[MBZ] Frozen engine

2022-07-24 Thread B Dike via Mercedes
Greetings all, It’s roughly time for my annual MB diesel report and obligatory
inquiry.  There are rumors that my SIL will be the new owner of W123 240D.  The
family lives in WI which limits my diesel assistance to verbal support over the
phone.  But he enjoyed a prior career as a diesel mechanic so I’m content to be
a hands off consultant.  We still breath a big sigh of nostalgia whenever
someone mentions the 74 W113 240D that I sold far too soon.  The best
automobile ever to roam the earth IMHO.
Ok now here’s the question:  How does one free up a frozen engine block.  It’s
a V12 Jag not a Benz but I wager someone here has succeeded in doing it.  Not
sure if it’s overheated or merely rusted.  I once knew the procedures but am
drawing a complete blank.

2022-07-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Ah ok good to know about 040.  It sorta looks single stage but I can't
tell.  My wagon is peeling clear coat on the hood.

I have to buff up the S550 soon, 040 too, the new heated windshield
washer hose arrived yesterday on a slow boat from China so I can get
that in, then the rest of the stuff reinstalled and the car together,
then do the transmission fluid/filter and it should be good to go get
the AC flushed and recharged.  I'm excited to finally get it sorted, it
has been sitting for some months now waiting on various bits.  Will
still need some work but at least it will be running.

Will have to do some digging on some of the issues it is telling me it
has, might just be from the crash with the deer.

That’s 040. I’ll do something similar but probably not quite as aggressive on

driver door at Costco which of course set off the alarm which was loud as
hell. I should kill that thing.

BTW I ordered a 250 piece fuse kit off Amazon that showed up just before I
started this job (which was somewhat contorted because I had locked the
passenger door and the fuse panel is behind the passenger seat under the
rear seat and I had to climb in from the driver side, it is tight in the
back) so I could CHANGE THE FUSE. the kit has a bunch of the bigger blade
fuses and the smaller ones in various sizes. Should keep me going for
awhile. It was not expensive, good to have around in the tool kit.

I’m getting error messages for lights, some of which appear to be working.
 H. Some for bulbs in the tail lights which are not intuitively
removable. I’ll have to research that. Also says a low beam headlight but
it is working. I wonder if someone put in some funky bulbs. And the switch
must be a replacement as it does not pull out for fogs and rear bright
 taillight. Weird.

This car has headlight squirters that appear to be more like car wash
sprayers. I think the nozzles are buggered up as they sprayed the hood and
fenders. Not that I need them but interesting feature.

The single stage paints are the best, as they’re really hard to damage when

Re: [MBZ] ML550 Sunroof

2022-07-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Pretty sure that’s W211s only, and even if it was, that was for the roof itself
(laminated glass that has separation of the layers) and likely wouldn’t cover
the issue that mine has.

I’ll check just to be sure, though.

2022-07-24 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
The headlights are the kind that come on when the car is on. What’s that
callEd, DRO or DRL or something? I think they might either be some super
bright bulbs as they look kinda blue or LEDs that are causing a fault. But they
work. I’ll leave good enough alone.

I’ll have to look and see if I can shut that always-on “feature” off with the
fancy computer. It annoys me.

I’ll dig into the taillights at some point and figure out how to remove them.
The RF corner marker fixture in the bumper is broken and the bulb was burned
out, I thought I had some but didn’t find any. The fixture is cheap enough on
eBay or AliExpress.

Now that I have a MIG welder, and am reasonably competent with it, a
sunroof would get welded closed. We special ordered the Subauru to get one

Re: [MBZ] ML550 Sunroof

2022-07-24 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I don't understand the appeal of sunroofs. At least here, they are something I
might use a few times a year. They are otherwise just potential sources for
leaks and trouble. I would not miss having one in the slightest.

[MBZ] Bosley Interstate

When I was a wee lad, my favorite cars were the Apollo 3500GT,
Austin-Healey 3000, Marcos GT, and Cheetah.

That's only because I never heard of Bosley in the 1960s.

[MBZ] ML550 Sunroof

2022-07-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I have come to the conclusion that I’m not going to bear the near $1,000
(parts) expense for the repair of the sunroof in the ML550. While replacing the
headliner would be the ideal time to do it, I just don’t see the value for the
cost.

After I had finished tinkering with it a few weeks ago, I got it back in
position but noticed on a highway drive that there was some wind noise. Upon
close inspection, I found that the seal on the sunroof panel had rolled a bit
in the center rear where it meets the roof.

This morning I got an Allen wrench out and tilted the rear up, reset the seal,
and lubed it up with some of the unicorn tears lubricant that Mercedes has for
rubber seals. I lowered it back in place and it’s now sealing as intended.

I’m back in Florida for a bit right now, but when I head back to Flagstaff in
August I’m going to drop it off with my headliner guy to have him do his magic.
And I’ll leave the sunroof motor unplugged.

Re: [MBZ] Well that was easy — locks on CL500

2022-07-24 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
If it uses taillight socket arrangements similar to the W210 there’s a good
chance t’s just corrosion.

Youngest son’s 2002 E320 has a reverse light in the trunk lid that is
intermittent. I’ve tinkered with it numerous times and no matter what I do it
seems to have a life of it’s own. New lamp, cleaned the contacts, etc., etc.
Just a lousy design.

Headlight squirters in later models seem to be a failed effort to clean the
headlights. I’m not sure that they’re effective, at all.
