As far as I can figure, the UFO has 3 interdependent functions.
The boost signal from the manifold goes to the ALDA.
At the ALDA the boost signal is teed off to power the UFO.
The two other functions are, via another vacuum whatsit (Black), it
modulates the EGR.
Lastly, the vacuum supply is varied and sent to the control at the back of
the I/P and then down to the trans shift modulator.

YMMV

Re: [MBZ] Maybe I should stick it to FedEx

2021-06-11 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I ordered a few items from amazon yesterday, and they promised next day
delivery. To my surprise, the order was in my mailbox at 11am this morning
- delivered by the USPS! About the earliest they come by our house is 11 -
usually more like 3-4pm.
How did Amazon get USPS to deliver that fast???

Closer to the original thread topic, lasat year I had an order of airplane
parts go missing due to UPS. They reported it as delivered, though it was
nowhere to be found. I filed a claim, had several back and forth emails
with them. It was about $400 worth. UPS said they'd work with the shipper.
I needed the parts so called the shipper, who said "Oh, so sorry, we'll get
another order out today". They did, and it arrived three days later. Almost
two months after the first order was reported as delivered, it arrived. The
box had obviously been sitting outside in the rain for the duration. I have
no idea where/how they found it.

Actually I checked again and Tirerack has that same tire in the 155

2021-06-11 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
It has 165R15 tires now. No "ratio" number as in modern tire sizes. They
are quite old so even though the tread depth is good, I do see a little
bit of sidewall cracking and I am thinking of replacing them sooner
rather than later. I can't find a DOT date code on them either.

I only see one new tire choice that matches that size, it's a summer
tire (which would be fine; I have no intention of driving the Ghia in
the winter salt).

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Vredestein=Sprint+Classic=6HR5SC=false=yes

I think the "modern" equivalent size is 165/75-R15, which doesn't result
in any other choices, at least at tirerack.com.

http://vintagecarconnection.com/vintage_tire_size_conversion_chart.htm

Good point about checking the fit --- I'll pull one of the wheels off
and see if it fits in the spare well. Might be the reason that the spare
was missing!

I think they are NLA, or they were a few years. The '87 300D/TD used same,
and when I parted out Wilton's sedan, Karl wanted that. I think they have
something to do with regulating the vacuum for the transmission shift
points?

There are probably some rubber parts inside that need restoration, likely a
diaphragm and / or o-rings. Might be possible to open it up and replace
those?

I think the issue is the borg: they have the wrong location for your

Re: [MBZ] Allan karmann Ghia where/tire

2021-06-11 Thread Ronald Courcy via Mercedes
What size tires are you using on your Ghia? It would be a good idea to verify
that they fit in your spare tire "well". I seem to remember that the stock
size is 560/15 but 600/15 were a popular oversize. Nowadays 155 versus 165.
Anyways the larger size did not fit in the spare tire well of the VW bugs I am
not sure about the Ghia's.

Re: [MBZ] Maybe I should stick it to FedEx

2021-06-11 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I have had real issues with Fedex. Our house is on the edge of a zip code
and on a couple occasions they simply refused to drop off the package.
When I went to PU at their depot they would not let me do so under any
circumstances, despite having been told over the phone this is what I
needed to do. No such problem with USPS or UPS.

Re: [MBZ] Maybe I should stick it to FedEx

2021-06-11 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I "lost" a box of dog food a coupla weeks ago.  Got a message saying the
driver could not find the address.  Talked to Fedex (and this is
painful), we went back and forth, I finally called Chewy and they sent
out another box for free and gave me a $25 credit too.  ,Same thing with
Fedex then a day or two later.  I call Fedex again and was like WTF I
get deliveries all the time my mailbox is plainly marked.  So a Fedex
guy shows up a little while later and is asking me what happened, says
he will go try to find my package.  he comes back a coupla hours later
with my box, said the other driver had left it at a house down the road
a bit.  That made no sense, but whatever.  I get the impression this
other driver was either a complete idiot or was trying to steal the dog
food.  I ask this guy, who was really nice, where my other box was, did
this dumbass leave it at that house too or where was it, he must have
some record of it.  The guy kinda hems and haws a bit, was vague on the
matter, which reinforced that this guy probably stole it, and the guy I
was talking too just didn't want to get into it.

A few weeks back my buddy tells me he was helping his daughter move.
She had a coupla weeks between apartments so she left her stuff at a
storage bin and stayed with the parents until the new place was
available.  My buddy said they went to collect her stuff one morning
early, at two of the nearby bins there were these skanky looking people
and delivery vans loading and unloading packages into the bins.  He said
it looked like Fedex contractors and they were using these bins as sorta
intermediate storage/sorting/distribution points.  he thought that was
really weird.  With some many hands involved it is no wonder stuff goes
missing, and it looks like these outfits are farming out a lot of their
last mile deliveries to contractors.  I think Amazon is doing that too,
sometimes I get a plain white van that shows up with packages.

It's pretty crazy these days how the delivery business is working, the
explosion of online ordering the past year or so has really put the
strain on them it seems.  Contracting is a good way to expand without
adding employees and trucks and facilities and infrastructure, but then
you sorta lose control of the end points.

2021-06-11 Thread Robert Koziak via Mercedes
Dan,  I do have access to a friend's AC evacuator and the sensors are less than
$50.   If it wasn't too complicated I would attempt myself.  I have had no luck
with Youtube.  The AC refrigerant pressure switch looks like it might be easily
accessible under the car near the condenser.  The generic videos I saw on
replacing the Evaporator Sensor Switch range from removing a few screws to
removing the entire dash.Thanks!

If it’s the pressure switch you would need to evacuate the system, replace the
switch, pull a vacuum and charge. Do you have the tools necessary to do these
things? If not, leave it to your mechanic.

AC work isn’t rocket science, but you have to have the proper tools to do it.
It’s not something you can swag.

Re: [MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 Air Conditioner issue

2021-06-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Sounds like you need a wiring diagram and the service manual for the HVAC,
ideally with the component locations. Maybe try searching on you-tube
university?

If you can locate the connectors, you can probably spoof the signal to make
the system work. For instance, the pressure switch is probably a simple
open / closed switch, so either jump the wires or separate the wires to
simulate the proper signal. The temp switch is probably a thermistor, so
you would need to know the resistance to substitute a resistor, but if
there is a computer that is looking for a variable resistance, that
probably won't work.

However, getting it fixed properly will probably require the refrigerant to
be removed, so if you don't have that equipment, take it to someone who
does and get it done right.

[MBZ] 2011 Mercedes C300 Air Conditioner issue

2021-06-11 Thread Robert Koziak via Mercedes
Hi all,
    My daughter's 2011 Mercedes Benz C300 4matic (w/90K) air conditioner
stopped working a few days ago during a heatwave.  I checked the R134 charge
and the charge is fine.  I cannot see if the clutch is engaging because it's
internal.  I assumed that the compressor was bad so I decided to take it to my
local mechanic for an estimate.  He will diagnose it today but said he rarely
sees a bad compressor on that model but rather one of two sensors (AC
Refrigerant Pressure Switch or AC Evaporator Temperature Switch) is probably
bad.  If that's the case I might change myself if it's not too difficult.
Does anyone have instructions or know of a resource on how to replace the
two sensors?  I know one is under the condenser and the other is near the
evaporator in the dash.
  Thanks in advance!
Bob K
