Subject: [MBZ] OM601, OM602, OM603 belt tensioner bearing info
Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2019 09:00:52 -0600
Sender: "Mercedes"
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.11; rv:52.0)
Gecko/20100101 PostboxApp/6.1.10

The bearing is FAG 565592   (previous posting had the number wrong)

ID: 20mm
OD: 42MM
Width: 29/30

Mine measured 29.3mm

Meyle number: 014 098 0020

The problem is that none appear to be available, except a few in yurp
for something in the area of 50 euro or 50 Bp when I can buy the whole
assembly for $45 from FCP.

I took Jim's solution and ordered 2 6004-2RS FAG bearings for under $12
delivered.

From my file of the things I have done:

12 Jul 2019
Done - Call AutohausAZ, 1-800-240-4620: When will order ship? They said
the tensioner will come from one of their "sister"
warehouses and may not arrive until Wednesday/Thursday
Done - Ordered from AutohausAZ:
Genuine Mercedes Bolt Cover at Center Bolt of Belt Tensioner Lever
P/N: 6012020622 $ 1.44
Febi Bilstein Belt Tensioner Lever P/N: FB-6012001773 $44.21
  Parts Total $45.65
USPS Priority Mail $ 9.99
  Tax $ 0.00
Total $55.64

The tensioner lever does come with the bearing installed.

I don't recall what the part looked like, and I did not take pictures of
the part and how it went together. Perhaps looking for the part number
listed above on AutohausAZ's website will yield a picture.

I do recall your email about the bearings and put the information in a
file here on my system, but I cannot find it now.

I already have the radiator in and the other things assembled, so I
am very hesitant to take the car apart and photograph what the part looks
like.

However, I may still have the old tensioner arm (the one which came on
the car). If I find it, I can take a picture of it and post it to the
list -- tomorrow, I need to get to bed now.

2020-03-20 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
yeah, the actual bearing is 5935xx, and somewhere between 26 and 30 mm
wide.   It is unobtanium.   Last year I found 2 FAG 6004s on fleabay for
cheap. THose went in the 87.  I made a center spacer from the shell of
the old bearing.   6004s are only 12mm wide.   I was thinking the spacer
was about 3 mm.

Since I found one with a good bearing, i'll use it, but will look to
procure a couple 6004s and get the next one ready to go in.

Yes, I think a good bronze bushing may do better.  But I have no way to
machine one and I bet you can't buy one the right size.

fleabay has some double roller bearings the right ID and OD, but 30 mm
wide.  might work, but they are $50 to $120, so you'd be as well of to
just buy the new arm for $70.   I think I got the 2 6004s last year for $8.

IIRC, for the 602 and 603, it was a double wide bearing, which was
expensive and hard to find. However, someone here pointed me to using two
regular bearings - which worked fine.
However, that use of a roller bearing is one of the worst cases for them -
frequent partial rotation/ I wonder if a nice brass bushing wouldn't do
better in that location?
Is there an engineer in the house???

Found my box of used belt tensioner arms.   I had marked on the box need
2x 6004 bearings.   I found one in there with a good bearing I was
pretty sure I had salvaged from a 124 with a 606 in it.   I will put
that one on tomorrow, then I don't have to mess with trying to find
6004, or wait a week to get bearings or a $70 arm.

Want to do the tensioner arm, the fan clutch and change coolant all at once.

Maybe late 606 or turbo 606 have that different tensionerarm?

I found a youboob about changing the bearing, but he does not say where
he got the bearing.  calls himself turbodieselweasel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1Cc7XSHZlA
I don't need a how to change the bearing, I need a "Where the H can you
BUY the special roller bearing for it."   FAG does not even list the
number in their crossover catalogs.   No bearing house can find it.  MB
does not have it.    Easy enough to change, if only you could find the
bearing.

crap, I can't find the bearing number.   I changed one about a year ago
and posted the bearing number.   I think  it was 6004.  but I may be
confusing that with the driveshaft carrier bearing.   I changed that
about the same time.

6004 is 20x42x12mm

Carrier bearing I found is 6006-2rs   30x55x13

so it is 2 6004 I need to rebuild one of the old tensioners.   Wonder
who has a couple for cheep?   Local would be best!

Re: [MBZ] OT: C-41 process film/scan services

2020-03-20 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I used to do quite a bit of film work at home, including C41 and E6
development. C41 is very simple to do at home, even easier than black and
white in some ways, since its completely standardized and little you can do
to vary the output.

Lots of kits are available:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/For-Color-Film/ci/595/N/4288586380

The biggest challenge with C41 is most processes require temperature
control at 100F. This means you need a good way to control temperature...
a sous vide might do the trick these days. Or look for a use Jobo film
processor, I have a few of them.

Then you need to scan, which isn't as easy as it seems. Color accuracy is
difficult and varies by film brand.

Heres a frame from one of the last rolls I shot:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/jaimekop/41987615885/in/dateposted-public/

Most of the photos on flickr were taken on film. I haven't had much time
for it lately.

Dwanyes does a decent job, but also scratches negatives a lot. Their
quality is very hit and miss.

Good luck,
Jaime

[MBZ] Belt tensioner arm OM603, vs OM602, VS OM606

2020-03-20 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Just got the belt tensioner arm from AZ for the 91 OM602.   If is a 606
part number which autohaus shows as correct for the 91.  However it does
not have the same roller bearing in the middle as I am used to with the
603 in 124 and 126.   THis has a much larger hole and what looks like
spring steel inserts over front and rear bushings, where the bearing
should be.   It also looks deeper front to back than the 603 arm.   It
would require a much larger diameter bolt.

Anyone had the arm off a 91 or newer OM602 turbo?   Does it have the
bearing retained by a internal circlip?  (roller bearing about 1/8"
wider than 2 of ball bearings of the same od/id as the roller bearing
that can't be purchased separately.   I wanna say it was 2 6004 bearings
with a spacer that I used last time to avoid buying the whole arm.

I don't want to take it apart and have the car sit for a week while the
right arms gets here.   This would take a completely different bolt
also.  Much larger diameter.  I;m trying to figure out if this is just
wrong, or if this engine has been updated and this is the right arm.

THanks for any ideas.

Sorry, I presumed it came in glass bottles, since I have never bought any.

Plastic also absorbs UV, so my statement below is still accurate.

There is likely a sizeable body of law regarding access to beaches and coastal
islands that has been built up since WW-2 in coastal states; especially in

Under the current circumstances I would bet that they can get away with it.

Re: [MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT: C-41 process film/scan services

2020-03-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I tried color printing once with one of those tubular processors. The ones
where you exposed the paper, put the paper in this plastic tube that had a
light lock on one end, and you poured chemicals in and out.

The results were less than stellar. What little color film processing I needed
to went Kodak. The color printing I left to a couple different labs I used, one
that was really good in Milwaukee, but they’re gone now. Sucks, because you
could send them just about anything with instructions on how you wanted it
printed (burn in here, mask here, etc., etc.) and they would do it.

Oh definitely, it's easy to see why digital killed film on cost alone.

There's just something a bit nostalgic that I like about the look of a
film image. If I do more I'll likely go back to B&W. I still have a full
darkroom packed away in the basement -- enlarger, safelights, tanks,
etc.

2020-03-20 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
C-41 is easier (fewer steps) than E-4 or E-6. IIRC, the temps are a little
less critical as well - since you can correct in the printing. A JOBO water
tray processor makes it easy. However, the life of the chemistry is limited
once it's mixed up, so unless you shoot enough to exhaust the chemistry,
you'll probably be better off sending it out. Given the limited demand, and
inflation, I'm not surprised at the cost.

Re: [MBZ] OT: C-41 process film/scan services

2020-03-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
No, but I have this big-ass power supply I use to drive my CNC machine
that I bought for $30 at the electronics surplus shop, came out of one
of those big film processor machines they used to have a Walgreens, etc.

I think my uncle used to process color print film when he worked for a
TV station as their photographer back in the early 70s, or it might have
just been slides, and I vaguely recall a buddy of mine in high school
would do it too, either at home in a darkroom closet (which really
annoyed his mom) or at the camera shop where he worked.  I don't know
any details (it has been awhile! and I probably never did anyway...)

You’ll drop a small fortune for chemicals anyway, so just bite the bullet and
pay someone to process it for you if you’re going to use it.

I did E-4 and E-6 because it wasn’t difficult to do in small batches, and I
also tinkered a lot with infrared Ektachrome, which Kodak and their labs would
not process, you had to do it yourself. Something about the processing that
exhausted the chemicals much quicker than regular E-4 or E-6 if I recall.

Anyone do this and have any more affordable options? Or done their own

Folks,

They want to close Tybee Island to residents only but have not ... the beach is

Some bars etc are still open which maybe should not be

Here is the official story

Here is a more complicated version:

City Council - my synopsis - March 18, 2020
FINAL DECISION: All businesses close at 11 pm, except restaurants may sell

But you cannot aim the light at the bottle and see -- glass absorbs UV --
you have to pour some out and aim the light directly at the liquid.

Re: [MBZ] OT: A contrarian view on COVID-19, plus good news - there's a CURE!

2020-03-20 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
That rings true. I would add two things.

Our hospital has a test that will go on line Monday and has a 24h or less
turnaround. This will help us move patients through the system and test
exposed healthcare workers more rapidly. Many other hospitals are doing the
same. California and the feds are supporting more on-demand community level
testing capacity, which is good, but late.

There is an ELISA for prior exposure. Cannot recall where it has been
developed. Spain perhaps. It was in the comments on tbe skeptic article.
Random sampling studies of the population would be required to get a
snapshot. I am sure someone will do that study eventually. Knowing who is
immune would help us assign caregivers within the hospital also. Lots to
learn about the strength of immunity resulting from acute infection and how
rapidly this immunity develops.

The town councils made these decisions.  They will put cops at the
bridges and enforce the bans.  It's easy to do with choke points.  Now
whether this is (US) constitutional/legal for domestic travel or not is
another question since martial law or whatever has not been declared,
but I guess that remains to be sorted out.

you have to pour some out and aim the light directly at the liquid.

Re: [MBZ] OT: A contrarian view on COVID-19, plus good news - there's a CURE!

2020-03-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Got this a few minutes ago, from a relative of an in-law who is an
infectious disease doc in Denver CO:

Notes from the field
I thought I would update my Facebook friends on a few things about
COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 in our community. There is a lot of confusing
information out there.
1) First, I want to say that cases in our metro-Denver area are increasing,
but there is almost no testing available for people who are not sick enough
to be in the hospital, so the numbers in the news do not reflect reality.
There are likely thousands of cases around us of varying severity, and
numbers will continue to increase before it gets better. The timing depends
on how well we continue with “social distancing” and protecting our
community. I have been keeping up with the cases at the 2 hospitals that I
work in, and with cases in other local hospitals. While it is true that
most people with COVID-19 can “ride it out” at home, about 14% of adults
will have a severe disease leading to respiratory failure, kidney failure,
prolonged illness and even death. There are several patients in the
50-year-old range with illness like this locally and their chance of full
recovery is very unlikely. They do not have chronic health conditions. This
is not always a “mild illness” and does not only cause death in the
elderly. The good news is that we are not seeing many older patients in the
hospital, so it seems we are doing a good job of protecting our elderly
neighbors!
2) The lack of testing is a huge problem. Public Health has stopped testing
in our area because an outbreak has already been established and they are
limited in resources. ERs are no longer testing people who are not sick
enough to be admitted, because they are already so busy caring for patients
with this disease as well as influenza and pneumonia and other illness that
circulate at this time. Doctors' offices do not have the protective
equipment (PPE) to protect their staff when testing patients, and PPE is in
short supply across the country. The test kits are in low supply. Because
of this, there is no way to know who many are infected.
3) Hospitals are already stressed. Hospital docs, nurses, and other staff
are accustomed to stressful situations, but I can feel the anxiety around
me. The patients are sick, and it is taking too long (4-5 days) to get the
COVID test back. While medical workers typically are reasonable about
“germaphobia”, and while we are washing hands and using proper PPE when
caring for COVID-19 patients; we are touching keyboards, phones and
doorknobs that are touched by hundreds of people a day. The biggest source
of stress is that we know we don’t have enough PPE to deal with the
outbreak. We will run out of masks, gloves, etc., and then our patients may
not get the care they need, or healthcare workers might get sick. Things in
the hospital have changed. Exterior doors are locked, chairs in sitting
areas are gone, salad bars are gone… it feels a little apocalyptical, but
the changes are necessary. Docs who care for these patients (ER docs,
critical care docs, Pulmonologists, and infectious Disease docs) are
getting hundreds of emails daily. These are emails with case reports,
potential treatments, numbers of deaths and cases... There is no way to
keep up with them all, but we try to read them because we don’t want to
miss something important that might help our patients. Patients are calling
with many questions… a lot has changed. Don’t feel sorry for us though. We
signed up for this, and I think I speak for most hospital providers when I
say that we want to be doing what we do. I am so impressed by the medical
community around me. Everyone is invested in figuring out how to help
patients and in supporting each other.
4) With all this being said, I do not want to sound dismal. We are much
better equipped than Italy as we have more Critical Care beds and
ventilators, so the mortality will be much lower in the US. Denver truly
has some of the best doctors and nurses in the country, probably because
this is a great place to live! Whether it is due to herd immunity, or a
reprieve in summer, or new treatments (a vaccine will take a while); we
will get through this. This is not nearly as bad as measles, smallpox,
Spanish flu, etc. Past experience with those helps us know what to do.
Someday, we will reach a new normal

The boy says they are trying to figure out telemedicine for his clinic at
Stanford so they can do remote “visits.” Challenging. He said it was starting
to get pretty busy there.

The local hospital doing testing is now triaging tests on patients due to lack
of tests and materials and equipment. Yesterday there were only 30-40 cases in
the state but supplies are already getting stretched.

Interesting I have heard nothing at all about conditions south of the southern
border. Canada has locked down their border but I haven’t seen anything about
spread there.

A guy I know in Peru posted pics of Cusco, normally a bustling city, now
deserted streets, no one out and about. They seem to be taking it seriously.
That’s good I guess.
