my mouth
shut.

The selection of viable vehicle here is overly limited. I grow very tired of
looking at the same set of cars and SUV day after day. I did take a test drive
in one car, but it sold long before SWMBA could find time to get to the dealer
to make a deal. Parking lot tested a bunch more cars that fit the
claustrophobic parameter she has set out. That means I sat in the cars in each
available position to see if I actually could fit and be able to drive without
crippling pain after half an hour. There are almost no cars that fit
requirements. When did leg room and foot space get deleted?

I did figure out the Canada and Alaska seem to be the dumping ground for green
vehicles. Not the battery or hybrid, but colored cars. There were a great
many green examples of cars in Vancouver BC on my most recent visit, no matter
what the marque. There seems to be an excess of green in all manner and hue
available in ANC as well. Per Capita, green is a very popular color here.
Trying to find a green car in PNW was akin to M$ making a stable OS and
distributing it free.

[MBZ] OM602.962 Serpentine belt tensioner

2019-07-11 Thread Craig via Mercedes
So I find I need a serpentine belt tensioner for our '93 E300D/2.5 Turbo.

The old part says it's 601 202 06 28, but I cannot find that on the 'net.

I went to the on-line EPC and finally found the engine parts at
http://mbepc.net/1/m/om/502/602962 and the BELT TIGHTENER, ENGINE COOLING
SYSTEM Schema at http://mbepc.net/1/m/om/502/602962/0/20/045.

[Thank you, Dan, for mentioning it in one of your emails!]

There are multiple parts on that schema, but the one which looks the
closest is A 601 200 17 73. That has several hits. Some of the parts are
Uro (which is the only thing Rock Auto has and which I reject out-of-hand,
others are Febi, Meyle, Ina (which, on Pelican Parts, has a higher rating
then the first Febi or Meyle) and even genuine Mercedes if you want to pay
a premium.

I'm looking at Auto Haus Arizona (Phoenix) and Pelican Parts (Harbor
City, CA) since they are closer to me than others.

So what brand of parts should I go for?

Nope. No standard height. But my experience is that 14 to 20
inches [35 to 50 cm] from the ground to the top of the ball is the
most likely range. And I prefer the ball a bit high more often
than I want it low.

> Craig wrote:

I like ETrailer - good info, text transcriptions of their
information videos, real information on their product - sometimes
more than the manufacturers websit, helpful people, and if you
happen to be near St. Louis MO, the have a will-call desk. They
don't always have what I need, but I do try to take my business to
them first.

1-7/8, 2, and 2-5/16 are the ball sizes. U-Haul uses only 2", I'm
pretty sure. 2 inch balls can be rated for quite a range in load
capacity, so be sure to get one "big" enough for your loads.

Also make sure the ball shank/bolt diameter matches the hole in
the ball mount. There are bushings to allow mounting in a hole
that's too big. I think shank sizes vary from 5/8" to 1.5".

Something like this can be mounted either way so it has a bit of a
of a drop or a very slight rise.

Here is a kit with ball, mount, pin, etc.
https://www.etrailer.com/Ball-Mounts/Curt/C45534.html

I like putting a rubber cap over the ball for storage 'cause I
always keep the ball well greased.

Fun cars, but unless it's rust free, not worth the effort or money to restore.

Mine was a blast, but was badly rusted from the beltline down -- doors, floors,
trunk, fenders. Never got better than 17 mpg on the highway (at 80 mph), in
normal driving it was more like 12.

Lots of upkeep too -- 27 grease fittings that need greasing every couple months
or they squeak. Terrible AC to, it was really a ThermoKing or some other
aftermarket that barely kept the car cool, and the heater valves and levers are
always dead.

I only paid $50 for mine, so it was worth it, but I'd not bother to restore one
unless it was a 6.3, and I'm not wealthy enough for that.

I had one old laptop that looked like it wouldn't turn on, until you looked

This ML I have has 300some kmi on it but the PO told me the engine only
had 60kmi on it, so if I go to sell it I will say it is a "survivor with

No. The chassis has 374k on it. Leave it there and disclose the miles on the

Again, I fall back to the logic of if I put a crate engine or a rebuilt engine

Not hardly.

True, but changing the odometer to match the engine’s mileage rather than the
total mileage of the chassis is what I would considering misleading, whether
the car is exempt from mileage disclosure or not.

Would you prefer to buy a car with 160k on the clock or 274k on the clock? If
they put a crate engine in it then logic would dictate they roll the odometer

Agreed, they are good. I bought a hitch for my Volvo from them, bolted

harness that plugged in to the factory taillight connectors, so no

That works, or if you want flexibility this is a bit uglier and a bit more
costly:
https://www.amazon.com/MaxxHaul-70067-8-Position-Adjustable-Mount/dp/B008CE06ZA

If you don't already have the ball you might as well buy a full set, mounted
ball and hitch pin.

This is about the cheapest I know of today:
https://www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/automotive/towing-cargo-management/trailer-hitches-balls/towsmart-reg-class-iii-standard-ball-mount-starter-kit-w-2-ball/1228/p-147118397-c-1527167451361.htm

This is $24.47 at both Wally World and large wimmen world, and I believe it's
made in USA.
I was going to recommend a Curt Euroball, even going to offer you one of mine,
but Curt only makes Euroballs for 1 1/4".
https://www.amazon.com/CURT-45056-Loaded-Ball-Mount/dp/B001EOYK98

Euroball, anybody want one of these for $15 plus postage?

Re: [MBZ] Trailer Hitch Ball Mount

2019-07-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Fred and I rented a tow dolly for my '98 Jetta that we pulled with my '03
Ranger. It vibrated badly if we went over 65mph. Turns out the tow dolly wanted
a 2" ball, the Ranger had a 1 7/8" (I think thats the next size down) ball.
Oops. Probably was also a problem when I was towing the '84 190D but on that
tow the weather was bad so I never wanted to go faster than 60mph anyway...

I have some straight (well they have a bit of drop, maybe an inch but
the ball is pretty much in line with the receiver) mounts with 2
different size balls I use on the trucks, can switch them depending on
what I need.  Standard ball is 2", i have this little boat trailer I

ball on it.  The ML hitch is fairly high, so this "straight" ball holder

Re: [MBZ] Sellers

2019-07-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, Dave is a great seller. I’ve worked with him directly for some time, so I
never really notice his stuff when he posts in a forum.

Parting out a car is a PITA and rarely ever worth the time and effort. Once you
get the desirable/expensive stuff off and sold, it takes forever (if that) to
move the rest. I found this out when I parted out the 95 S500 W140 coupe. I
still have stuff laying around from that…

I've dealt with a couple sellers (like Dave Hendy) that are right on the
ball, and I've been a seller, so I know both sides. Making time to sell
parts and ship them is sometimes tough, I get that.

Ideally the car / seller would be closer so I could just drive over and get
my stuff, not an option in this case.

Guy on PeachParts is parting out a '95 E300. He is semi-engaged, but I'm
starting to grow weary.

I've sent him questions and a big long list of stuff I'd like, he has only
answered one question and provided no response to my requests for parts.

I guess he's finding out that parting out a car is a pain in the butt.
