Re: [MBZ] Cheap rotors

2020-03-22 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Only thing you need to do is rough up the surface of rotors shipped in
cosmoline after removing the "grease". This prevents the spiral grooves from
turning or the coarse grind from wearing the pads funny initially. No prep
needed for the coated ones, just install and drive.

Light pedal if at all possible until the pads and rotor wear together to
prevent localized overheating, but that doesn't take long.

At least for the W115 and W123, Mercedes used to cast the rotors themselves.
Not sure if that's still the case, but there's most DEFINITELY a difference
between brands based on manufacturing methodology.

I have read something about bedding them in.  Supposed to make about 10
slow downs but not come to a complete stop so the pad does not sit on
there and imprint material on the rotor.  I have actually never followed
this procedure before.  I may have to replace these cheap rotors and
actually go thru the bed in procedure.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap rotors

2020-03-22 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
One thing that can cause pedal pulsation is a hard spot in the rotor. Usually
happens when you make a panic stop and then hold the pedal down, there is
enough carbon in the pads and the rotor is hot enough you add some carbon the
the spot under the pads, making it wear less that the rest of the surtace.

Can be cured by very light turning (couple thousandths removed only) and
prevented by allowing the car to roll a few feet after very hard stops.

MB rotors are sacrificial -- by the end of the second set of pads they are too
thin and need to be replaced. Reduces unsprung weight in the suspension and
reduces the cost of the rotors. They are cheap, replace when necessary.

I call BS on this as well. Along with the “you can’t turn Mercedes rotors”. As
long as the rotor hasn’t exceeded the minimum thickness, there’s no reason why
you can’t take metal off of it.

OE rotors have a little quarter moon sort of notch in them that is the
indicator of minimum thickness. You have to look close to see it, but it’s
there.

Re: [MBZ] Patina

2020-03-22 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Having owned all three of those, IMHO, you'd have a great car if you could
put the front suspension from the W115 under the W123, but it still would
not be as good as the W124 - from a driving/handling perspective.
From a maintenance perspective, the W123 beats them all.

I don’t know. All I do know is your not supposed to turn MB rotors for some
reason. I replaced the pads and rotors at the same time btw. I seem to recall a
long time ago hearing that you should not put brand new pads on brand new
rotors, but not sure what the reason would be if I did hear that somewhere.

It’s a Wisconsin staple. I get summer sausage sent to me bi-monthly in a care
package from my former town butcher. Yum.

[MBZ] Admin, announcing Okie Talk

2020-03-22 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
In the interest of keeping this list free of politics and other subjects
that might not be in line with our mission of discussion all things
Mercedes, I have created a separate list for these subjects. It is
strictly an off topic list with no MB content. This is no way means that
off topics posts are no longer allowed here.  Quite the contrary,
business will proceed as usual here. This new list is a place where we
can talk about politics, guns, viruses, etc.  The only rule for this new
list is no vulgarity, and respect your fellow list members.  So
basically, the same rules as here except politics are allowed.  If a
topic spirals out of control and you do not want to read it, scroll on.
Feel free to sign up at the link below and enjoy the new list.

Re: [MBZ] That nice 01 SL500 on CL

2020-03-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
One would certainly want to go over this car with the proverbial fine toothed
comb, but with what little information the seller has offered it appears to be
a pretty good deal. The interior looks clean, the exterior much the same.
Understand that there’s a good possibility the owner isn’t savvy enough or
capable of doing the top hydraulics - we’re not all accomplished DIYers. Even
if they went to an independent shop that used Top Hydraulics for their source
for cylinders and locks the final bill would easily be $2k-$3k, if not more.
That’s enough to spook anyone for a car of this vintage and value.

The M113 is a pretty robust engine and easy to maintain. Unlikely there’s
anything going on with it.

If it were close to me I would definitely check it out. If all was well except
for hydraulics I would pay $4500-$5k for the car. It’s probably an $8k-$10k car
on the market with everything sorted.

If nothing else you have the basis for a heartwarming screen play (rom com)
about a Norman Rockwell-esque family (including a BAD dog), and their
hilarious misadventures driving an unpredictable vintage Mercedes station
wagon.

OTOH, my 300TD is well maintained and solid as a rock. If you want to
replace your aging steed with a reliable mirror image let me know.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Ceiling Fan/Electrical Quandary

2020-03-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I didn’t elaborate on the ceiling fan, but it’s a Hunter that runs off a remote
for everything - light and fan, dimmer and speeds. So I just need power to it
all the time and nothing else. That’s why I was saying it could easily be on
the light circuit as any time the lights are off the fan wouldn’t be in use
anyway.

At this point it’s more of a matter to see if I can get to the junction boxes
on either the ventilation fan or can lights. If I can get that resolved I can
do the remote thing to control the ventilation fan. It’s only a foot or two
away in the ceiling so there’s even the chance I could cut the hole for the fan
support and get a hand up there to access the junction box. I can do the remote
thingy from inside the fan enclosure.

Hmm.

 So here’s the deal:

I want to install a ceiling fan on the ceiling of our master bathroom. The

sink/counter areas with can lights in the ceiling. There is also a
ventilation fan in the ceiling as well.

My initial thought was to connect up to one of the can lights (they are
controlled together by the same switch) and just run the ceiling fan off
of their circuit. It’s highly unlikely that the ceiling fan would be
needed if the lights are off. But - since these are can lights the
junction boxes are on the outsides of the fixtures, meaning I can’t get to
the junction boxes from below because the fixtures were installed from the
attic space. At least I believe that to be the case, that I couldn’t
dismantle the fixtures from below and drop them out the opening. I can
probably snake a wire across the ceiling from one of the can lights to the
location where the fan would be installed.

The alternative is to utilize the same feed to the ventilation fan, but
that means it would have to be on if the ceiling fan was to operate unless
I rigged some means of turning off the ventilation fan locally, like with
a chain/pull switch or something like that. The proximity to the ceiling
fan would probably make this impossible. Not an ideal situation.

Worst case scenario would be to run a feeder through the attic space (I
could possibly get a wire from parts of the attic I can access to the
ceiling of the bathroom) all the way back to the distribution panel, but
that’s all the way on the opposite side of the house.

I’m looking for ideas here. This is a pretty creative bunch, help me
identify a solution I have’t yet thought of.

2020-03-22 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Yeah that’s probably more what it is. I have these fans that I put in, they’re
switched but a little RF remote works the light and fan operation. I know there
are similar things for lights. So you could leave the power on at the wall
switch then turn the fan or light on with their respective remotes.

There are those Alexa and google lights too but they need WiFi to make the
lights work.

I had that happen on a Toyota years ago. I had just installed a new
master cylinder. The rod in brake pedal mechanism that depressed the
master cylinder piston was adjustable, but at the time I had no
idea. Brake shop fixed it after I gave up.

See, this is what I was talking about! I hadn’t even considered this approach.

However, it did occur to me that the junction box for the fan will be on the

[MBZ] OT - Ceiling Fan/Electrical Quandary

2020-03-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
So here’s the deal:

I want to install a ceiling fan on the ceiling of our master bathroom. The roof
pitch over this part of the house makes it nearly impossible for me to access
the area from above. On opposite sides of the bathroom are sink/counter areas
with can lights in the ceiling. There is also a ventilation fan in the ceiling
as well.

My initial thought was to connect up to one of the can lights (they are
controlled together by the same switch) and just run the ceiling fan off of
their circuit. It’s highly unlikely that the ceiling fan would be needed if the
lights are off. But - since these are can lights the junction boxes are on the
outsides of the fixtures, meaning I can’t get to the junction boxes from below
because the fixtures were installed from the attic space. At least I believe
that to be the case, that I couldn’t dismantle the fixtures from below and drop
them out the opening. I can probably snake a wire across the ceiling from one
of the can lights to the location where the fan would be installed.

The alternative is to utilize the same feed to the ventilation fan, but that
means it would have to be on if the ceiling fan was to operate unless I rigged
some means of turning off the ventilation fan locally, like with a chain/pull
switch or something like that. The proximity to the ceiling fan would probably
make this impossible. Not an ideal situation.

Worst case scenario would be to run a feeder through the attic space (I could
possibly get a wire from parts of the attic I can access to the ceiling of the
bathroom) all the way back to the distribution panel, but that’s all the way on
the opposite side of the house.

I’m looking for ideas here. This is a pretty creative bunch, help me identify a
solution I have’t yet thought of.

Thanks!

[MBZ] OT: Sausage party

2020-03-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Yesterday was the annual sausage party for the guys I was deer hunting with
last fall.
We processed all the deer last fall, they keep the backstrap and tenderloin and
cut a bunch of the rear quarters for "stew meat" which is the best dammed stew
meat you've ever seen. The rest goes into bags for grind. The little doe I shot
at the end of the season buddy Ben and I did ourselves, we took some steaks out
of the rear quarters but still had 18# of grind.
So yesterday the grinder got set up and 150# of grind plus about 40# of pork
fat and a couple boston butts went through. All of it got mixed together into
sausage.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49687115147_59c7a3ab53_b.jpgThis is the
second grind, 16# of ground venison plus 4# of pork, with spices etc. IIRC this
was garlic sausage, but we also did hot, italian and breakfast. The breakfast
is 15/5, we figured breakfast sausage ought to be a little extra greasy.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49686814646_7de40ba66b_b.jpgThis is the
final production run. They're stacked left to right by type so each guy got
pile of each type. I took an extra hot sausage and ended up with 27# of sausage
in the freezer.
Last night Angie made pasta with italian sausage rolled into balls. I was wiped
out from working all day but she said it was really good.
I'll probably bring some to ChowdaQ, lets see if thats a big draw... ;)

I would never have an Apple watch, but I can sort of see the value for some of
the uncommon capabilities it has, like the fall alert for an older person and
the health monitoring features. Otherwise it’s a lot of repetitive stuff my
phone can do, I think.

I like my iPhone’s capability to keep track of my walking. Nice to be able to
look and see how far I’ve walked on a given day.

Tracy wrist indicator."

There are so many time pieces around I hardly need a watch. My Marine Star is
the only piece of jewelry I own other than my wedding ring...

My first cell phone was a bag phone.  Not much of a replacement
for a watch!  But I gave up watches when I started getting Carpal
Tunnel Syndrome.  Haven't worn one since.

It's ironic that with the advent of Fitbits and Apple watches, they're
coming back.  I might end up with one again after all, we'll see.

I am considering this exact problem.  If the wife's not willing to give it a go,
I've got a Flow-bee around here somewhere that had originally been bought
somewhat as a joke.

In the lantern collecting world the standard offer for anything is $8. This
comes from the old days when lanterns were plentiful in yard sales and you
could sometimes get something super rare for cheap.
With that in mind, I'll live you $8 each for your watches ;)

I've got a Bulova Marine Star that Angie gave me a few years ago. My favorite
watch ever. Sadly at the moment the battery is dead. I should maybe investigate
how to get the back off without scratching it...

Re: [MBZ] 124 brakes

2020-03-22 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Stuck brakes? Could be one of three things, and I've experienced all
of them on MB:

1) Stuck caliper
2) Failing hose
3) Failing master cylinder

The latter was particularly 'amusing'. Even with the pedal all the way up,
the _rear_ brake section wouldn't quite release enough to expose the drain
port on the cylinder, resulting in held pressure on the rear brakes and a
near-fire amount of heat. That one I cured with a file, IIRC, though a new
MC would have done the job. (This was on the W201 190D.) My record
of that experience begins:

The PO's dog is what made the Chicken Wagon, which had been in pristine
condition when he'd bought it, the Chicken Wagon. Steering wheel, door
panels...

No dogs in my cars! Not without a crate.

MAPP is a little hotter than propane, yes, but doesn't hold a candle to
acetylene.
Maybe look into getting one of those? 1,001 uses, etc.

I'd replace the hoses too, unless done in the last 5 years or 50,000 miles.
Sounds very much like a failed hose lining acting as a one-way valve.

Nothing like fun!

Sounds like a classic case of a swollen brake line? Otherwise a stuck
piston/caliper?

Beat the dog, not the wife.
