Re: [MBZ] 124 brakes

2020-03-21 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
As I was suiting up to go on some covid room this morning the wife shoots
me a video of the 123 rear driver side wheel with smoke pouring out from
under the car and calls me to tell me the car is on fire. They were already
at their destination and it didnt look like a real fire plus what could
possibly burn up back there other than a brake. Against medical advice she
drove it home on side streets until the burning stench was too great
whereupon she, the kids and the dog set out on foot for the final three
miles or so with the violins etc, leaving the car in a parking spot, which
rules are not being enforced luckily for the moment. Anyway I went down and
the rotor is scored pretty good but still a bit of pad left. The seals on
both sides appear to have been hit with a screwdriver and the outer seal
was leaking fluid. Weird. Anyway I put it back together and drove home.
Pedal is squishy but was rock hard by the time I arrived; presumably air
inside getting hot. I am not into rebuilding calipers and everything is
closed so I will try to get a couple rebuilt ones from the bev hills dealer
or Tom or rock auto. I was more upset to learn the dog had somehow during
this excursion managed to chew off both seatbelts for the 3rd seat, so I
will be replacing those also. And the nice factory tool roll tie tabs got
eaten also. They and the seatbelts were all pretty much perfect. And the dog
seems to have peed inside somehow, which smells about like you would
expect. Does anyone else have the problem that their car only seems to get
destroyed when their wife drives it? I may be dropping it off for a full
interior redo at some point soon. Leather is sounding better and better.
The dog will ride in a crate from now on, even if he is too big for the
biggest one that will fit in the tailgate. I already have a new carpet but
keep getting distracted by coronavirus and burning brake calipers. I am
also trying to tig braze a vband onto a turbo compressor housing with some
stuff called hts 2000. Not as simple as it might appear; maybe my map torch
tip is messed up because it takes forever to get hot enough. To top it off
I dont have a functional car to drive tomorrow because I left the 420 where
the wagon was. Tried to use a kids scooter to get down there again but
exceeded max scooter weight making front wheel plastic tie rod toe angle
seriously erratic and steering about impossible. All I need is to die
exceeding max takeoff weight on a kids scooter trying to fix a 35year old
brake caliper during an epidemic. Not even any place to get your hair cut
here; we have an oyster 76 somewhere and if I can find it the hair is all
coming down to #2 length immediately.

[MBZ] Yay me, sorta — 211 airmatic

2020-03-21 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I decided today to go spend some time trying to figure out why this $500E500 is
all squatted down. I took off the air pump to check it out (which I need not
have done, but I wanted to see if it was banged up from the off-road excursion.
It was fine.

Turns out it was getting no electrons. FUSE was fine. A bit of research showed
there is a relay in the electrical box. Pulled that and tested it, seemed to be
kaput (0 ohms) across the actuation contacts. So I jumpered the 12V contacts
and it ran!!! So the relay is bad.

I had the car off the ground, wheels dangling but it didn’t seem to pump up any
struts. There was air coming out of the intake side. This might indicate blown
o-rings maybe so it might need a rebuild.

I put the computer on and did a diagnostic on the airmatic after I dropped it
back down. It had a bunch of codes, one being the solenoid which I guess
controls air going out? A couple of the struts which are not totally collapsed
were showing 5+bar pressure which is about a third of what they are supposed to
be. The other two were much lower. I tried to run pressurization on each strut
but I think it needs to be off the ground, or if the air is not actually being
solenoided out I guess it won’t work.

Got dark and late so I came in. I’ll have to dig into it a bit more.

Oh, I disconnected the 2 rear air lines at the pump distribution block and put
compressed air in them while the car was off the ground but no change. Maybe
there’s some other logic or components in the system they won’t allow that , I
don’t know. I’ll research it all more.

2020-03-21 Thread Clay via Mercedes
The clock in the SL runs but there is a discontinuity in drive wheel, so it
does not keep time. The SDL and SD both had working clocks when sold. I have
not used a wrist mounted time piece for about 27 years and the one I last saw
was a Disney Winnie the Pooh watch in a desk drawer last time I was in SEA. I
will at times refer to the chronometer on the pocket communication device which
at times will engage in glutteal connections with unknown people.

Alaska is running out of swabs. I do not think that is a giant issue, as I
suspect the damn things will not fix the infection in a productive manner.
Fairbanks has shut itself off from the world, Anchorage just decided to suggest
everybody stay home for a few weeks. BTW, AK has a population density of 0
people per kilometer. Russia has 8 people per kilometer. Pretty close to that
of Idaho.

#2 boy is flying up from PDX this afternoon. He saw most of the flights
leaving had an average of 5 people on them. His flight to ANC is packed with
145. He will be isolated for 14 days. His mother is not willing to give him a
hug when he arrives. Maybe we use a mylar blanket and bundle him up in the

Inflammatory content like W123s with stacks through the hood?

Or mini-splits with refrigerant that could be contributing to
global warming?

Or green is a good color for a car?

Or islands closing borders?

Or C41 is easier than E6 processing?

Re: [MBZ] Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-03-21 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
The 240D used the 722.117 (W 4 B 025) automatic.

The 300D Turbo used the 722.315 (W 4 B 040) automatic.

The trailing number (040) refers to the maximum torque that the transmission
can handle. A 240D automatic will be destroyed fairly quickly by the additional
"power" emerging from the 3L turbo engine.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: Hey, here's a noncontroversial Benz idea

2020-03-21 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I like watches. My fave is a Citizen solar pilot's watch in titanium, with a
slide-rule bezel. I need to send it in for a new movement. I'm currently
wearing an Invicta titanium chronograph with an ETA movement and a carbon fiber
face. It keeps good time. My most interesting (if not very valuable) is an
original Gruen Curvex that my family gave to my dad in the early 50s. I
understand that the movement on that watch is unique in that the wheels are not
all in the same plane because of the curved case.

I have a minor obsession with accurate measuring instruments and tools.

If the sun is in the east, it's morning, in the west, it's afternoon... if
it's dark, it's night time.. close enough...

2020-03-21 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
I was wearing a Casio G-Shock for years. I am pretty rough on a watch, probably
because of the way I wear them (dominant left wrist, face on the bottom of my
wrist). I recently acquired a Fitbit Blaze, and I do like it, but it will
probably kack quickly. It doesn't seem particularly robust. I do like all the
health tracking it can do, but I do not appreciate the phone home but. I am
pretty active for a geezer after all.

I have a Wenger S.A.K. Design Quartz good to a depth of 50 m of water
which I got from my father's estate, but I damaged the flexible band
and have not taken the time to repair it so I have not been able to
wear it for a while. I do still feel inconvienced by not having it

It should bolt up straight away. If it does not, there is a "plate" on
the back of each engine to which the bellhousing bolts which you can take
from the OM616.912 to bolt onto the OM617.952. That is referenced in the
list below as 110 011 15 45.

> The 240 has manual HVAC that I want keep.

Yes, the sensible thing to do! That was one of the benefits I had when I
turned the 240D into the 240D/3.0. I did the swap primarily, though,
because the 240D automatic transmission was severely damaged deep inside
and I thought the OM616 was weak as well. I didn't want to spend $2500 to
have Ben's Workshop in Austin, TX replace the transmission and still have
the OM616.

Only thing to watch for is getting the spring on the pads installed correctly, they have to ride on the flats on the sidle of the slot in the floating half. Easy to get them in the slot, which is not good.

Re: [MBZ] Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-03-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I agree with Floyd. Unless there’s a difference in transmissions, why not just
swap the whole assembly (engine/transmission)? It’s far easier to do it that
way, too.

Everything should bolt up, I would expect. Good time to replace stuff like
motor mounts and fuel lines while you’ve got the engine out, too.

Re: [MBZ] Larry's 300D 2.5

2020-03-21 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

HI Curly,
Sorry to hear you are having more problems with "my" 300D.  I don't
recall any turbo problems, but it sat for about a year while I figured
out what to do with it.  The only way I ever checked to confirm things
were as they should be was to warm it up then do a 0-60 test looking for
around 6+ Seconds.  (I may be wrong on the # of seconds as it's been a
while since I did that test.)

I was going to adjust the ALDA at one point but the professor said the
91 ALDA did not benefit from adjusting.  Can't recall the specifics.

So the rear wheels aligned without trouble?  I know you put a lot of
work into the rear suspension!

Stay safe!

What should be next?   Turn up the alda?

The 87 300D will chirp the tires going from 1st to 2nd.   THis one is
nowhere near that.   With a missing cyl, it may never chirp the tires,
but all y'all have talked about how these are better than the 87.   So
far, I like the 87/OM603 better.

You probably have a vacuum leak somewhere. The turbo is vacuum
operated on these rather than pressure. Low vacuum equals no boost.

Re: [MBZ] 124 brakes

2020-03-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I buy those in bulk from whoever has them the cheapest. You’ll always need
them, they fit so many different models pre-2000, you know you’re going to need
some.

That’s like always having a tube of brake paste handy. The big tube from the
dealer is cheap and is a near lifetime supply.

supposed to be some kind of monitor watch.  I guess I should put a

Easy peasey. Take the wheel off, knock the pins out, pull the pads back and
compress the pistons with a C clamp. Grease up the edges and back with the
majikal MB brake paste and reassemble.

30-45 minute job of you’ve got everything there and ready to go.

I just took an assessment of my stuff and have the following parts/jobs to do:

SL500 - front shocks
E320 wagon - motor mounts, fuel filter
E320 sedan - fuel filter, wiper blade
ML500 - left front tie rod and steering rack boot

Drove the SL500 for the first time in a long time this morning to refuel it.
Looks like the headliner needs replacement. I’ll take it out and drop it off at
my upholstery guy, as he loves to do the ones when it comes to him out of the
car. I need to dig out Jim’s stuff on the low oil level sender, as it’s lit
continuously. I’m sure the little PC board needs a new set of caps.

Wish it was a little cooler outside...

Rears are identical, clean the calipers well and use some anti-sieze on the
slots to help preventing brake drag (this is a real problem on the wagon for
some reason).

Fronts are easier as it's a single piston floating caliper. Remove one slide
bolt, rotate the floating half up and remove pads, press piston back in, put
new pads in, and rotate floating half back down and install bolt.

Only thing to watch for is getting the spring on the pads installed correctly,
they have to ride on the flats on the sidle of the slot in the floating half.
Easy to get them in the slot, which is not good.

Wear sensor is very similar.

[MBZ] 124 brakes

2020-03-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
The daughter unit arrived last night to isolate with me for awhile, she
was going crazy at her place.  I had ordered a set of brake pads some
weeks ago for her 124 so I guess we will putting them on soon.
Straightforward job?  Anything much different from a 123 or 126?

[MBZ] LIST MOM was OT: other effects of wuhan CV

2020-03-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
While the subject matter of this post was not political in it’s nature, the
vehicle in which it was delivered clearly was. As a result the list member who
posted it has been placed on moderation.

This is a reminder to all that while topical posts are welcome, the vehicle in
which they are delivered is unwelcome if it is political or inflammatory in
nature. There have been numerous complaints from list members regarding the
politicizing of subject matter in recent days, and as a result the List Mom
will take a very strong position against such posts and the members who post
them.

Let’s stick to Mercedes subject matter whenever possible. If you’re going to
post something topical, be sure to read it first and remove any political or
inflammatory content. There will be no exceptions.

Thank you,

List Mom

Using a ball bearing in rocking service is bad, bad, bad. Some kind of
sleeve bearing would probably be much better. IIRC, the original 30mm
bearing just had two ball races in a single deep housing, it wasn't a
roller bearing or anything like that, which might have survived better
in rocking service.

[MBZ] OT: other effects of wuhan CV

2020-03-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

I heard last friday that a recent USAF retiree friend, who is working
at the sporting goods big box store none of us buy from in Houston.
He said he had sold 18 registered arms that day.   Saturday and Sunday
were sales of 35each day.   I've not heard since then but I gather
sales are still many times higher than normal.   I needed some caps
and stopped in the local store Wed, and it was like a zoo, and the
rack was getting bare.   See article below:  It says that in bernie's
home state sales are 40 times normal!    Think anyone there is scared
 of him?

Chinese Virus a Better Gun Salesman than Barack Obama

Well, we’ve finally found a salesman that topped Barack Obama’s ability
to drive Americans to their local gun shops: The Chinese Wuhan
Coronavirus. Even gun-hating liberals are now lining up to purchase
their first-ever gun in many places.

Some are hilariously discovering that you cannot, in fact, buy a gun
online. “You mean… Chuck Schumer…/lied to me?!/” Here’s a roundup of the
incredible demand that Americans suddenly have for firearms. And as
you’ll see from the video below, even Californians are waiting in long
lines at the gun shop!

First, gun sales have now officially doubled year-to-year. Last Monday,
the FBI reported that background checks on gun purchases have spiked by
300%. That’s creating a backlog of NICS investigations.

In terms of gun buyers, if you’ve never had a problem with a background
check, you should be good to go if you try to purchase a firearm right
now. But… if a ‘hold’ is triggered, the FBI normally takes up to three
days to investigate and determine whether that purchaser is authorized
to buy a gun or not. The FBI now says that “three days” has been
stretched out to “we’ll get back to you sometime in the future.”

While you can’t buy firearms online, you can purchase ammunition over
the internet in many states. Ammo.com has released its statistics from
the past week, and it’s pretty impressive. The site ships ammo to 47
states, excluding Alaska, Hawaii, Massachusetts and California. They
describe demand as “staggering” – like nothing they’ve ever seen previously.

Ammunition sales in Vermont and Delaware are up 4,000%. That’s not a
typo. Oklahoma, Louisiana and Mississippi sales have increased between
1,001 and 2,000%. Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Nebraska and Maine are
up 501 to 1,000%. Most other states are in the 101 to 500% increase range.

States that are buying the lowest amounts from Ammo.com are North and
South Dakota, and West Virginia, where sales have only increased by a
measly 100%. I guess they were ready in those states.

And after all is said and done, the Second Amendment does use the words
“necessary to the security of a free state!”

[MBZ] Support the Constitution and Bill of Rights

2020-03-21 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

From an email I received:

Among the many Covid-19 inspired cancellations recently has been the
National Rifle Association’s Annual Meeting in Nashville.  That event
usually generates a membership jump of several, if not tens of,
thousands (because entrance is free but for NRA members only, so the
cost of admission is to join).  Local gun shows, another good source of
new NRA Members, are also being curtailed.

So yes, I’m still hawking NRA Memberships as the best response in our
price range to people like [name removed for list nannies] who intend to
spend, spend, spend (and lie, lie, lie) until the Second Amendment and our
gun rights are but a faded memory.  My own very real coronavirus risk
factors are hampering my efforts as an NRA Recruiter; the discounts I
offer are difficult to accomplish except in person.  I do however have
an alternative that can work. Email me
 at
jmo...@hotmail.com .  I’ll respond with an
active web link
*//*and
instructions.  A person will use that particular link, purchase a
standard Annual Membership for $30, the lowest possible price anywhere
online, which includes a monthly magazine from four choices (/American
Rifleman/. /American/ /Hunter/, /America’s First Freedom/ or /Shooting
Illustrated/).  As soon as I’ve confirmed that you used my link (which
contains my NRA Recruiter ID number) I will initiate an application for
an Associate Membership for anyone you name at no additional cost to
you.  Associate Memberships normally cost $10 and are exactly the same
as full but with no monthly magazine.  So a person can join at the
lowest available rate and add a family member or friend for absolutely
nothing, doubling his or her effect on the membership total which is so
vital during an election year.  Email me or phone (228 324-0414) for
further details.

There really is no time to lose especially due to the lost ground from
the cancellations noted above.  Those membership numbers ideally should
spike before the nominating conventions and no later than late
September.  Encourage everyone you can to join.  This isn’t just about
guns.  The NRA’s charter promises guardianship and support of the entire
Constitution.  Once my quarantine is lifted and I can safely venture
forth, The Associate Memberships will be available for $6 – SIX DOLLARS!
– c’mon, man!

*Museum Update*

20 March 2020

IOWA Family:

As many of you know, multiple orders were issued in California
yesterday to keep the population "Safer at Home."  In both the County
and City of Los Angeles, these orders were issued to go until April
19th with a possibility of extending.  This order prevents us from
reopening until April 19th at the earliest.  You can view the
information surrounding this order at https://corona-virus.la/.

April 19th is always a difficult date for anyone involved with the
Battleship IOWA.  April 19th is the anniversary date of the Turret 2
explosion in 1989 when 47 sailors lost their lives.  Every year we
hold a service in memory of these sailors and to support those whose
lives and memories will forever be affected.  Depending on how the
COVID-19 situation evolves, we will adjust the memorial service to
ensure that this date is not forgotten.

We are in this crisis together!  Our local, state, and federal
governments are working on relief for each and every American to try
and reduce the hardship.  New information and programs are being
released daily.  I will try to include resources that I am aware of at
the bottom of my messages, as they may be helpful to you.

Thank you to all of those that have donated to date!  We are working
to keep the donor list updated in our e-blasts, but it may lag a few
days behind.  Please reach out to Joleen if you have any questions.

*OVERALL IMPACT TO IOWA*
The impact is tremendous as 69% of our revenue is generated from
ticket sales, event rentals, and overnight programs.  These cover the
essential costs to operate the ship including staffing, maintenance,
and programs. We continue to have numerous cancellations and
postponements of group tours, overnights, and event rentals.  We have
suspended all non-critical Accounts Payable until we reopen or receive
sufficient funding from the several funding sources we are working on.
Additionally, we have eliminated all non-essential power usage for six
days per week.  We have reduced hours and staffing to essential levels
and are looking at potential further reductions to critical levels in
the coming weeks if we are unable to raise sufficient funding to carry
us through for 8 to 10 weeks minimum.  I know the financial needs are
great in our communities, but if you are able, please consider helping
us weather this crisis by donating online or contact Joleen at
developm...@labattleship.com for assistance.  THANK YOU!

What our remaining staff is currently focused on:
•* Virtual Education Programs. * The Education Team is working on
virtual STEM-learning opportunities to keep our youth engaged.  Our
STEM Education programs are sponsored by Marathon Petroleum with
additional support from LAUSD Beyond the Bell, Norris Foundation, and
Crail-Johnson Foundation.  Our plan is to release these modules next
week through YouTube and our social media networks.  If you are
interested in hearing more, contact Ro Moser at rmo...@labattleship.com.
•* IOWA Virtual Tour by Guru.*  Download the FREE Battleship IOWA app
from your Apple or Android store and enjoy a virtual tour with videos,
360 virtual photos, and a variety of content.  The IOWA Virtual Tour
has content for all ages and we encourage you to enjoy it at home!
• *Compliance with “Safer at Home” Order. * We began implementing a
requirement for all non-essential crew to work from home beginning on
March 13th.  Essential crew aboard IOWA are there to ensure the safety
and security of the vessel.  There are inherent safety risks related
to a floating vessel that is soft moored at the country’s largest Port
complex.  We must ensure that the IOWA remains safely moored and not
in a hazardous condition to our community.  Therefore, the only crew
permitted at the ship are those in the Operations and Security
departments.  The crew that is aboard ship are required to maintain
social distancing, which is six feet from each other at all times.
•* USNS Mercy and Surface Navy. * It was announced in the media
yesterday that the Governor of California requested the US Navy to
deploy the USNS Mercy to the Port of Los Angeles.  Currently we are
not aware of any additional details of this possible deployment.  I
bring this up to highlight Humanitarian Assistance as a key pillar of
the Surface Navy. This is an opportunity to educate our public on the
important role of the Surface Navy, as well as the DSCA (Defense
Support of Civilian Authorities) planning program during LA Fleet
Week. For the past four years, Emergency Response personnel of all
levels of government have participated in a program during LA Fleet
Week to plan for a major disaster like the one presented to us today.

Thanks Craig,

For posterity, and for those who own OM603,2,1 engines, I added the MB
part number from your other email and the bolt torque.
If you own or anticipate owning an OM 603,2,1 copy the body below and
save it for future reference.

You can buy generic 6004 bearings for around $1.50 each.   FAG or SKF
are around $8 each currently.

The bearing is FAG 565592 (previous posting had the number wrong)

ID: 20mm
OD: 42MM
Width: 29/30

Mine measured 29.3mm

Meyle number: 014 098 0020

The problem is that none appear to be available, except a few in yurp
for something in the area of 50 euro or 50 Bp when I can buy the whole
assembly for $45 from FCP.

I took Jim's solution and ordered 2 6004-2RS FAG bearings for under $12
delivered.
6004s are 20x42x12 so you need a 4 to 6 mm wide spacer
between them.   I ground off a ring from the old bearing, then ground it
flat as I could, and assembled the spacer between the bearings in the arm.

Don't forget the spacer behind the arm!

Or the whole arm is MB# 601 200 17 73
