I have a set of Tekton long allen sockets I bought to work on my 240D with, I 
don't remember why, valve adjustments? Removing rocker towers? I used them a 
month ago to install a grub screw on a pulley, it reminded me why I like them, 
nice tools.

Possible they are lost. All HF seems to have is deep sockets which are fine

I just went into their online portal to update the characteristics of 
the rental house we just had the new roof put on.  All I did was update 
roof age from 18 years to 0 years.  You would think with a new roof, 
premium would go down.  Nope, raised it by over $300 a year.  WTF?  I 
guess I will leave that alone.

This roof was approaching 20 years old and actually was cheaper than I thought 
it would be at $12k. USAA estimate was $14k. My deductible was $2k but with 
depreciation they only covered $9600 of it. I had no idea it was only covered 
for ACV instead of replacement cost, but will damn sure be paying attention to 
it now.

of homeowner’s insurance, like it is here in Floriduh

It’s to the point in Floriduh where if your roof is more than 10 years old a 
lot of carriers won’t even quote you. Part of that is due to all the roof 
replacement scams that have been running here, too, but a lot of that is the 
insurance companies’ fault. They were paying out left and right for just about 
anything in the way of damage and not using ACV. The roof on my previous house 
got replaced under my homeowner’s policy to the tune of nearly $20k, and I only 
had to pay $900 out of pocket. I couldn’t believe it, as the roof was 20 years 
old and needed replacement anyway.

[MBZ] Fuel drain - 24mm hex substitute?

Good afternoon,

What do people use for r & r of the fuel filter/drain for W108, 115, 116
etc?

I measured it as a 24mm, but those seem very scarce on the ground. Anyone
used a 15/16ths hex instead? I'd just grab it with vice grips to install,
but it seems pretty fragile.

[MBZ] OT roof

After probably a year of screwing around with roofing companies, I ended up 
getting an invoice from one roofing company which I was able to send to USAA 
and they bypassed including the mortgage company on the check. The was that was 
going to work, mortgage company was only going to dribble out the money to the 
roofing company and was a ton of red tape. Since USAA only covered ACV and not 
replacement cost, a big portion was coming out of pocket so I really did not 
want to deal with all that BS.

Anyway, ended up getting a quote from a local guy who has been around for years 
who came in much cheaper than anywhere else. My dad has used him quite a bit. 
All of these other roofing companies wanted to sign contracts, deposits etc. 
This guy sent quote, told me to pick color which I did. Last Thursday they 
texted saying they were coming over the next day. Sure enough it’s done. They 
appear to have done a great job. I have yet to pay them a dime but they said we 
would meet up next week to get payment. Anyway, house looks much better now. 

Now it’s time to let USAA requote in now that it has a new roof, or shop 
around. I would think rates would be cheaper now that it has a brand new roof.

[MBZ] Off topic kia

Folks,

I never mentioned but I drove the 2007 Kia Sedona to Nahant, MA a couple of 
weeks ago and picked up a press for a customer, a couple of weeks ago …. I made 
stops with friends in Richmond and hillsdale, NY then daytripped to 
Massachusetts …. I dragged the machine on a light trailer … 1200 lb press …..I 
delivered it to him via rollback truck to McClellanville SC, above Charleston. 
Fuel was expensive above I guess Virginia … for 2400 miles kia and isuzu fuel 
and tolls was $1000 …. I’m still getting toll bills in the mail … I got one 
from the mass turnpike for about 45 for car and 5 for trailer … I don’t know if 
it was one or both ways … should I have had ez pass?

Anyway, the Kia has always had cold ac … now it’s fine at highway but at idle 
it runs maybe 30 second then shuts compressor shuts down for a minute or so …. 
You can see it on a freon pressure  gauge. Any ideas? Pressure switch or 
climate control unit?

Mercedes content my 82 300td is being resurrected …. I think I have an air leak 
in the fuel system

[MBZ] Poos ripped me off

Dug some more into the former poos car. Egr appears to be working to me and the 
code did not come back. However the other code ended up being for the turbo 
actuator and it did come back. I ran thru the tests which seem to indicate the 
actuator is bad? Is this common on the 648? Also I need to replace the intake 
pipe to the turbo. It’s brittle and cracked. I do need to remove the air 
cleaner to get better access to the actuator to see if it moves free or the 
linkage is stuck.

Appears it might be quite a fiasco to replace that cabin air temp sensor. All 
in all, with a minor amount of work it should make a great car. The car has 
dynamic seats, would not mind seeing what all it would take to get those going 
again.

I know a guy who bought one for his woodworking business and really 
liked it.  He got a better deal on it than a comparable Ford or whatever 
else.  Apparently they are a lot more popular in Europe, and I have seen 
some cool camper versions.  I did not know they were built at the plant 
here, I thought they only built Sprinters.

Most likely. However, we’ve seen equipment cancellations where an aircraft is 
out of service at a location they have to ferry parts in to repair it, and 
that’s usually decided in the overnight hours during maintenance windows. This 
flight wasn’t until 7:00 PM CDT today, so the decision was made well in advance.

morning before we left for the airport I got a text from American saying our 
DFW-FLG flight was cancelled. No other flights available so we just had to move 
to Monday on the same schedule. Better chance for upgrades, I hope.

so use OTC stuff to deal with the symptoms and don’t expect the Paxlovid to do 
it.

I think the reason that Sprinters sell well is that they are not only a useful 
size but also were sold under the Dodge nameplate during the Daimler-Chrylser 
years. Mercedes has made commercial trucks of all sizes for many decades but 
the Dodge Sprinter was the first one to really sell well in the USA.

I like the little Ford service vans, those are nice and look like they would be 
perfect for a service vehicle. The Nissan vans (NV) are quite popular around 
here with the plumbing and AC businesses, too.

SC Mercedes plant's Metris van is exiting US market after being out-Sprinted

The end of the road is in sight for the Metris. 

The Mercedes-Benz plant in North Charleston will stop assembling the van in 
late 2023 when the German manufacturer discontinues U.S. production of a 
mid-sized vehicle that's never caught on with buyers in North America.
But the site won't lose any workers because an electrified version of the 
factory's marquee nameplate — the Sprinter — is expected to fill the labor 
void, the company said.
"The decision to conclude order intake of the Metris for the U.S. market ... 
will have no impact on our team members," a Mercedes-Benz Vans spokeswoman 
said. "This is due to the incoming next generation of the eSprinter which, 
along with the diesel engine Sprinter, will be produced in our plant. We look 
forward to embarking on our electrified journey in the near future."

The company's plant in Palmetto Commerce Park is a major manufacturing employer 
for the region, with more than 1,600 workers, according to its website.

The eSprinter is expected to roll off the local production line next summer, 
giving buyers an electric option for the popular four-wheel commercial carrier 
that's used by Amazon and others. The next-generation version is already 
available in Europe.

Stuttgart-based Mercedes-Benz Vans said the Metris is a victim of slow sales, 
with production expected to wind down in the third quarter of 2023.

A spokeswoman said the company doesn't release sales figures for specific 
models. A report by Automotive News said 60,000 Metris vans have been sold to 
U.S. customers since it was introduced in 2015.

The South Carolina plant has cranked out more than 260,000 vehicles in roughly 
that same time period, indicating the Sprinter has outsold its smaller sibling 
by more than 3-to-1.

About half of the Metris sales have been to the U.S. Postal Service, which put 
in a multiyear order in 2020. Mercedes-Benz said it will fulfill that contract 
before production is shut down for good, according to a report by TheDrive.com.

Mercedes-Benz also tried to market the Metris as a recreational vehicle, 
partnering with upfitters to convert the vehicle into pop-up campers.

"The Metris' failure came down to its awkward, in-between size," according to 
TheDrive.com. "This is a country that prefers either big vans or small vans but 
not something that's neither, like the Metris."

Jalponik.com, an automotive website, agreed in an Aug. 11 report, saying the 
Metris "just couldn’t crawl out of the shadow of the popular ... Sprinter, nor 
that of its rivals from other carmakers like the Ram ProMaster and Ford Transit 
Connect. Mercedes-Benz dealers claim that the van’s size failed to make it a 
fit for commercial fleets. It was too small to be as useful as the bigger 
Sprinter, and too big to be considered practical like the smaller Ford Transit."

While the North Charleston plant builds Sprinters from the wheels up, it 
reassembles Metris vehicles that are shipped in containers to South Carolina as 
partially built "kits" from Europe.

The Sprinters being sold to North America buyers were once built using that 
model in North Charleston to avoid steep import taxes. In 2015, Mercedes-Benz 
announced it would spend $500 million to expand the plant into a full-blown 
production site. The Metris joined the assembly line that same year.

Another $60 million has been invested to get the factory between Ashley 
Phosphate and Ladson roads ready to produce the battery-powered version of the 
Sprinter for the U.S., its No. 2 market after Germany.
