With the "surge" Maine is getting more strict. With only 67,000 people in the
county the local snowmobilers don't really support the program all that much.

It's like anything in life. You look at the relative risks and make a
decision. Do you want to take a vaccine that was rushed through
development and testing in 10 months, a vaccine for which the
manufacturers have been granted exemption from liability? Maybe if
you're in a high risk category due to age or other health issues, you
feel that it is the lower risk option. If you're younger and healthy,
maybe you take a wait and see position.

Yeah on a second look the body, glass, and paint look good and trim
looks complete except for the hood star. Though no clear views of the
underside, jack points, etc. could all be rotted.

Oil pressure looks borderline low. Might just need a heavier oil.

If you're younger and healthy,
maybe you take a wait and see position.

not open borders until next year. Either way, the provincial borders are shut

None of the big pharma are able to produce in quantities required to have
statistically significant impact. UK was all excited about maybe using their 5
million doses, which could show up late spring 2021, to infect a couple million
frail folks (two dose).

Maybe when there are half a dozen billion doses available, we will know if the
cures are worse than the plague. That should be long after the WRD has swept
through the population and herd immunity is common.

[MBZ] Random COVID question

2020-11-22 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
How come, as we approach a year of this pandemic, the paper companies
still cannot keep retailers stocked with toilet paper and paper towels?

I was at Target yesterday, and they had nothing. Zippo. Not even a roll
of the most generic off-brand anything.

Is it simply lack of truck and storage and shelf space? The retailers
are buying as much as they can fit through their pipeline and it's still
not enough?

Why are they not raising prices to meet demand? Surely it's better to
have to pay more for something if you really need it, than to be unable
to buy it at all? A higher price will also discourgage hoarding.

We just keep our usual hurricane supply levels maintained, no shortages here. I
will say that I did go down the paper goods aisle this morning when I was doing

AK has to barge all its goods from outside. Article in this week’s daily rag
reports that shipping costs are going up due to constrictions related to
meeting mandates, wear and tear on employees, and PITA of access to docks. Lot
of boats are moored at ports with no place to be.

Added to the reduced hours manufacturers of goods are actually producing, paper
plants dropped shifts, much as others have reduced employment. Less goods to
ship, less stuff on shelves. Now it is weather that slows or impedes goods
arriving, so it stacks up at originating ports not getting loaded, as well as
not being off loaded, as there is reduced rail and road transport.

A recent example of how SARS-CoV is tossing a wrench. #1 boy is essential. He
was in a location all day with somebody who came in contact with another person
who came in contact with other person who tested for the plague. Being a
conscientious person, he tells the supervisor. That gets him sent home until
he has percolated long enough for plague to erupt, at which point he has to get
a test for Schroedinger virus.

One week out of work.

Tested and has to wait, since employer demands most reliable testing.

Other week unemployed.

Had he been truly infected, then funding would have kicked in for lost wages.
Since he did not become plague zombie, no dinero, work was down essential
employees at essential job sites for half the month, chain reaction of contact
trace put even more people imprisoned to 14 days, slowing more essential
business.

One positive. It was hunting season, so the plague in waiting group was able
to bag their limits.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Tesla Crash Rains Flaming Batteries into Nearby Homes

2020-11-22 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Someone else's bed, but I think everyone forgets that regular cars burn up
pretty frequently. It happened to my sister's Pontiac t6000 in college; she
had enough time to pull over, open the hood and then grab her wallet off
the dash board before it was too hot to get near ther car. The melted front
bumper puddle is still a piece of wall art on her house.

I never thought of the battery pack as an energy-absorbing component of the
chassis, but mass is generally your friend and the safety benefit of this
low slung 1200 lb object needs to be factored in.

Re: [MBZ] Random COVID question

2020-11-22 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Lack of toilet paper is a supply chain issue.
To manufacture toilet paper, you need pulpwood.
To get pulpwood you need forest workers to cut trees, shippers with trucks
to ship pulpwood logs, factories with a present labor force to run the
factories to make paper products.

Tree cutters are not working because of covid 19.
Truck drivers are not working because of covid 19.
Factory workers are not working because of covid 19.
Etc.

Thus, because since the 1980's "Just in Time Production Edict"
everyone's product... is only made to be shipped the same day... Which
means, all the others in the supply chain to produce any product today have
keyed their workforce and supply chain to meet that paradigm.

So... soon... wipe with your left hand,,, eat with your right hand, and
don't scratch your nose.

[MBZ] Alternate Uses for P/S Fluid?

2020-11-22 Thread Jerry Herrman via Mercedes
I am in the process of straightening up my garage to clear out some of the
clutter. I'm finding lots of items that I haven't needed for several years.
I have the tendency to keep these things "just in case". Among those items
are about five containers (some open, some sealed) of power steering fluid.
Are there any alternate uses for power steering fluid?

ATF fluid and Power Steering fluid should be pretty much the same. Both are
made to run hydraulic "things"...

My new Ford truck specs for the use of ATF oil for power steering. That is
satisfying, since that's what I've been using for the last 30 years. ;))

I don't know what kind of cooking smoke PS oil might give your BBQ. But,
I'm willing to bet it would leave a "layer of flavor" you would not soon
forget.

PS fluid and ATF are not interchangeable for any Benz after the W123. ATF will
eat the seals in the newer PS pumps. I know, it happened to mine.

I don't know of any real other use for PS fluid, it's a light hydraulic oil
with anti-wear characteristics for vane type pumps.

That's what the heat gun is for.
2-3 minutes of hot air blast and the charcoal is going just fine, with
no petro aftertaste.
Wait 5 minutes, throw on some apple, maple or hickory sticks, and you're
ready to cook.
