That's awful. Good lesson to never reuse food or beverage containers for
toxic stuff.

The opposite rule is in laboratories, never use lab glassware as drink
cups or for cooking food. Though in the chemistry dept here where my
parents worked, they used to make coffee in a big pyrex flask. Certainly
not permitted today.

I don't know about long radius searches, but the ones I do on my local
CL add nearby results until I get 100 hits.
So I suspect once you hit 100 ads, increasing your radius won't add
more.

Does she drive enough to make a diesel worth it? If she makes mostly short
trips around town the extra expense of a diesel makes no sense. I prefer a
diesel but I kind of feel bad for my TDI right now, it makes mostly short trips.

Its 14 years old, I don't consider 188,000 to be high miles. Thats 13,428 per
year. Maybe on the high side of normal. Aren't leases usually based on 10,000 a
year?
You've got to ask yourself if the car is worth the selling price plus the work
that needs to be done. I don't see anything there I couldn't do myself at
considerably discounted cost although I'd want to check on the price of the
control arm.

I wish automakers would just use glass for the headlights. The few

[MBZ] Foggy Headlights

2020-11-05 Thread ned kleinhenz via Mercedes
I remember a recent thread about correcting foggy headlight lenses. I have
some recent experience to share. Last spring I had two 2006 model year
cars with headlights that had yellowing, becoming brown lenses. One car is
a Sienna minivan and the other is an E320 CDI.

About 7 months ago I restored the Sienna lenses using a Sylvania Headlight
Restoration Kit. This kit uses three successive wet sand paper steps
followed by hand polishing. The polished lens is finally sealed with a UV
block clear coat. The procedure was fairly quick and easy and the results
looked very good. But after about 6 months the lenses started fogging and
they are now decaying quickly.

About 5 months ago I restored the Mercedes lenses using an approach
recommended by my brother who used it on his older Lexus about six years
ago. My brother reports that his Lexus lenses have remained clear since
using this procedure. The procedure involves wet sanding by hand using
grits starting at 400 or 800 and then 1000 or 1500 and finally 2000 or
3000. Then, using a small electric drill polishing pad, polish the lenses
using rubbing compound. Then using the same drill and pad polish each lens
again using “mirror finishing polish” compound. Finally, protect the
lenses by covering them with XPEL Protective Film.

XPEL makes films already cut to exact size for some headlights like my
Mercedes. Otherwise, XPEL can be bought in sheets at various sizes and
thicknesses that can be applied and then trimmed with a razor to the exact
size of the lens. I was bothered that XPEL does not identify any UV
resistance characteristic in their product descriptions. But the product
must be UV resistant because my Mercedes headlights have not decayed in 5
months. And my brother has not replaced the film on his headlights in 6
years and his lenses remain clear.

[MBZ] 2006 E320 CDI

2020-11-05 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I test drove this car today as a potential replacement for SWMBO's Frod.
Very clean and handled just fine, with plenty of pep. the 5 speed AT
shifted smoothly. Here are the potential issues:

1. Unresolved CEL that selling dealer says they will take care of
2. Needs: rear shocks, rear control arm and LF ball point in order to pass
inspection (approx. $1650 cost).
3. High mileage (188K) but the interior doesn't show much wear. Clean
carfax report.
4. Rear cup holder (middle of rear bench) won't retract and stay closed.

Any caveats?

[MBZ] IN 02 ML320 for sale $1800

2020-11-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Reasonable price it seems though I would look carefully at the
rust. Could be a good winter beater though

Thinking about putting my 02 ML320 up for sale just to thin the herd a
bit. Haven’t really thought about a price but $1800 seems to be a good
starting point. Just seeing what people think and seeing if I’m in the
right ballpark or not. Located in South Bend IN, USA

2002 ML320
212k miles
VIN- 4JGAB54E12A326836
Sport package
Memory package
Factory Bi-Xenon’s
2 keys- 1 functioning remote and 1 Mickey Mouse key
New Verdestein tires with less than 1000 miles on them
New plugs, couple of coil packs replaced
Aftermarket radio with Bluetooth has been wired in and all speakers
replaced, along with wiring for a amp/subwoofer if need be.

Newer xenon ballasts and bulbs
AC works, Heated seats work, windows work.
The car is far from perfect. It has little places of rust starting,
probably needs breathers resealed, couple of the small trim pieces for
the front bumper need to be sourced (headlamp washer cover, and fog
light trim ring), small crack in front bumper. Recently got louder,
sounds like a catalytic converter split, no CEL though yet.
Runs and drives great, just have way too many cars and thought about
keeping this through the winter but probably should just pick up snow
tires for another car.
Let me know thoughts and if anyone has any interest. Would rather it go
to someone who knows about the W163.

There was some discussion about the engine in the previous vid,
apparently the 55s are installed canted at an angle for clearances on
steering shaft or something, seems to be that way in various vehicles.

All that happened before the EPA, so it wasn't deadly then. No government
specialist came to tell you that you were going to die from it, so you
didn't.
After all, you drove to work in the body shop to spread lead all day in a
car without seat belts, right?

Safe, because you survived WW2 and came back to go to work, raise a family,
and die of old age at 65, In your bedroom painted with lead paint.
