Re: [MBZ] Sharpening drill bits

2021-01-16 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
None of these tools tested gave any mention to the most important item in
getting drills sharp.
That is, always dress the grinding wheel so that it is clean and flat,
also, grinding wheels come with many grit selections. Many who try to
sharpen drill bits give no thought to what grit they are using, or what
type of wheel composition they have.

To put a fine cutting edge on the drill you are sharpening, once the
profile is correct at the cutting anvil, the bit should be final finished
at the cutting planes with a fine grit stone in the grinder.at

Last tip. Watch the video again and specifically observe the cutting chips
each drill is making. Notice the drill that cut the fastest produced very
uniform chips... If you sharpen a bit, and it does not give you chips that
look like that bit produced.
Resharpen it, and reshape the cut planes. Look at a sharp bit that cuts
well... remember what those cutting anvils looked like... Make yours look
just like it. You will be glad you did because it will work.

Thanks for the response on the Harbor Freight drill bits. Kinda what I

Given that, my next question is about drill bit sharpeners. I have tried a

much time to sharpen them and the results were not satisfactory. I'm pretty
sure some of that was due to the user's (me) lack of skill. Sharpening by

2021-01-16 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Drill Dr. works well. It's not possible to sharpen drills without a proper jig
of some sort in sizes less than 1/2" even with years of practice.

Rule in the shop was that nothing under 1/4" got sharpened, and usually nothing
under 1/2". Spent more sharpening them than they cost, small drills are cheap
, bought them by the 100.

Small drills are very hard to get properly sharp, any off-set on the center
will cause them to wander badly and usually break in hand drill use. Way too
cheap to mess about with if you are trying to make money with them.

Don't know about those but would be interested to hear your experience.

I have found that some HF stuff is complete junk, but other stuff is
quite a good value.

I've been very satisfied with their "Pittsburgh" brand sockets,
wrenches, and screwdrivers.

Simple:

For a Mercedes part, Google “mercedes” and the part number, no spaces.

Google “bosch” and “1427133094” and you’ll get hits on the Bosch part.

YES they are - my first MB, a 1970 220D was from MN (my Grandfather bought
it new) - I sold it for parts when it started binding the doors when jacked
up on one side. When you drove through puddles of water, it would splash
onto the windshield through the holes in the front fenders.
