I remembered this advice when I took one of the switches for our '93

I would have lost something.

Re: [MBZ] Are Hurricanes fun?

2020-07-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The ones I’ve been in are fairly dull. Irma was probably the worst, maybe 75
mph winds. I’ve probably been in at least five if not more, in the early oughts
(2003? 2005?) we had three of them pass us in short order, like within a few
weeks. I live in a newer area with well constructed homes and underground
utilities, so even in storms like Irma we never lost power (or cable.)

The worst thing about living in Florida is not the hurricanes. It’s the week or
so before the hurricanes.

For those of you living in more temperate areas, think about it this way:

When inclement weather is coming, say, a snowstorm or blizzard, you’ll know it
a couple days in advance. Two days out and you’re cleaning out the shelves at
the local Stop ’n Shop for toilet paper, bread and milk. You have a day or two
in order to prepare, the storm comes, you hunker down, it’s gone, all done. Go
shovel the front walk and driveway and you’re done.

In Florida and elsewhere, as soon as a “tropical wave” is identified in the
Atlantic, the fun begins. If you’re lucky, it’s clear from the get-go there’s
no threat and you go about your business. If you look at the latest one, you’ll
see that we knew something was brewing last week. Where was it going? Who
knows? Now that it’s a couple days out it’s *pretty* clear we won’t be
disturbed by it at all. However, we’ve been on pins and needles for the last
week wondering if it’s going to hit us. We’re still not out of danger, as
things can change and change quickly, so there’s a lot of glancing over your
shoulder, so to speak. For instance, Irma was bearing down directly on us and
in less than four hours before it arrived it moved a couple of degrees and
ended up missing us by about 50 miles.

In other words, we get a good week of stress before things really ramp up, and
when they do it’s all hands on deck and man the battle stations. Storm prep
takes a good day to complete, and if you need food or materials you’ll be
fighting a good part of the population for it.

The stress leading up to the (potential) storm sucks. The storms themselves
aren’t that bad. Just a lot of wind and rain. If your home is modern and you’re
prepared it’s not that big of a deal.

And lucky me - my 24kW Kohler standby set is being commissioned on Saturday
morning. I’m sure that’s what caused the current storm to move away from us.

It does, and they are, but due to bad planning the bed was still full of kayaks.
They were sort of 'behind' those too. There was no jerking, so the amount
of potential energy stored within a potentially breaking strap was limited to
only whatever the truck could develop via traction with the oily road. I felt
it was safe-ish, but certainly could have been wrong.

[MBZ] 107's are cool

2020-07-30 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Disaster! They oiled the gravel road again today, and my wife was
attempting to drive on the side in the un-oiled swath. She missed.
She called me and I dashed down with the (V10) truck and a tow strap.
I arrived to find the car nearly completely off the road, and at a
very precarious angle in the "almost tumble sideways down the hill"
attitude. Very scary. She was frozen. I added my weight to the
uphill side and had her stop the engine and put it in Park, then
gently let loose the brake. It lurched a bit and then stopped. I
opened the door and held it open so she could climb out of the car.
Once she was out we could both breathe easier. We called down the
neighbor so that we had a second set of eyes available, to help guard
against mistakes. Jill was pretty rattled.

I had a look underneath at the front, and I couldn't find the tow
hook. It looks like it had been broken off, and long enough ago that
there was nothing there but rust. Huh. On to Plan B. I wrapped the
strap around the lower control arm on the uphill side, the steering
was already cranked over to 'drive' back onto the road. We tied off
to the truck and I had Jill and the neighbor climb into the bed for
additional traction, and forward enough to stay away from the strap if
it should snap. I then put it in first and 4wd and eased out the
slack, then slowly pushed on the throttle until it was floored. It
didn't move, but I don't think we could build RPM enough to get
maximal torque. I then backed off and put it into low range and tried
again. This time it walked forward without any fuss, dragging the car
completely back onto the road; there was no slipping, even on the oily
gravel surface. After that we just unhooked and everybody drove home.

Jill then washed the car, and I washed out the truck, whose carpets
had gotten filthy with road oil. (Not petroleum, I believe. Sticky,
black-ish, and smelly.) I used orange Goop and a scrub brush, and a
hose. The Shop-vac did much of the drying, the sun is finishing the
job.

I believe that a taller vehicle, like the ubiquitous SUV, would have
probably rolled under these circumstances. This is the second time
that I believe this car's low center of gravity has prevented a worse
accident. (Though to be fair, if the convertible _did_ roll that
would be Very Bad.)

As someone else pointed out, he does not mention replacing the hoses.
Having gone to all that trouble and expense to get the system working
properly, if he didn't replace the hoses as well, he will have leaks,
particularly with the original hoses which were non-barrier hoses.

Chinese company Beijing Auto has released another generation of BJ
80, the appearance of which is firmly associated with Mercedes-Benz
G-Class. The main change is a new engine 30 hp power than the
previous and 8-range ′′ automatic ". The main technical innovation
was the appearance of a three-liter trekhlitrovogo gasoline` engine
with a superstition, which became an alternative to the 2,3-liter ′′
Quartet ′′ Saab capacity 250 horsepower. The six-cylinder unit
develops 280 hp and 420 Nm of torque. The new engine runs with
eight-stage automatic transmission (with the previous engine combines
a 6-range ACP) and a full drive system with a lower range, as well as
blocks of border and rear differential. Electronic transmission
management provides for four driving modes: economy, comfort, sports
and snow. Engineers optimized the SUV suspension and reduced the body
height by 20 mm, which according to the manufacturer, made the
machine more stable in motion. The full drive system has e-control to
 ensure smooth switching of 2 H, 4 H and 4 L modes. When choosing 4 L,
the transmission torque may be increased by 2,72 times. The angle of
the entrance is 39°, and the corner of the congress is 33°. Steering
was also subject to modernization. A configured digital dashboard
appeared in the salon. In addition to basic information, you can
display navigator tips, tire pressure data and other necessary
 information on the screen.
