Re: [MBZ] W108 power window motor removal
Thanks to Loren Faith and Jim Cathey for responding. Update on this topic, and for future reference: I was able to remove the entire lifter assembly, including the attached motor, by simply removing all the 10mm nuts securing the assembly to the door, and by removing the clip and sliding joint at the base of the glass. No need for power, took about five minutes total. Re: [MBZ] OT: VDO mechanical clock cleaning/lubrication
Unless you have experience with clockworks, I'd leave it alone. They are very well sealed and don't seem to collect dust and dirt, and if it's keeping time the lubricants are good. It's a simple clock, wound as described with a fairly soft spring, so low loading. If you do want to lubricate it, you really need to dis-assemble, clean all the pivots and jewels (and I think it's a jeweled movement, at least the fast running parts), then assemble and lubricate with VERY small amounts of synthetic clock oil applied with a clock oiler. That is, a small wire with the end flattened into a tiny spoon that delivers the correct amount of oil. You only need enough oil to fill the space between the pivot and the hole, and just barely the shoulder behind the pivot (the pin like bit that goes in the hole). Do NOT add oil to an old clock, even a sealed one without complete cleaning. Any dust or grit around the pivot will get carried into the hole by the new oil, and it will start grinding. New oil usually won't thin out gummy old oil either. I'd assume it was lubricated with high quality synthetic clock oil in the first place -- Elgin developed them in the 30s. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Yeah I set it to the correct time and I'll let it run overnight. If it's not too far off in the morning I'll probably just leave it alone. Pretty simple mechanism. Lever tied to the spring mechanism. As the spring winds down, lever makes contact with a stationary contact, completing a circuit that energizes a coil. Looking at the clock in my Ghia. It is a VDO "Kienzle" clock. I thought it was not working, but problem seemed mainly poor grounding. I removed it from the car and hooked it up to 12V. It's ticking like an old style windup clock, and the hands are moving at least somewhat. Not sure how accurately yet. The ticking seems to slow down and speed up a bit, cyclically. Every two minutes or so there sort of a clunk which I think is the spring being wound. I found an article about how to open it up and common problems. It suggested "spray the entire mechanism with WD-40" which I'm pretty sure is a bad idea. Probably a case of "leave well enough alone" if it keeps reasonably accurate time. The one I saw only concluded that a Mercedes diesel was less environmentally damaging than an EV. I didn't see that it was "least damaging". You have to look at the total energy cycle - all of it used to manufacture those wind generators, solar panels, nuclear plants (probably the best option, if thorium based), the batteries, all those silicon chipsand the rest of the car. In the best case you will break even, but the last study I saw a few years ago came to the conclusion that the least environmentally damaging mode of personal transportation was a new Mercedes Diesel. Re: [MBZ] 2001 SLK320 - 130k miles - $5,500
Probably a “Designo” interior. Interior plastics on these cars started degrading before they were off the lot. It’s a rare occasion to find one with interior plastics that aren’t trashed. Rather than molding them in the appropriate color, they were molded in black and then painted with the interior color. As the plastics gassed off, the topcoat broke down, causing the paint to come off and/or wear off when something came into contact with it. My upholstery guy said he replaced a bunch of R170 interiors over the years as a result of this. Best thing you can do is to use it as a bargaining point, then plan on spending a couple days disassembling everything and prepping and painting it with interior paint of the proper color. -D > On Sep 12, 2021, at 11:44 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > Coolant reservoir looks to be filled to the brim with tar, or is it black > plastic in these? > > https://bn.craigslist.org/cto/d/danvers-01-mercedes-slk320/7379465389.html > > Interior colors are cartoonish but overall might be in nice condition I > guess. Re: [MBZ] 123 prices
You might be right, it looks like pickup truck prices have recently taken a big dump. 2 months ago everything in the 3-4 year old range was $30,000+, there was nothing at all in the $15-$20k range and not much sub $15k.Now there are a lot more trucks, I see some 2017 stuff under $30k. I might be able to replace my current rust bucket before the bed falls off. -Curt On Sunday, September 12, 2021, 01:34:54 PM EDT, Rick Knoble via Mercedes wrote: All the government stimmy bux are gone We will be seeing a LOT of stuff at fire sale prices, very soon (six months or less).
