Ethernet ports are easily zapped so that they no longer work.
Some are more robust than others.  But make sure you have
a known good cable first, and that there is no mechanical
damage to the Ethernet connector on the computer.

To be fair, that was due to a legal dispute with his ex- recording label.  They 
denied
him the use of his own name after he left them.  Not sure how the symbol was any

The Ford V10 has less displacement, and thus less torque than the Dodge.  It 
also has
a balance shaft, which is a detriment to long-term reliability.  The Dodge V10 
was expressly
designed to have the same torque spec as the Cummins diesel, for those who 
wanted to
tow but could not stand owning a diesel.  450 lb-ft.  So far as I know, the 
ONLY significant
knock against that V10 is its fuel economy.  For an auxiliary utility vehicle, 
that's insignificant.

I only knew one guy who owned a V-10.
IIRC, it was shortly after they were introduced.
Unfortunately, it was a brand new Class C.

Hey, this thing burns oil like crazy. Fix it.

First we have to find out if it's really using oil.
We'll make sure it's full, and put tamperproof seals on the dipstick and 
drain plug.
Bring it back in 3000 miles and we'll see if consumption is above 
limits.


It's a motorhome, and I just finished my vacation!
Do you expect me to just drive it until it seizes, and get stranded 
somewhere?

And did I mention I'm done driving it for the year anyway?

Only if you want it fixed under warranty. Easier for me if you just 
refuse to comply and lose your warranty.


IIRC, they just loaded it up and took it to the Grand Canyon expecting 
to blow it up along the way (they did, and got stranded where they 
didn't want to be until a new engine was installed).

It's a stripped basic Japanese truck in 1994 4cyl, stick shift, short 
cab, bought by a guy in his 60s according to the story.
I don't see anything optional in that interior, and I doubt AC was 
standard.

 Swap the whole cable, always start with the cable.
A week or so ago I was trying to update the Fujinet device for my Atari, the 
software demands Catalina Mac OS so I made a Ubuntu live disk but couldn't get 
the software to recognize the device. Finally pulled out a Windows machine and 
it also wouldn't recognize the device. Tried a different USB cable and it 
worked right away. Apparently they make microUSB cables that are for charging 
only. That cable went right in the trash...

I worked with a guy who had an older Chevy 2wd that he used to tow
his boat.  Worked fine, but was puny on hills, and got terrible gas mileage.
Very unsatisfying to drive due to the power deficit.  His truck was old enough
(70's? 80's?) that its desirability was going up.

Recently having gone through the V10 exercise I told him to buy a snowbird
V10 (2wd, auto), one of which was for sale for $2500 IIRC, and sell his truck.
Pocket the cash difference, and be careful not to rip the tongue off of his boat
trailer when using the loud pedal.  Mileage would have been about the same.
Dodge's V10 is a low-tech engine with a very good reliability record.  
Everything
about it is great except the fuel economy.  At least it uses regular gas!

Synchros might have seen better days, and they put in a cheap used box 
when they had to take it out anyway to do the clutch?


Those things like to be "overfilled" for best life anyway, they work 
better (but probably use more fuel) with 1/2" more oil than GM 
recommends. Mine has 228k on it, all original except the clutch, but 
driven by people who know how to drive, and driven in rural/interstate 
conditions.


Oh, there's a 'clutch delay valve', which delays engagement AND 
DISENGAGEMENT of the clutch when you work the pedal fast. As a result, 
if you try to speed shift, the clutch is still engaged when you're 
trying to jam it in gear. Great feature in an emergency, which is where 
I found out about mine 2 years after I bought it. Some kid trying to 
drive it sporty can probably wear out the synchros pretty quick.

that's what I was thinking too, might as well open up the tranny and 
change filter and fluid, drop the valve body and conductor plate and 
check everything out.  It looks like the 722.9 has an internal 
electrical connector, not external like the 722.6.


Changing fluid in the 722.9 involves pumping fluid up through the drain 
hole, some sort of tube that sits in there to get the correct amount of 
fluid in the pan, there is no provision for pouring it in from the top.  
Very strange design.  WTF were they thinking?  I haven't looked into it 
enough to learn about cooling lines and flushing those.


The guy is going to pick me up tomorrow and take me back to his place so 
I can drive the car home, will see what is going on with it when I get 
it back to the vast estate.

temperature dependent failure in the TCM?

Showing messages for air suspension and brakes, I’ll have to see what that’s 
about. Suspension pumps up but was clunking. Brakes work ok too I think, might 
be SBC. He did tell me he had replaced a coupla the air struts but thought 
another one was bad. I guess so.

In Florida it has to go to a state inspection station for a complete 
inspection, which takes about 2-4 hours, after which (assuming it passes) they 
brand the car with a special VIN sticker on the "A" pillar post.

I bought salvage, which the insurance companies can legally sell only to 
dealers with a dismantler license, by having a dismantler buy it for me.


Then I had to pay a specially trained cop $100 (state says no more than 
$100, which in practice means no less than $100) to inspect it, which 
meant verifying the engine and transmission serial numbers, checking my 
receipts for the donor car VIN for the door, and making sure 
lights/wipers worked. Aside from checking the exterior lamps and wipers, 
it was all about certifying that there weren't any stolen parts on it.


As far as roadworthy, he didn't even know if it would start. He pay have 
cared if the brake pedal went to the floor during the light check.

salvage from the insurance company and getting a rebuilt title when

It says I’m getting a check mailed on the 6th, have not seen it yet. Last one 
was direct deposit. Not sure why the difference. Might be because the previous 
year I got a small refund and this last time for 2019 I had to pay, so no bank 
account on that return.

I went back and looked at my files, and I was not 100% correct:

Tarek’s W140 had a “rebuilt” title from NC, which Florida would recognize as a 
“regular” car. As far as Florida is concerned, if the state designated the car 
as rebuilt it’s roadworthy and no different than any other car on the road.

My “rebuilt” title on the SL500 is due to the PO buying the car as salvage from 
the insurance company and getting a rebuilt title when the car was made

Probably when they get an investment bank to underwrite the offering and
start the process of listing it on a public exchange.

This sounds like they are seeking angel/VC money, where the onus is
entirely on the investors to do their due diligence. And I'm not in that
world at all, but car parts doesn't strike me as something attractive to
a VC investor. Where is the opportunity for growth in old Mercedes
parts? It's a niche market by definition.

That’s what will happen to the 1999 E320 4Matic at some point.

Whether or not it’s viable to buy here and move the cars north is questionable, 
as the costs involved to transport them, whether doing it yourself or some 
other way, would negate a lot of any potential profit I would think. CarMax 
wouldn’t do anything this old, but I”m sure they do it with later model cars as 
well as cars like convertibles.

When I used to go to the Mannheim auctions you would see truckloads of 
convertibles shipped to Florida from their PA location in the wintertime. No 
market for them up north in the winter, so move them to FL where there’s a 
year-round market.

My dad's first new pickup (and the family truck when I turned 16) was a 
1973 F100, 360 2bbl, C6 3sp slushbox. Not much power when you floored it 
and let it run, but pretty grunty down low. IIRC, just gently driving 
around, 55mph speed limits, I got 12mpg in it. Doing farm stuff, 10mpg 
and lower. It would be worth a LOT more than the $600 he sold it for if 
he'd kept it in the garage for the last 40 years instead of selling it, 
but it wouldn't be a truck by modern standards, it would be a toy. He 
replaced it with a used 1976 GMC 2500, 350 4bbl, because some of the 
stuff we did, we really needed 3/4 ton chassis and suspension.

I worked with a guy who had an older Chevy 2wd that he used to tow
his boat.  Worked fine, but was puny on hills, and got terrible gas mileage.
Very unsatisfying to drive due to the power deficit.  His truck was old enough
(70's? 80's?) that its desirability was going up.

Recently having gone through the V10 exercise I told him to buy a snowbird
V10 (2wd, auto), one of which was for sale for $2500 IIRC, and sell his truck.
Pocket the cash difference, and be careful not to rip the tongue off of his boat
trailer when using the loud pedal.  Mileage would have been about the same.
Dodge's V10 is a low-tech engine with a very good reliability record.  
Everything
about it is great except the fuel economy.  At least it uses regular gas!

The tranny was in limp-home mode.  Of course it had other little issues too.
I wasn't looking for a daily driver, so my criteria were modestly met.  Turns
out that particular example was not difficult nor expensive to resurrect.
Sufficiently, anyway.  I just drove it yesterday.  Brought home a load of
free firewood in the bed.  Heavy.  Truck never noticed the load.  It really is
the next best thing to my diesel, except quieter and much thirstier.  And,
roughly 1/10 the price.

The point is that if EVERYBODY wants X, if you want X too you will have
to pay for it.  The trick to saving money is to find something suitable that
nobody wants, and buy that.  Ford has made a LOT of F150 trucks, so
the chances of finding a good used truck deal in that marque are maximized.
Toyota has made relatively few Tacomas, of course it'll be hard to find a
really good deal.
